This biography's great strength is that the author was able to interview Collins' surviving contemporaries and was offered unrestricted access to personal and family material.

Michael Collins: The Practical Visionary.......2000-12-31
Margery Forester describes Michael Collins in the words of another writer as "that most formidable of all men of action, the practical visionary". This biography, which was probably the most highly regarded until Tim Pat Coogan's momumental work, is still in my view one of the most readable and the one that perhaps catches the essence of its subject best, as the opening quotation indicates. In this work Forester presents all the usual facts about Collins--his youth, his rise to prominence after the 1916 rising, his intelligence, his intensity, his personal courage, his love of country and comrade, his wit and warmth--but manages to add touches that bring out even more vividly the real character of this extraordinary man. Thus, her descriptions of his interaction with children, whom he loved and who loved him; his identification with the ordinary people of Ireland and his affinity for old people; his iron self-control in matters of personal indulgence; his refusal to disguise himself during the time he was the most wanted man in the British Empire; his often-brusque manner with women, which both affronted and intrigued them; his changes of mood "as spectacular and unpredictable as the play of the Northern Lights"; and his ability to inspire trust, love, and loyalty in the many people who worked for and with him. This is a vivid biography of a young man who was both realist and idealist and who led his country to its first taste of real freedom in 700 years.

The courage to tell the truth, hidden from many out of fear........2004-01-07
I have read this book with tears and satisfaction. I, too, am married to a woman who suffers from this terrible tragedy and have lived a similar life the author describes in this book. He has captured the utter sadness which can and does surround us all, hidden in the secret threats and tortured minds of many.
As I read this book the last numerouse years of mine, and my wifes life, came rushing back. The author has truely captured what it means to love another, to give whatever you have to give to see to it anothers life is changed for the better, to see to it the fear instilled by those who would hurt a child, and forever remain anonymous, are brought out into the open.
The courage of Diane, and her inner friends, is of the highest regard in my mind. Diane's determination, steadfastness and all around get-it-done attitude is, and will, help many lost children hidden inside so many grown women, to become free of their fear.
This book can help those locked inside to reach out with hope, to know they can trust, be free of the pain and live life with smiles.
You have the courage to read this book, your life will be changed, you will see others in a clearer light, you will believe.
For those who suffer now or have suffered in their life from the tragedy described here, this books lets you know there is help, caring, understanding, love and compassion. All you have to do is believe, let go the fears which keep the secrets hidden, which give the secrets power to silence, to see your abusers for what they really are, and become free at last.
My life has been and is changed by the text of the life this book reveals.
Great work.
Poorly written and dull.......2003-09-07
This book was written in a confusing and poorly written manner. The last chapters were especially dull and filled with a lot of psychological mumbo jumbo.
An incredible account of a DID! Super recommended!.......2001-08-05
I loved this book, from the beginning to the end, I never wanted to put it down. So many emotions, so many feelings, all at once, and I could feel too, the pain, the mental anguish of all those involved. I recommend this book for anyone going through sexual abuse feelings or past emotions hard to deal wtih. This is a wonderful recount of one person's love for another.
Honest and touching..........2000-07-20
This book is an astonishing look at courage in the common-place, and the extraordinary ways in which lives can be torn apart. The only book ever written by the spouse of a multiple, it avoids the coldness of the therapeutic documents most common when dealing with this topic, and instead shows love, commitment, and how the passion of a spouse can make all the difference in growth and healing.
An Emotional Roller Coaster Ride.......2000-06-26
I could not put this book down! I have already read it more than once and each time I gain some new insight into this incredible, and true, story. It is an emotional roller coaster from start to finish, and if you can get through it without crying, you are made of tougher stuff than I am.
Book Description
Millions of people worldwide have been stung by the NASDAQ bug. Are you one of them? Are you in dire need of a psychological defense system against the travails and quagmires of the stock market maze? This book, saturated with humor, fiscal savvy and anecdotes will supply you with the perfect antidote to insulate yourself from the debilitating NASDAQ fever engulfing our capitalistic society.
The recent roller coaster ride of the financial markets has driven many people crazy. Some have amassed fortunes investing in Internet and hi-tech stocks, while many more have been driven to bankruptcy. In my case the NASDAQ simply saved my life. This lifesaving incident has taught me how to maintain my sanity and equilibrium in the precarious world of market upheavals. The lessons learned from this "cliffhanger"; experience are packaged in this book alongside other spicy episodes.
In order to survive in cyberspace among our fast-moving Internet generation, one needs to resort to humor more than ever before. The mostly satirical anecdotes contained in this book will help you laugh off the NASDAQ blues and at the same time laugh with the NASDAQ.

