Book Description
A raw and vivid portrayal of life as an Untouchable. "I am the midwife here. I was born in the village of Velpakkam in Tamilnadu, and when I married, I came to Karani, my husband's village. I was still a child then. I am a farm worker and, like all my family, I am a serf, bonded to Karani's richest landowner. We are Pariahs. We live apart from the other castes; we eat beef; we play drums at funerals and weddings because only we can touch the cowhide; we work the land. My son Anbin corrects me when I say 'Pariah'; he says we should use the word 'Harijan'. Every day people from the political parties come to the village and tell us to demand higher wages, to fight the caste system. And they mean well. But how would we survive? We have no land, not even a field." - Viramma. Viramma is an agricultural worker and mid-wife in Karani, a village near Pondicherry in southeast India. This extraordinary book is the story of her life, which she told, over ten years, to Josiane and Jean-Luc Racine. Her story is both fascinating and moving. She describes her brief, happy childhood; the ordeal of leaving her village to live with her husband when she had just reached puberty and their subsequently loving marriage: her experiences as the mother of twelve children, nine of whom have died; the oral culture of her community and the interplay between different castes; the divine forces which influence her and the effects of modernization, which are becoming increasingly apparent. Threaded through the personal stories she tells is her sense of profound change, a constant dialogue between the old certainties of the caste system and institutional and political initiatives to improve the lives of her people. Officially Viramma is a Harijan, a member of the "scheduled castes." To emancipationists, she is one of the "dalits," the oppressed. But in her village, she is still what she has always been: an "untouchable," a "Pariah." Taking its place alongside the immensely successful I, Rigoberta Menchu, Viramma: A Pariah's Life is a rare and important publication: the vivid portrayal of a proud and expressive woman living at the margins of society.

a MUST READ for any investor!.......1998-08-24
What drives stock markets? Earnings. Can you look at current earnings to predict future price changes? No, current earnings are already reflected in the stock price. You must look at the estimates of future earnings in order to predict price changes. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who invests as it covers every seminal article written on the subject of using earnings estimates. Brian Bruce, who hosts an annual conference on the subject, is a leader in the field and has chosen the best of the best articles.

Book Description
The thousands of examples displayed in the book include unmarked silver jewelry pieces as well as those produced by approximately 100 U.S. manufacturers and that of over 150 foreign manufacturers, along with their trademarks and national silver standard marks, and in most cases, supplemented by brief histories and biographies of the major manufacturers and designers. The book covers the jewelry of about 30 countries and is organized according to the geographical areas where the silver jewelry was manufactured, and the manufacturers and silversmiths are listed alphabetically for easy access and reference. Approximately 950 photos; several hundred marks and trademarks. 2001 values. REVIEW: This book displays and prices a broad range of silver jewelry, reflecting the breadth of the collectible market and emphasizing the kind of silver jewelry which the average dealer/collector is most likely to encounter in the marketplace. The range covers a broad spectrum, from cheap to expensive, rare to common, U.S. and Continental to Middle Eastern Oriental.
Customer Reviews:
the definitive silver jewelry guide.......2007-07-19
I haven't found another book that covers what this one covers. It is well organized and has lots of good photos. There are written commentaries about the various manufacturers of silver jewelry, discussions about mid century artisans, and great information about silver jewelry from Scandinavia, Mexico and other places in the world. There are additional resources in the back of the book and lots of information about hallmarks as well. I can go on and on but take it from me, this is the best book out there on silver jewelry.
Great book on silver jewelry.......2007-03-22
This book has been fabulous because it includes a broad span of silver jewelry, not just one specific type. It has helped me identify many pieces. Great pictures, great explanations. Includes many different marks. I love it and use it all the time.
Excellent, well-illustrated, authoritative.......2006-12-18
Whether you are an expert collector or a neophyte, you will find this book a valuable reference source. It is illustrated in full-color and covers the range of silver jewelry makers exhaustively, maker by maker, including illustrations of makers' marks.
A Sweeping, Successful Overview of Collectible Silver Jewelry.......2006-02-08
I was very happy with this book. I have been collecting for 22 years. I have been a vintage jewelry dealer for just a few years. This is the book I open the most when buying, researching and selling anything silver. Organized by geographic origin, each chapter gives you a rich overview of styles, eras, hallmarks, makers' marks, quality, estimated value and more... Love this book.
Terrific resource!.......2005-08-28
I was looking for a book to help with identifying Mexican jewelry marks. This book went beyond just Mexican silver on to US, Scandanavian, British and other types of silver. It was exactly what I was looking for.
Customer Reviews:
Poor photos.......2006-02-22
While this book might be of some use to an antiques dealer, the photos are much to small and of to poor a quality to be of any use to a student of jewelry. I was very disappointed.
Could have been better.......2003-05-12
I think that this author had a lot of good information, but needed better help from an editor in organizing and presenting it.
The first section is disorganized and hard to follow. It was intended to cover the "inspirational forces" for Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewelry (people, places, ideas, and events) but the way it was presented made the information not very valuable, at least to me.
One thing I learned---while I knew that "nouveau" meant new, I learned that "deco" meant "young.
Section 2 had some wonderful color plates of pieces of jewelry and the third section had lists of designs, motifs, and materials for "new art" jewelry.
Section 4 had "thumbnail sketches" of jewelers, jewelry designers/makers, manufacturers and retailers.
The last section was an interesting glossary of jewelry terms and types. I especially enjoyed the information about hallmarks, enamel, combs, hatpins, and purses (mesh and beaded).
Complete,Concise, Comprehensive Guide.......2000-04-20
Baker presents a definitive guide to Deco and Nouveau Jewelry. She outlines the historical influences on the designs, offers beautifully photographed and representative pieces and concludes with a glossary and price guide. Her format is logical and the placement of the price guide as an addendum allows periodic updates that keep the book current. Overall a helpful guide for the novice or experienced collector and a pleasurable book for simply viewing lovely jewelry pieces. The paperback format allows affordability.

