The brownie recipie is to die for!.......2004-03-19
I've made several recipes from this cookbook. Some have turned out to be my favorite recipes and I will continue to bake those recipes forever after. Some other recipes have not turned out so good but alot of that has to do with opinion. I don't believe that anybody could like every single recipe in any book. Odds are there will be recipes that just do not interest you. There is a drink section in this cookbook that I have no interest in and I have not even looked at the recipes. BUT there is an awesome brownie recipe that honestly is the best brownies I have ever eaten. (And I have made tons of different brownie recipes). The thing is - the recipe calls for a Ghirardelli chocolate powder that is a little different than regular cocoa so you kind of have to use that ingredient. Another awesome recipe is the English Toffee. Very easy and wonderful. It's a small book but it's attractive and the recipes are simple. It would make a great gift for a chocolate lover. I recommend it if you just want another book to add to your cookbook collection or if you specifically like Ghirardelli but if you want a bigger selection of chocolate dessert recipes then look elsewhere. It's limited.
A big disappointment.......2000-06-23
I really did expect more from Ghirardelli. I am an extremely experienced baker and I do all the baking every day for my café, but few of these recipes worked. A better bet would be Maida Heatter's Chocolate, or Nick Malgieri's.
Ghirardelli knows how to do chocolate! It is a must..........1997-06-11
My favorite recipe is the Crunchy Mud Pie. Out of this world flavor. I have only had rave reviews when I have made this for family and friends
Customer Reviews:
GHARARDELLI Original Chocolate Cookbook.......2000-05-11
This should be a "must have" for every chocoholic! The recipes are positively lucious, and it is easy to get the necessary Ghirardelli ingredients by phone, or online for those underprivileged who don't live near a Ghirardelli shop. CAUTION: Reading these recipes can definitely be fattening!
Book Description
America is experiencing a chocolate renaissance, and the epicenter is in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Ghirardelli has long been the standard-bearer for great chocolate. Domingo Ghirardelli first began making chocolate drinks for miners during the Gold Rush. In the more than 150 years since, the chocolatiers who have carried on the company's grand tradition have made Ghirardelli the leading premium manufacturer in the country. Growing consumer demand for higher-quality cacao and specialized chocolate products prompted the experts at Ghirardelli to revise this collection of classic cookies, bars, cakes, and drinks. The recipes range from simple sweets to show-stopping desserts, while a special section on hosting a chocolate party comes just in time for holiday baking and entertaining.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent...except.........2007-09-14
it doesn't contain glaze recipes of the finished pieces that are pictured in the book. that's the only complaint i have. it was given to me when i first started throwing and i've found myself going back to it even as i advance.
Really GREAT for beginners!.......2007-05-12
If I could only have one book on throwing pottery this would be it, hands down! I've gone through alot of books and found this one to be far and above the best for addressing all of the steps to easier learning and is presented in the most effective way. It is much more detailed than most of the other books. These details of advice and the cutaway photography make all the difference. Having this book as a supplement to my pottery teacher's instruction has been so beneficial. The book covered details that my teacher didn't think to give me and the cutaway photography gave me the visual tools that can't be demonstrated as easily in a live class. Having this book to refer back to often during the learning process continues to be of great value.
I did not received yet........2007-03-08
I am trying to complain about delaying of this book, but I cannot make anyone to answer my question.
pottery.......2006-08-10
This book is very helpful to the beginner. The photos are very clear and easy to understand.
