      5 out of 5 stars Marines.......2004-07-11

This book recounts history from a first-hand look. Rather than dwelling on dates and battle planning, this book tells the actual stories of what it feels like to be on the front-lines of battle. It captures true feelings, things you normally don't talk about when you recount your own stories of war. I think the author did a great job of showing emotions while telling the stories of the five men. This is a must read for anyone interested in WWII history.

      5 out of 5 stars Heroes Everyone.......2004-03-30

This book is great it tells true storys of these Marines battles and what they went through. This is history and people need to read this book because i couldn't put it down cause you feel like you are there as the men were and its hard to think how these Marines every made it through these battles to come home. This would be a great book for the young people who want to know about the battles in the South Pacific. The book has the right title, these men are heroes and without men and women of today and the past we all could not live our lives as we due today free and able to do as we want and feel free. I belive anyone who reads this book we agree with what i have said about this book.

For three decades, primatologist Roger Fouts has been involved in language studies of the chimpanzee, the animal most closely related to human beings. Among his subjects was the renowned Washoe, who was "endowed with a powerful need to learn and communicate," and who developed an extraordinary vocabulary in American sign language. Another chimpanzee, Fouts writes, "never made a grammatical error," which turned a whole school of linguistic theory upside down. While reporting these successes, Fouts also notes that chimpanzees are regularly abused in laboratory settings and that in the wild their number has fallen from 5,000,000 to fewer than 175,000 in the last century.

            Book Description

For 30 years Roger Fouts has pioneered communication with chimpanzees through sign language--beginning with a mischievous baby chimp named Washoe. This remarkable book describes Fout's odyssey from novice researcher to celebrity scientist to impassioned crusader for the rights of animals. Living and conversing with these sensitive creatures has given him a profound appreciation of what they can teach us about ourselves. It has also made Fouts an outspoken opponent of biomedical experimentation on chimpanzees. A voyage of scientific discovery and interspecies communication, this is a stirring tale of friendship, courage, and compassion that will change forever the way we view our biological--and spritual--next of kin.

            5 out of 5 stars Truly enlightening.......2007-06-21

At age 62, I still look for writers who will change and deepen my sense of our human nature and our place in the natural world. More than writers about religion per se, I think these writers are able to help us advance our moral and spiritual understanding and reconcile our human/animal natures. For some years I've been reading Goodall and others on primates, but Next of Kin was, for me, a pinnacle illumination. Even if you aren't interested in these types of questions, I think this book will move you deeply. If you ARE interested, may I also suggest the recent Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating chimp behavior.......2007-02-25

Although this book was written some time ago, it is exceptionally timely because the information is fascinating in relation to the chimpanzee training and interacting that it describes. It is a page turner because the lives of the author and his chimps are entertaining and engrossing. Also, the lack of compassion for chimps in laboratory studies is still a huge problem worldwide; poaching is still prevalent, and this behavior is reinforced by the backward and ignorant thinking that stems from bible thumpers who fear the truth about evolution and our relationship to the great apes. Roger Fouts and his wife have provided an invaluable service to our understanding of chimps and their close relationship to man.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book.......2006-09-01

This book is a very thorough treatment not only of the plight of the chimpanzees who have learned American Sign Language, but of other captive chimpanzees and free-living chimpanzees as well. It explores science, philosophy, and philanthropy as they relate to our relationship with our next of kin. I appreciate how honestly it is written and it has since become my favorite book (ten years and counting...).

5 out of 5 stars where to even begin..........2006-05-15

This was a book assigned for a class I took on comparative (animal) psychology. In addition to having a few humorous anecdotes of monkey business, it introduces concepts of zoology, linguistics, and psychology more generally. It also raises questions about what it really means to be human or animal. It's not dense reading, but the issues that it raises are not light either. It's worth the struggle. The mark of a good book: even a few years after reading it, I still recommend it to folks. Including you.

