Mother Jones finally given rightful place in history!.......2004-03-21

"Mother Jones, Revolutionary Leader of Labor & Social Reform" clearly dispels the myths and untruths that have been written about this fascinating and brave woman. In her book, Ms. Wake reveals how Mother Jones' documented speeches, writings, correspondence, and actions are blatantly misrepresented in or entirely omitted from the annals of history.

Ms. Wake is (to the best of my knowledge) the first researcher and author to rightfully connect Mother Jones' politics with revolutionary syndicalism and identify Jones as a feminist.

This book is a "must read" for those seeking the truth about how the labor struggles of the late 1800s and early 1900s relate to the political, economic, and social struggles of today. Wake's book provides the most in-depth analysis of Mother Jones I have come across. I highly recommend this book for readers whose interests include history, labor history, women's history, and social justice.

Touching leftist tribute to a remarkable woman.......2002-04-25

This exuberant account of Mother Jones' renowned career as labor agitator and social reformer is a rather stylish repackaging of the author's 1995 Master's Thesis in Government from the California State University at Sacramento. It is clearly a labor of love with the basic argument is that this one woman did more than anyone else, especially men in leadership, to address the plight of the worker. Wake is especially critical of labor leaders, particularly UMWA President John Mitchell, who she argues forgot his roots and sold out his working constituents to join with the exploiting capitalist elite. She starkly contrasts this with Mother Jones who remained essentially poor and homeless, and thus remained a part of the working class, throughout her long peripatetic career. She also stresses Mother's vehement opposition to capitalism and dedicated committment to both syndicalism and socialism, and argues against confusing Mother's dissatisfaction with the Socialist Party in America with any disillusion with socialism in general. She also attempts to tie Mother's political views with various contemporary radical movements such as Feminism, opposition to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and Ralph Nader's crusade against the establishment. Wake is to be commended for presenting hitherto unpublished (and perhaps unknown) correspondence from the Special Collections and Archives of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Archives between Mother Jones and UMWA District #2 President John Brophy regarding her 1921 Labor Day visit to Indiana, PA. On the other hand, her speculation about a possible love affair between Mother Jones and Terence V. Powderly, head of the Knights of Labor from 1879-1893 and later federal official, is fanciful at best and based upon purely circumstantial evidence. Overall, this book is a fast reading and touching leftist tribute to a woman who, regardless of ideology, was remarkable by any definition of the term.

Survivor.......2003-12-01

It took a true survivor to write down the hurtful memories from childhood like Kathleen Frank experienced.
It is an accounting of what went wrong with systems that failed children. The parents,foster parents, relatives, children homes,
and schools all failed.If only they could be accountable for their actions or lack of correct actions.
I applaud Kathleen, she took a horrible childhood learned that there was a better way to should be done.We can't change what's
been done,but we can improve on things in the future.
I hope more people will read Kathleen's book, and treat children with more respect so they may carry it into adulthood.

The book permanent roots that I have Just read was a wonderful book. It has inspired my life and I would recommend this book to every one to read. I really enjoyed reading it. What I like the most about the book is that she struggled all the way through her growing up years but continued to endure through all the pain no matter what she went trhough she made it. And later on in life she became what she wanted to be in life. I feel all she went through made a impact on her life as well as others. Get a copy of this book and read it. A heart breaking story........2003-11-02

As I read this book Temporary Custody Permanent Roots, I got a understanding of what my family went through in the foster system. The stories they told me were horrible something no child should indure. I thank my parents for taking that chance and raising me to the person I am today. I look to Kathleen for the hero she is and helping the children in need and making a change in their lifes and to my own.

A success story.......2003-10-27

There is no bitterness in Kathy, no trailing anger, no regrets. She is friendly, warm, and productive. How did she survive what she narrates in her book to become the person she is now?

She tells us the the story of her life with surprising candor and honesty. She does not cry as she talks, she just talks. Her book feels like it might have felt for her to live in the children's home: an endless succession of neglectful, abusive situations that become natural -"normal"- simply because they are the elements of her daily life.

This book is of extreme value to all involved in the care of children dependent on state agencies. A child can usually say little about what is wrong in her life. Often she dos not even know that her circumstances are different. Voices like Kathy's, that rise as an afterthought because they belong to the few really successful survivors of the system, should be listened to carefully. Their message must be used to transcribe the voices of those still being shuffled through the laberynth.

Kathy's book should also be placed in the hands of these children. Her voice carries strength and determination. Her honesty opens doors usually kept closed. Her message inspires. Her book has the power to help plant a seed of self-respect and love in the hearts of those who might be powerless to stop living "temporarily".