Treasury of Smocking Designs.......2006-07-02
This product arrived in a timely fashion and is everything that it was promised to be.
Good for beginners!.......2000-05-11
I purchased this book to learn how to smock dresses for my daughter. The directions are both drawn out for you to see and then written out in easy to follow step by step instructions. The written directions are very good and go into detail as to what you are doing and explaining how stitches differ from each other. The patterns included are for beginners to advanced. The patterns are all in black and white print with writing as to what color to use when. (Some books are color coded with the color thread to use being the color that the line is printed in). If you are looking for decorative patterns this book has it. If you are looking for theme patterns (bunnies, holiday, letters) this does not have that.
Customer Reviews:
Good for flowers and ornamentals.......2003-04-16
Every page covers two plants each with a large photo on top. They present very compact information, consistently covering when flowers bloom, heights, wind, sun, watering, overwintering, which will help plan a full year graden.
Largely the book is about flowers and ornamentals. Only 12 herbs and 7 vegetables are covered and insufficently. FOr the vegetables I was interested in found terms/instructions used not in the glossary and descriptions that diagrams would have helped more on. BOUNTIFUL CONTAINER for growing edibles in containers was by far better for that topic.
Simply the Best!.......2003-03-02
I found information on overwintering plumbagos that I couldn't find any place else. Focused on containering, no raised beds, no plant biology. It's informative, and the pictures make it entertaining to read, as well. Easy to read picture symbols let you know right away which plants need sun, and which need shade, how much water they need, and how much light they need. In the front there are seasonal suggestions for combining plants and how to make their suggestions. Yes, roses and hydrangeas grow in a tub! There's information on how to make chemical-free potions for your plants to take care of fungal infections, aphids, and mildew. And for the brave, you can start your patio collection from seed...helpful instructions show how. I've done them and trust me, if I can do it, anybody can!
I can't say enough about this book. I consider this book my container garden bible, and has been very useful for me in creating a garden environment on my 7x10 apartment patio in the Oklahoma City area! This is simply the best book I've seen on container gardening.
Very Helpful Overwintering Reference Sections.......2001-01-04
This makes book 4 in a row in my quest to learn the wonders of container gardening, and it does a pretty good job. The first third of this work follows the lead of the previous, it shows the four seasons and a decent number of example containers along with the dimensions and what it would take at the nursery to put it together. The final two thirds though is where it shines, the author provides a compact encyclopedia of container plants arranged by scientific name. The plus here is that they include information for each and every one on overwintering. Starting my garden in November in Zone 8 I found this information extremely useful when picking out my next project. Overall a very good offering, especially for the reference information contained therein. For further reading, I suggest Hillier's book [for great ideas/examples], and David Joyce's for classification based on color.
Great Book!.......2000-04-24
This is absolutely the best book on container plants. There are so many plants that I would never think of planting in a pot, but Heitz will try anything. This book has been the greatest influence on my container garden (which you can see in Fine Gardening Magazine March/April 2000). Get this book if you are serious about container gardening.
Great resource for gardeners with small spaces!.......2000-02-04
This is an excellent book that I use constantly as a resource. Not only did it offer valuable tips about plant care and different appropriate plants for containers, it also had nice examples of container gardens for all seasons. I find the plant index in the back the most helpful. Recommended for beginners and those with apartment balconies or patios!