5 out of 5 stars an eye opener.......2005-12-03

I enjoyed this book very much. It is an eye opener to the way research animals are viewed and sometimes treated in our society today but it is written in story form so it does not come off as boring or preachy. Since I work with research animals I found the book to be very educational. It gives you insight into the varying degrees with which people interpret "proper care and well being" of these animals. But the most interesting part about this book is that you get to see just how chimps learn and how more interestingly, how they feel about people and things happening in their lives since they are able to communicate with humans via sign language.
At times it was very sad to read about the fate of some of these chimps but it is written in a way that takes you along for the ride on this man's journey to his destiny working with and speaking for (and with) chimpanzees.

I did find the last chapter (I think it was called back to Africa) to be a little draggy and unfocused. This chapter seemed to jump around in a non-smooth fashion but the rest of the book is excellent.

If you are an animal lover or are just interested in the bahavior of our closest living relatives, the chimps, then I highly recommend this book.

Daniel Schacter, a Harvard professor of psychology and researcher into the workings of memory and the brain, authoritatively summarizes the most up-to-date scientific knowledge in this controversial field. Many of the advances have come from the study of brain-damaged patients: some remember past events clearly, yet forget the basics of everyday knowledge; others have precisely the reverse affliction. Putting this work together with brain scans and experiments on normal people, a useful understanding has emerged of the connections between the brain and the mind, and of the different types of memory. Schacter also bravely refutes the notion of "recovered memory," arguing persuasively that false memories can be easily created.

              Book Description

Over the past two decades scientists have made remarkable breakthroughs in understanding how memories are stored and retrieved, and with this knowledge they are beginning to understand the mysteries of the human mind. How can we perform tasks such as playing the piano or typing in such a way that we do not need to consciously direct each movement every step of the way? Why can we forget where we put our keys and yet remember events that happened long ago? Why is memory imperfect, and sometimes dead wrong?

Daniel Schacter has been at the forefront of the research, and Searching for Memory is his firsthand account of what we now know and what it means. With references to art and autobiography and fascinating case studies, a la Oliver Sacks, he explains how one's past experiences influence the formation of new memories, how and why memory changes as people age, and much more. The book also sheds light on such hot topics as false memory syndrome, recovered memory, Alzheimer's disease and brain-damaged patients.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and revealing.......2007-07-12

Make no mistake, this is an excellent read regarding memory. In many ways, however, it acts to spotlight more what we DON'T know about memory than what we do. It focuses on location of activity in the brain insofar as discussing how memories are made, rather than the nuts and bolts of HOW they are crafted. In other words, it's as if you were an observer on a hill far above a town and you, not knowing any history of transactions or how stores work, watched many people enter a building, and coming out with items. If you didn't know how monetary exchanges worked, you could still hypothecize that "something" occurred in that building that enabled people to go in empty-handed but come out loaded with goods. But you might have no idea about how money worked or how barter might work. You simply wouold have no way of really knowing what took place in those mysterious locations. So it is with Schacter's book: repeatedly he talks about the hippocampus or other location in the brain as being a spot of brain activity when memories are recalled, but that says nothing about how they are recorded. Thus, the book does not address the specifics of how immaterial subjects such as ideas could be remembered in the physical world of the brain. I for one liked the constant usage of paintings to make his points about the "fragile power" of memory--it is through painters and novelists (creators) that we can learn a great deal of the depth of power, angst, and despair that memories (or the lack thereof) can cause. Seems perfectly appropriate to me. A good read and focuses more on breadth than depth, which again, perfectly appropriate for a lay audience.

              5 out of 5 stars A remarkable synthesis.......2007-06-18

Daniel Schacter brilliantly interweaves scientific findings, artistic representations, philosophical reflections and his own personal history into a non-stop tour de force exposition of the study of memory. Proust, Ebbinghaus, Larry Squire and Isabel Allende all find their places in this remarkable volume. An effortless, informative, and stimulating read for anyone interested in the human mind.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting collection of cases to make a point........2004-07-03

I found this book a very interesting reading, and surely learned some new facts. This book stimulated my eager to reflect upon what a delicate and intricated concept memory is. I particularly dislike all the "art" references the author makes in every chapter of the book. I really think this was an unnecessary complement that in my opinion not always makes a good pedagogic analogy. The book format was a little bit square, but I suppose that helps to order ideas in one's brain. Anyway, the book is really interesting and the cases are very well selected, though I personally don't like to rely that much on induction, but also I know that sometimes this is inevitable.

