Book Description

Democrat James B. Hunt had a long career in politics, serving as governor of North Carolina from 1977 through 1985 and then again from 1993 through 2001. He not only exemplified the progressive tradition of earlier North Carolina governors, but transformed the tradition to embrace a concern for minorities, women's rights and consumer issues.

This biography of James B. Hunt begins with a discussion of the influence of his father, a hard-driving federal official who demanded much from his oldest son, his mother, a college-educated teacher who encouraged him to study and work hard, and his hometown of Rocky Ridge, where he developed his strong community ethic but had to deal with the town's support for racial segregation and tobacco. It chronicles his years at North Carolina State College, where he was student president for two terms, his transformation from a campaign volunteer for Terry Sanford to a political insider at both the state and national levels, and his close relationships with Sanford and his key adviser Bert Bennett. The author then discusses how Hunt, still unknown to most of the public, defeated candidates with more campaign money to become lieutenant governor of the state in 1972, and describes his first two successful campaigns for the governorship, and the actions he took and programs he implemented in his first term as governor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2004-12-08

Whether you are a history buff, a political junkie, or just have an interest in North Carolina, you will love this book. Tracing the life and career of Jim Hunt through turbulent times in this Bible Belt state, A North Carolina Progressive will give you hope and inspiration. This book reminds us that not everyone in NC was eatin' moon pies, burnin' crosses, and votin' for Jessie Helms. And, that taking the high road in politics does not have to mean losing the race. Careful readers will see a blueprint for the kind of candidate that will take back the White House in '08.

    Book Description

Over a decade ago, the publication of Divided Houses ushered in a new field of scholarship on gender and the Civil War. Following in its wake, Battle Scars showcases insights from award-winning historians as well as emerging scholars. This volume depicts the ways in which gender, race, nationalism, religion, literary culture, sexual mores, and even epidemiology underwent radical transformations from when Americans went to war in 1861 through Reconstruction. Examining the interplay among such phenomena as racial stereotypes, sexual violence, trauma, and notions of masculinity, Battle Scars represents the best new scholarship on men and women in the North and South and highlights how lives were transformed by this era of tumultuous change.

They have survived the carnage at Shiloh. But the war rages on. Nate returns to the family plantation to find it in ruins. In despair he turns back to the only life he knows -- the army. Meanwhile, Walt and Sunday re-enlist to fight for their beliefs, no matter how great the danger. The three young men meet again at the notorious Libby prison in Virginia: Nate as a guard, Sunday a slave and Walt a prisoner. Their grim reunion at Libby -- where prison walls divide them -- highlights the complexity of a war that tore a nation apart. In such a terrible place, can the three battle-scarred soldiers hope for anything more than survival?

The TRUE Story Of How One Teen Nearly Became The Biggest Mass Murderer Ever

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An uplifting and motivational true tale .......2004-08-10

Battle Scars is the autobiography of a man who, as a teenager, lived on the wrong side of the law, overwhelmed by his hatred to the extent that he nearly became a mass murderer, yet was stopped on the way to attacking his high school with an assault rifle. His success in turning around his life into something positive - he became an EMT credited with saving two lives, an expert on teen violence, and a husband a father - makes for an uplifting and motivational true tale that readers of all backgrounds can understand and learn from. Highly recommended.

          Book Description

The American public was totally unaware of the real events that took place during the Vietnam War. The media sometimes exaggerated the facts about the battles and missions. I feel sure that most of the fighting soldiers in Vietnam did not write home and give all the details about their daily lives in combat. Fear and guilt are two things that most people would not want to share with friends and loved ones. The names used in this book are fictional, and the dates and places may not be totally accurate. The events of the missions and battles have been preserved through memories and battle-scarred flashbacks. I pray that this book will open the eyes to the American people about the real Vietnam War and what the combat soldiers endured for them. Maybe today's children will look at the American flag with pride and appreciate its past warriors.

            Book Description

Battle Scars: Some Wounds Aren't Seen is a collection of poems written by a veteran as he struggles through post-war life. He deals with the daily conflict of receiving care from the Veteran's Administration and breaking through the plausible deniability of the Government, including the Department of Defense. The poems flow with the emotions of the poet—sometimes dark and morbid, light and enthusiastic, realistic, mythic. Writing these poems has granted therapy that the Veteran's Administration, in their confrontational perspective, was unable to grant. This therapy begins by putting pen to paper or flesh to keyboard and allowing the emotions to flow constructively into poetry. At this point it does not matter whether the poetry is “good” or not, it's purpose is to allow release. If others enjoy or find insight in your poetry, it is a bonus.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for the novice to intermediate knifemaker.......2007-01-11

