Another Serb nationalist.......2001-10-30

Moderate Serb nationalism is the consolation prize one expects when looking for dissent from that camp. When a Serb author shows a willingness to be the first to stop making excuses and to disavow fully genocidal Serb nationalism (what a hard thing to do!) that we will have a book worth reading. This isn't it.

The inside story.......2001-07-04

If you want some insight into the psyche of that pugnacious and obnoxious defendent at the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia, this is the book to read. Slavoljub Djukic, a respected Serbian journalist, has been following the career of Slobodan Milosevic (as well as his wife Mirjana Markovic) since the rise of this dull communist functionary to national prominence in the late 1980s. Djukic researched his subject meticulously, and made good use of his many contacts in Serbian/Yugoslav political and media circles, to say nothing of his keen powers of observation over the last 10+ years. There are vivid descriptions of the personalities of both Milosevic and Markovic, whose influence on her husband was/is legendary. Djukic also provides a wealth of information on many other important figures in Serbian politics over the course of the last decade, from Milosevic's many accomplices and yes-men to opposition leaders. Another valuable, but more indirect, aspect of this book is that it provides some insight into the views of moderate Serb nationalists (like Djukic) who greatly opposed Milosevic's regime. This is essential reading for a better understanding of Serbian politics and recent Serbian history - although I suspect a new, updated edition is in the works given Milosevic's imprisonment and subsequent, very recent extradition to the Hague.

To Know You is to Understand You.......2002-07-10

There are parts of life that you may never know about or understand unless an insider tells you. The author shares a part of her life that is certainly painful and retelling it must have been very difficult. However if she had not told us we would not have known nor had a chance to understand. This is a story about survival and the amazing ability of the human spirit to overcome adversity from those who you should be able to trust. This story is as great and powerful as the stories told by those who survived the WWII concentration camps. We thank those survivors who tell us their story so that we can prevent the dark past from happening again and do somthing for those who may be going through the experience now. The author tells a story that can not and should never be forgetten. You will be changed by the experience and view the world around you diffrently and it may help you protect your own family some day.

The Throw Away Kids.......2002-06-04

Gripping, honest, brutal, unsettling---these are the adjectives that best describe the tone and nuance of "The Throw Away Kids". Ms. Taggart opens up her heart and mind to the reader as she leads us down the dark corridors of her childhood. She explores the physical results of constant, daily and prolonged beatings, as well as the emotional toll of manipulation and verbal abuse. Ms. Taggart and her siblings fell through the cracks---a dysfunctional family unit, a poorly run and uncaring social service department, contributed to years of pain and unhappiness. I highly recommend this book. It is time---and the time is now---to stop throwing our most valuable resource away---our children.

The Throw-Away Kids.......2002-05-23

This book addresses real issues that community and different church leaders have to deal with. It is an eye opener and gives hope to those who have been abused. It is a success story of one who endured the worst, one who overcame it all, and is now living a happy and successful life. It is fast reading and , definitely worth it!

Recession Relevant 2002.......2002-02-09

To quote Janet Lowe's description of Graham's "Intelligent Investor" "This book was written for the people on Main Street rather than those on Wall Street". Laurence Sloan's insight into the future is astounding. He makes assumptions based on sound economic theory in the midst of the Great Depression and most of what he predicts actually comes true. I read it in 3 sittings and it was a refreshing change from the dry financial titles that I have read recently. Short on algebra, long on theory but a worthwhile read.

Good for people who aren't looking for a "steal".......2007-04-11

As an Interior Designer I found this book an interesting read. I like to check out books written for the public to see what kind of advice is being given (there's a lot of bad information out there). This book offers insight into the furniture buying world of which the public is often unaware. Be warned, though, if you are used to bargain hunting this isn't likely to help you find a $50 sofa or $30 dresser. This is intended for people who want to buy better quality, long-lasting furniture. (she talks about good dressers starting at $1200 - for some people this may seem like a lot of money).

It is also most helpful for people who live near a city as she talks a lot about shopping design showrooms. One thing I did not see mentioned is that trade showrooms usually require that public shoppers be accompanied by a trade professional or at the very least have a legitamate letter from one (and an appointment) stating exactly what the client will be looking at. Many of these places will not offer assistance or pricing to the public without such. You'll need to investigate this prior to embarking on your shopping trip. If such is the case, your best bet here is to have a design professional aid in the process or you will have to pay outrageous retail prices. The Design Center usually offers these services (for a fee).

That said. She does explain a lot of terminology found in furniture buying as well as many pitfalls (one being that your average furniture salesperson's opinion varies markedly and can often be based on fabricated speculations). Ms. Letwin also offers an education on furniture styles for those who are interested.

If you are shopping for quality pieces that you plan to have for the rest of your life you may find this book helpful. It pays to be forewarned. For the price it can't hurt to get this book.

This book was such a great help. I use it as a source for everything, most recently for online antique shopping. I never would have known which stores to check out -- and to trust -- without the information I found in this book. It's great.

A Quick, Easy, Helpful Read.......2005-11-15

I recently purchased a new home and had decided that I wanted completely different furnishings. I had no idea where to start and Best Furniture Tips became an invaluable guide. It enabled me to understand various styles,furniture terminology, what to look for in a piece of furniture and information on how to negotiate prices.

I especially liked the advice and insights from some of the nation's top designers. Since I travel frequently the book was easy to take along and enabled me to check out design centers and stores in other cities in my spare time.

Litwin has a pleasant writing style that explains in easy to understand English all the furniture jargon and pricing structures which many times seem overwhelming to a buyer. I would recommend this book to anyone who is contemplating a furniture purchase. Armed with this, one can confidently enter any store and not feel like a babe in the woods.

One suggestion, buy her previous book, Furniture Hot Spots to find out where the really good stuff is.

Good range of difficuly levels.......2006-08-04

I really like the patterns in this book. The designs range from simple patterns that could be used as suncatchers to more elaborate designs with over 100 cuts a lot of which are concave. Some patterns would look best with jewels and seemed to be designed for them.

Some of the patterns presented are just variations of one another. So, there aren't quite as many patterns as the product descrption might imply. However, there was a lot of variety packed into this book.

I feel like this book was a good value.

Nice Range of Complexity in Design.......2000-04-19

As with all Mr. Sibbett's books, the images translate well to computer application when scanned. Most designs are two to a page with three on some pages. There is a nice range of complexity in the designs from simple to very detailed. Some designs too are scaled to produce items where the image needs to be large, for instance when you would want the image of only one or two flowers on the side of a box.

The Beck Book.......2001-06-10

I think this book is awesome (I am currently reading it), it has tons of stuff included in it. Everything from his background to his discography, and the discography is not only a list, it tells all about his songs and albums. The only reason I did not give it a 5 was because it did not have too many pictures, and the few it had, I did not think they were that good. So if you are looking for a book with lots of pictures, this is not it. But if you just want to learn more about him and his work's affect on people, get it! I think it was worth the price.

This book is probbaly the most worthy of all the Beck books out there, it is VERY insightful and full of wonderfull analisies of concerts and preformances. They actually went to the source for information... unlike some of the other books. I also recommend Beck and AL Hansen Playing with Matches... very inspriational!!! and almost a thesis for life and art. and also Beck on a Backwords river. cute interviews and stories from his childhood!