One of the strangest publishing mistakes I've seen.......2004-05-03
I was tempted by this book on the remainder table at my local Borders store. Since this is a German book (translated into English), I thought I'd better check the entries of plants I was familiar with to get some sense of the book's accuracy and usefulness to American gardeners. My initial impression was that it was okay, but not entirely accurate, based on personal experience and other reading, but the price was low and the pictures were pretty. Then I came across the "caterpillar" section ("caterpillar" substituted for Latin names; see previous review). As a former editor, I'm aware of how easy it is to publish errors, but this one takes the cake. The remainder price may be low enough that some people will put up with the infestation of "caterpillars," but I couldn't justify buying something with that extensive a problem, no matter how pretty the pictures are. Frankly, I think the remaindered books should be marked with a warning sticker--I'd have been pretty unhappy had I bought this book and then discovered the mistake once I got home.
Publishing error not in all copies.......2003-10-26
My copy of this book does not have the publishing error mentioned in the previous review - and I found this book to be quite useful in deciding what to plant for my patio garden.
Publishing error.......2002-06-26
I checked out a copy of "500 Essential Container Plants",
from my library. Once I looked at it at home I found that for the entire section "Plant for a single season" - about 100 pages - in the body of the text the Latin name of the plants is replaced by the word "caterpillars." My guess is that the publisher replaced the Latin names with caterpillars so the text would fit through his spell checker then forgot to go back and put back the Latin. I would guess that it is the same with all copies.

Book Description
Bringing new focus to the subject, THE INVISIBLE WEB investigates the family from a feminist perspective. Using the lens of gender, connections between mothers and daughters, fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, and husbands and wives are analyzed and given new meaning. The authors evaluate and redefine family transitions such as divorce, single-parent and female-headed households, and remarried couples who are attempting to integrate their respective children with ex-spouses and complicated networks of extended kin. They also reexamine traditional and emerging roles for women in their early, middle, and later years. Written in an engaging format, each chapter features an indepth analysis of how gender shapes the relationship in question. This discussion is followed by fascinating vignettes of actual cases from each of the four authors, whose approaches reflect different orientations to therapy.
Based on the work of the Women's Project in Family Therapy which won the 1986 AFTA Award for Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy, this groundbreaking work is an excellent text for courses in family therapy and women's studies, an invaluable guide for mental health practitioners, and an insightful read for anyone who wishes to explore the invisible web of gender patterns in families.
Customer Reviews:
Dated and disappointing, but good as a foundation.......2001-02-01
As a young family therapy student, I was very taken with this book because it clearly and consistently applies family therapy approaches (although mostly the structural, modernist kinds) through a feminist lens. The case studies were very helpful, especially the transcripts which helped me to envision what therapeutic dialogue might sound like.
However, some years have now passed, and a re-read of this book left me frustrated and irritated. The authors seem to have a very limited perspective on family gender roles, centered around a white, middle-class, heterosexist perspective. Many times authors speak in generalities about what "mothers and daughters" or "fathers and daughters" do in their relationships with one another, and I find myself writing notes in the margin: "says who?" "Not in my family!" etc.
This book is helpful for students if taken with a grain of salt and presented by an instructor versed in more postmodern techniques and multicultural critiques.