Find a better metal clay book.......2007-09-27

Like Jackie's later book Metal Clay: The Complete Guide, she totally ignores the fact that there is more than one metal clay product on the market. Why? Because Jackie does not distribute Precious Metal Clay® (PMC) made by Japan's Mitsubishi Materials Corporation; she runs Art Clay® World, USA, Inc, distributing Art Clay®, a metal clay product made by Aida Chemical Industries, Ltd. At the very least, she might have discussed the pros and cons of the two companies' products. To ignore PMC® altogether seems too mercenary an approach to writing a project book. I said my peace when panning Jackie's book Metal Clay.

The projects shown are somewhat inspirational but the "faux raku" project stands out as just plain economically silly. For "faux raku," Art Clay® Silver paste is applied over terra cotta then, after firing, liver of sulfur is applied for a raku-like patina. It occurred to me that it would be a whole lot less expensive to actually make raku pottery than to make "faux raku" with jewelry-grade silver. Yes, you can do it with Art Clay® but why would you?

If you just want a place to start with Art Clay I suppose this book will tell you what you need to know but as for me, I only want to make items that I will love to wear and this book does not have items that are attractive unless it is possibly the crude little rings. To simply cut a little stamp sized rectiangle out of a flat piece of silver clay and crumple it up a bit is not what I am interested in. I don't find the results pleasing at all and would not want to wear it. I do have an interest in setting stones into silver, and I do have an interest in making rings. However the ring this book shows is so crude and amateurish looking, so rough, that it again is not something I would enjoy wearing. I make jewelry and every item I have ever made is beautiful and wearable. I do not want to waste my time and money to turn out things that I would be ashamed to be seen wearing, and in my opinion, this book has nothing but that sort of jewelry. This is the shortcoming I am finding in most of these books explaining how to make your own jewelry. I love creating beautiful, wearable art, but this junk is just not art.
Also you will need a small kiln and a tumbler, which furthur accentuates the fact that there is a considerable expense involved in this process. If you are going to go to this amount of trouble and expense, make something really beautiful.
While it could be argued that since this book is for beginners with art clay, one cannot expect it to show beautiful pieces, I disagree and feel that a beginner can be shown how to make items that will be beautiful right from the start. See the book Bead on a Wire as an example.

This art clay (trade name) book covers what everyone should know that is going to use the Art Clay brand metal clay. The first sections/chapters get the basic stuff down so one can move on to the fun parts making the projects. The pictures are of a good size with large numbers to correspond to the descriptive blurbs. They are of the close up type with little background of the work surface visible. (I do hate it when they show more work surface than the item they are making.) The material lists are well thought out in their content. The glossary and the gemstone characteristic chart is a nice touch. the chart really important in selecting stones to bake with the clay. I own it

Disappointed in the breastfeeding advice to other sisters.......2000-03-06

Breastfeeding is an important part of our African heritage, in Africa babies thrive on their mothers milk. In the U.S. we have the highest infant mortality rate, sadly; in this "modern" nation. Breast milk can never be manufactured nor replaced. I was disappointed in the authors lack of encouragement toward breastfeeding especially since women of color could benefit their entire race through breastfeeding. Breastfeeding saves lives and it's healing properties are beneficial to both baby and mother. (prevention of caner in mom, prevantion of serious illness in babies-toddlers) Breastfeeding is the natural progression of mothering after pregnancy.Though time consuming it may be (as the author states), what other time are we going to have in our lives to devote to our children? When we are old and grey we should look back on those nursing moments with pleasure, but many mom's never get that pleasure. Regretably these mothers and their babies are missing out on a lifetime of mutual benefits that breastfeeding brings. Personally I have found breastfeeding to be both convenient and preferrable vs. formula feeding. It's always warm, ready and up high where the cats can't get to it.

THIS BOOK COULDN'T HAVE BEEN WRITTEN AT A BETTER TIME. I WAS PREGNANT WITH MY FIRST CHILD AND OFTEN REFERRED TO IT FOR FUN, AND WHEN I EXPERIENCED CERTAIN AILMENTS, CRAVINGS, AND SYMPTOMS DURING PREGNANCY.

THE BOOK WAS VERY WELL WRITTEN. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO READ ABOUT THE MANY MYTHS/WIVES TALES PASSED ON BY AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. I PURCHASED SEVERAL COPIES AND GAVE THEM AS GIFTS TO FRIENDS WHO WERE ALSO EXPECTING.

I CAN'T WAIT TO FOR CHRIS' NEXT BOOK TO HIT THE SHELVES. I'M SURE IT TOO WILL BE MOST ENJOYABLE TO READ.

