Home Town Review.......2006-02-07
I may be predjudiced as the author is from my home town. I identify with him as but for the grace of god, I may have been in the same war he found himself in as a teen. I enjoyed reading of his home town which I remember well. Today it can no longer be called a small town due to progress but for us oldsters we recall it well.Mr Holbrook purveys the war from a young man's view without using a lot of graphic language, profanity as the authors of today are prone to do. We as readers can well put in that part as we know how a bunch of young men talk when they get together...I rate this book 5 stars and would like to see more like it.....Larry of Brainerd,MN

Incredible book - a worthwhile read!.......2003-06-23
This book helped me see that no person or situation is hopeless. McNamara is candid and insightful. He exposes his own personal struggles in effort to assist the reader with their own. Once I started reading, I could not put it down.
Your the inspiration Robert P. McNamara!!!.......2003-04-22
This book is an inspiration for all! Robert P. McNamara, an Associate Professor, at Furman University, illustrates a candid account of the child foster care system by detailing his challenges and deprivations by giving his painful portrayal and first hand experience. This story should be made into a T. V. movie!!!! I cried all the way through this book. He truly shows some people can overcome any obstacles. I loved it and recommended it to friends and family.

Come Back to Weightlifting.......2007-04-10
If you're wanting to get back into weightlifting, this book will give you the inspiration and tips you need. This book is the perfect supplement to your class or personal trainer
Additional Reading Required.......2007-02-15
The title of this book makes it sound like a beginner's college course in the subject of body building. In my experience, a course like this should have one of two thrusts.
1. An Overview: The book should cover all aspects of the subject, but in a very broad, somewhat superficial way. Bodybuilding 101 covers training and diet, and it covers intermediate and advanced techniques. But, if it's supposed to be an overview, I'm surprised there isn't a section about posing, and competitive body building.
Or:
2. A Beginner's How-To: The book should present detailed information for a beginner to have a clear picture of what to do if he/she wants to start down the road of a bodybuilder. If that's the case, there just isn't enough information to start a weight training program. The book serves as a good supplement for someone working with a trainer or a workout partner with more experience.
If you're a total beginner, and want to learn to workout on your own, the book offers inspiration and some useful information, but you're going to have to buy some other books or do some research to really get an understanding of proper form with the exercises he promotes. I've lifted before, and bought this book because I was coming back to weight lifting. For where I'm at, it's a pretty enjoyable book. He has good suggestions on what exercises to focus on, and he doesn't get bogged down in scientific theory. I also like his views of challenging yourself, and constant experimentation, and stressing we're each unique with different needs and different paths to success. I can't complain about the way information is organized. It's very perusable. However, if you're the type of person who wants to be told step 1 on page 1, then step 2 on page 2, etc., you'll be pretty frustrated.
My biggest complaints are with the detail. He doesn't give enough info about form for the individual exercises. More photos would be very useful. For some exercises, he has a couple photos showing beginning and ending positions. Other exercises will only have one photo, and a few exercises don't have any photos associated with them at all. There are a few useless photos in sections about rest and eating habits that I'm sure were just stuffed in there for no other reason than to break up the copy.
Overall, I'm happy with the book, but if you're an absolute beginner, and think you'll be able to start a lifting program with nothing other than this book, you'll be dissatisfied.
Bodybuilding 101: C+
Would have earned five stars with some change in attitude........2006-10-23
The author has compromised his hard work and insightful views by relishing his machismo. It portrays Bodybuilding as a mindless activity obsessed with sex, muscle mass, and physical appearance at the expense of graceful fitness, as follows.
1-The book cover is repulsive to a great segment of readers (in my opinion). It further conveys a sense of physical emptiness. That obsession of showing sexually attractive, yet mentally shallow, is prevalent in the book photos.
2- The first page of the book shows a person laying his shoe on the barbell. That is both demeaning to the sport and unhygienic. The part of the barbell that touches the lifter skin should not come in contact with the sole of the shoes.
3- The very second page shows a hunk squatting in 135 lb barbell and wearing a belt. Waist belts are the worst advertisement for bodybuilding. The rest of the book will amplify thas philosophy of stiff and inflexible lifters.
