Very interesting read........2003-10-14
I don't read much. I found this book on this site, read the reviews, decided to order it and give it a chance. Of all the books i have read, this is the most interesting and funniest books.
After showing a few funny parts to my friends, they all said i have a sick humour. One part reading about a guy who tried to kill him self by jumping off a building but fails. The way it was written was soo funny. Anyway, there are many many more interesting/funny parts.
After i read it i came online to buy Wags first book, but because it is no where to be found, i haven't been able to get it yet. However i have bought 2 other books similar this 'My Life in the NYPD."
Very enjoyable read.
Wags delivers the goods - - NYPD the real way!.......2002-08-26
Jimmy does it again! This book deals with his years in the NYPD, and goes right up to the start of his PI career (the first book). As before he delivers the goods retelling his most amazing and dazzling stories of life and crime in New York in a personal and well written way. The book also deals with the person behind the badge, the associates, the friends, the family, and not the least the importance of not letting the job get to you. Starting out in the 60's to the early 90's the way cops work has changed tremendously and Wags takes you on that ride!!! Recommended read.
The best non-fiction NYPD Book I've ever read.......2002-06-05
I picked this book up in of all places an Eckards drugstore and expected something that would keep my interest yet not be very memorable. Instead what i got was one of the finest books I have ever read period. The reason this book works so well is because Wags has no ego. No stories are present in a way to make him a hero and honesty rings throughout the entire book. The other reviewers have already mentioned the layout of the book so I will only say that this book contains stories you will never forget. I work in NYC and it is extremely interesting to read about the City in to 70s and 80s when it was cesspool..it really makes one appreciate Guliani and the miracle he performed. If I had to draw a parallel to this book, I would compare it to the best of Wambaugh. Wags write about so many fascinating characters that each chapter is like a mini book unto itself. Very importantly, Wags finishes each story with an update on the individual and or event, so you are not left wondering what happened. All in all, the finest police writing I have ever read.
Authentic, fast paced and action packed.......2002-03-27
James Wagner, nicknamed "Jimmy the Wags" is a retired New York City street cop who, with the help of writer Patrick Picciarelli, also a retired cop, describes his police experiences in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It's an authentic voice that rings with the cadence of the city and the job he worked day after day, dealing with the dregs of society and everyday crime, as well as some of the major social issues of the time.
We first meet Jimmy as a nine-year old boy, listening to Dragnet with his police officer father in their Staten Island home. We follow him through the police academy and then out to the streets. We meet his fellow cops and feel the pressures of the job, watching some of them turn into alcoholics or commit suicide. We see how many of the rules are bent to accommodate the reality of what is going on in the street. We're right alongside Jimmy, feeling his anger and despair when he goes to funeral services for fellow cops brutally gunned down. We meet celebrities and junkies and Hell's Angels and other assorted oddball characters. We're surprised at some stories, and we cringe at others and wonder how one man could have experienced so many outrageous things. Then we realize that these are the highlights of a long career, all compressed into a fast paced, action packed narrative with something new on every page. It's a good story, well told. Recommended.
the ring of truth.......2002-03-19
This second book by the 'Wags' is a thrilling ride through the streets of lower Manhatten with the siren going full blast. Written in a no-nonsense style, here is a book about New York that you can really get your teeth into. If you know NYC, then you know that there is little, if any, exaggeration. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and every one of the weird situations and perverted personalities has the ring of truth. What a great adventure it was for me, who was a teenager on the streets of New York, to read what was really going on behind the scenes, the stories you never got to read. This isn't just a book about brutality in the streets. Wagner is a cop with a heart, and had a passion for his job. Although the tone is often nostalgic, it is never overly sentimental or mawkish. Here is a beautiful kaleidoscope of the city in all its rawness. Read it and see!

A No Frills, Filler-Free Guide to Painting Your House.......2002-03-30
This book's unusual encyclopedia-like format is not what the DIY painter might expect upon first glance. Subjects are listed alphabetically("Acrylic"..."Brushes"..."Painting as a Profession"...etc.)with one or more brief yet comprehensive paragraphs under each subject, accompanied by photos and illustrations. There are a *lot* of subjects covering almost anything you would want to know about painting a house; yet this arraingment allows for a quick reference to a particular subject without having to consult an index or otherwise wade through text to find what you want. Especially helpful is a second table of contents, "Do the Job Right", which takes you through a job step by step from "Prep Work" to "Clean up" with page numbers taking you to the necessary subject heading for each step. My only gripe with this book is that the publishers didn't see fit to keep it in print. But if you can pick one up used or at your local library, you can't go too far wrong.

I'VE LOVE THIS BOOK. AND I'VE READ OVER A DOZEN........2004-06-10
This is my most treasured painting bible.
My house is a mess. Virtually everything needs serious work. Dixon gives me the confidence to tackle one project after another. His writing style is straightforward, reassuring, inspirational. He tells you everything you need to know to complete a job and be happy with it. Every painstaking stage of prep, helpful tips on additives, priming, carrying out each stage of painting process under every possible circumstance. I borrowed Dixon's book from the library so often that I spent more than the cost of it on overdue fines.
Now it's mine. All mine.
A Correction.......2002-02-01
Not much to add to the review below, but the description states that the book is 'color throughout'. In fact, most of the photos are in black and white. However, this does not detract from the information contained. There is a color section showing some house exteriors when discussing color choices. A good choice for the new homeowner who has never painted and wants to know how to do it right. It doesn't take much more effort to do the job right than to do it wrong for lack of knowledge.