4 out of 5 stars Cognitive psychology of memory.......2002-03-14

this is the best review of the cognitive psychology of memory, by one of the leading experts in the field. I personally did not enjoy the artistic aspest of the book, but many say it was complementing. Now there are much better cognitive neuroscience books on memory -Kandel and Squires books, Steven Roses, among others- but as for the psychological aspects, this book stands above all others. At times it reads too much like a collection of case studies, but few would deny that lesion studies have contribuited a lot to an understanding of the brain/mind.
Most of the memory field is covered: recogntion vs. recall, implicit vs. explicit, episodic vs. procedural, short -long term, working memory, genral, emotional, semantic, etc..... but there is also a welcome and thorough discussion of false and recovered memories. In no other field can one see better the imediateimpact that cognitive psychology of memory has on legal and social issues. Schacter effectively explains everything we know about the phenomenon. As for the other themes, adequate and sufficient reviews are given. I personally would have liked a bit more of neuroscience, but it is a great read nontheless. There is also not much mention of the relationship between memory and other higher cognitive processes, like consciousness (a good place for speculation) or attention. But Schacter sticks to what is known, and does it well.
AS an introduction to any aspect of memory studies, few texts are better than this one. But I would tell anyone interested to also read other Schacter books, as well as more pure psychology and neurological texts on the subject. (see Seven Sins of Memory by the same author, Kandel and Squires Memory:from Minds to Molecules and Roses The Making of Memory among others).

              5 out of 5 stars great read.......2001-09-15

Schacter has written a superb overview of the working so the brain and memory. I read this book in one night! I can highly recommend it!
Other recent great reads: "Decoding Darkness" (Tanzi and Parsons) on how Alzheimer's affects the brain -- fascinating stuff!

While this book may come from a barbecue society it mostly deals with grilling instead of smoking. In addition, quite a few of the recipes lacked critical details. The "Champion's" recipes were laughable. I was hoping for more than : Blue Ribbon Brisket: Ingredient list: 7-10 pound brisket trimmed, barbecue rub. Instructions: Season meat with rub, cook at 225 degrees until done. The side and dessert recipes were interesting, but that's not what I buy a barbecue book for

If you buy this book, you wont learn how to BBQ. It doesnt cover enough (or any) on selecting meat, selecting the BBQ smoker, proper cooking technique, etc. But what you do get, that makes this a worthwhile purchase, is a huge amount of great recipies. Where else can you be be looking for BBQ sidedishes like potato salad and coleslaw, and find multiple recipies of each?

An absolutely wonderful kitchen tool for anyone who likes rubs, sauces and BBQ. My husband and I use this book religiously at least once a week and everything is great! The sauces and seasonings work well with all types of meat! BBQ certainly isn't just for breakfast anymore!

4 out of 5 stars Good book, better than the first, nice to add to a shooter's library.......2007-05-15

I would recommend this book for anyone interested in learning shooting from the ground up. Suarez takes a hard stance on technique and ideology in his first book, however the follow on series hits the mark.

Suarez appears to speak from experience, is definitely a focused shooter, and puts the reader in a frame of mind that is engineered towards combat effectiveness.

Some might find the intensity of attitude off putting but the knowledge provided far out weights the aformentioned intensity.

I would definitely recommend this book, along with several others as an addition to a shooters library.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Rocks!.......2006-08-07

The author knows his stuff and presents it in a clear, logical manner. He's a regular cop, not some champion marksman that names all sorts of techniques after himself, like the "Suarez Squat Shot", like some other shooting authors do.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one handgun book you must read........2005-07-01

This book should be required reading for anyone looking to use a handgun in a self defense manner. Whether you have your pistol in the bedside table drawer, or carry every day, if you intend to defend your life, and those of your family this book is a must read! Mr. Suarez knows his topic. The Tactical Rifle and The Tactical Shotgun should also be on your list.