4- The most annoying part of the book is the photos of young people drinking, eating, laying on grass, and thinking. I am not kidding! That made me resists spending the $17.95, though I liked many things about the book. I might change my mind though and give it a ride home. The book does have many good ideas.
5- Many photographed people in the book look weird, either drugged or otherwise. Many faces look pathetic, not because of lack of physical attraction but rather of angry facial expressions. It conveys a sense of an endemic psychological disturbance among bodybuilders.
6- The unfortunate trend in the book is the total lack of stretching, flexibility, or sound skeletal fitness. The whole book is about getting big, strong, and cut. Many bodybuilders achieved those goals yet subjected themselves to spinal injuries, life-long joint disease, and unhealthy overweight. There is no single lift in the book that started from the floor and made full travel overhead, which is ironic, unscientific, and unfortunate.
The positive contribution in the book is plenty as well.
1- The author is clearly well organized with high abstract skills. His chapters are beautifully written, concise, rational, and focused. The author is genuine and knowledgeable. He does not sell the moon or the stars, but rather conveys what he has learned and what worked for him. That is where the worth of author's experience counts. I suspect that the author bought into someone's ill advice for the design of his book cover for commercial purpose.
2- The book offers very effective methods of excelling in bodybuilding by its emphasis on intensity. It is realistic in stressing that 90 days would not do the magic that others claim. It is realistic on exercise planning, except its obsession with peripheral muscles. I wish the author revisits Newton's laws of mechanics in order to figure out why huge arms and shoulders, with insecure low back, is not the best way to educate people about building muscles.
3- The invaluable wealth in the book is its emphasis on constant changing of routine, plenty of sleep and rest (that is the best approach), and its simple and clear understanding of the fundamental exercises such Squat and Deadlift. I dreaded the front squat with crossed arms. It is not right to wait until you lose shoulder flexibility and become unable to flex your elbows and shoulders in such improper front squat.
4- Many exercise photos in the book are inspiring to beginners. It demonstrates that physical improvement is feasible with behavior modification.
5- The peak triumph in the book is the discussion of exercising all body parts with different exercises of different ratios of sets and repetitions. Here, where you learn some lasting knowledge from an experienced author.
One might argue that engaging in bodybuilding is more productive than succumbing to sedentary living, drugs, smoking, or alcohol. Yet, the many years bodybuilders devote bulking up should not be wasted in compromising future health with inflexible joints, damaged internal organs, and irreversible side effects of overweight. High mobility and full range of motion of joints should improve the quality of life of bodybuilders. The top bodybuilders I followed in my over 40 years of training either struggled with kidney problems, lower back and knee problems, high blood pressure, or loss of great opportunities of professional and educational gain because of the extreme indulgence of building massive muscles that are hard to keep atop. The sadistic drive for big and strong should be substituted by graceful and strong. And habitual smiling comforts the soul as well.

Disappointed - it says do it, but doesn't say how to do it........2006-09-13
I bought this book recently and I'm disappointed at it. It only has one page with the exercise plan just listing the exercises you should do in the beginning phase. But, IT DOES NOT EXPLAIN HOW TO PERFORM THEM. It only shows pictures of just some of the exercises he lists. All in all, buy this book for advice and stories about the weight training life rather than how to do it.
5 stars? You gotta be kidding me.........2005-03-13
How is it that Wolff's books get such great reviews? I'm not going to rehash the negative points. Search the reviews for the scant few that gave less than 4 or 5 stars. I think there is some kind of "circle of friends" going around giving 5-star reviews and then going back saying that they found each other's reviews to be helpful. The books certainly are not helpful. Reviewer SBJ400, while having some good reviews on other products, has basically cut and pasted reviews from one Wolff book to another and given them all 5 stars. If you want to get started-out in weight training I'd suggest anything from the "Men's Health" line of products or anything that Lou Schuler has been associated with (even though he is no longer with Men's Health). As far as I'm concerned, "The Book of Muscle" has been pretty much the seminal treatise on weight training for the past couple of years. I've read probably 50 other books on the subject, and none of them has any information that one doesn't have in it.

