A great story, but difficult to read.......2006-02-05
A huge wagon train split up at the western end of the great salt lake. Most of the emigrants took the traditional route to California. Some of them decided to go through Hasting's cutoff. Hasting had gone to California on the regular route. He wrote The Emigrant's Guide To California. Inside the book, there was a new route, a route which Hastings thought up. He had never actually tried it out when the Donner Party came. It turned out to be much rougher, and even longer than the regular route. 3 people died before they even reached Donner Lake. At Donner Lake, the party was trapped in the snow. They built several cabins, but the Donners themselves never got to the lake. They put up several tents on Alder Creek. They ran out of food, and sent several small, unsuccessful parties to California. They became desperate, and sent out one last party, "The Forlorn Hope." Those who were strong enough, set out for California. There were 15 people in the Forlorn Hope. The first to die of hunger and cold was a 13 year old, Lemuel. His sister couldn't watch as the rest of the Forlorn Hope ate Lemuel. More people died, but eventually, the remaining seven, reached Sutter's fort. Meanwhile, James F. Reed, who had been banished from the party, assembled a rescue party. The first try to reach the people at the lake was unsuccessful. Eventually they get to the lake, and rescue the people they could. This is a great book about the Donner Party. It was written in a way that makes it hard to read for anyone under 12, but it captured the drama perfectly.
Keep a paper bag handy........2002-10-05
Maudlin, hypersentimental tripe, worthless as either a history or a scientific inquiry into the events surrounding its subject. A wandering bard's laments with a street organ would be more valuable as a historical source than this piece of sycophancy, a purported "history" bursting at the seams with errors and largely devoid of accurate facts, chronology or topography.
McGlashan befriended Donner party survivors during compiling his material and what he eventually thrusts on the world as a "history" is a ludicrous, simpering ode to both the living and the dead concerned with no regard for the truth, a pathetically transparent attempt at fanning his new-found "friends" raw sensibilities on the subject (no pun intended), and appeasing his own quixotic knights-on-white-steeds world-view.
Bancroft, talking about the Donner party incident in his "History of California", says "C.F. McGlashan published a volume on the subject in 1879, treating it in a manner that has left little or nothing to be desired". Was Bancroft under the gun or under the influence when he wrote those words? We shall never know. What we do know is that such irresponsible eulogizing by his peers catapulted McGlashan's ham-handed, lopsided "history" to undeserved posterity.
If you want to read a real history of the Donner party incident, George Stewart's "Ordeal by Hunger" would be a good place to start. In comparison, McGlashan's composition is good for entertainment. His flowery language frequently elicits chuckles, not a minor achievement considering the extreme grimness of the subject matter.
Had McGlashan, obese with flowery prose and sentimental rambling stumbled onto a certain grizzled gathering at the shores of Lake Truckee in the winter of 1846, the questionable gourmets present may have appreciated him far better than the modern student of history....

Book is riveting, hard to put down, and incredible........1998-11-06
It's hard to believe that what is written down in this book ir real. But, real it is. Once you start reading it you can't put it down. It holds you spellbound. Pulls at your heartstrings as you read what this party had to go through. It would be impossible today for people to stand up to what these people did. This book is well worth the reading. These people had the strength, fortitude that is seldom found today.
McGlashan's Work Valuable, But Flawed.......1997-09-11
While certainly a worthwile book on the tragedy of the Donner Party, the book does have its weaknesses. Specifically, McGlashan's research is less than objective. As George Stewart points out in his better book on the subject, "Ordeal By Hunger," McGlashan was very sloppy with his facts. His personal friendship with a few of the Donner Party survivors also biases his writing. Still, the book is a very important read for those interested in this historic tragedy. For the money, though, Stewart's book is the better choice

The book is an interesting compilation of essays on financial innovation and the convergence of markets. It takes the reader through diverse structures and strategies to take advantage of capital and insurance markets, and shows the benefits of globalization and disintermediation. I found it very useful for practitioners in finance and risk management and for academics.

Illustrations and photographs were breathtaking. Price comparisons were helpful, but very little content on rug parameters and significance with regard to final results and quality.

Beautiful. A clear and concise readable guidline. There were a lot of wonderful pictures and all the information was very clear and understandable. A very valuable source for anyone who is thinking of buying an Oriental Rug.

