A book that helps organize for life.......2006-11-24
My husband of 36 years asked for a divorce after informing me of a 3-week affair with a woman 4 years older who'd already had quadruple bypass surgery. Go figure! Shock doesn't come close to describing my state.
However, I was not so shocked that common sense didn't kick in -- two days later I ordered several books on Divorce, including Ms. Sember's: I needed to protect what I could for MY future.
The Divorce Organizer & Planner came in good stead. With tears here and there, I worked those sections that were relevant to me (I didn't need to consider child custody/support issues) and collected documents I would need to go through the divorce process. While I had a consultation with a lawyer to make sure I was collecting the info I'd need (and found out the Workbook was right on target!), I did not retain her right away -- nor did my husband seek legal advice.
4 months after "the news," my husband was killed in a freak accident.
Because I'd "done my homework" with the assistance of the Organizer & Planner, I had all the documents and papers necessary to handle the financial and legal affairs that accompany a death: Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, and Drivers Licenses for BOTH of us, Marriage Certificate, Life Insurance policies, Financial accounts, Lists of assets and liabilities, etc., etc., etc. I was able to obtain benefits, complete probate, and process life insurance claims forthrightly because all the information was readily at hand.
Ms. Sember's book is really a must have for everyone, those contemplating a divorce or not. I really should make it a point to write her a letter and let her know how very helpful she was at a very difficult time in my life.
Great book about understanding divorce!.......2005-11-26
I never thought I'd be in this situation. Divorce is one of those things that happens to other people. With all the emotions surrounding this life changing event, I found it hard to concentrate on the legal and financial aspects of divorce - until I found this book.
As I read it, I felt like the author was taking me step-by-step through the entire process from getting my records and banking information organized right up through changing my last name and rewriting my will. Everything was covered in an easy to understand language. The worksheets, checklists and logs inside the book were very helpful.
The suggestions, inside tips and strategies offered for court appearances and settlement options are comprehensive.
This book has been by my side and used as a reference throughout my divorce. Ms. Sember has helped me to organize all the paperwork and to better understand the process of divorce. Thank you!!!
Nifty Guide in a Difficult Time.......2004-10-09
Brette McWhorter Sember's "Divorce Organizer Planner" is quite the useful guide. Not only has she filled it with many helpful forms, she has sprinkled tips throughout the guide's 17 chapters.
Readers can read the book front to back, or skip to particular sections they need, be they protection issues, settlement options, custody matters, or even how to get the divorce rolling. The appendix, too, offers helpful information. There, Sember lists more than 30 websites, as well as a full reading list for adults and children.
I particularly think Sember's tip of only venting to friends and family, not a lawyer, is a gentle reminder that divorce is, as far as the law is concerned, a business transaction. To deal with the emotional aspects of divorce, Sember wisely directs readers to consider mediation, which has a high chance of producing the best long-term results.
Nuts & Bolts Advice for the Divorcing.......2004-09-26
Divorce ranks as one of the most stressful events you can go through in a lifetime, even when it's fairly amicable, and many aren't. Even though your emotions are in turmoil, you have to be as objective as possible when going through a divorce to ensure that you (and your kids, if you have any) get a fair deal.
Brette McWhorter Sember's book not only goes over every aspect involved in divorce, but provides practical, useful worksheets to help you stay organized. She provides tips on gathering, organizing and analyzing financial, household and personal documents and walks you through the divorce process. The book lays out the different options for working with lawyers, mediators and what happens in court.
Anyone involved in a divorce would do well to order this book as soon as the decision is made to divorce.
A Complete Organization Tool.......2004-09-25
It's hard to go through a divorce - divorces are often rated as one of the top ten life stressors. Brette Sember's book helps make getting through a difficult life event easier. While you will still have to deal with the emotional turmoil, following the steps in Sember's book will help you with all the practical things you need to do to get through your divorce proceedings. Getting organized not only reduces your stress level, but as Sember points out, it will help you minimize your legal costs.
The book, written in Sember's practical, me-to-you style, takes you through the stages of divorce, and provides helpful lists and worksheets to help you organize the volumes of information you must deal with. She covers the major things like finances, property and child support and alimony, but also provides tips on little things, like talking with your lawyer's secretary.
All in all, this is an extremely practical guide that will help anyone going through a divorce. It's hard to think about all the details during such a stressful time, and Sember's book is an extremely good solution for keeping on top of all the information you will need for your divorce proceedings.