If you are new to knife making and want to make your first knife you are better off buying either the $50 Knife Shop by Wayne Goddard or Custom Knifemaking - 10 Projects from a master craftsman by Tim McCreight (both of which I own) or, if you can get an edition with clear photos How to Make Knives by Richard Barney and Bob Loveless.
If you have some experience you will find some useful tips that may help you.
In 6 of the 7 sections of Blades Guide the editor has assumed a fairly high degree of knowledge, skill and expensive equipment for the projects that it overviews. I say overviews as I do not think a novice could use any of the sections except one (and I will come to that one later) as a manual to successfully complete the projects descibed. The projects are the construction of a tactical folder, the construction of a simple hunting knife, creation of pattern welded damascus, elementary sword smithing, installation of fancy screw fixed bolsters, forging a damascus tomahawk and blade grinding on a belt grinder.
While the sections are well illustrated with colour photos and the text is easy to follow, the only section that a novice could use is Wayne Goddard's section on the creation of a simple hunting knife and even then large bits of this text and photos are lifted straight from the $50 Knife Shop. The book does not have any real commentary on knife format and design, steel descriptions, classification and choosing the best steel for the job or sheathmaking or sharpening.

Simplify Your Life with Kids, first published in 1997, has sold over 250,000 copies. Here is the paperback edition of Elaine St. James's best-selling guide to making life with children easier, simpler, and happier.Everyone with children has experienced the frustrations of trying to juggle softball practice, PTA meetings, meals, laundry, and comforting a crying child with marriage, a hectic career, and what used to be a social life. It's a familiar challenge in many of today's harried households. In fact, in nearly three-quarters of American homes with children under eighteen both parents are employed full-time. Life can quickly get complicated.Simplicity expert Elaine St. James now has solutions for beleaguered parents everywhere. Simplify Your Life with Kids offers practical, down-to-earth advice for the vital, time-demanding, perplexing issues that all parents face; it promises to be an easy read for busy parents whose lives are so hectic they don't have the time or energy to wade through a heavy tome.Like St. James's previous simplicity books, Simplify Your Life with Kids will become the classic gift choice for anyone with kids, for anyone who's expecting kids, for older "boomer" parents, for parents of the currently developing "baby boomlet," and for everyone who knows anyone with kids.

5 out of 5 stars Best Organizational Book I've found for people with kids!.......2006-08-07

Organizing our lives are difficult enough, but adding kids to the equation makes it almost impossible! This book offers practical solutions and advice on how to get organized so you've got more time to do what's really important - spend with your kids! The chapters are short and the language is easy to read which is great for those of us who are sleep deprived or just short on time. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars A must have household guide for anyone with kids.......2006-05-29

This is a wonderful book. It has very short, 3-4 page "chapters" on differt topics. The book is broken into sensible sections on topics that anyone with kids struggles with (the workload, discipline strategies, etc.). It is very simple to read and you can skip to the section that applies or appeals to you that day. Plus, it's a really cute little book.

                                1 out of 5 stars Terribly Disappointing.......2004-01-26

I guess this book falls into the category of "never take parenting advice from someone who never had children". I bought this book because I LOVED "Simplify your life" by this author. I found it very helpful. This book, however, was mostly confounding and fairly depressing. While St. James *did* seek out advice from her friends who had children, these friends apparently take a very 'hands off' approach to their kids.

The book opens with a scenario in which a mother has forgotten to pick up her child and the child is stranded somewhere late in the evening while she tries to figure out a way to get someone else to go pick him up now that she's home and needs to make dinner. This did not bode well for the rest of the book [for those of us who don't routinely completely forget about our children and leave them alone in public places late at night....]

Much of the advice in this book falls into the category of "simplify your life with children by paying someone else to deal with the little brats". There is much about how parents should put their children in day care all day [and don't EVER let your child think they have the ability to cause you to delay your departure because of their pathetic tears, etc, etc, etc] and then get a sitter to care for the children in the evenings so mom can have "Me" time and parents can have "Us" time. Apparently, if you schedule 2 hours of "quality time" on Sunday afternoon with your kids, that's really all they need.

There was also a big push to teach the kids "self sufficiency" - as in, your 5 year old really can get his own breakfast so he doesn't "bother" you. I'm all for self sufficient kids and encouraging my children to be strong and independant, but too much of this book was geared towards forcing your kids to basically survive without any parental assistance or interaction - yeah... I guess that would be simplier than actually caring for your kids yourself. At least until they turn 13 and get put in jail for shooting up the school or something.

There were a few good ideas in this book, but not nearly enough to warrant wading through all the bad parenting advice and depressing disregard for children's well being. "Shelter for the Spirit" by Victoria Moran includes some great chapters on re-prioritizing and simplifying that are very child-friendly and would lead to strong parent-child relationships. In my opinion, parents would do better to read what Moran has to say and skip this particular book by St. James.