5 out of 5 stars book burning Nazi's.......2005-02-02

There are some good reviews here - perhaps enough to determine whether this book is for you. I just thought a few things could be clarified. To suggest that the only viable market for this book is someone belonging to a militia is to suggest that only the militia are interested in self-defense. It is perhaps desirable to point out that not everyone purchases a firearm to be enthused. Nor does this fact equate them with more dubious individuals or groups (for all my fellows follow the law). Furthermore, to assert that this book is not intended for citizens authenticates the ignorance (or motives) of the writer.

The author of this book does not advocate nor teach the indiscriminate killing of individuals. Conversely, he advocates the discriminate use of deadly force to prevent the loss of one's life. If the reader cannot determine the intended audience at introduction, he should perhaps be reading this book to fine tune his reading comprehension skills rather than skills as a marksman.

The author does not "pander to our primal fears" but illustrates the need for tactics introduced. The only disturbing viewpoints that I was able to find (outside of comments to ignore some such individuals as have commented on this book) were the ones that advocated your Bill of Rights and ideas about freedom (conveniently located at the rear of the book). - I love America!

For those looking to purchase this book, I will spell it out. This book is about actual combat, not sharp shooting or being enthused. If this is your first book and you do not have any formal basic training, do yourself a big favor and purchase that with this book (its for your benefit as much as anyone else's). Also, become familiar with your local handgun laws if you have not already (also suggested by this author and common sense). -peace

5 out of 5 stars Packed with useful information.......2004-07-31

Please ignore the liberal whiners who have posted concerns about the information Mr. Suarez is offering in this book. This is a serious book dealing with lifesaving countermeasures to being seriously attacked by seriously dangerous criminals. If you are looking for a book covering the legality and moral considerations of a shoot/don't-shoot situation, Massad Ayoob has written several excellent books on the subject. This is not a book rehashing shooting fundamentals such as stance, sight alignment, and proper grip. I understand Mr. suarez has several other books covering those subjects. This is a book written for citizens and officers explaining how to minimize risks during building searches and clearing dwellings. It details how to conduct yourself tactically when the proverbial !@#$ has hit the fan. Most of the book is written for the individual going it alone, which is good. A lot of books on this subject focus on elite swat and navy seal team deployment, and lets be honest, if you are a navy seal, you've probably already been there and done this. There is an excellent chapter on team operation and communication, which works eqally well if the "team" consists of a husband and wife checking on the sound of breaking glass in the babie's room. Don't get me wrong, this book is written professionally and I am sure professionals could learn quite a few things from its reading. The information is well written and presented logically. the diagrams and pictures are easily followed and understood. Most importantly though the information mr. Suarez presents here is thorough, uncomplicated, straightforward and realistic. No space is wasted with the endless debates and doctrinal dissagreements that flesh out the bulk of other combat texts. No candy coating here either, just hard, real-world-tested facts. If you have already mastered the basics of small arms operations, this is the next step in becoming a viable defensive combatant.

For those of you who have managed in the past to find the right pattern and the perfect new fabric, only to give up in frustration when the fabric doesn't behave like anything you've used before, Fabric Savvy is here to help. Author Sandra Betzina, host of Home and Garden TV's Sew Perfect, has wrestled with just about every fabric out there, and she's lived to tell about it.

Perfectly suited to beginning and experienced sewers alike, this excellent guide devotes, in alphabetical order, two pages to each of 85 fabrics. For every material Betzina highlights a multitude of topics, including fabric facts (bulky/drape/breathable/how fabricated), suitability (types of projects), sewing tips, lay-out (and why it matters), interfacing, stitch length, seam finish, closures, and hemming. The categories are thorough, as is the scope of fabrics addressed: waterproof breathables, tencel, and lame, to name a few, along with 14 types of silk and 8 wools.