Incredible Cookbook.......2007-10-04
We tried several recipes and all of them were absolutely wonderful. This is by far the best dessert cookbook I have ever owned. I'm looking forward to trying one of her other cookbooks.
One of the best baking books.......2007-01-22
This is an amazing, luscious Italian baking book. It highlights traditional expected recipes and ones that are rarely known, most often used only in Italian home cooking. The results you get are ecstasy and there is not the overuse of sugar that is so often found in baking and sweets. The pictures are wonderful, I only wish each recipe had one. Basically, that is the only flaw with this book. The orange tart is one I had never heard of, but was amazing. The cheesecakes & various other fruit and citrus tarts are wonderful. The author provides clear, concise instructions and details about Italian baking and life that's fun to read about. This book is also a pleasure just to look through.

Checking for stars!.......2007-06-20
Hi,
I am the author of this book. The first review in the list of five gives a glowing report and yet rates only one star! I feel that this is a mistake. All the other reviews give the book five stars. This might be detrimentally affecting sales. I feel sure that the reviewer did not intend the single star rating with the review that he or she has given.
Perhaps you can check this out. Thanks
Must have for your library.......2006-11-10
Not only is this book filled with beautiful color photographs and illustrations, it's packed with practical information for both beginner and advanced potters. Even non-potters who have an interest in pottery will find it an excellant source for understanding the the technical and aesthetic basics of surface decoration. As a potter and a pottery teacher, I find myself going back to the book frequently for information and ideas.
A great reference for both beginners and advanced potters.......2006-02-18
Making Marks is an excellent reference book that both beginners and advanced potters can benefit from. It delves into all aspects of potting, and not only illustrates the results that can be achieved, it provides the "how to" for many of the processes. Any potter who has this book in their library will never run out of ideas for creating unique pieces.
Books like this one - a definite necessity !.......2005-08-11
This is an exciting book, it is not just about painting marks on surfaces. The list of options is quite comprehensive from liquid slips, clay colour modifications, carving, underglazes, slip-trailing, lustre-ware and of course impressions and incisions made by tools. Robin Hopper is a master of clay due to the years he has be absorbed by it. He has used good quality work by various potters to display the different forms of decoration.
Surface decoration is always something you need to think in advance about before making the piece. You need to be clear what you want to see in the end, these choices will affect how smooth you want the surface to be and of course the decoration needs to be a custom-fit aesthetically for each piece. Discourse about these matters is found throughout the book.
Glaze technology is discussed in this book, though not to the depth a total beginner would like - total knowledge could be gained in a technical course.
This is one of those books that you can keep using as your understanding grows depending on where you are. Always interesting and inspiring to read about other surace decoration forms gaining knowledge all the way.
This book would also be good as a guide in a set course, chapter by chapter you could do projects eg Chapt 1: Drawing, Chapt 2: Sign & Symbol, Chapt 3: Pattern & Space, Chapt 6: Marks of Slash, Scratch, Carve & Cut etc.
All in all, a wonderful storehouse of so many ideas to have at hand !
For the dabbler or those needing inspiration to try something new.......2005-07-09
While I'm relatively new to the art and craft of pottery, I beginning to find my own voice in my work. This book is helping me to think about differnet ways to express myself in my work. While I will probably never go out and buy a sand blaster or work with lusters, I know I have the inital reference source I need should I decide to go that way.
Possibly one of the most valuable (but not necessarily exciting sections) is his intial discussion of drawing and line. I come from a background of hard science (chemistry) and know little of formal art or the principles of "line." He explains why this is important and how to start thinking about it.
Finally, the book is a visual orgy. My husband (non potter) and I frequently sit and flip through the book to look at the examples of the various works. It becomes intoxicating. We can sit and discuss what makes one peice have that "come hither" look while another, while technically excellent, has little or no appeal to us. It has become a spring board for me in terms of astectics.
While this book will not teach you how to sand blast or give you important clues about the proper layering of airbrushed glazes, it will help you think about all of the different types of marks you can make on clay and choose the ones that call to you.

