      Book Description

Martha Black was an independent 32-year- old when she joined the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898. Like other stampeders, she endured the grueling Chilkoot Trail, traveled by boat down the notorious Yukon River, and worked placer gold claims while living in a primitive log cabin. Eventually she became a successful businesswoman owning a mining camp and managing a sawmill. At the age of 70, she was elected to the Canadian Parliament. Martha Black is one of the North's most colorful characters.

Journalist and friend Flo Whyard has edited Martha Black's fascinating life story. Inspired by Black's achievements, Whyard was elected to the Yukon Territory's legislature at the age of 58, and later became mayor of Whitehorse.

5 out of 5 stars The best kind of history book.......2004-04-27

This is such a great book about frontier life by a real frontier woman. Her life was amazing. You get such a real sense of what life was like back then told, first had, not by someone else recounting Martha Black's thoughts, but her real words (I love the words of that time!) about her experiences, triumphs and tragedies. If you ever wanted to know what it was like for a middle class white women of independent mind to live in the late 1800's and the early half of the 1900's, both in the US and Canada, then this is the read for you.

Outstanding Lives is a book of photographic portraits and short essays about 70 contemporary gay men and lesbians. Ranging from political figures such as Roberta Achtenberg, the first openly gay person to be nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate (she was Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity) to Rudolf Nureyev, one of the world's greatest ballet dancers, the people highlighted in this book attest to the tremendous variety of contributions gay and lesbian people are making to the world today. This will be a fun resource or coffee- table book either for people who need to be introduced to gay and lesbian culture or for the queer household that wants to wander through a scrapbook of "the family."

CNBC's Ron Insana is one of the founding fathers of TV biz-news punditry, and his analytical strength and fondness for puns do not desert him in The Message of the Markets, the followup to his book Traders' Tales: A Chronicle of Wall Street Myths, Legends, and Outright Lies. But despite his trademark perky tone (the section on the Gulf War is titled, "Oil's Well That Ends Well"), Insana writes to fulfill an extremely serious ambition: he wants you to learn to use the fluctuations of the financial markets to actually predict the future.

He's not kidding. Insana insists that the market leaves coded messages, "breadcrumbs on the road to the gingerbread house." With a few charts and a bit of technical explanation, he shows how you could have profited in the Great Salad Oil Swindle of 1963, the crash of 1987, the Asian crisis of 1997, and other riveting fiscal dramas. Insana makes his points convincingly. There's his anecdote about President Kennedy's assassination, when the market began to tank before the news got out. One broker sparked the selloff, saying it "had something to do with the president." The possibly apocryphal explanation: Disappointed dealers at a Dallas brokerage house go back to their office when JFK's parade is halted without explanation. Though nobody suspects the truth, their manager can think of no bullish reasons such a parade would be cancelled, only bearish ones, so he sells early and saves big.

While this story remains unverified, Insana has plenty of verified market-message examples: the 1990 oil spike that heralded Saddam Hussein's Kuwait invasion two months early, the Thai baht crisis that presaged the turning of Asia's tigers into whipped kittens, and the 1993 Dow Jones Utility Average warning preceding the 1994 bond crash. A notable anecdote: one trader deduced a 1980s spat on the border of Egypt and Libya based strictly on upticks in U.S. based oil companies and defense stocks and dips in two international oil stocks and a designer-jeans company dependent on Egyptian cotton.

Can you really predict Greenspan by reading Insana's book? Or is it all just Monday morning quarterbacking? Hard to say. But Insana's book is as fun as the investment game itself. --Tim Appelo END

              Book Description

Can the financial markets really foretell the future?

According to CNBC's veteran market watcher, Ron Insana, they can and they do.

Every day the world's markets are speaking--shouting, really--boldly predicting the future. In fact, they are reflecting information not yet revealed to the general public: events as dramatic as the outcome of a war, as tragic as a nuclear accident in some distant part of the globe, or as mundane yet vitally important as the future and still secret decisions of the Federal Reserve.