Color photographs accompany the descriptions of fabrics and projects, while helpful illustrations further explain the techniques used. Finally, Betzina offers a glossary of fabric terms and a thorough listing of contact information for fabric and alternative pattern companies, making Fabric Savvy a necessary resource for any sewing enthusiast. --Molly McElroy

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Sewing Various Fabrics.......2006-01-22

This was a great book for providing tips on sewing various fabrics. It contains a 2 page spread for each of the "85 different fabrics" available to the sewer. It includes info about recommended thread and needles, presser foot to use, best cutting method, pressing instructions, closures to use, facts about the fabric and the most suitable garments to make with the fabric.

In the back of the book, starting at page 174, there is an appendix which describes (with illustrations) the various seams, detailing, closures and hems. What would have made this a 5-star was if the book contained slightly more information for the advanced beginner sewer, such as:

~ how to determine the nap on fabric like velvet
                  ~ covered swimsuit fabric
~ glossary of terms used in the book, i.e. mush layers together to marry naps or marry sequins; underlining with silk organza (does this mean put in a lining?)

There is a glossary, but it does not address some of the terms scattered throughout the book. I am giving this book a 4.5 star rating.

5 out of 5 stars An irresistable resource for anyone with a sewing machine.......2005-11-06

Even if you mostly sew with ordinary fabrics, like cotton, it's worth owning a copy of this book. There are plenty of times when you stop in the store and finger a particularly lovely bit of satin, and wonder what's involved in sewing it. This book gives you a clear, brief summary of the essentials -- from which needle to use, to which presser foot, to the items for which the fabric is most appropriate. It takes the pressure out of fabric choice, and makes me feel more confident that yeah, I *could* make seat cushions with that $20/yard ultrasuede.

I hemmed and hawwed (so to speak) over buying this book, but I'm glad I did so.

                  5 out of 5 stars excellent shipping.......2005-08-22

                              5 out of 5 stars Well Written.......1999-10-21

Susan Dawes wrote a wonderful book. It's very easily followed and very easily applied. She has some wonderful suggestions in her book including but not limited to: ways to take a holistic approach to your life, things to do to improve your relationship with your husband, ideas for giving yourself a break and creative ideas for shortening your days (when you are at home with children). I read this book from front to back several times and still reference it periodically. I agree when mom's happy, everyone's happy and this book brings me one step closer to happiness.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must read book for moms of all ages!.......1999-06-27

Susan Dawes concisely summarizes day to day strategies for enhancing personal and family life. As she says "When mom's happy, everybody's happy". She presents a variety of suggestions for fulfillment whether one works outside the home or is a stay-at-home mom. She makes wonderful suggestions regarding dealing with demands and pressures facing American families. Each chapter is chocked full of great ideas that I have used over and over. These include topics from taking care of yourself to discipline. Her social work background is evident but the book is presented in a very readable fashion. As a woman's health nurse I recommend it to expectant moms as well as moms who are already experiencing parenting. It is a must reading!

5 out of 5 stars A happy and helpful read for Mom and her whole family........1999-06-26

"When Mom's Happy, Everyone's Happy" is a brisk and lively read, but more importantly, it is also an excellent and insightful resource for modern Moms (and their husbands and families) in a stressful world whose demands compete with the good and enjoyable family life. Written in a light and highly readable manner, the first section provides valuable, very useable tips and ideas for Mom; the second, for the whole family. I highly recommend this book for Moms and Dads and Children seeking more from their lives and relationships with each other. I have found it useful and recommend it to new mothers and learners of all ages and types. "When Mom's Happy, Everyone's Happy" is a happy and helpful read for Mom and her whole family.