For once, here's a book whose contents live up to its (very long) subtitle; it's a smart and straightforward amateur's guide to the basic valuation factors of everything from china, crystal, and glassware to furniture, figurines, Barbie dolls, and old garden tools. It kicks off with a blunt rundown of the main elements that determine an object's value (and contrary to popular belief among the antiques laity, mere "oldness" isn't necessarily one of them), and then provides a fun and detailed glossary of key words, styles, and makers in seven main areas of collecting: pottery and porcelain, glass, silver and other metals, furniture, paper, textiles and needlework, and "catch-all."
Then the book walks you through a room-by-room assessment of your own house (including, yes, the bathroom, attic, and tool shed), helping you get a sense of whether the family china or that so-called Biedermeier sofa is really worth anything, or if there's currently an eager market out there for those old straight-edge razors, Timex watches, Star Wars action figures, animal-shaped cookie jars, or back-issues of Life. However, the authors stress that this is not a guide to accurate do-it-yourself appraisal, and that only a legit appraiser (and not an antiques dealer) can give you a true retail value on an object.
The overall tone here is notably generous and uncondescending, and even when an air of barely repressed disdain for the myriad know-nothing civilians they've encountered sneaks in, it's more amusing than off-putting. (When they plead, "Please, do not call a lamp a 'Tiffany' unless it was made by that company and bears its trademark," you can almost hear their aggrieved sighs of schoolmarm exasperation.) For wannabe collectibles pros, weekend flea-market prowlers, or anybody with a houseful of intriguing junk, this plainspoken, substantial guide is a keeper. --Timothy Murphy
Book Description
Pull those old toys out from under the bed. Grab the toaster tucked in the back of the kitchen cabinet. Gather up your old china and Christmas ornaments -- just don't throw them out! In Treasures in Your Attic, Joe L. Rosson and Helaine Fendelman, professional antiques appraisers and hosts of the popular television show, aired on PBS stations across the country, explore the valuable objects found in most ordinary American homes and learn that frequently the most valuable items are the ones you've overlooked.
Joe and Helaine give you an inside look at how the antiques market really works, how value is determined, how to "talk the talk," and where to go to research your "treasures." Then they take you on a room-by-room treasure hunt of an ordinary home -- and they talk prices as they examine the discarded toys in the children's room, the costume jewelry in the bedroom, the old gadgets and appliances in the kitchen, the furniture tucked into the attic, and even the concrete garden ornaments in the backyard. Finally, they'll help you figure out the best way to sell -- or buy -- antiques and collectibles at auction or on the Internet.

