Learn about accounting legerdemain .......2007-04-04
The great thing about this book: not only will you learn about accounting prestidigitation from the world's expert in this subject (Schilit's forensic accounting firm, the CFRA, is used by hedge funds worldwide to find problem companies), you can actually learn pretty much all there is to know about corporate accounting and financial statements. I found his explanations tremendously lucid; easily understood by an intelligent person who can add, subtract, multiply and divide. What is more; he made accounting not only accessible, but also somewhat exciting; not an adjective that generally describes accounting. He makes finding the cheating companies a jolly detective game of "spot the weasel!"
Who should read this? If you are a serious investor; someone who treats investments like something other than gambling, this is an absolute must. I'm not talking about speculators; you can speculate well without this stuff (though you can speculate better with it), but for investors you can't afford to be without it. This will teach you how to read a company statement, and a 10-k. Even those who have a more casual interest in investing or business will likely find this an amusing and rewarding read.

This book is such an excellent review of accounting practices. It is like reviewing everything that was important from two semesters of intermediate accounting in an easy-to-read 264 pages. And the style of the book delivers something that there wasn't enough of in school - application. Real-life stories of companies who use or have used questionable practices and how it has effected their business. The only weakness in this book is that it is now too old. It has a summary of Enron (Schilit must have understood what happened there before Ken Lay even did), but it still lists Arthur Andersen as one of the big five firms. No mention of Tyco's [...] or Sarbanes-Oxley. Please, Please, Please Revise This Book! It is great!
Bible of Accounting BS.......2007-02-07
Wether you are an investor hoping to not be deceived or a CFO hoping to BS yourself up a bonus this is the book to read. Great examples to reinforce a simple concept. That its easy to make profit go up or down by simply moving income and expenses around.
My only gripe is I would like to have access to the service the author works for but it doesn't seem to cater to retail investors. Too bad.

Yep, I am 23, and still do the fake sneeze, the fake belt loop snap, the sneaking is alright. Some of the facts in there still impress people. As a result of the book, I learned and often utilize little known facts about the postal service. Genius from cover to cover.
Bringing Back Memories.......2006-06-02
I'm 17 years old, but I remember having this book when I was little. This was my favorite book. It showed me how to sneak around and how to leave a glass of water upsidedown on a kitchen counter. These are still skills that I use in my everyday life. I highly reccomend it.

Now, I do not actually own this book. My friend Rebecca does though. No, Im not actually Mary Lee, but her "little girl" (well, if 11 is little) Now, I highly recommend this to all kids who really love to annoy/trick their parents, like me. It has a very good trick called the Egg Trick, youll have to buy the book to see what it is. It also had tips for sneaking around (as I've been sneaking around for a good 9 years, I knew all of these but their good for inexperienced sneakers). It has a TON of fun things to do in it, this is really worth the cash. If youre a parent looking for a good Christmas gift, this is perfect! Dont worry, like it says on the cover, you will NOT disapprove of anything in this.
Great kids book.......2000-06-19
I loved every part to this book. It is a great thing to read, it has how to sneak around, pig latin, questions that adults should know, tennis ball launchers, kid facts(one of my favorites) and so much other cool stuff. When I bought it the whoopie cushion didn't work at all, so don't get all excited about that part.
It is great for boredom in the summer, and might drive your parents crazy, in a not so bad way.

Don't be Fooled.......2007-01-05
In another attempt to continue making money off of the amazing Lucy Montgomery - her estate (or editors) have decided to split the books "The Story Girl" and "The Golden Road" in to 4 or 5 separate books - or they have watered down the actual content. No doubt charging full price for all of the books. The original stories are wonderful and beautifully written. Mrs. Montgomery herself, indicated that these books were closest to her heart. So, in order to read the stories in the correct chronological order and save yourself some money - just buy the two previously mentioned novels and enjoy!!