Sadly Lacking.......2007-07-27
A veritable stream of meaningless gibberish masquerading as fount of knowledge, this book is the benchmark in specious academicism. With his bias firmly planted in the Caucusus, the author skips merrily past the last century of rug design, and completely dismisses Turkish curvilinear rugs altogether. This book is trumpeted in the industry as being the first and last word on the subject. In my estimation, it is the clarion call for a more gifted author to prepare an unbiased, unpretentious, and well-researched book on the subject. If you've read Ford's "Oriental Carpet Design" then you know that the call has already been heeded.
Oriental Carpets: A Complete Guide - The Classic Reference.......2007-03-29
Bought for myself as a tool to help teach myself about Persian rugs, this book is so wonderful I gave it as a housewarming present to a friend of mine, freshly divorced who is decorating his new house. Perfect! The authors, the Murray Eilands Jr. and III, a father and son team, are experts in their field. The father, a practicing psychiatrist in California, has been studying and collecting Oriental rugs for almost 40 years, and his son has a doctorate from Oxford in Near Eastern archeology (including textile development), so you would be learning from very special, knowledgeable accomplished folks who love their textiles and rugs. I recommend this book highly.
My best reference book on rugs.......2007-03-26
Easy to use and I think a must for anyone seriously wishing to acquire a sound knowlege of oriental rugs whatever his or her aims. Delighted with the clear and elegant text. Good image collection too.
Disappointing.......2007-01-22
This is a beautiful book, but the coverage is overwhelmingly for geometric oriental rugs, with a large section added for Chinese. I was looking for the more ornate styles (Heriz, Tabriz, Sultanabad, and so on) that are so very beautiful. These are grossly underrepresented in this book, if at all (e.g., most are not). I am sorry I purchased the book.
Oriental Carpets: A Complete Guide.......2007-01-03
This book is all you want to know about oriental carpets. The writing is energetic and not too pedantic. The illustrations are top notch. With it's help I was able to track down my recently acquired Caucasian to Perepedil. I had been told it was from Ardabil in Iran when in fact it is from Azerbajian near Kuba. A dear friend's carpet was finally identified as an American hand painted Sarouk. It was a hand me down and it's origins were a mystery for 50 years. It is a very heavy book but if I was to go to Turkey for additional purchases I would not hesitate to bring it along.

The Forest Nursery Manual - a joint effort between the Department of Forest Science, Oregon State University, and the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Division of State and Private Forestry - presents state-of-the art information about current bareroot-nursery practices and research. The Manual emphasizes all stages of seeding production from nursery-site selection throught outplanting. Twenty-one bareroot nurseries and eight seed-processing plants were surveyed with two in-depth questionnaires and the survey results interpreted and incorporated into chapters written by leading scientists and practicing nursery managers. Over 250 people previewed the Manual at the Bareroot Nursery Technology Workshop, held at Oregon State University in October 1982. The growing size and sophistication of the bareroot-nursery industry underscores the pressing need for an up-to-date synthesis such as this.

Vivian Stanshall, pure genius, deserves so much more.......2005-10-28
I gave this book four stars because there aren't any others to compare it to. Who said something like: lucky is the man or woman who attracts a gifted biographer? Vivian has yet to attract someone gifted, so until then, this pop bio by pop writers will have to do. I note the other reviewer laughed like mad. I can understand that. Vivian was a funny man. But this is about his life, and Stanshall's life wasn't funny at all. Nor was Lennon's or Keith Moon's. These two were close friends of Vivian, but getting the truth about their relationship with Vivian into a pop bio is asking too much of what is basically a skim over a deep man's deep life. No one who wrote the lyrics Vivian wrote (especially in his rare, brilliant, tragic, and terribly strange Men Opening Umbrellas Ahead) was a jokester, or a comedian. Vivian was a rennaissance man living in a time of style without substance. He railed against his contemporaries and he wailed about the pain of human existance. I bought this book just to have it. But I wish, dear god, I wish a "real" biographer would come along to do justice to this towering unfulfilled talent.
