Very few books have so moved me, by their sheer power and imagery. The plot was flawless, and the language simple, yet uniquely expressive. The characters stared back at you from the pages of this masterpiece with vivid realism, you feel and experience their every emotion, and you virtually find yourself navigating along every sequence as the story unfolded, with pulse-pounding excitement. The world of the powerful and the criminal element in our society has never been so passionately and colorfully potrayed as Ms. Basile has done, possibly in the same league as Mario Puzo's "Godfather" and Irving Wallace's "The Word". A very important piece of Literary fiction.

From the author: Objective: In health promotion studies, young age, male gender, low education, and substance use have been found to be relevant predictors of loss to follow-up. The purpose of this study was to assess factors of loss to follow-up after screening and tailored brief advice for alcohol problems in an emergency department setting. Method: A randomized controlled intervention study was conducted and followed up at 12 months. At baseline (T0), 2,562 consecutive trauma patients (62.1% male) were screened for substance use (smoking, alcohol consumption, and illicit drug use) and for socioeconomic factors (income, relationship status, and education). Patients with five points or more in the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test randomly received tailored brief advice on alcohol and were followed up at 3 (T3), 6 (T6), 9 (T9), and 12 months (T12). Results: At baseline, median age was 32 years (range: 18-89). There was a loss of 950 participants (37.1%) from T0 to T12. Loss to follow-up was strongly dependent on social factors. In participants with a high school diploma, only smoking was predictive of loss to follow-up (odds ratio [OR] = 1.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.43-2.29). In participants with no high school diploma, alcohol problems alone predicted loss to follow-up (medium level of alcohol problems, OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.09-2.27; high level of alcohol problems, OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 0.96-2.76;p = .017). Smoking (OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 0.97-1.89) and, for smokers, age 18-31 years (OR = 1.65, 95% CI = 0.98-2.78) showed a tendency toward an increased risk of loss to follow-up. Conclusions: After screening and a brief intervention in an emergency department, substance use and differences in education level predicted loss to follow-up. Patients with alcohol problems and no high school diploma are at increased risk of becoming lost to follow-up.

This is a fantastic reference book for anyone who is a fan of Hazel-Atlas glassware. The pictures are crisp and clear - the colors are vivid - and every page is full of photos. Not all of the Hazel-Atlas glassware is marked and this book is a valuable guide to authenticate those items, as well as being an interesting look into the many pieces of glassware that they produced. Very nice to have by the computer when you are surfing ebay.

The identification and value guide are very easily read. The pictures are of great help in identifying the various styles of Hazel-Atlas glass. There is a brief history of the glass from 1885 until the factory was sold to the Continental Can Company in 1956. All in all, well worth the purchase.
Another Excellent Florence Glass Book.......2004-12-31
I was really impressed with this book. It filled in many of the little identification gaps that I had missing as a glass collector. There are so many items listed here that were not in his other books. It was enjoyable.......I read it in one day.......informative.....I was able to id many pieces.....and beautifully illustrated. I like the outline key too!

Potted Histories is a beautiful book which gives the impression of being much bigger than its real size. It is a book that makes me want to have all the plants and flowers depicted in it (the pictures are just lovely, with a romantic touch), and it has a very special way to show how life can be much nicer with plants surrounding us in our own home.
This paperback edition is of a great, great quality. It has a lot of photos, also of a very good quality. It is delightful to have a look at them again and again. I recommend this 144 pages of beauty to every person who likes to sit down with a good "friend" and enjoy a moment of vibrant peace and silence... maybe with a warm cup of tea or coffee.
Like the authors say in their Introduction, "this is a very unusual house plant book - a cross between horticulture, natural history and botany. But why?". Treat yourself to this fascinating book and have the joy of answering this question by yourself.

Mostly interesting essays with Modern Orthodox bent.......2006-08-17
This is a set of essays honoring the former Rabbi of the Orthodox Jewish Center of NY, many with an Orthodox bias/assumptions & some with extensive Hebrew/transliterated words. The print is small, but it's quite readable--I enjoyed it while learning about American Orthodoxy. Excepting Zimmer's essay & a few disparaging remarks (of Reform), there are few references to other branches of Judaism. Many essays are academic with balanced inputs such as Baumel & Schacter's on the disputed suicide of 93 girls in the Cracow ghetto & Zimmer's essay on head coverings. Other essays address the afterlife, bodily pleasure, Jewish ethics, repentance, & the Holocaust. Leo Jung's positions on issues are addressed in a few of the essays/remembrances including a short interview with Penkower. Major issues & controversies include:
ORTHODOXY: per Marc Raphael--p. 41: "Rabbi Leo Jung's understanding of American orthodoxy was the compatibility of `Torah-True' Judaism & modern thought...Jung insisted that `Judaism need not be afraid of science; science is not its enemy, p. 53: Jung was certain that a kind Jew was better than a learned Jew, p. 54: Put the needs of the Jewish people above the intricacies of whose interpretation of Judaism was most correct, & p. 74: `I believe in the absolute accuracy of our Hebrew scriptures text.'" This is contrasted with p. 39: Mordecai Kaplan, founder of Reconstructianism & former Rabbi of the Jewish Center--"Nothing can be more repugnant to the thinking man of today than the fundamental doctrine of orthodoxy, which is that the tradition is infallible."
ANTISEMITISM: p. 208: Penkower: "Why pick on the Jews as the classic enemy?" Jung--"If you are a genuine egotist, then anybody who is not abominable is hated by you" & p. 213: "Antisemitism, rather than the fault of the Jews, is but the manifestation of `a general attitude towards non-conformists."
HOLOCAUST: Kranzler's scathing criticism of Stephen Wise for going beyond his own group's self-interest (& calling liberal WASPs racists) was very biased. Despite some factual evidence, he had many unsupported assertions, questionable sources, & attributions of motivation. Yet he admits that most Jews agreed with Wise's evaluation of FDR! Perhaps that's why Wise wasn't voted out of his position. In Norman Lamm's article, p. 196: "Jung said people didn't believe Hitler really meant extermination." But, per Monty Penkower, Jung said: p. 215:, "FDR's complicity in the annihilation of innocent millions by Germany & her collaborators...God was not responsible for the Holocaust. It was Roosevelt's fault."
ADAPTATION: Most Orthodox views to the contrary, per Eric Zimmer: p. 336 "Professor Jacob Katz suggests that in many instances a `ritual intuition' of the Jewish public determined Jewish observances, contrary to the more formal decision & rulings of the contemporary rabbis," p. 338 R. Yehudah Aryeh de Modena of 17th c. Venice "'The words of the sages are to be understood in accordance with the place, the time, & the individual to whom they are addressed'...his insistence that climactic factors & social mores prevalent in the society should be considered determining factors in rabbinic rulings is striking,' & p. 345 note 82 R. Joel Katz, Budapest 1946 head covering responsa--"Let those who are stringent be so with themselves, but not with others."