                                4 out of 5 stars Skim.......2003-11-07

It is probably most effective to read the first twenty pages or so and skim the rest. Not up to par with "Simplify Your Life", but the early parts still have some very good advice. The rest is also good, but can easily be condensed by skimming and reading paragraphs of interest.

1 out of 5 stars Annoying and Out-Of-Touch.......2002-06-16

I won't restate what has been said by other amazon reviewers of this book - this book was a waste of my time and money. I had so enjoyed St. James' original Simplify Your Life book and was looking forward to reading this book. However, page after page proved to be annoying and genearlly useless. This book IS NOT about simplifying your life. If I had know I was going to be reading a How To Raise Your Kids book, I would have picked one by someone who knew something about it.

On top of the other reviewers' comments that St. James' suggestions are too simplistic and sometimes even harmful, I would add that if I had the money to implement all of her "simple" suggestions, I would move out of the country and greatly simplify my life. Her suggestions to single parents to "buy used" and steer cleer of impulse purchases are patronizing and sorely out of touch. Further, her assumptions about "male" and "female" traits and roles are not relevant to the lives of anyone I know.

St. James should stick with material she knows.

The Battle of Bunker Hill and the burning of Charlestown were the first major battles of the American Revolution. Brendan Morrissey describes how the sparks at Lexington and Concord ignited the smouldering resentment of the Colonists into the flame of a rebellion. Colonist militia were pitted against British Redcoats in a series of struggles which led the British to evacuate Boston and to George Washington taking command of the fledgling American army. He looks at the forces involved: the regulars of the British Army, the Royal Navy and the American militia and 'minutemen'. The opposing commanders are also examined and the book is laid out in order to clearly show each of the phases in this early part of the American War of Independence: Lexington and Concord, Bunker/Breed's Hill and the American siege of British held Boston. Finally, the author investigates the reaction in Great Britain, Europe and America to the rebel success.

This book had great visuals, but the writing just did not flow. I love learning about the Revolutionary War, but found myself bored with what was written. The book was quite brief so even though some points were tedious, it was a quick read.

How can anyone not love the Osprey series of books?

Whenever I'm researching a military campaign or would just like to know a more about what happened historically, I turn to the Osprey series of publications. They are well organized, written, and illustrated and provide the reader with state-of-the art maps and graphics.

This particular volume provides the essentials on the Battles of Concord/Lexington and Breed's (Bunker Hill). Author Brendan Morrissey covers the following:

                                  - The Road to War (Colonial America and Colonial policies)
                                  - The Seat of War (Boston in 1775)
                                  - The Opposing Commanders
                                  - The Opposing Armies
                                  - Lexington and Concord (19 April 1775)
                                  - Breed's Hill (17 June 1775)
                                  - The Seige of Boston
                                  - Aftermath
                                  - The Battlefields Today
                                  - Chronology
                                  - A Guide to Further Reading
                                  - Wargaming the Boston Campaign

In short, this neat book contains everything anyone needs to know about the opening campaign of the Revolutionary War that set the stage for a British defeat eight years latter.

Hard to believe a Brit can write a good book on the American revolution but here it is.

Well organized and nicely written and also very balanced. A fun read. Maps are very good.

I bought this book at the Bunker Hill national monument recently, hoping it would fill in the gaps that David McCullough left out of his excellent 1776. Unfortunately, I finished the book only more desperate to find a book that not only solved my original dilemma but could also serve as an antidote to this one.

First, what the book is and what it is not. It is not a narrative of what took place in Boston in 1775. Instead, it is a sequential distillation of the military events of 1775 in and around Boston. To be fair, it is part of the Campaigns series so I should not fault it for not reaching for the same heights that McCullough did.

I would not have minded this approach, however, had the author been even remotely objective in his presentation of the known facts -- or perhaps even-handed, trading barbs against both sides. But, alas, Morrissey chooses to chide the colonists at every turn possible and to praise the redcoats for their forbearance and grace under pressure. It becomes laughable when page after page he continually defends the British taxes and the behavior of the British regulars while portraying the American leaders as having only profit motives for rebellion and the militia as misled rabble.

I am willing to hear of our own people's weaknesses: they are many. However, to fail to note that the other side was equally flawed in aspects of its approach grows wearisome after about page 10.

In sum, the book does have great maps and visuals -- the commentary on the etchings are first rate (except when they again accuse Americans of dealing unjustly with the British). I will keep the book on the shelf for reference, but will not recommend it.

Linder Sterling, long-time companion of Morrissey, has here collected all her photographs of the star in question, all ranging from the time with The Smiths to his solo career. The photographs display Morrissey in different moods, all ranging from his superficial superstar egocentrecity to his extremely introverted vunerable self. A great book for the fans, or just people studying photography.