Book Description
Concern about the environmental consequences of the widespread use of pesticides has increased, and evidence of pesticide-resistant virus vectors have continued to emerge. This volume presents a timely survey of the mechanisms of plant resistance and examines current developments in breeding for resistance, with particular emphasis on advances in genetic engineering which allow for the incorporation of viral genetic material into plants. Discusses the mechanisms of innate resistance in strains of tobacco, tomato, and cowpea; various aspects of induced resistance, including the characterization and roles of the pathogenesis-related proteins; antiviral substances and their comparison with interferon; and cross-protection between plant virus strains. Also presents several papers which evaluate the status of genetic engineering as it relates to breeding resistant plants. Among these are discussions of the potential use of plant viruses as gene vectors, gene coding for viral coat protein, satellite RNA, and antisense RNA, and practical issues such as the durability of resistant crop plants in the field.

Excerpts on Life....A review.......2004-03-20
This collection of poetry is a true inspiration. It touches so many aspects of every day life and you can actually feel God speaking through her words. The way she writes allows you to create a vivid picture in your mind and actually feel a little of what she felt in each circumstance. There are poems to lift your spirits, poems to help you cope and poems to encourage. This is an excellent book and I would recommend it to all who may be looking for an answer in their situation, a bit of encouragement, or to draw closer to God.

Robbie.......2000-03-20
I was expecting a lengthy autobiography when I ordered this and instead it is a book of pictures with quotes from Robbie taken from various interviews over the years. It is very funny and interesting and you get a lot of insight into Robbie. It doesn't give you any background though so if you don't know about Take That, or Robbie's love life, or his drug problems, the quotes don't mean very much. There are many quotes about random women he dated I had never heard of and about Take That members I knew nothing about. In general, it's a fun piece of fluff, but it's not very meaty, and it's a little pricey for a re-cycled interview book.

Book Description
Like Schindler's List, this is a haunting document for the next generation of Holocaust survivors. Zable travels from Australia to the Eastern European countryside of his parents' remembrance to understand the present-the inner lives of those who, like his parents, survived the hatred but lost every trace of family. Winner of top Australian literary awards.
Book Description
This study addresses the relationship between the veneration of Buddha relics and the appropriation of power in early medieval Japan. Focusing on the ninth to the fourteenth centuries, it analyzes the ways in which relics functioned as material media for the interactions of Buddhist clerics, the imperial family, lay aristocrats, and warrior society and explores the multivocality of relics by dealing with specific historical examples. Brian Ruppert argues that relics offered means for reinforcing or subverting hierarchical relations. The author's critical literary and anthropological analyses attest to the prominence of relic veneration in government, in lay practice associated with the maintenance of the imperial line and warrior houses, and in the promotion of specific Buddhist sects in Japan.
Customer Reviews:
A great work.......2003-11-19
I am not a historian, hence my review may be rather subjective. While this book would in general only be of interest to people involved in research of Japanese history, I read it for a class assignement and found it very enjoyable.
Understanding of this book requires some basic knowlege of Japanese history. Given that, the book is very easy to read. Ruppert does a great job covering a multitude of aspects of Japanese society in which relic veneration had a role, while not "dragging out" discussion of any particular topic.I would definitelly recommend this book to anyone who in has an interest in the role of buddhism in medieval Japan.