Best Beginner's Book I've Seen.......2005-06-01
This is an outstanding guide for learning how to throw pots. What sets this book apart from other beginning guides are the photos demonstrating the techniques and the cutaways showing both what the form should look like when properly executed and what the common mistakes look like and why. Other highlights include the clarity of the text, the inclusion of multiple methods to achieve a particular goal (e.g. opening, lifting the wall, etc.), and step-by-step instructions for several projects. While I made reasonable progress in a beginning class, the illustrations in this book really clarified the concepts and resulted in immediate improvements in my technique. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Early on a September morning in 1998, David “Gypsy” Chain and eight fellow Earth First! activists went into the redwood forests of Scotia, California. Their loosely organized plan to protest the destruction caused by the logging industry almost immediately turned farcically tragic. A. E. Ammons, a logger for Pacific Lumber, confronted the group, threatening them in an obscenity-ridden diatribe: if they didn't leave "I'll make sure I got a tree comin' this way!" The group retreated, moving deeper into the wilderness. A short time later, just as they were attempting to confront the logger yet again, Gypsy was dead, crushed to death by a tree Ammons felled.
A GOOD FOREST FOR DYING traces the long history of bitter clashes between environmental concerns and economic interests in the American West and shows why these tensions came to a head in northern California in the 1990s. It tells the story of how Pacific Lumber, once an environmentally friendly, family-owned business, became part of a conglomerate whose business practices made it a ripe target for environmental activists. But A GOOD FOREST FOR DYING is also the story of Gypsy Chain, a troubled young man raised in a loving family. A social misfit in his small Texas hometown, he died in a faraway forest before he had a chance to come to terms with himself and his family. His mother never lost faith in her sometimes wayward, idealistic son. After his death, and helped by a team of shrewd, leftist lawyers, she mounted a fight for justice in the name of her son and the cause of saving the redwoods.
A balanced, highly readable examination of complex, emotionally charged issues, A GOOD FOREST FOR DYING will appeal to a wide audience. Its insights into the inner workings of the radical environmental movement and its dissection of corporate greed and misdeeds are reminiscent of such provocative exposés as A Civil Action and Erin Brockovich. The story of Gypsy’s strange odyssey and the disturbing circumstances of his death–seen primarily through the eyes of his mother–is as powerful and as moving as Jon Krakauer’s classic Into the Wild.

Amazing Life Lessons - A History Unfolds.......2004-05-07
Many of us live our lives without knowledge of what goes on around us. Truly I was unaware of the struggle to save California's old growth redwood forest until my son, David Nathan Chain died in that war. It is often referred to as the "Timber Wars". We all just assume that our magnificent old redwoods are protected. Many of us also assume that people with corporate power will make good decisions for the welfare of our communities. We live in a time that mandates our interest in what is takes place in our country. If we don't, what will we leave our children?
This book was a complex story to tell. It is documented history of actual events where the human side is exposed for it's good and it's bad. Pat Beach has my utmost respect for telling it from all sides and making it a brilliant piece of journalism.

Spiritual and Carnal Love.......2001-07-12
This early work by Francois Mauriac, the noted 20th-century French Catholic writer, foreshadows his later writings that deal with the conflict of spirit and flesh. The novel's "young man in chains" is a French student caught in a dilemma between his idealism, his longing for love, and his inability to break out of his self-imposed isolation and risk real involvement with other people. Written in the 1910s, this work to some extent reflects the young Mauriac who was attracted to Le Sillon, a vibrant social democratic Catholic youth movement that was eventually condemned by the Vatican for its efforts to root French Catholicism in the libertarian soil of the French Revolution. The character of the religious youth leader in the novel is modeled on Marc Sangnier, the leader of Sillon whose charismatic personality drew many young Catholics to his cause. Mauriac admired Sillon's idealism but experienced disillusionment with the movement's growing "cult of personality" around Sangnier.
Book Description
Chet Baker (1929-1988) was a star by the age of twenty-three, winner of all the jazz polls as singer as well as trumpeter. His early promise was frustrated by involvement with drugs, however, and by a popular shift in taste away from the Cool Jazz of the west coast. But, except for a brief period of inactivity, Chet continued to perform for over thirty years--increasingly overseas, and sometimes in poor condition--but always remaining faithful to his original, lyric style. Some of his finest recordings were made shortly before his death. Since then his reputation has recovered and continues to grow, thanks to his colorful life no less than his beautiful music.