In order to understand what the markets are saying, you have to know how to listen to and interpret the messages they are sending. This is the first book to show readers how to understand the signals put out by the markets, and how to use that information to advantage in their lives.

Since ancient times, writes Insana, investors and merchants have met to buy and sell goods--and to exchange information and gossip. This information is reflected in the prices charged for those goods, whether it is news of war in a farflung region that will cut off the world's gold supply or a crop failure that will make wheat scarce.

Now skip to the present day, where the proxies for goods and services--tradable securities--act in exactly the same fashion. From the price of oil to foreign-currency fluctuations, from the price of a stock to the interest rate offered on a bond, the financial markets provide clues to events great and small. For example, Insana documents howthe stock market sent a shudder down Wall Street several moments before President John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallasthe crude oil market tipped off the world that a war was imminent between Iraq, Kuwait, and the United States--and then predicted a quick victorythe wheat market told the West about the seriousness of the Chernobyl nuclear accident days before official word of the meltdowna tiny currency known as the Thai baht warned the global markets that the Asian economic crisis was imminent and potentially devastating.

In the world of finance, Insana reveals howthe yield curve gives a one-year advance warning of an impending recessiona little-known futures contract is capable of predicting with great precision what the Federal Reserve will do to interest rates weeks before the Fed makes its decision

At a more personal level, Insana shows how individuals who heed the warnings of the markets will make better personal decisions regardinginvestments mortgages and loans real estate purchases career choices and much more

Whether you are an investor, a market buff, or are simply interested in making better financial decisions, the markets are speaking to you in a very relevant and personal way. Let Ron Insana be your guide and interpreter to understanding the message of the markets.

5 out of 5 stars The market is the message.......2004-03-03

CNBC anchor Ron Insana's second book on the stock market, "The Message of the Markets," follows "Traders' Tales" in 1996, and does an excellent job of selling you on the idea that the market does send signals for anyone who's interested in looking for them. Using Insana's words, "Many times the prices of stocks, bonds, and commodities accurately anticipate or forecast future events. "But what is a "market?" If a market is where buyers and sellers come together and agree to exchange assets - stocks, bonds, futures, options, wheat, oil, gold, cloth, Beanie Babies, guns, drugs, etc., then the "message" of the market has to be the PRICE resulting from that exchange. That price level conveys enough information that if you know what you are looking for, you will be able to anticipate future events solely on the basis of price and its trend. Why? Because there is what Insana calls "smart money" and "dumb money."Smart money belongs to insiders, those closest to the action who see and know what is happening. They act on their knowledge, leaving their tell-tale footprints of transaction prices for all to see. Then there are the outsiders; the ones who wake up one morning and read about something that just happened, realize that it is significant, and decide to catch the obvious trend already in progress, invariably buying from those same insiders who got in months ago anticipating exactly that outcome. What Insana doesn't say is that without smart money to indicate the way, all markets would be chaotic, panic-driven price spikes in either direction as everybody tried to react to the same thing at the same time. He is particularly correct when he warns to watch out for the price move "with no apparent reason." It can signal momentous events on the horizon. The real message of the book thus becomes that if you learn to track where the "smart money" is going, then in addition to profiting along with the insiders on the various price moves, you can also make more intelligent business, investment, and career decisions. Insana uses the interest rate yield curve as well as popular averages to predict the onset of recessions; market internals (Advance/Decline Line, diverging Dow Jones Averages, etc.) to predict the stock market; and commodity price movements to predict geopolitical events.
He gives industry/sector group relative strength rotation credit for frequently predicting the economy's strengths and weaknesses and cites ways in which this can be used in selecting career paths as well as suggesting business trends. He uses commodity price moves as signals that foretell future events such as Chernobyl, the Gulf War, the Egypt-Libya potential war, and other geopolitical upheavals.  However, I believe he makes too much of the market selling off just prior to the announcement that JFK had been shot. There is a story about a certain well-known network newscaster in Dallas making the call back to his NY newsroom, then ripping the pay phone out of the wall to keep other reporters from using it to get to their newsrooms. So there may have been real reasons for the news delay. Anyway, the market was shut down with the Dow suffering only a 3% decline. After remaining closed one additional day, the market continued its upward climb for the next 3 years. While a member of the Pacific Stock Exchange, I witnessed the same momentary "front-running" when Reagan was shot on March 30, 1981. On that day something "felt" amiss when we suddenly got hit will an avalanche of sell orders. Minutes later, the news tape announced that the president had been shot. But like in the Kennedy situation, the market dipped momentarily, then continued its rally. In these two cases, the message was inconsequential, financially speaking. After giving numerous examples of what market signals are and how they've fared over the years, Insana asks his most thought-provoking question: "So why was it that most investors, all the world's politicians...failed to notice trouble signs on the horizon? Once again, it was the failure of many observers to pay attention to the market's ominous message."  The implication being that the rain clouds were forming but nobody took notice. The answer is simple yet unsatisfying: As long as we listen to what "they" say instead of watching what "they" do, we will always fall victim to "their" market. What Insana is making a case for is a market discipline termed Technical Analysis. It looks at market action, valuing above all else the constant interplay between the supply and demand for a any tradable entity, and considers Fundamental Analysis (Wall Street research) as so much hot air. It is not a particularly popular stance, but it is much closer to allying yourself with reality than anything else.