Before he became a writer, Grant Jarrett spent years of his life as a musician. Not just any musician, but specifically as the much less heralded younger brother of a famous and respected jazz pianist. For any jazz fans out there, you can easily figure out who big brother is. Two striking things about this book are apparent once you're finished with it though. One: Grant admirably doesn't trade on his brother's name here. This book really isn't about being a younger sibling to someone in the spotlight. His brother is merely incidental, because this memoir is much more about a young man struggling to find his niche. Two: It's because of sheer talent as a writer and his acerbic wit that Jarrett is able to pull off this sometimes unflattering peek inside his life.

Jarrett begins the memoir as a teenage drummer when he leaves home on his first big gig. What follows is an often hilarious and sometimes wrenching journey as he travels across the country wearing cringe- worthy ruffled shirts, boozing, and playing more women than music. As he bounces from band to band and woman to woman, one of the things that helps elevate this book above barroom, glory-days chatter is Jarrett's uncanny ability to be brutally honest with the reader (and himself); not just about his poor sartorial choices and sometimes lacking musical skills, but also about his personal choices and actions. He has a sharp wit, and he turns that weapon as mercilessly upon himself as anyone else in the memoir. He's sometimes too hard on himself, so that when he's berating himself for his unsavory behavior, the reader still feels a sympathetic pull for him. This works because he's not only charming and funny, but he's never really bad so much as just plain lost.

He was growing up and moving on in these years. He was often struggling and flailing about, unable to hit the peaks of musicianship he hoped for while clearly searching for someone to accept him for what he was. But with the publication of this memoir, Grant decisively proves that the talent in the Jarrett family flows in more than one direction, and that even though music wasn't his calling, it provided hysterical and touching fodder for unleashing his gifts.

Real writing talent and gobs of humor........2004-07-07

There are two things that set this memoir apart from many others I've read: humor and real writing talent. That is not to say that I haven't enjoyed a lot of memoirs, several by musicians, it is just to say that MORE TOWELS has more to offer, for my tastes at least. HOLLYWOOD ANIMAL really failed to make me care, and Sting's book was interesting but not entirely engaging. Like most people's lives, memoirs often lack a traditional arc, and this is true of More Towels, but Jarrett has natural writing skill and a fantastic sense of humor, and he is so self-deprecating that, between laughs, you find yourself rooting for him. My only complaint about the book is that we have no idea how he made the leap from musician to writer. There are at least ten years unaccounted for. In spite of that minor glitch, I loved the book and recommend it highly.

A great surprise.......2004-07-04

More Towels is far funnier (and much better written) than the highly praised bestseller from which I got the recommendation. This book made the purchase worthwhile! Thanks Mr. Jarrett.

Finally, a no-bu#$$%^t memoir........2004-07-01

I am an avid reader, and I particularly enjoy good memoirs and biographies, but I have been frustrated repeatedly by writers who gloss over the experiences that embarrass them and focus on those they're proud of. Grant Jarrett gains you sympathy through honesty and a fantastic sense of humor. He shares the worst of himself without apology and laughs at himself as the reader does. He has a breezy writing style that is perfect for the material and yet he can make you feel for him and some of his "victims" when he wants to. I'd love to see more from this skilled author.

I was a regular reader (and enjoyer) of Mr. Jarrett's monthly column in FOW, an international Financial Industries publication (I'm not sure he knew a thing about finance). When he suddenly disappeared I feared I'd never laugh so hard again. But after a bit of googling I found this jewel of a book. Initially I was concerned that like other humor columnists he might not succeed in a book-length work. But this book is hilarious and Jarrett is in fine form. A very talented writer with a natural wit. More Towels is a treat.

Brenden(Bren) and Jasimina(Jazz) have defeated the Shadowmaster, but have also lost Jazz to the cold grip of death in doing so. Bren misses Jazz. He has rebuilt the path with his brother and now all he wants is his girlfriend, Jazz, back. When Bren learns that there is a chance for him to get Jazz back, he sets his mind on taking that chance. But where Jazz is, few have dared enter, and even fewer have come back. Jazz is in Talamadden, and all she wants is to get back to Bren. And with the aid of a blue peacock, she intends on exiting Talamadden and going back home. Jazz needs to get back home. A spy has entered L.O.S.T., and it is Jazz's duty as queen of L.O.S.T., to make sure the spy doesn't harm her people. When, with the help of Bren, Jazz is free from Talamadden, she must hurry with Bren to stop the spy. When Jazz and Bren reach L.O.S.T., they find a battle raging. The battle leads Jazz back to Talamadden with Bren, where the new Shadowmaster lies in wait to kill them.