                              Book Description

"A Gilbert is of no use without a Sullivan." With these words, W.S. Gilbert summed up his reasons for persisting in his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan despite the combative nature of their relationship. In fact, Michael Ainger suggests in Gilbert and Sullivan the success of the pair's work is a direct result of their personality clash, as each partner challenged the other to produce his best work. After exhaustive research into the D'Oyly Carte collection of documents, Ainger offers the most detailed account to date of Gilbert and Sullivan's starkly different backgrounds and long working partnership. Having survived an impoverished and insecure childhood, Gilbert flourished as a financially successful theater professional, married happily and established himself as a property owner. His sense of proprietorship extended beyond real estate, and he fought tenaciously to protect the integrity of his musical works. Sullivan, the product of a supportive family who nourished his talent, was much less satisfied with stability than his collaborator. His creative self-doubts and self-demands led to nervous and physical breakdowns, but it also propelled the team to break the successful mode of their earliest work to produce more ambitious pieces of theater, including The Mikado and The Yeoman of the Guards. Offering previously-unpublished draft libretti and personal letters, this thorough double-biography will be an essential addition to the library of any Gilbert and Sullivan fan.

                              4 out of 5 stars Side-by-Side with G & S.......2007-06-27

This unusual approach to a biography works well. It gives new insights into G & S both as individuals and as a 'duo', and is obviously very well-researched. Two areas I found especially interesting were the information about their family backgrounds, and the large number of quotes from correspondance, not only between G & S as individuals, but between them and so many other people of their time. All in all, a very enjoyable read.

However, I do have a problem with one particular area which I can only assume is the result of ignorance on the part of the author and/or his proof-readers. Would anyone ever think of using a lower case 'q' for Queen Victoria? All titles should be capitalized. When referring to Her Majesty's eldest son, Edward, he is called the prince of Wales when it should be the Prince of Wales: this error is repeated in the case of his brother, the Duke of Edinburgh and other people with titles. How about some characters from the G & S operas - sir Joseph Porter? captain Corcoran? the mikado of Japan? major-general Stanley?..... I'm sure the author would be upset if he saw his name printed as mr. Ainger: I certainly would be in his place! I may be nit-picking in the opinion of some people, but, as an American, I have to say: "Let's get these things right!" My hope is that they will be corrected when the book is reprinted.

                              5 out of 5 stars "Of convincing detail full . . .".......2005-04-09

In the preface of this dual biography of Gilbert and Sullivan, Michael Ainger draws attention to the previous book dealing with the same topic, Leslie Baily's "The Gilbert and Sullivan Book." Ainger points out that in the half century that has passed since the publication of Baily's book, great collections of Gilbert-and-Sullivaniana have become available in Britain and America, and that he has been able to incorporate their contents into this book.

In the past few days I have read both books for comparison (which makes this my third time through with Baily, not much when spread over fifty years.) There can be no doubt that Mr. Ainger crams more facts into his closely set and rather gray-looking 504 pages than Baily put in his typographically more generous and colorful 475.

Here is an example: Baily reproduces a newspaper engraving in which Gilbert and Sullivan are present in a courtroom as they attempt to defend their ownership of "H.M.S. Pinafore" against the claims of some disgruntled former financial backers. Standing in the dock and testifying is the great actor-manager, Sir Henry Irving--employer of novelist Bram Stoker and model for his Count Dracula. Baily does not explain what the greatest Hamlet of the Nineteenth Century had to do with "H.M.S. Pinafore." Ainger has no room for the old drawing but he does explain what Irving was saying. (It had to do with the technical meaning of the word, "run," when applied to theatrical productions. Now you know.)

Or consider this: Baily often refers to the lovely, wealthy, cultivated, married American lady--irrevocably separated from her husband--with whom Sullivan had a long and intimate liaison. Ainger peers into the diaries that Sullivan kept under lock and key to speculate on whether the symbols used referred to his sexual activities with her.

After reading both books together, I find myself with the impression that Ainger set out to fill in all the gaps in Baily's narrative. To a great extent, he has succeeded in doing just that. But I am not convinced that the result was worth all of his effort. From Baily's book as well as from practically everybody in the past century who has written about him, it is clear that W. S. Gilbert was often thin-skinned, irascible and pugnacious. That fact may be taken as given. I, for one, have little interest in the details of his petty quarrels, and especially not in those that never impinged on the creation or production of the Savoy operas.

Ainger has written a serious and dense book for dedicated fans of Gilbert and Sullivan. He does not write of the operas, themselves, but of their texts and development--quite different things. Ainger is scholarly and he expects much from his readers. Unless you are pretty close to the stage at which you are able to quote long passages of G&S without written aid, you are going to find Ainger's accounts of dialogue changes fairly heavy going.