Lily Pons-Opera Arias
ASIN: 1574670476 |
Book Description
The popular opera star Lily Pons (1898-1976) was the reigning coloratura at the Metropolitan Opera from 1931 to 1959, and her career included several Hollywood films. She was as beautiful and charming as she was talented - a combination that made her a true celebrity. This collection brings together the impressions of colleagues, critics and scholars about this much-beloved diva, with more than 100 rare photographs from Lily Pons' own archives, largely owned by Ludecke and her family. HARDCOVER.
Customer Reviews:
excellent ribute to a great artist.......2000-09-26
Rather than a straight biography, this excellently compiled volume of writings and photos (many reproduced here for the first time) is an eloquent tribute to a truly great artist who graced the stage of the Metropolitan during the not-too-distant past when "the Met" really did hold the standard of greatness. One very amusing photo taken in Pons' dressing room shows her entertaining a group of young students, one of which is an enthralled Bernie Schwartz (later known as Tony Curtis). Highly recommended.

In Memory of Pierre Seel (1923-2005).......2005-12-23
Pierre Seel, Outspoken Gay Concentration
Camp Survivor, Dies in France at Age 82
The Mémorial de la Déportation Homosexuelle, the French national group that commemorates the homosexual victims of the Nazis, has announced the death of Pierre Seel on Nov. 25, 2005, at age 82 in Toulouse, France. Mr. Seel was recognized internationally for his book, I, Pierre Seel, Deported Homosexual: A Memoir of Nazi Terror, released in French in 1994 and subsequently published in English, German and Spanish.
Mr. Seel was noted as the most outspoken of the gay survivors of Nazi persecution. Of some 200 men from the French region of Alsace-Lorraine sent to the concentration camps as homosexuals, he was the only one to recount his experience publicly.
His deeply moving book describes his suffering at the hands of the Nazis, his anguish in the decades after the war, and his ultimate emergence in old age as a dauntless activist demanding public and official acknowledgment for the forgotten homosexual victims of the Nazi regime.
As he recounts in I, Pierre Seel, Deported Homosexual, Mr. Seel was seized by the Nazis in 1941, at the age of 17, in his boyhood town of Mulhouse in Alsace because his name appeared on a list of suspected homosexuals complied by the local French police; the Nazis had invaded Alsace and annexed the territory in 1940, declaring it to be part of Germany and imposing Paragraph 175, the German law forbidding male homosexual behavior.
Mr. Seel was violently tortured by the SS, then sent to the Schirmeck-Vorbrück concentration camp. After six months of severe privation and brutality, Mr. Seel was released, only to be drafted into the German army and sent to the Russian Front.
Following the Second World War, Mr. Seel returned to France. As with many homosexuals at the time, he married and founded a family. For nearly four decades, he remained painfully silent about his experience under the Nazis. In 1982, with his children grown and with the French gay liberation movement well under way, Mr. Seel broke his silence. He spent the rest of his life calling for recognition for the victims of the Nazis' antihomosexual policies.
Historians estimate that the Nazi regime sent a total of 5,000 to 15,000 men from Germany and the annexed territories to concentration camps specifically on charges of homosexuality; the majority of those men perished before the liberation of the camps in 1945. With the death of Mr. Seel, only a handful of homosexual former internees are known to be alive anywhere in the world.
I, Pierre Seel, Deported Homosexual, is one of only two book-length memoirs by homosexual survivors of Nazi persecution. (The other is The Men With the Pink Triangle, in which journalist Hans Neumann writing under the pseudonym Heinz Heger tells the story of Austrian survivor Josef Kohout).
Mr. Seel's book remains a vital primary source for all those interested in understanding the history of the darkest period of the 20th century. For further testimony from Pierre Seel, see his appearance in the documentary film Paragraph 175 (Telling Pictures, 2000).

A very moving book that needs to be read widely........2000-03-08
Pierre Seel's memoirs of being detained in a Nazi concentration camp because he was homosexual is a powerfull and well documented treatise on what happend to gays during the Nazi regime. I'd give it five stars except that the last half of the book focuses on the trouble he faced as a gay man in post-war France in trying to gain compensation from the government for his experience, something other camp survivors received. Maybe that's the editor in me. That information is important to the book, but Seel failed in my view to give that portion of the book the same power he gave to the first two-thirds. Either way, this is a book people need to read. It adds to the evidence to show that the tripe others publish in an attempt to show that gays and Nazis were somehow in bed together is nothing more than more reactionary rhetoric designed to work your emotions. Because if you examine the evidence, you soon find that such a treatise is severely lacking.