3 out of 5 stars A book on history, not investing.......2001-08-24

Ron Insana's The Message of the Markets is an interesting read of financial market history. His thesis is that movements in the financial markets can foretell future events, but he ignores all those times the markets reacted irrationally. This book cannot make you a better investor, but it is one person's interesting perspective of history.

              2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2001-05-23

I have long liked Ron Insana on CNBC. Based on my respect for his thinking and well reasoned commentaries on the air, I bought his book on blind faith.

With much anticipation I settled in to gain a better understanding of the markets. Unfortunately, the book didn't live up to its title. I forced myself to finish the book thinking that eventually I would get "the message."

At times I became lost in the text. Long paragraphs led to one sentence paragraphs which did not seem to be part of any natural progression. Charts sometimes did not seem to match the points that they were to help illustrate. While I am anything but an editor, I had the feeling that more editing might have helped.

Bottom line: this book is not a "keeper" for my future reference.

4 out of 5 stars Good point - wrong emphasis in presentation.......2001-05-01

This is a well-informed and very readable book on the informational value of the financial markets. However, this is not a how-to book on stock picking. What Mr Insana is concerned with in this book is not so much what price movements can tell us about an individual stock, but the macro information that the financial markets can tell us about the economy, geopolitics, major news events etc. There's almost no advice on individual stock picking based on price movements (too noisy), but there are advices on how to choose a job, time the purchase of a new home, move cash in and out of the market etc. based on the message of the markets.

In retrospect, some of the messages from the markets identified in the book are quite prescient. A good example is the rapid deterioration in the A/D line at the height of the Internet bubble. Of course that phenonmenon did not go unnoticed by the market pros. I clearly remember numerous analysts assuring viewers on CNBC that the stock market was not over-valued (and therefore in no danger of collapsing) because so many stocks were in the doldrums!

The book was filled with anecdotes about how major economic and geopolitical events (from Fed rate cuts to border wars between Egypt and Libya) are foreshadowed by unexplained market movements. Had Mr. Insana focused on the rationale behind these movements his argument would've been a lot more convincing. Instead, the book had a tendency to ascribe a sort of magical, oracular power to the market and the "smart money" that makes the market. Of course the real reason is a lot more mundane. Sometimes it's rampant insider trading (as in the oil futures mkt). At other times anyone who has bothered to read a newspaper would have seen it coming from a mile away. A good example is the collapse of the Thai baht. Any regular reader of the Far Eastern Economic Review would not have needed the markets to send a msg - for months the magazine was filled with dire warnings of imminent collapse in its op-ed pages.

