Book Description
An Irish Catholic Democrat from Chicago, Edward Fitzsimons Dunne was one of the most consistent champions of the humane liberalism known as progressivism that dominated American politics between the 1890s and the 1920s. A close political associate of William Jennings Bryan, Clarence Darrow, Jane Addams, and Raymond Robins, Dunne has been labeled Chicago’s first truly reformist mayor and Illinois’s most progressive governor. At his death, political insiders compared his role in Illinois to that of Woodrow Wilson on the national scene.
As chief executive of Illinois from 1913 to 1917, Dunne supported a variety of progressive reforms with far-reaching effects. He favored woman suffrage, argued for expanded state responsibility for overseeing workmen’s compensation and teachers’ pensions, and initiated large-scale improvements in the state’s roads. He also supported the creation of several regulatory boards and commissions, including the Public Utility Commission, the Efficiency and Economy Commission, and the Legislative Reference Bureau. More or less independently of the legislature, Dunne encouraged major reforms in the operation of state prisons and juvenile facilities.
Dunne’s contribution to progressivism in Illinois, of course, was not limited to his term as governor. In a public career that began with his election as a Cook County circuit court judge in 1892, he always advocated progressive change. As an elected public official, particularly as the mayor of Chicago, Dunne played a unique role in bringing into government the direct influence of Chicago’s social activists. Richard Allen Morton’s political biography, therefore, not only highlights Dunne but also illuminates the political dynamics of progressive Illinois.
Although many did not share his goal of an expanded governmental role, Dunne was the one person acceptable to reformers and conventional politicians alike when the old political order was eclipsed by demands for reform. And he was acceptable at least in part, Morton demonstrates, because he was a humble man without the messianic or demagogic tendencies of many reformist leaders of his day.
"In part because of the nature of the sources," Morton explains in the preface to this book, "but also because the daily operation of politics is often as significant as the results, this study seeks to provide a close, chronological account. It also deliberately emphasizes the importance of leadership in the shaping of events and public policy. Similarly, it consciously eschews any efforts to portray Dunne and his contemporaries as abstractions or as pawns of irresistible social and political trends." Thus, Morton is able to bring to life an actual person operating in the real world of politics, to portray a human being who made an enduring contribution to justice and humanity.

Brilliant is too limited........2004-06-29
Unquestionably the best book I have ever read, or will read, in my entire life!
Dynamic history at its best!.......2000-01-18
I bought this book as part of my research for my master's thesis on Midwestern progressivism. I expected the usual rather dull factual account. Instead I was pleasantly surprised by the comprehensive research, highly readable prose, and the profundity of the interpretation. Moreover, I learned far more about the realities of politics and society during the progressive period than I have from far more celebrated works. This is good history, and like all good history it focuses upon the past and not the personal saws of the writer. A bit pricey, I have never regretted the purchase. If you are looking for dynamic history at its best, check this out!

Sad but inspirational.......2007-10-17
A friend recommended this book to me and I put off reading it for awhile because it seemed so sad. But it was one of the best books I've ever read. It was sad but also very inspirational. While reading the book, you almost feel like you know Marie and by the end of the book, you wish that you could have known her.
A Sad Portrait, but a Very Real One..........2004-11-10
This book touched the heart and moves the soul. The author does a remarkable job of bringing this unknown little bag lady to life and to our awareness. Her story is the story of so many lost souls in America's streets. This book inspires one to do more, reach more, and love more.
I remember Marie.......1998-05-05
I remember when Marie would come by the House on Wilson Ave (where Jesus People USA housed thier Missionaries). Often as Marie talked I wished she would go away, but at the same time I knew I wasn't really to busy to sit and litsen to a lonely lady who just wanted someone to talk to. She was a caring person, I remember when I was working the front desk one night, no visitors where allowed on the seniors floor (we had a seniors citizens program) after 8 p.m., but here she came in as she often did to visit, but today she wanted to take a bowl of soup up to one of the seniors that had a bad cold. Of course I had my orders and I explained to her the visiting hours, but she didn't like that answer - just then she seen the wife of one of the pastors "Oh Sister, Sister" she hollerd and explained what she wanted to do. Mrs. Williams said it was O. K. and as Marie grabed her basket and ran for the elevator, pulling her basket behind here, Mrs. Williams explained though Marie doesn't look it or didn't live there, she was one of us with free run of the house. She died a few months later. Now I know more about Marie's situation -- you will never look at the homeless the same once you get to know Marie.

Customer Reviews:
Good read for novices.......2006-11-04
books in the "collection of tips" genre tend to be at least a little superficial--the format doesn't lend itself to pithy exposition--but 501 Stock Market Tips reads well, like having a week's worth of lunch conversations with a more experienced investor who expresses himself well. You can argue with some of his viewpoints--Khan is very skeptical that novices can master market timing and admonishes them toward a strictly long-term value approach, but it's worth reading his accumulated experience on a wide range of subjects. Remarks on various matters such as PE ratios may be more to the point than some of what you might read in lengthier monographs. An individual investor with a day job could not possibly employ the idealized and extensive O'Neill/IBD-style stock screening regime he recommends, but one at least gets a comprehensive picture of the value selection process.
This book is a breeze to read (but could have been proofread better--there are many missing words and misspellings to interrupt your train of thought) and you might devour it in a weekend. Bon apetit!