I liked this book. What I liked about it was the fact that the relationship of Bren and Jazz seemed to be all consuming to Bren and Jazz. When Jazz was in Talamadden, all she could think about was how much she wished she was with Bren, and all Bren could think about was how much he wished he was with Jazz. Jazz had more important matters on her mind while she was in Talamadden, like how was she going to get out or how would she get out in one piece? While Bren had to think about all of his people, and to make sure that his brother didn't do something stupid. When Bren and Jazz reunite, their relationship stays strong and grows stronger even though they act like jerks to each other, and that was the best thing - they could love each other and be complete jerks to each other at the same time. I also thought the book was good because Jazz and Bren continually had to overcome all the attacks on L.O.S.T. while they had to deal with the major problem on how to make their powers separate, or how to get Todd from being a complete jerk. It was interesting to see them trying to stop one thing while they had to fix another.

Shadowqueen - a must read.......2005-10-11

I stumbled across L.O.S.T. a couple of months ago at my local library and decided to give it a go. I read it in 2 days and couldn't wait until the sequel came out. I'm glad to say I was not disappointed. I read Shadowqueen in the same amount of time and I seriously hope the author is hard at work on the third installation!

What a waste! Since 99% of the recipes are from test kitchens rather than famous people, the title is misleading, if not false advertising. Although it does contain many recipes from famous women, there are countless celebrity cookbooks and even online sites -- and the good ones all include something from the celeb telling why that particular recipe is special to them. This book doesn't even bother to do that. Moreover, the print is very small (and green). I ordered this along with _Mom's Secret Recipe File_ -- which was cheaper and is far superior. Celebrity cookbooks are great fun; this just doesn't happen to be one of the good ones. Although I own well over a thousand cookbooks, I'm returning this one. A total waste of money!

"WOW!" This is a terrific cookbook for both beginners and experienced cooks. Who wouldn't find it interesting and a challange to cook a sesame chicken speciality from Jane Fonda;(pg. 168)an eggplant casserole from Debbie Reynolds (pg.82)and a chocolate cake speciality from Diane Von Furstenberg (pg. 285).
I am finding the pages at the end of the sections helpful to add my own notes too. And the tips and tidbits throughout the book are always a great addition.
Thank you Ms. Rothstein and Ms. Neft - your cookbook "Recipes for Our Daughters" has landed a permanent spot in my kitchen!
I highly recommend this book to everyone who eats and cooks!

I absolutely love this book! It's fascinating to see what today's leading women submitted and cook in their own homes. The recipes are appealing and clear. Also, the tips are incredibly helpful. A great gift for anyone!

this is a very friendly and efficient guide to good dining. the recipes are very "user friendly" and not time consuming. they are also "hip,diverse, and enticing" so as to invite experimentation. i gave this to my neice who just loved the tips and tidbits section. she was really impressed with the basics and guidelines that she really felt she needed. of course, she loved the "celebrity aspect", which make this cookbook a unique combination. this is a great gift!!

My daughter's not even a big cooker and she loves this book! At first I was skeptical about this book and thought it was driven by star-power alone, but in reality the recipes are excellent and the dishes are an extension of these women's personalities. This book is a "kitchen keeper"!

This work presents the state of the art of aquatic and semi-aquatic ecological restoration projects in The Netherlands. Starting from the conceptual basis of restoration ecology, the successes and failures of hundreds of restoration projects are described. Numerous successful projects are mentioned. In general ecological restoration endeavours greatly benefit from the progressive experience achieved in the course of the years. Failures mainly occur through insufficient application of physical, chemical or ecological principles. Spontaneous colonization by plants and animals, following habitat reconstruction, is preferred. However, sometimes the re-introduction of keystone species (e.g. eelgrass, salmon, beaver) is necessary in case the potential habitats are isolated or fragmented, or if a seed bank is lacking, thus not allowing viable populations to develop. Re-introducing traditional management techniques (e.g. mowing without fertilization, low intensity grazing) is important to rehabilitate the semi-natural and cultural landscapes that are so characteristic for The Netherlands.

A tough, true fictional account of a child's holocaust.......1999-08-31

There have been a number of accounts of the Holocaust which claim to be documentary but in fact depend on literary invention. On the other hand, Charney labels her story of a pre-school- age girl hiding for years in the loft of a Polish barn a fiction - because as she explained in a much-discussed letter to The New Yorker she could not vouch for the factual authority of her story since she was so young when she lived it. Though it is fiction in category, it has the grave sculpture of fact in its midst. The great literary integrity of the work lies its deep unsensational account of one of history's most astonishingly sensational tragedies. The book has been richly rewarded with respect in Europe where the reality of the fictional Dobryd is known in thoughtful peoples' bones.This is a classic work.