Another issue that Mr. Insana did not address is the very important question of how to separate the signal from the noise emanating from the market 24 hours a day. As someone who had (foolishly) dabbled in the futures market, I know first hand that wild swings in the market can be triggered but nothing more dramatic than a 1/2-hr T-storm in downtown Chicago. (I always susepct that if I wait at a 2nd fl. window at the CBOT and sprinkle water on the head of a particular trader as he leaves the building, I can make a killing in soybeans.) In the days of old when the market was almost the exclusive domain of the Smart Money in the know, the msg. of the mkts was probably a lot more reliable than today, when the unwashed masses can steamroll the smart money based on the most ludicrous rumor posted on Pump-n-dump.com. How to separate the grains from the chaff is something we'll have to leave to another CNBC author.

BTW, there really is a web site called pumpanddump.com.

5 out of 5 stars A piece of the puzzle unveiled.......2001-03-24

Many underestimate the value the news can have on their investment strategies. Insana's research demonstrates the usefulness of correctly interpreting and acting upon the news. This reinforces the somewhat shorter-term "buy the rumor; sell the news" experiences my partner and I have had and discuss in our book "How to Start Day Trading Futures, Options, and Indices." Nothing occurs in a vacuum--not the behavior of the market nor that of other investment vehicles. Insana's book points this out in a easy to read, informative manner.

                Book Description

The increasing cost of gunsmithing services has caused enthusiasts to perform minor repairs, refinishing, and deep cleaning on their own firearms. This updated edition shows how to easily diassemble and reassemble centerfire rifles and the correct tools needed. Sixty-six popular guns are taken apart and individually photographed. The cross reference index identifies more than 400 similar or identical rifle patterns that also follow these disassembly and reassembly directions. It covers the Argentine Mauser to Marlin Model 9 to Russian AK-47 to US M-1 Garand to Winchester Model 1894.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Gun Digest Book of Firearms Assembly.......2007-01-29

This book is very good at step-by step instructions. The pictures are well taken of the actual part you are working on. There could be more model numbers to go over, but the ones they have are very good. The author is exerienced in gun repair and it shows up in the "tip" portion of every model. I think a list of specialty tools would benifit the author in this book, since each model of firearm needs at least one special tool. Not all, but most. Listing those would benifit the less experienced gunsmith. Thank you

1 out of 5 stars An Indespensable Tool!.......2003-03-30

This book and all the others in the series are invaluable to the professional gunsmith, firearms hobbiest, or the casual gun owner who just likes to "see how things work" but can't always quite remember whether this little spring went in here, or over there.

2 out of 5 stars Not easy to use........2003-02-15

This book is an excellent guide for disassembly. It is worthless as a guide for reassembly. There are no step-by-step instructions for reassembling a firearm. At best, the book assumes that reassembly is the reversal of the steps involved in disassembly. This is not necessarily so. I would not recommend this book to a hobbyist.

1 out of 5 stars I had to have this book for work otherwise I wouldn't.......2002-12-30

Since I am a Gunsmith and deal with a variety of firearms I bought this book for disassembly/assembly instructions.

This book is almost 23 years old and in sore need of updating. It does not even cover the new S&W auto pistols, Glock series of Handguns, or the Heckler & Koch (HK) MP 5 submachine gun. All of these are in wide use by law enforcement. Further the Mossberg 500/590 isn't cover either. Duh! It is the only shotgun to pass the mil spec test and is in wide use by cops.

Unless you just have to have it for work wait for an updated version that covers firearms developed and in use by law enforcement in the last 23 years

5 out of 5 stars If you can't field strip it, you shouldn't own it........2002-11-09

If you cannot field strip a weapon you really have no business owning it. I bought the volume on automatic pistols and I was not disappointed. For most of my life I was a revolver man and I stayed away from automatics because I didn't understand them- and I was convinved that they were unreliable. When I bought my first Model 1911 (which has NEVER jammed on me) it didn't have a field manual, so I bought this book. It didn't take long before I was field stripping and reassembling blind-folded. I feel confident that I could do the same with any automatic even loosely based on John Browning's designs. I might have trouble with German designs like the Luger or Broom handle Mauser, but after studying this book I feel sure that I could eventually master them too.