First entering service in 1941 the legendary 'all-wooden' Mosquito was one of the best twin-engined aircraft of its size to see action in World War II. The addition of radar turned the Mosquito into the RAF's premier night fighter, and it achieved great success in the defence of Britain, with some 600 raiders and 600 V1 rockets falling to its guns between 1942 and 1945. The design's superb performance, and ability to escape interception by enemy fighters also made the Mosquito the ideal choice for the RAF's photographic reconnaissance force. Furst's First Good; Could Be Better.......2006-09-27
Stephen Fursts's mini-autobiography is interesting. As a Type 2 diabetic, he let himself gain weight and decline in health to the point where his neuropathy (loss of feeling in the limbs) allowed a sore on his foot to become infected. Faced with amputation, he made several lifestyle changes and not only kept his foot but lost half his weight and improved his overall health.
The second part of the book is his own commentary interspersed with recipes. The recipes are interesting, though not always appetizing. For instance, his instructions on making diabetic ketchup makes you question of you ever want any kind of ketchup period. He uses things from around the house and supermarket to create these substitutes for dishes he decided he liked but could not eat. What he lacks in style here he makes up for in creativity.
The downsides of the book are few but glaring. In one instance he calls the reality show Survivor as Survival. There are a few of the naggling little mistakes throughout the book and one realizes that Furst probably wrote the book without the help of a ghostwriter but also wonders why the ADA editors didn't do their job completely.
A second edition with more recipes, ana expanded autobiography, and an update to the present (the book was published in 2002) would all take this book from just pretty good to excellent.

What a fantastic memoire! I've enjoyed Furst's films for many years and was delighted to discover this book. I've struggled with weight my entire life and it seems like about this time (New Year's) every year I end up searching for another "diet" to follow. This year I get to say "NO" to the diet books and read Furst's book instead. Furst doesn't preach- he only shares his experience, his hope, and his fabulous sense of humor! The book will leave you feeling upbeat and ready to conquer the battle of the bulge using his sensible lifestyle recommendations that can be taylor-made to fit your life. You won't be hungry a moment and a guarantee you'll lose weight following his recommendations. Enjoy!
I finally see the light!.......2003-02-03
I highly recommend this honest, funny and motivating book! I have been on every diet that has been out on the market. These diets always left me starving. Thanks to Stephens book for the first time I finally see the light! This book teaches you that you can feel full while losing weight. Our media sells us starve yourself diets that don't work. This book points you in the right direction to eating healthier fat free foods and had great recipes. I have tried all of these recipes and can tell you I love them! Diabetics will find hope, courage and a good laugh in this book. Thank you Stephen for helping me finally really understand that I can lose weight (or maintain a healthy weight) and still feel full. I have read a many books on weight loss and it was Confessions of a Diabetic Couch Potato that finally made me see the light. Bravo Stephen!

Finaly, a keep the weight off book.any book will tell you, how to loseweight. This is the first to to tellyou how to keep it off. To paraphrase the book ... diet booksdeal, with what people can see, the FAT. not what people can`t see YOUINSIDE. they CAN'T They're not YOU.they're just books ... This is must read for us "Flounders"out there LOL ;-) even for those,who have ask the person, sitting at the next table in a restaurnt. Great baby book.......2007-04-05
I love this baby book because it includes just the right amount of information. Some baby books leave room for so much information that I wouldn't be able to keep up and others are too skimpy. I also love the spiral binding. It includes all the things I look for; A place for an ultrasound picture, a family tree/chart, current events (president, gas$$, ect.) and it goes up to Kindergarten. The only thing this is missing is an envelope in the back for extra mementos and pictures. The other reason I didn't put 5 stars is because the cover looks like it's a "boys" baby book, but it could be used for either.
Excellent baby book!.......2004-08-22
This is an excellent baby book. While I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter, I looked at every baby book I could and just couldn't find a satisfactory one. And since I wasn't too pleased with the book I used for my 1st daughter I didn't want to buy another one. I stumbled across this book and love it! It has spaces for so much information, including pictures. I am so glad I found this book. I am going to buy one for my friend.

This is such a great book to keep track of all your baby's milestones! They grow so fast, it's hard to keep up with them, let alone remember when they did what. It makes a great gift to all new parents and parents to be! The circus theme is so cute and it works for a boy or a girl! The babies in the photographs are just adorable!!!

Impressive in its breadth of research as well as for its devotion to interdisciplinary work in music history, Beethoven after Napoleon challenges accepted views by illustrating the influence of German Romantic political thought in the formation of the artist's mature style. Beethoven's political views, Rumph argues, were not quite as liberal as many have assumed. While scholars agree that the works of the Napoleonic era such as the Eroica Symphony or Fidelio embody enlightened, revolutionary ideals of progress, freedom, and humanism, Beethoven's later works have attracted less political commentary. Rumph contends that the later works show clear affinities with a native German ideology that exalted history, religion, and the organic totality of state and society. He claims that as the Napoleonic Wars plunged Europe into political and economic turmoil, Beethoven's growing antipathy to the French mirrored the experience of his Romantic contemporaries. Rumph maintains that Beethoven's turn inward is no pessimistic retreat but a positive affirmation of new conservative ideals.