Brilliant! Laugh Out Loud and Cry!.......2005-02-17
This is a strange and weird yet hilarious book about the lead singer of the greatest 60's/70's band (besides the Beatles and Pink Floyd) that ever blared a note. Ladies and gentlement, it's Vivian Stanshall of the Bonzo Dog Dooh-Dah Band. I literally laughed out loud a number of times while reading this book, which I rarely do. (It's ultimately a tragic bio, with the hero descending into the usual hell of drugs and alcohol! Almost a cliche' ending. Why didn't so many members of the 60's love generation do a better job of managing the latter half of their lives?) My only beef with this book is that the author got lazy researching the material covering the Bonzos relationship with the Beatles. In the book it is mentioned that Vivan Stanshall said that he helped the Beatles write some of their songs. Which ones? (My guess is Lucy in the Sky--but who really knows?) There are also no descriptions of what happened when Lennon met Vivian Stanshall! That kind of omission is unforgivable. In the Magical Mystery Tour movie, John, George and the Bonzos are in a strip club. John and George are drinking. John looks slightly demented and crazed. What happened off camera? There's got to be a fantastic story there. In that recent bio of Jim Morrison the same thing happens. We learn that Jim visited the Beatles during one of their recording sessions? So what happened? Who said what? Was it a mutual admiration love-fest? Did they sit and smoke a Jazz-herbal cigarette and play "The End" together? It's criminal not to give out any details. Anyway. This book is still great! And if you've never heard the Bonzos, buy a double CD called, "The History of the Bonzos" and you will be very, very happy.

Half a million citizens fled Germany and Austria between 1933 and 1945; of these, nearly 132,000 came to the United States. Among them were writers such as Thomas Mann and Alfred Döblin, scholars such as Hannah Arendt and Peter Gay, politicians such as Ernst Toller and Alice Salomon, scientists such as Albert Einstein and Elisabeth Freund, and thousands of ordinary citizens from all walks of life. This useful volume gathers some of their accounts of the perilous flight from Europe, documents their resistance to the Nazi regime, and recounts their impressions of America. Among the writings Anderson reproduces is an impassioned letter by Einstein, Arturo Toscanini, and others to President Franklin Roosevelt protesting these new immigrants being categorized as "aliens of enemy nationality," asking instead that they be recognized as "staunch and consistent defenders of democracy." Some of the men and women who figure in this book returned to Europe after the war. Many others remained; as political scientist Henry Pachter remarks in an essay included here, "Perhaps we can be better Europeans in the United States than anywhere in Europe." --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
A 1998 Los Angeles Times Book of the Year: the "vivid and moving" (Los Angeles Times Book Review) composite portrait of the historic migration of German-speaking refugees from Hitler. Hitler's Exiles is at once a moving human document and a new classic of the literature of exile. Hailed by David Rieff as "fascinating, important, and heart-rending," Hitler's Exiles features nearly fifty first-person accounts of the flight from Hitler's Germany to America, many published for the first time. From forgotten archives and obscure published sources, Hitler's Exiles recaptures the unknown voices of that perilous time by focusing on the ordinary people who underwent a most extraordinary voyage. Anderson also includes little-known writings by such major figures as Thomas Mann, Hannah Arendt, and Bertolt Brecht. A new preface written for this paperback edition discusses the outpouring of emotion and memory the book has generated, and includes several moving letters from relatives of those in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Stories.......2005-04-05
Though I am still reading the book, I had to write this review as I enjoyed it very much - so much so that I did not go for my daily evening stroll. This book may be considered a compilation of stories by Jewish Germans waiting to emigrate from their( no longer) Nazi fatherland. Coming from a developing country the stories seems so modern. Germany seems to be such an advanced country but with a soul of a devil. I don't think things have improved much, I do remember having a bad time when I visited Germany in 1979 as a child ( not that the situation was good in Moscow, where I was based, or in UK). Xenophobia also exists in India and we must try to rise above such petty matters though sometimes it make life more interesting ( if you are not the victim). Well enjoy this book in your cosy bedroom and shed few crocodile tears for those long dead persons!
Vivid portraits.......2000-04-24
This is an excellent set of personal reminiscences from some of the Jews who escaped Nazi Germany from the early 1930s up to beginning of the 1940s. The stories are so incredibly vivid. What really struck me was the incredible difficulties they faced - the perverse Nazi bureaucracy, friends who turned their back, the loss of both material goods and the psychological loss of family and friends in Germany, and what happened when they fled Europe . This book doesn't stop at the end of the WW2 - it examines the impact of exile, and the cost of making new lives in countries when all you escaped with was your life. Any person interested in background reading on WW2, and a vivid picture of what it was really like for the Jews, would find this a worthwhile book.