The New Ireland.......2001-02-09
This collection of 19 stories "from the wrong side of midnight" feature a young cadre of writers "from a generation with a different set of rules." As one might surmise from such jacket copy, the resulting are offbeat stories (many of which feature drugs, music, low level crime) which could be characterized as the Irish equivalent of the Scottish new wave (Welsh, Warner, et al), or as written riffs styled on the Coen Brothers/Tarantino combo of violence and dark humor. In fact, many of the stories are so similar in tone, style, and characterization that one could easily imagine they all came from the same laptop. One word of warning, the book leads off with two of the weakest stories, so don't be put off if you don't get into it right away.

When the best gets better!!!.......2003-08-13
As predicted, the 3rd edition is OFF THE HOOK!!! The 3rd edition, published in 2005, has close to 700 new entries. Nearly half of the photos are in color and the authors have included web site information for manufacturers. This latest edition is in the collection of prominent museums and academic institutions across the globe, especially universities which have significant design and architecture programs. This is certainly a must have edition for the intellectually astute connoisseur of furniture and design.
BTW, many of the listed reviews are referring to the 2nd edition which is now 10 years old!!! Check to be sure which edition other reviewers are referring to before making a purchase decision...you wouldn't want to miss out!!
Odd Criteria for "Modern".......2003-07-10
I was disappointed with the book and returned it. Nothing by Robsjohn Gibbings. Nothing by Harvey Probber. Only a single piece by Wormley. Only two by Finn Juhl. Instead, the selection seems weighted heavily toward austere Italian designs of metal and glass, esp. those produced in the 1960s and later. I did not expect the editors to show such a lack of interest in wood. And given the book's definitive-sounding title, I did not expect them to adopt such an rigid and uninteresting definition of "modern."

I grew up with this book, and still consider it the most important one in my collection. It contains photos, threading, tie-down and treadling for nearly every type of 4 harness weave, plus each chapter begins with valuable general information about the weaves in that chapter.
It is a great book when you want a no-nonsense reference.
If there is one book every weaver should own it is this one........1998-09-15
Truly, this is the book every weaver should have. Why? It contains, in a simple manner, many of the basic patterns used by every weaver. The instructions, tie-ups, draw downs - well, every aspect of this book makes the weaving of the time honored and time tested patterns a fairly easy process. So much of weaving refers to patterns that are within the cover of this book. Ms. Davison's work to preserve the ageless patterns is well worth the price. Buy it, read it, use it, and pass it on to someone you love in your will.

This book is destined to become one of the great classics for weavers! After 30 years of knowing 'how' to weave . . . I know understand more of the 'why' behind the drafts I have have been using. Wonderfully straight forward and well-organized. This book is a must-read for every weaver regardless of their experience.