                Book Description

Sue Ellen Cooper, bestselling author of The Red Hat Society: Fun and Friendship After Fifty and one of the founders of this bourgeoning group--which increases by 100 chapters a day--provides the foreword, and the animated character Ruby Red Hat hosts the proceedings in high style and high spirits.

There's no doubt that the "Red Hats" are an amazing phenomenon. Not only did the book written by its founders stay on the New York Times' Bestseller List for weeks, but more and more women over 50 just keep catching the wave and joining the movement. And what could be better for the now nearly one million members who celebrate fun and friendship than scrapbooking? They'll all rush to those shoeboxes filled with photos and come to this brightly illustrated volume to see how to do it in the inimitable, adventurous Red Hat way. Fifteen sections, organized by particular "Red-Hat-isms"-such as Dress for Excess and Exercise Your Funny Bone-are introduced by Ruby Red Hat, who's always garbed in the appropriate manner for each particular theme. The nearly 80 projects include both flat album-type pages as well as spectacular dimensional ideas for gift boxes, invitations, and other designs. Readers will also appreciate 9 pages of patterns-not to mention the wit and wisdom they'll find along with the techniques.

There are so many fun ways to create pages for Red Hatters!!! I also had to purchase a copy of this book, not for just the great ideas of scrapbooking but because I'm featured in a couple of the photos. If you're a Red Hatter this is one book to have!

4 out of 5 stars Mostly photos of scrapbook pages.......2006-01-23

I purchased this book because on the Red Hat Society site it said it had nearly 100 projects in it. In actual count there are 26 actual craft projects, plus 72 photos of finished scrapbook pages. Lots of cute ideas but don't think you're getting nearly 100 different "projects".

Book pages are about 9" square and the photos of the scrapbook pages are about 7" square. Excellent, clear photography showing all the design ideas. Each scrapbook page has a little box with a description of the page contents or techniques. The scrapbook pages are almost all very gaudy with expensive embellishments, I would guess to be prepared to spend up to $10 per page if you copy them.

The projects include a Bra Purse made from a large red bra (I gotta do this one!), table accessories, Christmas ornaments, invitations, bags, tags, books, boxes, a Royal Sceptre, and more.

There are lots of tips and techniques sprinkled throughout, humorously presented.

A good price here on amazon, I paid $20 for it at the Red Hat Society site.

                    Book Description

When my wife told me she was pregnant with our first child I was scared down to my socks. I didn't know the first thing about babies. What's a layette? And why does my wife want to buy one now? What are we going to do with all the pink dresses when we have a boy? Which end of the baby do you diaper? Why won't it (No! He or she!) Stop crying? And why does my wife keep talking to me like I should have known these things since I was 5? (Because boys usually don't!) Why is she shopping so much when the baby isn't even due for 6 more months? If you're like I was when I was first a daddy, and want to avoid some of my mistakes, and take advantage of some of the things I've learned, this is the book for you. While it's not all you need to know from conception through toddler years, it's a good start.

It gushed too much like an article from a teen magazine. I'm giving this one to the thrift store, and I always keep my rock and roll books. There were some poignant moments where you saw more of Dennis Wilson than just his womanizing and self-destructive personality. But if you want meatier text that really delves into who Dennis Wilson was and what his music was all about, definitely read Dumb Angel: The Life and Music of Dennis Wilson by Adam Webb. Also a good read is Dennis Wilson: The Real Beach Boy by John Stebbins.

                    4 out of 5 stars A moving read.......2002-12-14

I really enjoyed this book, particularly because of the positive spirit of it. It was an attempt to correct some misperceptions about a most misunderstood person. The stories from friends, family and acquaintances added a wonderful new dimension to the public perception of Dennis Wilson. It makes you wish that you knew him. He touched the lives of many people. His loss was tragic, not just for the music that might have been, but also for those of us who never got to meet him.