This is one of those picture books for someone who has never painted anything before. NOT FOR a pro. I ended up skimming some of it. But There were a few points mentioned that would be helpful to someone who has never painted before. So if you are looking to fix up that living room or siding in this tight market and have never painted... try this.

I like this book very much. Not only does it answer color questions for inside my house, but it gives me color guidance and inspiration for the outside of my house (which is in dire need of a paint job). The photography in the book is lovely . The detailed instruction for choosing colors makes it easier than I thought it would be. This beautiful book is a useful tool.

My wife and I found this book very helpful in determining colors for the outside of our house. I learned what was needed to prep and paint the house as well. My wife enjoyed the information on color for our rooms and is planning a color scheme. This book is worth the investment.
Quick and Easy Paint Color Solutions.......2003-07-11
I gave this book to several friends as house warming and wedding gifts. Both friends said they loved the book, but more than that, they were able to get use out of it. One friend found a beautiful putty paint color for the outside of her house. Her house looks amazing with charcoal colored shutters. She is so happy with the result. My other friend chose a color scheme for her living room, dining room and family room. She said the book made it easy. I have since purchased a copy for myself. I'm reading it now and am getting very inspired to make changes in my own home.
It's Got It All!.......2003-06-25
This is a very comprehensive guide for choosing colors for both the interior and exterior of your home. It includes everything you would ever need to know about color, painting techniques, and everything in between. This is the only guide that I will need to accomplish my goals. There is simply nothing about the color selection and painting process that isn't thoughtfully addressed in this book. Plus, the photographs and are beautiful! It's got it all.

WELL I READ THIS BOOK AND IN MY OPINION GROWING UP IN THE STREETS OF CHICAGO, YES DRUGS, SHOOTINGS ETC...THIS DIDN'T SEEM LIKE ANYTHING NEW TO ME, SO HE SOLD DOPE, GOT FAMOUS AND NOW LIVES LARGE. END OF STORY, MY LIFE WAS MUCH ROUGHER, HE HAD A GOOD HOME FROM WHAT IT SEEMS, C'MON GOOD IN SCHOOL, GRADUATES? PEOPLE I KNEW WERE LUCKY TO MAKE IT TO HIGH SCHOOL, WORK WAS FIRST IF YOU HAD TO SURVIVE. HE IS SO COMMERCIAL! THIS IS SO PHONY OR SOMETHING, RAGS TO RICHES? HE CHOSE TO BE BAD HE SAID IT IN HIS BOOK, HE WANTED TO BE THE THUG THAT HE WAS AND NOW I SEE HIM LIKE A MAMA'S BOY WHO JUST WANTED TO BE A PUNK AND THAT IS IT, I THINK HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT HIS STORY TO THE KIDS IN LONG BEACH, LOTS OF FOLKS GREW UP THIS WAY OR WORSE, HE JUST GOT A RECORD DEAL.

Very confused book, very confused man.......2006-03-19
Snoop tries to please everyone with his tale. He wants to make his momma proud by talking about God and spirituality, but he wants to continue his gangsta facade. In the end it comes out completely hypocritical by him essentially saying, "I'm doin God's work by pimpin these mutha ***** ho's, N***!"
The book has it's moments. If Snoop wasn't interesting, why would I have bothered reading about him? But this a book to sleep walk through. Written on a 5th grade reading level, it made for good toilet time.
Don't expect anything profound, nothing truly revealing, and you won't be disappointed. It's simply a PR work.

In this story are you trying to say that you died and the devil would make you rich and famous if you gave him your soul and you agreeded? Or is that another book? If its this book then i rate it a 1 and that's that. I wish there was a no star(0)or negative 5 but all the choice I have is 1 so whatever.

Does anyone out there understand what a Gost Writer is? I suppose not... A gost writer is someone that writes peoples books for them. If only a famous personality could actually go out and write a best selling book all by themself. In a perfect world...
But setting this aside, Snoop's literary creation isn't that bad. I think he contradicts himself entirly too much,. but what can I say? It frustrates me to bump his almums and hear him drawling on about Thug this and Thug that, only to go out and write some preachy tale about how gangs and drugs are wack.
However, for some reason or another, I respect Snoop as an artist and a family man.
And despite the fact that his new stuff sucks, his book was sitll partially enlightening.

Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel's introduction to "Nightmares" as a testimonial that "must be read" is perfect in its directness and honesty.
I have never read an account of the Holocaust that was both so intimate in its portrayal of the horrors, and so complete in its explanation of how the Nazis created an infrastructure to carry-out their unimaginable cruelty and genocide.
Charmatz lived through more than anyone could expect a human to bear: the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto, Auschwitz death camp, the Death March and forced labour at Dachau, along with many other "low points" along the way.
Charmatz's telling of his story is riveting not only because the scope of the horrors he witnessed first-hand represent the nadir of human evil, but because he relates his experiences with the eye of the award-winning journalist he later became.
The suffering portrayed is, at times, difficult to read. However, it MUST be read...to gain an understanding of the unimaginable evil that humans are capable of so that such horrors are never again perpetrated while the world sits idly by.
"Nightmares" should be mandatory reading in high schools.
