A mind is a wonderful thing to explore.......2007-08-13

I bought this book for only one of its chapters as research for a screenplay, but ended up reading the whole thing. It is fascinating and will give you an appreciation for your own (hopefully functioning) brain. Each story is complete in itself, so it would make for good commuting or bedtime reading.

The Man Who Wrote this book mistook his patients for hats.......2007-07-15

Dr. Sacks' collection of clinical tales is obviously outdated, however this is not its greatest flaw. All of these stories are indeed remarkable, and they speak to the mysterious nature of the human mind and of course to human resilience. It is incredibly fascinating to think how one's individual nature and function can change in response to a neurological change. Dr. Sacks attempts to introduce and involve the reader in his patients' lives, but unfortunately fails to do so. The reader only establishes a superficial connection with the "client," as Dr. Sacks treats his patients as if they were just scientific specimens. In particular, I had a problem with his language and judgment. In "The World of the Simple," he talks about a mentally retarded girl Rebecca..."one sees this with infants, one sees it with the senile, most poignantly, with the Rebeccas of this world" (186). Rebeccas of this world? I was under the impression that he wrote this book to present the individuality and uniqueness of his patients? He simply calls her "mentally defective" (185). In talking about his Autist Artist, Dr. Sacks concludes that Jose will just "do nothing, and spend a useless, fruitless life, as so many other autistic people do, overlooked, unconsidered, in the back ward of a state hospital." I completely agree that people suffering from autism should be given a chance in the workplace, to be offered opportunities to live a real life. However, I do not agree that it is up to Dr. Sacks to decide and declare Jose's life fruitless if he does not work lives up to his social value. Aside from Dr. Sacks' extremely pretentious tone, he does attempt to explore the inner life and conflict of his patients in an interesting way.

Fascinating.......2007-04-18

Each mind described in this book is completely enthralling. You're left wanting to hear more - wondering how Dr. Sacks could hold back from experiments and asking question after question. On the contrary, Dr. Sacks treats all these patients with a high degree of respect and patience. I'm still pondering some of the questions raised in the book - interesting enough, the one that I most remember is the question about our soul...

This is a very good book, though now a bit dated, but an expert on rum who also runs the Ministry of Rum website. The only problem with this book is not what it contains, but that there are a lot more rums out there. I hope he publishes an updated version soon. The anecdotes about visiting the various factories and locations is wonderful. Really makes the book come alive.

If you want to see photos of figurines, get the guide. If you want accuracy and information about the pieces get another guide.

1. There are pieces included in the guide that were never produced.
2. There are a lot of mark errors throughout the guide.
3. Basic PM information in the guide is completely wrong which lends you to believe that the authors are definitely not PM collectors.

I'm glad to finally have a book to use as a guide to how much my collection is worth. However, I felt I couldn't give it 5 stars because the book is incomplete. I have pieces in my collection that aren't even listed in this book. I enjoyed reading the information about the creators and the inspiration for some of the pieces.

Precious Moments Collector's Guide.......2007-02-20

Terrific book with each figurine in color. One reason for not giving it 5 stars is the way the book is set up. The figurines are placed in figurine mold number order. It would have been better to place them in categories such as regular Precious Moments, Baby, Wedding/ Anniversary, Nativity and Mini Nativity, Club pieces and Ornaments. It would enable finding your pieces much faster than using the mold number.

Finally a new edition!.......2007-02-12

It was great to finally come across a new Precious Moments price guide. The layout was very easy to follow and the indexes a huge help. There were some different price variations from the last Greenbook edition (1999), which this book showed a lower value than 1999. I did not give 5 stars because there were markings on my collection of older pieces that were not listed in the book. All in all, every Precious Moments collector should have a copy of this edition!

This book as some good information but a lot of misinformation regarding dates of release/retirement/status. The pictures are pretty fuzzy so don't count on detail. A lot of the information was copied directly from the old Greenbook and Rosie Well's price guides. No original thoughts contained in this guide. Where did those Secondary Market prices come from? Little research and a lot of regurgitation involved here. Look for another guide.

I would have to say that this book is a good tool for the beggining sculptor. The book is informative as well as easy to follow. Most of the questions and doubts that I had were answered as I read from project to project. The book is not too overwhelming but rather simple and to the point. The book starts with a good section on selecting and caring for tools. Then briskly moves on to the wood needed and follows through to the projects in the book. Overall, I was pleased with the information gained from this book.

This book covers the use of native and other well-suited plant choices to match your local conditions and create beautiful, generally lower-maintenance, informal gardens. Beautiful photographs, tips for various cultural types (e.g., meadow gardens, shrub borders, woodland edges) and design theory, with a moderate emphasis on the temperate conditions one might find in England or New England. This book has no section arranged by species, but that's no loss for most garden readers, and Hobhouse shows a detailed knowledge of plants and gives plenty of tips on their specific use within the culturally arranged sections. (Hobhouse has a large number of books in print and out; all that I have read have been worth purchasing.)

Wonderfully informative.......2001-05-20

I've long been an admirer of Rosemary Hobhouse's garden design skills, but she displays here that she isn't only a writer who designs gardens, she is also an excellent plantswoman, and her gardens reflect an intimate knowledge and practical experience with all kinds of plants. This book is wonderfully informative on the history of using 'natural' plants in garden design, and I especially liked the way she uses various examples of real gardens of very different kinds. Whatever kind of garden you are interested in, there's bound to be something inspirational in this beautiful book.

Poignant And Lyrical.......2005-09-06

Carol Montparker's long experience as a pianist, writer and teacher shine through these poignant, often humorous stories of a life in music. Whether dodging the unwanted attentions of a classical superstar or consulting fellow musicians on the ethics of changing Mozart's notes, she reveals with touching humanity the hurdles that an artist -- particularly a female artist -- must leap in order to survive. Her writing is warm and generous. As the editor of a piano magazine, I have been delighted to publish her musings from time to time. I recommend them to anyone who wants to have a friendly guide "backstage" and behind the scenes in the world of classical music.

Not Very Interesting.......2004-07-26

There are so many people who write about themselves, and so few who tell a good story while doing so. In the grip of a good story, I will forgive self absorption, indulge even smugness - to a point. But the episodes in this book are simply not good enough as stories, and they display an unappealing self involvement on the part of the author. Her writing is craftsmanly, but these vignettes probably should have been limited to an appreciative circle of family and close friends; they are not compelling enough to hold the attention of a general audience. I am sure the author is a lovely person with a talent for friendship, but her tone of self congratulation (and self justification) is ultimately off-putting, especially when the narrative payoff is so slim. What is the point?

It's hard to easily categorize Blue Piano: the stories represent very real insights into the music world and sensibility, yet contain the passion and vivid descriptions of fiction. Suffice it to say that musicians in general and pianists in particular will relish these lyrical first-person insights.