Baily was a better writer than Ainger. He had a clear grasp of his audience (after all, he published four popular editions in just four years.) It consisted of people who enjoyed the works of G&S and had some familiarity with them: fans, not experts. Above all, he knew that he was writing the epic tale of the rise and fall of a great partnership.

For a reader who feels some interest in G&S and who desires only a single good book about them, Baily's book is, hands down, the best choice. The reader with deeper interest should acquire both, Baily for narrative and overall architecture of the tale, Ainger for nitty-gritty detail. For the hopelessly addicted fanatic who inflicts stunned guests with detailed comparisons of the electronic recordings of the 1920s, the mono recordings of the 1950s and the stereo recordings of the 1960s, who wonders why the pre-1920 acoustic recordings haven't yet appeared on CD, get both and add to them Wren's "A Most Ingenious Paradox." While both Ainger and Baily are basically sound, Wren's book abounds in wrong-headed analyses and fatuous conclusions, but his factual underpinning is reliable enough. Demolishing Wren's arguments is an excellent way for exercising your wits and the pleasure he affords when you exasperatedly throw his book across the room is both great and easily renewable.

                                Book Description

Moses Maimonides' life reads like an adventure story. Personal tragedies, gained and lost fortunes, shipwrecks, all were part of his tumultuous tale, as well as sudden and bewildering fame as court physician to the Sultan Saladin and all his wives and concubines.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent biography.......2003-12-02

I am twelve years old, and I got this book for my bat-mitzva. I loved it and learned a lot and I would recommend it to both adults and children. I particularly liked the way Maimonides helped women during those hard times.

                                5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, well-researched biography.......2002-05-18

As a librarian, I was alerted to this excellent biography by Booklist and by The Library Journal, which both gave it excellent reviews. I don't read every book I order, but since I am particularly interseted in Maimonides, I did read it, and with great pleasure. I have studied much of Maimonides' work, and many books that analyzed his work, but Arbel's book is the only one fulfilling the need for a lively biography that really tells about Maimonides, his character and his relationships.

The book is extremely well-written, easy to understand, and will be entirely comprehesible to the secular reader. You don't have to be a Maimonides expert, a philosophy student, or a religious scholar to enjoy it. Yet any scholar will appreciate Arbel's historical research and grasp of the era he discusses.

My only criticism was that I wished the book were longer and continued into the second generation (Maimonides' son, Abraham, was a fascinating character). However, I realized that the book is a part of a series of biographies, the well-received Lives and Legacies (all called "A Spiritual Biography") from Crossroad Publishing, so Arbel probably followed certain guidelines as to length. I am very much looking forward to the publication of Arbel's biography of Rabbi Hillel, which apparently he is writing now.

2 out of 5 stars A New Biography of Maimonides.......2002-02-17

The appearance of a new biography of Maimonides is always important, if only because it happens infrequently.

What we need, and do not yet have in English, is an excellent and scholarly biography of Maimonides, like Netanyahu's biography of Abarbanel.

Ilil Arbel's new biography, entitled Maimonides, A Spiritual Biography, does not fill that bill. However, for those who are already reading Maimonides, it will fill in the historical gaps reasonably well. The book is based on secondary and tertiary sources, with the exception of the more historically significant items of Maimonides' correspondence and some of the shorter works, which the author shows familiarity with. The author is fluent in Hebrew, and may be an Israeli, it is not clear from the jacket material. That material indicates that she is a "Writer and editor, and has a Ph.D. in the field of mythology and folklore, and is a regular contributor of Judaic myths to Encyclopedia Mythica, her next book is A biography of Hillel, she resides in New York City".

The book comes with a full index and a short bibliography. There are a very few notes, more would have been desirable. I would like to know where she got some of her material. There is a Chronology which she confesses is based on the usual consensus opinions but not based on any research of her own.