Good walk through of what you might find in your parents home that is valuable. I won't just repeat what others have said about this book. I would have put the dictionary style entries in the first section of the book as an appendix. Just jump ahead to section two and the book is more interesting. I didn't appreciate the third section on buying and selling. The authors told war stories about antique dealers and auctioneers that, while entertaining, would scare off any novice collector. Sure, buyer beware, but how about conceding that the vast majority of antique store owners and auction companies are honest and fair?
It Used to be Junk to Me, But..............2001-06-17
If you are at all interested in "collectibles" or antiques, "Treasures In Your Attic" by Joe L. Rosson and Helaine Fendelman will be a treasure in your bookcase. After you have been bitten by the bug and scoured your house and/or that of your parents for treasures, "Treasures" will be remembered or frequently referred to on the way to or from Antique Stores, Garage and Estate Sales and Flea Markets. Unlike Mr. Jussell who wrote the book's Foreword, I can't comment on its usefulness to "seasoned antique collectors" because I am a novice who became fascinated by collectibles from watching antique discussion and appraisal shows on television. I can, however, recommend this book to both the beginner and to the individual whose interest and curiosity eclipses his knowledge. This very entertaining, informative, and easily read book is organized in three parts: "The Basics" (things you should know about your hobby), "The Treasure Hunt" (a discussion of collectibles that you may find in each room of your house or on display at "sales" and how to recognize them) and "Professional Advice." The Basics Section is just that - what you must know to communicate and understand communications about your addiction. Professional Advice is a distillation of knowledge learned by the authors in the school of hard knocks and includes an indispensable discussion of how to buy and how to sell treasures over the Internet. If Rosson and Fendelman had included a chapter on references useful for research and authentication, the book would be awarded "5stars"; and the authors a General Electric D-20 toaster. As is the book deserves the 5 stars and perhaps the toaster will be awarded for the next book.
Buy this book!.......2001-06-07
"Treasures in Your Attic" is a great read for the novice collector and expert alike. It's worth every penny just for the well-written, easily understandable section of important terms. As the authors point out, knowledge is power and knowing the lingo can save you money. Inspired by the book, I was looking around in my mother's basement just the other day and found an old piece of T. Anthony luggage. Unfortunately it was rather beaten up, and as Rosson and Fendelman informed me on page 282, such pieces are only good if "they have not been sideswiped by a bus and have not spent the last forty years rotting in a damp basement." Too bad for me. Humor pervades the vast amount of practical knowledge in this book, making it really fun to read. It's a reference that belongs on the shelf of anyone who hopes to make a deal or a profit on an unexpected find--or who simply wants to keep the treasures to himself. P.S. I tossed the suitcase.
Very useful.......2001-05-20
I love the way this book is arranged. It takes you through your house in a logical fashion. Finally a book for the average person . It is for those of us with things tucked away for years and and years and no idea if they could be valuable. This book should save a lot of people like me from making an expensive mistake.I was so surprized at the things that are valuable. I didn't have a rare piece of art but I do have many everyday items that belonged to my grandparents . they proved to have a lot more than sentimental value. I consider this book a good investment. Treasures in Your Attic.......2001-05-16
If you never know what to bid on at all of these great estate auctions, then this is the book for you. Having just started going to auctions this summer, I have been amazed at some of the prices items are bringing. That's because I didn't know what they were. Joe and Helaine's book will let you know what to look for at these auctions and they will also give you tips on knowing what is selling right now. I read the book with great fascination knowing that I had old post cards my grandmother collected...marbles that appear to be homemade...some glass bought in Murano, Italy some 35 years ago and more. I think we all like to think we have something of value just waiting to be found. This book will help you know what you have and then how to market it. I highly recommend this book for the novice collector or for the new auction attendee. It will get you started on the right foot and hopefully you too will have "Treasures in Your Attic" even though Helaine and Joe say..it's the worst place to store valuable items." See you've learned something too. As a Program Manager for a PBS station, I am anxious to air and view their new series...coming to a TV set near you at the end of June.

Better than the others.......2001-11-13
I read this book shortly after having my twins. It is very easy to read and find chapters of what you're interested in or skip the ones you're not. I bought 2 other "twin" books--and of the 3 this is the one I felt gave he most useful information. It's not flashy, doesn't have any cute twin pics-- but the info is there. Not only does it explain twinning; but also household organzation, coping w/ 2 crying infants, sibling adjustments, potty training and school issues. The other books I read scared me-- lots of horror stories without any suggestions how to avoid it. I didn't give it 5 stars because it is a pretty dry read. But other than that this one is better than "Having Twins" and "The Joy of Twins."