This books is basically a collection of tributes and remembrances and even some obscure interviews, though a bio or timeline of some sort would have probably been helpful to readers. There are many good photos but are all black and white (and few are dated as a point of reference) The author's list of features on the back cover claims "*Color pop-art designs by the artist/author" I found these to simply be photo-manipulations and they were not in color. I was glad that someone created a tribute to Dennis whom I met several times, but was a little disapointed with the quality of the book on a whole for the price (...).

I consider myself a true fan of the Beach Boys (yes, this species exists in Switzerland)and I've read a couple of books on the subject. If you are not very familiar with the story of the group and the background of the Wilson family, this book is NOT for you. It is rather a collection of articles, views (and reviews) of people close to Dennis Wilson, including even his children. The author clearly expects the reader to know the background, since not even a brief biography is included. But if you DO know your Beach Boys, this book is great. Rare pictures I haven't seen anywhere else and very personal stories about Dennis. The man deserved this book. However, since good reading about DW is scarce, a little bit more background on Dennis history would have been a nice addition. Ok, and now I'm gonna listen to Pacific Ocean Blue and think once more about what he could have accomplished, if he was still alive.

"I shall not remain insignificant," are the words of Anne Frank before she knew the world would never forget her. Barry Denenberg's Shadow Life: a Portrait of Anne Frank and her Family is a story that keeps her memory alive. This book illustrates the journey of Anne Frank through the perspective of her family, friends, and fellow holocaust victims. It is broken up into chronological parts of her life: her childhood, the secret annex, the camps, and life after the war. While Denenberg does not pull directly from Anne Frank's personal diary entries, he gives another point of view to paint the picture of her experiences living in a world war. This point of view is intriguing because of how it is not from Anne Frank, but from others.
As told by narrators, Margot (Anne Frank's sister), other friends, and holocaust victims, this book details the story about Anne Frank and her family. First, the narrator describes Anne Frank's childhood, the beginning of the war, and the Franks' move from Germany to Holland. Next, it turns into a part called "Hiding," which is all written by Margot Frank in her diary. There, she talks about every day life in the Annex and what happens behind the big secret bookcase door. Third, "Dying" is all about the camps the Frank's went through and the quotes from fellow victims. Finally, "Surviving" is the last part about Otto Frank's (Anne Frank's father) life after the war. The most important part of this book to me is not only what is described, but how it is written, and all the points of view it incorporates. In "Hiding," the part written by Anne Frank's sister, she talks about life in the secret annex writing, "It is nearly impossible to find someplace quiet during the day... I read and do my schoolwork and shut out the rest as best I can (pg. 61). This is just one of many examples in which Denenburg does a great job of portraying each person's image of the Secret Annex.
Young adults will enjoy this book for the clarity of the story, but also the complex clockwork behind it all. Despite the numerous voices of all the different narrators, there is a lucid flow to this book. "By the fall of 1944, Hitler's regime, knowing they were going to lose the war, began destroying the physical and documentary evidence of their monstrous crimes (pg. 189)." The reason we know so much about this historic event, is because of people like Anne Frank and other holocaust victims. Shadow Life is not only about Anne Frank's struggle through World War II, but the big picture behind it all.

1 out of 5 stars Sad story retold sadly.......2005-11-18

A retelling of the story of Anne Frank with virtually nothing new added. One section is a diary written by Anne's older sister, Margot, that describes the family's years in hiding and the final section uses quotes from concentration camp survivors to describe Anne's experience there. Actually, Anne is hardly the main character here, instead it's the story of her family and their friends who lived together in hiding for more than 2 years until they were found by the police and sent to Auschwitz. There isn't even an explanation for how they were actually found, the police just show up one day. There must be a better explanation, such as someone informing the police. So much has been written about Anne Frank that a new book should offer a unique perspective, but this one is based on many past books the author mentions in an afterword, which is like saying there's no need to read this.