Here, for the first time, is the complete story about Chet Baker, from his upbringing in Oklahoma, his introduction to jazz (and junk) in Los Angeles, his early success with the Mulligan Quartet--through the horrific years of addiction, muggings, endless wandering, and jail sentences on both sides of the Atlantic. In between we learn of Chet's marriages and his erratic behavior--but also about his fitful brilliance as a musician, and diffident charm as a man. The author, Jeroen de Valk, dispels persistent myths about Baker, making the case, for instance, that he continued to develop musically throughout his career, however chaotic the circumstances.
The book includes interviews with Chet himself as well as his wife Carol, his manager, and fellow musicians like Lee Konitz, Bud Shank, and Russ Freeman. It includes two up-to-date discographies: a select, narrative one devoted to Chet's best releases, and a complete catalog of his 200+ recordings, rated from one star (Chet's bad days) to five (Baker classics). The text is enhanced by over 40 photos of Baker and his associates.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book about Chet.......2007-06-06
Very Good biography. Concentrates mainly on Chet's wonderful music, and not on his drug abuse, etc. Extensive and descriptive discography included. I give it at least 5 Stars!
THE TRUTH, AS OPPOSED TO GAVIN'S FICTIONALIZED DIATRIBE!.......2004-09-28
The most crucial element in any non-fiction work is original research and an honest reporting of the results of such work, and that is exactly what Jeroen de Valk has done in his excellent biography of the legendary jazz genius Chet Baker. This fascinating and balanced picture of one of the greatest jazz artists of all time stands in stark contrast to the tragically flawed Gavin work, which has been decried by all but one of the Gavin interviewees as distorted, utterly false and omitting much of what was told to him in one-on-one encounters with musicians who had played with Chet, and with those knew him. It is telling that Interviews with some of Chet's closest friends were completed omitted
Thankfully, Mr. de Valk scrupulously investigates the life of his subject, and with great integrity, paints as complete a picture of Chet as possible, accurately recounting interviews with those who had known and had worked with the artist. Especially revealing is the transcript of Jeroen's meeting with Chet and Diane Vavra.
Since the most prevalent question in the minds of so many regarding the artist is what actually happened to cause the demise of Chet, the author begins with the end of Baker's life. This seems the logical approach. The myriad theories that have been put forth since that dark night in May of 1988 seem to be put to rest with de Valk's careful investigation of the circumstances revolving around Chet's death. Witness the author's going directly to the criminal inspector who covered the case to ascertain the facts,as an indication of his painstaking research, rather than repeating hearsay as has been done so often by others.
In addition to reporting with great integrity, Jeroen has included exhaustive and descriptive discographies providing something so extremely valuable to all of us who are purchasing Chet's cds --- ratings !!!
Mr. de Valk should be highly commended for this superbly researched and excellently written insight into one of the most gifted and most misunderstood jazz artists ever!
A good focus on the music aspect of Chet Baker.......2002-11-27
There are two types of biographies about Chet Baker: One type catagorizes Baker as a fantastic trumpet player who was partially responsible for the "cool jazz" sound, and the second type, a steadfast junkie who was completely over-rated as a trumpet player let alone a jazz musician.
This bio falls in the earlier catagory and rightfully so. Chet Baker played with such greats as Gerry Mulligan, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond and more. You don't get to sit in with geniuses if you can't play, and Chet Baker could play. What both biographies do agree upon is that Chet Baker was incredibly handsome, had innate talent for the horn, and had loads of opportunities to elevate himself both morally and historically but failed to do so out of selfishness towards his drug habit which ultimately played a part in his death.
As to the book addressing his herion habit: Though the book chronicles it very throughly, it focuses more on his music accomplishmnets and personality rather than his addiction. (Chet's happiest moment in life was buying a Jaguar and racing it around all day long. It's my belief that Chet had a textbook case of Attetion Deficit Disorder and was proably self medicating himself so he could focus.)