Okay, but could be better.......2007-08-17
This is a well-intentioned work w/ a good foundation, but one that could've been better written. The author has teaching and mothering experiences, but is not necessarily an expert in this field, which the work reflects. She makes incorrect statements at times. Her assumptions about the readers and others throughout reflect stereotypes this type of work should avoid. Stark is repetitive at times and doesn't flush out a child's developmental capabilities, which would be most helpful. She delves into certain topics, e.g., body image, but completely ignores others at all ages. She is big on affection/touch and children having a sense of control over their lives, as well as how to counter outside messaging, which is a plus. She focuses a lot on the parents' relationship as setting an example. Stark is unfocused at times, however, going on tangents. She gives no resources.
A Great Tool for Teaching Healthy Sexual Values.......2005-07-26
This book is upbeat and loaded with user-friendly ideas on how to give our children a healthy perspective on sex that will help them one day to have what we all want for our children--happy and enduring intimate relationships. Parents have plenty of resources for teaching the biology of sex, but talking to kids about sex is much more complicated, especially with the influence of a media that promotes casual sex. The detrimental impact of current culture on our children's sexuality is more apparent with each passing year, making it critical for parents to be effective teachers of values. Ms. Stark's book has given me great encouragement. There is also very good material on how to bullet-proof our children from sexual abuse and generally how to be the kind of parents that kids listen to.
Help create an open, honest space for your kids........1999-10-17
This is a good book for parents who are anxious about their children's sexual development and who want them to have strong morals, but who aren't sure they know just how to go about doing it. Stark assumes parents can get the "plumbing lesson" elsewhere, and focuses on the most important parts of sex education: creating an open, honest atmosphere in which children may grow, surrounded by well-modeled examples of loving behavior. To this end, the book asks parents to take a hard look at their own lives: are you providing a good example for your children? If you aren't, how can you change that? In addition to short explanations about developmental stages (from infancy through teen years) and answering a few sample questions, Stark provides a framework on which families can build a healthy attitude about sex.
Patty helps parents help their kids choose well.......1998-06-30
Patty Stark has 2 teenagers (who I know personally) and has used her experience as an approachable mom to help other parents keep the lines of communication open. All too often today, when sex= genital pleasure, our young people loose out on the spiritual aspects of sex that make it truely unitative and life-enhancing. Patty tells parents to give their children more than just "the talk." (and to speak of these issues more than just once!) What makes this book so different is its focus on what is healthy and normal (like what a fun date looks like instead of fixating on date rape, encouraging good dating habits instead of listing all the contraceptive options, stages in a healthy relationship as opposed to self-gratification). I give this book less than five stars because Patty, since the book was published, has changed her views on mastrubation.

Nanci Griffith is something of a buried treasure. Those who have discovered her music wonder how they ever got along without it, and through this book Nanci tells the stories of the music she discovered through the years, discoveries that made her what she is today. The book's primary focus is a song-by-song discussion of her album "Other Voices 2", but the earlier (and better) "Other Voices, Other Rooms" gets a similar treatment. Given the absence of popular material that discusses folk music's history generally, this book, like Nanci herself, is a great find. But you probably already know that....
"Nancy with Friends" - relaxing and repeatable, thumbup!.......1999-02-15
I first discovered Nancy while living in remote Beaumont, TX, USA. the air was polluted, the three points of life considted of work, church, family. Being single, working for Mobil (uncaring company) I had only one pillar of life - Church.
To fill in the other points: I choose Nancy & her music. Life has been grand ever since.
This album continues the long line of excellent song writing and great voice.
I encourage everyone to listen to the words and float on the music.

Folk Music Lives!.......1998-10-07
For those of us who hung out in coffeehouses in the 60's and 70's, this books brings us back together. It is wonderful to know that some of my folk heroes live on through Nanci Griffith's ambitious project. She has gathered some of the finest musicians/songwriters and this book speaks for them and from them. It is a great companion to the two CD's and a wealth of insights on why Nanci chose the particular songs. For me, it was also a good way to become better acquainted with this woman of artistry and vision. Enjoy, folk lovers!

Born in Georgia of a Jewish family, Helen Jacobus married Day Apte in 1909 and began keeping a diary that would last until her death in 1946. With unusual intelligence and candor, she explored their life together through two world wars and the Great Depression, including her most intimate thoughts about children, sex, religion, the South--even her occasional attractions to other men. Raised to embrace Victorian values just as they were passing away in the outside world, Apte sometimes chafed against the restrictions imposed upon her by her times. Part of the great pleasure of reading these diary entries is seeing how her keen mind made the most of the limited sphere it was allotted. A former journalist for National Public Radio, Rosenbaum has done a skillful job editing this volume, adding essays that put Apte's life into social and historical context. The result is a fitting tribute to an ordinary woman of extraordinary strength and insight.

I enjoy reading diaries, especially from the past, and gaining more insight into people's thoughts and feelings. While I didn't dislike Helen Jacobus Apte as much as some other reviewers did, I did think that her diary was a trifle boring. I found myself skimming through parts of it, although it did give a fairly good picture of Southern life in that time period. Overall, I'd say this book was a mild disappointment.