Over 130 fully illustrated pages from Sears catalogs record what men, women, children wore throughout 1930s. 133 pages of black-and-white illustrations. Publisher's Note.
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous, immersive, beautifully put together!.......2007-05-16
If you want a comprehensive book that immerses you in the world of fashion from the thirties, this is the one. It is authentic and beautifully laid out and depicts numerous costume items from the thirties, though mostly focusing on women. The pictures depict everything from dresses to shoes, hats to gloves; the women's hairstyles, makeup, undergarments, and overall looks give the reader the most authentic possible view of fashion and the aesthetic ideals of the time. The catalogue also shows the prices and features descriptions that include fabric and color. There are some pictures of men's and children's fashions. This book is thorough and unbelievably beautiful. The whole series of Sears catalogue fashions by decade is amazing. I recommend them all!
Good overview for the price........2006-11-06
I have to agree with the other reviewers. Modern fashion tends to look "dumbed down". I've owned this book for some time and refer to it often. Not to copy, necessarily; but to find inspiration. There are clothes available that still look "classic". Many of the original Sears pictures were in color but are reproduced here in b&w. Many of the reproductions have an overly fuzzy look. I suppose that's why the book is only $15 instead of 2 or 3 times as much. The Schiffer Sears series has sharp color images but you pay twice as much. You could buy the original Sears catalogs on eBay (I have a few) for even more. Your choice. This book will give you a good overview of the fashion changes during the decade and you can take it from there. Also of note are the accessories. A New Deal/FDR watch! A Buck Rogers watch! This isn't camp, either, but back in the days when this was serious stuff. Highly recommended!
Blissful brousing.......2006-10-11
Purchased this book soon after it was published in a Baltimore art museum.
Modern Fashions and hairstyles today reveal absolute mediocrity. No style. No class. More to offend the eye than to please. Trousered females with short cropped hair and men whose hair is unkept wearing garments ill made. Swimsuits that leave nothing to the imagination worn by people who one just wishes were not visable because they keep themselvs as they do their awful cloths.
This book is a treat to the eye. Wonderful cloths that show modern apparel was not alawys the norm.
For the student of History this book is a valuable source of information on the cloths of the period, for which I purchased my copy. No scoloarly work but merely taken from the Sears catalogs of the time. Undergarments and accessories, shoes to hats, everything is shown here.
Saddle shoes $2.49 in 1939.......2006-10-01
I own four books in this 'Searies' (Twenties, Thirties, Forties, Fifties) and I cannot recommend them highly enough. They are jam-packed with a great mix of pictures in good proportion which show the morphing of fashions over the decade(s). Dominant are women's clothing (formal, casual, dresses, hats, coats, shoes, with some undergarments, sportswear, nightwear, swimwear). Then there are smatterings of accessories (handbags, watches, gloves, powder compacts, belts, jewelry). Also some menswear and a small amount of childrenswear. All clothing is being worn.
All pictures are black and white and have a certain (pleasant) level of graininess. What you get are the original pictures, prices and descriptions from the catalogs. There is only a very small amount of introductory material (just a one page 'Publisher's Note' for the Thirties).
Changes over the series:
The transition from drawings (all very good and realistic) to photos occurs in the Thirties.
The variety of accessories appearing in the Twenties is largely reduced by the later decades (Fifties almost exclusively clothing and hats with some shoes).
There's only one problem with these catalogs...you can't order the contents!
good info.......2006-09-13
This is another useful research book, like all the ones that I've seen in this series, it's a valuble source for pictures of middle class, everyday clothes. It has pictures of women's accessories and shows some men's and children's clothes, which many period fashion books tend to ignore. Highly practical book for theatrical costumers.

Sex: 'Children are wonderful. It don't take plenty, y'know, just a nice girl who don't take birth control. Sexual intercourse is a wonderful thing.' Politics: 'Government sometimes maybe not like what we have to say because we say it too... plain' Race: 'There should be no war between black and white. Customer Reviews:
A book in his own words.......2007-08-11
This is a great read. It's been years since I've owned it, and I'm glad to have once again run across it. Bob stood for something...for many things. He had ideals, he was real, he was an honest man, and all of that comes through when he speaks. True, these are the words of an entertainer, but if that's the highest label you put on him, you really miss out on who he was and what he has to offer. Some of his views, you may not agree with; but remember that he stood by them, that he didn't back down from them, and more importantly that he lived what he talked. This is a good read, because it's light. If you are reader, like myself, then you can appreciate a lighter read at times, and this will provide that. One more thing, Robert Nesta Marley was more than just a face on a t-shirt or a face on blunt wrappers, he was a man who really made a difference in the world, more than many of the politicians, that talk about change and about rights, Robert Nesta Marley was a man who genuinely cared about people, and when you read the words he spoke all that comes through.

Book Description
This is an account of one woman's Holocaust survival and painful postwar years spent forging an adult identity out of the splinters of a girlhood destroyed. Edith Bruck, the youngest daughter of a poor Jewish family, was separated from all but her sister when she was transported from Hungary to Auschwitz at age 12. Bruck survived three concentration camps in one year and recounts her experiences in spare, straightforward language that is all the more devastating for its directness. She chronicles her adjustment to life after the extermination camps and her disappointment in the racism, impatience, and hatred she continues to see around her-often from her own family. Her adult life takes her to Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany, and finally to Israel in search of a place where she will belong.
Customer Reviews:
An unforgettable book........2001-08-29
This is a horrifying personal account of a young girl's experience of the holocaust. She tells her story in direct and unadorned language, simply relating each experience as it occurred. We watch her childhood stripped from her and her belief in humanity almost broken. But Bruck observes her experiences with an acute and truthful eye - she speaks the unspeakable, revealing how under the worst human conditions, kindness and love so rarely shine through. We are faced with unpalatable truths about how close to the surface our savage natures lie. This book should be read for its uncompromising honesty, and the extraordinary story it tells.