The book has wonderful time-lines in it for both his life and his albums. There are loads of interviews with those on the sidleines who witnessed both his greatness and not-so-greatness. The grammar could be criticized once in a while but it is a good read.
Thus, this book is not only a god bio, but a great reference as to Chet Baker's accomplishments and history he helped create
Read this, not Gavin.......2002-10-20
This is a well-meant and partly successful effort. De Valk likes or at least judges his subject with restraint. After reading James Gavin's depressing, bloated, and thoroughly jive claptrap (as detestable as the equally bogus "Let's Get Lost") this book was a welcome remedy. Not great, by any means, but it's terse and direct. His biography just 'gives us the facts, ma'am', and trusts our intellect to do the rest. De Valk's annoted bibliography also reveals a true jazz fan/scholar's desire to inform and share about Chet Baker the MUSICIAN.
He's nicer to the people in Baker's life, too.
Worthwhile.
another review from Boston Ma........2002-09-26
I found the book most helpful in learning about Chet Baker. Grateful for the reviews of the music, it steered me right to incredible finds. If it loses something in the translation to english, the information is there for those interested.

Powerful tale.......2007-06-21
This book is an important document. There are moments in which it is very painful to read. The number of Holocaust survivors is diminishing, I thank Mr. Gordon for writing down his memories so vividly. Mr. Gordon also says something very important: in spite of everything he suffered he does not hate the German people. Hatred is not part of his philosophy nor his approach to life. I believe this is the most important lesson from this book.
Super fantastic read, recommended for all students.......2005-11-20
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I'm not religious or Jewish, but this book tells it all about how humankind can succumb to the worst of circumstances and yet still find meaning in life to go on. This book is about how a Regime can take control of a continent overnight and about how war can create enemies of us all. I'm a 42 year old white female American who finally has an understanding of hatred in a way that I never did before. Everyone should read this book. I cried through the last chapters recognizing a young boy's freedom at last. It's a must read for all.
Difficult but important book.......2005-05-30
The cover of this book shows a child holding a wooden bowl and spoon, watching the sunrise over a concentration camp. The perspective of a child enduring and surviving the unfathomable degradation and killing of these camps is one of the many remarkable aspects of this book. Excerpts from his book can be viewed at: http://www.remember.org/harold/books.html
Such a Horrifying, Inspirational Book!.......2002-03-02
...
This has been one of the most inspirational books I've ever read...
I woke up..., seeing the sunrise and feeling very thankful for my life.
This story follows the true events of a horrific time in our world, when our fellow mankind were treated so inhumanly, during the World War 2. This book is about a young boy's personal experiences and views of staying in the Nazi Concentration Camps. That young boy grew up to be; the author of this book! The true story told in this book was horrifying and yet wonderful. I'll never forget the story of Harold's life and I want to share it with others. I can't express the sorrow, joy and hope I felt for this author and all who unwillingly had to take part in those devastating times. Thank God, he survived and shared his purpose with us. Mr. Gordon you have inspired me beyond words. Forgiveness, is such an easy word to say but not so easy to do. I wonder what justifiable, excuse I could ever come up with to not forgive those who've hurt me. I'm so happy that you have triumphed and have received such wonderful blessings in your life!
I still hadn't decided when my kids should read this book, but after reading some other reviews, I'll definitely have my teenager read it now and my other children when they are just a bit older.
I guess I was trying to protect them from reading a firsthand account of such atrocious acts. My youngest and oldest sons are the age span that Mr. Gordon was during his experience. As a mother I couldn't imagine my children going through that. I think they should read it and we'll all pray that this History will never repeat itself! Once again, this is a book I'll recommend and never forget!