I do not think the book will do anyone any harm. She pointedly stays away from giving comment or analysis of the Guide or the Mishneh Torah, and for that reason, I do not understand why she calls this a spiritual biography. The excitement that I get from the works of Maimonides themselves is not well communicated by the author.

What she does do that helps make this book of contemporary significance is the integration of Geniza material from the Ben Ezra synagogue in Cairo, Egypt, about which I recently wrote on in connection with the Spertus College of Judaica exhibit. She does know this material, and has spent some time with the writings of S.D. Goitein, the acknowledged expert in that field. She also has listed in her bibliography several contemporary Israeli books on Maimonides. All of these sources help to provide depth and context in Maimonides' story.

Among these positive attributes I would randomly site her extended treatment of the unending controversies between Maimonides and the Gaon of Baghdad, Shmuel Ben Ali, who was the leader of the Babylonian Academy and saw himself as the universal Jewish authority. She also fills in the personalities of Maimonides son Abraham, and his student Joseph Ibn Aknin, for whom the Guide of the Perplexed was dedicated.

On the controversial issue of Maimonides' feigned conversion to Islam, she fails to explain the meaning of such conversions, and leaves her readers confused. At one point she states flatly we can rest assured that he never converted to Islam, and at other times she indicates just as flatly that he feigned observance of Islam. She should have explained that Islam does not need conversion at all as Islam views people as having an Islamic nature which only needs to be realized. Such realization takes place when the individual acknowledges the formula of the divinity of Allah and the prophecy of Mohammed in a mosque. Maimonides himself writes that since this is all that is required, together with occasional attendance at Mosque prayers, a Jew need not question his own faith if he has to do these acts for the sake of survival.

Admittedly our determination that Maimonides feigned such conversion is based on circumstantial evidence, but it is exceptionally good circumstantial evidence. Apart from his own words in his epistle on the subject, we know for a fact that no Jew, and particularly no Jew of public prominence like Maimonides and his father, could have survived long in Fez, Morocco under the Almohads without feigning Islam. Then there is the well known case, discussed by Arbel, of the prosecution brought by Abul Arab ibn Moisha in Cairo. Moisha had known Maimonides in Fez, as an apparent Muslim, and was shocked to find him as the head of the Jewish community in Cairo. He brought a prosecution against Maimonides for the capital heresy of converting from Islam. Maimonides' protector, El Fadil, Saladin's vizier, was the judge in the case. Arbel states that Fadil's ruling was to declare Maimonides never really adopted the fate or converted but only kept up a fabulous disguise and therefore could not have had a relapse from Islam. What really happened, according to Dr. Joel Kraemer, was that the court ruled coerced conversions were not effective conversions in Islam, citing Quran, and Maimonides could not be held guilty for feigning conversion under coercion.

Like all books nowadays, the editors don't really do any editing, and there are many obvious typographical errors in the text. One howler is the author's apparent inability to distinguish pray from prey (twice!) as in
". . . It prayed on his mind."

The book is neither long nor difficult to read, and the author has a moderately engaging prose style. She seems to be genuinely interested in the details of Maimonides life, and for those reasons the book should be read.

                                5 out of 5 stars A marvelous, thrilling read.......2001-10-28

In this exciting, vibrant biography, the author succeeds where all others failed -- she brings Maimonides and his contemporaries to life. A few other books, all of them at least thirty years old, claim to be his biographies, but they are really only discussions of his work, with a few biographical details merely tacked on. Arbel's book, on the other hand, is truly the story of the life of a most interesting man, set against the vast panorama of a turbulent era. The intriguing details, taken from rarely used historical materials, help the reader visualize the scandals, controversies, court intrigues, and wars, as well as the daily lives, fashions, food, entertainment, and houses of people in Spain, Morocco, Israel, and Egypt of the twelfth century.

Arbel obviously likes and admires Maimonides, but she does not worship him, and is not averse to showing his human, less than perfect side. She may run into trouble with the more orthodox rabbis, perhaps, but for the general reader it is a wonderful approach, and you end the book feeling that you have spent some time with a human being, not the demigod that is presented by other authors. I truly enjoyed the book.