Heart of a Wife: The diary of a Southern Jewish Woman opened up a window to a world that was completely foreign to me despite a common European Jewish heritage. Helen Jacobus Apte was born in 1886 Georgia and was first generation American but did not have any of the immigrant characteristics and values that I would have expected. She derived her set of values and standards from the dominant Victorian culture rather than from Jewish Tradition, yet she did have an important place in her heart for Judaism.
She spoke of her intention as a new bride to light shabbat candles every week and we know that she was active in her temple and in Jewish Charities, but it is unclear if she did observe Jewish Rituals throughout her life. There is no mention of a seder and Rosh Hashana was referred to as "The New Year" with little elaboration. Marcus D Rosenberg, her grandson,acknowleges that " Readers may find it curious that so little in it is identifiably "Jewish". In some ways of course, everything in it is Jewish. Judaism was behind Helen's clearly liberal social conscience. Her Religion not only guided her views of life and death but also shaped her views of duty and responsibility."
Helen's parents immigrated to the United States from Germany and I am amazed that her connections to her European past could have been so cleanly severed. I could not imagine a woman of her intelligence and supposed social consciousness would not be more aware of the the plight of European Jewry during the thirties and forties and not feel some connection to it. (If she did, she never mentioned it.) Rosenberg explains in his essay that Helen identified as a Southern American who happened to be Jewish" and that was common in that time and Place.
Marcus Rosenberg does a wonderful job of setting the historical context and establishing identities of family members. His essays offer great insight into the times and the events which influence her. I do think he has a more romantic image of his grandmother than she deserves. I was very disappointed by Helen Jacobus Apte. I thought that she had great talent and potential but was too self absorbed to have any positive effect on those around her, and certainly not on the world.
Was Helen Apte truly a typical Southern Jewish Woman? I hope that she was not. She was the stereo-typical Southern Belle, spoiled , self-centered, with a constant case of the "vapors". Although she alludes to world events, none of them seemed to touch her. Only "The 1910 Cigar Strike," which affected her directly and financially, seemed to really matter. She was the center of her world, and she seemed to use her ill health to her best advantage.

Helen Jacobus Apte was a remarkable woman. Readers gain an intimate view of a pre-feminist world by reading her very private diary. A Southern Jewess who valued her Southern and Jewish origins equally, Apte lived a comfortable life and served as an articulate witness to vital events in early 20th Century American life. Apte's writing is beautiful and she makes even the most mundane subjects poignant with the quality of her insights and prose. A clear talent,she apparently failed to recognize her ability or chose - for one reason or another - to share it only with her diary. Fortunately for us, her grandson, who discovered the diary long after Apte's death, brought it to publication complete with a series of highly-informative supportive essays which help readers appreciate the times in which his grandmother lived. Apte was a true romantic and may have been one of the last Victorians. In many ways her values are so remote from ours today, that it's a stretch to appreciate her; which makes reading Heart of a Wife a satisfying exploration into real-life history.

This book was boring. It basically told of a rich woman who was bored all the time, so therefore kept up extrmarital dalliances to amuse herself. How stupid! What a waste. What really infuriated me was the constant complaint of how she could have been a writer, yet lacked the education! What a cop out! With all the money she had, she really had NO excuse. She had no excuse, with or without money! She certainly read enough, a book a day! Wouldn't we all love to be able to say we have that kind of time on our hands! there were plenty of women writers during her lifetime to emulate. If her role in society was to raise a child and her own daughter was so independent and she wasn't able to have more.........GEEZ, there's plenty of kids, without parents, who could have benefited from her lack of children! I believe the Jewish faith practices benevelonce, leaving the world a better place than you found it, SHEEEEES, somebody should have slapped her silly, and told her to WAKE UP, quit thinking about YOURSELF.....poor YOOOOOOU! I was sorely disappointed to say the least!