Read the inspiring true story of how a talented singer and teacher held onto faith and hope after a bizarre accident left her a quadriplegic.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiul Woman - Beautiful Spirit.......2007-09-15
Reneé is not only a great singer, a truly moving speaker, a devoted mother and wife, but she is also a beautiful woman, inside and out. She believes that God has a purpose for her life, and she lives as though there is eternal meaning in everything she does and says. I have had the great joy and privilege to know her for nearly ten years, and everything positive, hopeful and joyous in her book is very real.
Yes, she has had low times. Yes, she has been discouraged. Haven't we all? But her message to us is about the goodness and grace of the God she loves. Despite a physical handicap which might have caused her to retreat and never emerge, she has instead resumed her singing career and has chosen to speak in order to spread the word that God is, indeed, good. A wonderful and truly inspiring story for the handicapped, but even more so for those of us whose handicaps are not as readily visible as hers.
This is not only Reneé's story, it's Mike's as well. He is a very special person and the essence of a "gentle man."
Read the book. Buy her albums. You'll be glad you did.
WHAT AN OVERCOMER!.......2006-11-10
I first heard Renee Bondi nearly 9 years ago at a Women's Luncheon at my mother's church. Awesome voice, awesome book, awesome testimony, awesome person! When I found this book at my Christian bookstore, I was really excited. And it certainly didn't disappoint. In fact, I went back several years later to that same Christian bookstore to pick up a copy for my best friend. Unfortunately, it was out of print! Thankfully, I was able to find one -- CD included -- through Amazon.com!
Not only did I appreciate her upbeat attitude toward all that life had thrown at her -- and all the miracles that God did through her -- but I also appreciated her honesty in revealing her not-too-Christlike -- but very human -- feelings toward her sister's accident and some of the day-to-day frustrations of being a quadriplegic.
One minor thing, though. I think the actual date of her accident might have been Sunday, May 15, 1988 instead of Sunday, May 16, 1988, as my husband and I were married on Saturday, May 14, 1988! But that's minor.
I would recommend getting the book that includes the bonus CD in it, for it not only showcases her lovely voice but also the depth of feeling behind her singing. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
Enjoyable biography from a wheelchair-bound woman.......2004-02-03
Finished reading this enjoyable autobiography yesterday. As a woman who has never been confined to a wheelchair and who has no disabilities, I am in awe of Bondi's balanced attitude, practicality, and her admission that the lack of privacy a paraplegic endures is difficult.
The strong cable of love that helps Bondi survive and thrive is amazing. It makes life a little easier for her; maybe a lot easier. The cable of love is comprised of the author's former students, her husband, friends, clergy, immediate family, and extended family. The cable is anchored by Christ.
Inspiration Biography.......2003-09-12
Renee Bondi's courage and good humor prevailed after a heart-breaking accident that left her quadriplegic. Her faith in God and human kindness enabled me to address an uncomfortable situation in my life. Her book is truly inspiring.
Reviewed by Alexis Powers, author of Paths to Freedom: Women Who Triumphed Over Adversity.
Very Uplifting.......2003-07-12
Renee Bondi's story of her daily stuggles is very uplifting. I am in a wheelchair full time. I have been since birth. I can not imagin how hard it must be on a person to go from being able to do anything they desire to having to depend on people 24/7 literly overnight. Even though I am paralized from the waist down, I could identify with Renee on some level. I laughed and cried through the whole book. I also have met Renee when she came to speak at my church in '96. She is as neat of a lady as she seems. I was thrilled to see my town mentioned in her book. I recomend this book to anybody

An absorbing read for all ages.......2000-11-05
This is a spellbinder of a book that describes in amazing detail the hardships endured and overcome by the author as he escapes the Nazi regime and makes his way to Israel, resettles there, marries and then emigrates once more to the United States. The writing in this book is exquisite and one feels he stands right beside the author as he endures the terrible hardhsips and overcomes mans inhumanity to man. A book not to be missed.
A Wonderful Read.......2000-10-27
In flowing very easy to read detail "Winds of Life" tells the story of an ordinary boy and then man who was sweep along by the forces of history. From the horrors of a concentration camp to the pulse of life in Palestine one can develop an understanding of this period of history. Mr. Evan writes in a soft non political way that allows the reader to experience his life. This book is a very pleasureable great read.
Winds of Life.......2000-09-26
I had the pleasure of meeting Gershon Evan in his mid-70's,and his wife, Rina, within my medical practice. Evan mentioned that he was trying to publish his story which he felt was worth telling. Not only is it worth telling as a historical parallel to the holocost and the subsequent establishment of Israel, but it was well told; at times Hemmingway-esque in the journalistic details of army life, and at times the sad personal tale of a 16 year old youth displaced from his family and his life.
History in Perspective.......2000-09-04
Winds of Life describes first person life in pre-war Vienna and the German assault on the people of Europe. Mr. Gershon takes the reader with him to Palestine while running the British blockade and entering into the conflicts of an emerging country. His unique perspective as a young adult in the newly created Palestine gives you insight in to the wheres and whys of the current Middle East.
Winds of Life is in no way a "them and us" - it is a description of countless factions and divergent ideas presented to a young man experiecing life on his own. His decision process in chosing direction is very enlightening.
Excellent read!.......2000-08-31
Interesting story of a young man who survived many hardships during the holocaust and during the building of a new nation. Couldn't put this book down I finished reading it.