I read on one of the reviews that Mr. Gordon is a speaker, does he still have speaking engagements? I live in the same area he lives, if he's still here. I would be very interested and appreciate any information about him.
a grandaughters view.......2000-03-14
I first read this book when I was in the fourth grade and was very surprised that it was my grandpa that went through all of the trials described. I could not put the book down until I had finished it. When I finally did, my whole perception of this horrible war had changed. It was hard to grasp that these horrible circumstances had surrounded my grandpa's childhood. This book and his wise teachings have taught me forgiveness, hope, and faith. This book is an alternate for The Diary of Anne Franke. You get a different view, not one of growing up in hiding but one of growing up in concentration camps.

Work of art.......2001-11-11
This is a story of epic proportion. It was an enjoyable read, it captivated my imagination. The Characters were colorful and real. The author provided many surprises, and I liked the symbolism of the rose. At times I found myself meditating on the rich symbolism. Some parts were very poetic. This story should appeal to the average reader who likes a good yarn.
eden's last sunrise.......2001-09-06
This is a wonderful story of love and hate, fate and destiny, sorrow and happiness. It involves the reader to think about their own life and beliefs. I first read this book two years ago when I borrowed it from the author, before it was published. I was greatly impressed with the content and composition, and encouraged him to have it published. Eden's Last Sunrise is a fictional account with true historical references. This book is sure to be a smash hit!

This is a wonderfully writen book. The action keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. While the action is intense there is more than sufficient character developement and plot twist to give the reader more than just an empty feeling from reading a thrashy romance novel.
The writing style Mr. Sebastian enploys, also gives the reader a wonderful visual feel for all of the exodic settings that the story weaves trough. A must read!!

Book Description
Ethan Vardaman was sixteen when his family moved to Chalaka, Alabama, in the deep South during the last decade of Jim Crow when racial strife was rampant. During these years of maturation, Ethan fell in love with Oui, a beautiful racially-mixed girl. After high school he left Alabama for college and medical school. Oui continued to work and go to nursing school before progressing to college and medical school. The two lovers had several chance encounters during these years, and each time their love would flare anew before being slammed back into reality. Finally in Vietnam a commitment was made, but tragedy ensued. The mule, that poignant picture of perseverance in the South is the portent throughout the story. This, the author's third novel, is written from the convictions of the author's experience. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Medical School and the neurosurgery residency of Vanderbilt University. After a naval career that included service in Vietnam aboard the hospital ship USS Repose and at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, he entered private practice in Norfolk, Virginia, and continued his teaching and research career as Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School and consultant for the Head and Spinal Cord Injury Study at the National Institutes of Health. Now retired in Chocowinity, North Carolina, his writing transcends the too often impersonal world of medicine with a graphic and verisimilar style while revealing the realism and compassion of a physician.

Mr Gordon.......2006-08-18
I personally know Mr. Gordon, it was he who sold me this book and signed it for me. Its truely sad how one can experience such a horrible time and still be a civilized individual.
He did charge me full price including taxes... !@#$%
My first biography.......2005-08-09
This book was so inspiring and real. I just read it in my middle school english class. The pain and enduring was very descriptive, and it's really sad to know that what you're reading actually happened. I'll definitly be reading more biographies and nonfictions in the future.
This is a book about the indomitable human spirit.......1998-12-06
This book should be required reading for everybody. It is the story of a child caught in the insanities of war, and experiencing man's inhumanity to man. This is the story of little boy Harold Gordon, who went through the Holocaust at age 10 and miraculously survived several concentration camps and incredible horrors. Torn from a very poor, but adequate life, he experienced starvation, freezing, violent deaths in the family and all other kids of indescribable cruelties. The book takes us along on an impossible journey of tragedy, cruelty, and finally, triumph of the indomitable human spirit. This book is not about despair, but one of overcoming and forgiving, and most importantly, of the incredible strengths we have inside. This is a book you won't be able to put down until you finish. It's a book that will move you to tears as you go through it, and will have you smile and cheer when you are finished.
