John C. Crosbie is one of Canada's best-known political leaders, an outspoken Tory who could have become the leader of the Conservative Party in 1983 instead of Brian Mulroney had it not been for his sharp reaction to constant questioning about his inability to speak French. As it is, he served in several ministerial capacities, overseeing everything from Canadian fisheries to international trade. In No Holds Barred, the retired Crosbie reflects on his career and his peers.

He was born in 1931 in Newfoundland, at a time when that region was an independent member of the British Commonwealth. His father was a businessman who turned to politics to promote the cause of continued self-rule ("responsible government") and economic union with the United States, although he was thwarted in these goals by Newfoundland voters' decision to become part of Canada in 1948. Crosbie himself became a vocal proponent of free trade and was a major promoter of NAFTA within Canada. "The Canadian concern about the United States and how it is going to affect our cultural values comes largely from Toronto," he writes. "It comes from the cultural literati, the encyclopedia peddlers, all those people who have a direct interest in protecting their writing, or performing, or whatever they do, from U.S. competition."

Crosbie speaks frankly about his beliefs concerning Canadian government, such as the advocacy for gay and lesbian civil rights that aggravated many within his party, and particularly the economic necessity of continuing as a unified nation. Readers outside Canada will find No Holds Barred a lively and spirited crash course in that country's politics, while its citizens will appreciate the insider's perspective Crosbie brings.

This memoir takes us from Crosbie’s younger days as a medal-winning student to municipal politics in St. John’s and then the crucible of Joey Smallwood’s corrupt dictatorship. The stories of those Newfoundland days seem almost incredible now, and affected Crosbie’s attitude towards greater provincial powers.

We tend to forget that John Crosbie came close to succeeding Joe Clark as Tory leader. Typically, it was his testy response (“I can’t speak Chinese either”) to a question about his French that crippled his campaign and gave Brian Mulroney a narrow win. But he served at the very highest levels as minister of finance, transport, justice, international trade, and fisheries and oceans. He was arguably Mulroney’s most effective cabinet minister, and it is instructive to see just how progressive his legislative record–which included promotion of gay rights and divorce reform–was.

He was not, however, the most reticent of ministers, and this book is studded with unrepentant “Crosbie-isms.” Never one to worry about political correctness, he delivers powerful broadsides on such topics as patronage, feminism, and the “lazy” and “uninformed” media.

In No Holds Barred, Crosbie offers trenchant opinions on issues ranging from Atlantic Canada’s prospects after Quebec separation and the desirability of fostering a closer relationship with Castro’s Cuba. At the same time, he shrewdly and unflinchingly assesses the politicians he has known. He describes the baseness of Smallwood, the laidback style of Frank Moores, the vacillation of Joe Clark, and the crass opportunism of the “brothel-creeping” Liberals. He evaluates Kim Campbell’s disastrous leadership of the Conservative Party and discusses his epic feud with “Tequila” Sheila Copps. Nothing is withheld in this entertaining (and sometimes outrageous) memoir by one of the dominant politicians of his generation.

Provocatively, infuriatingly, frustratingly typical.......2004-02-11

John Crosbie is not a buffoon. John Crosbie is a hypocrit. John Crosbie is a braggart. John Crosbie thinks he's smarter than you. I started off reading this book with admitted skepticism. I don't particularly trust most politicians and I find most autobiographies self-serving and always one-sided. Early in, I was at least satisfied that Crosbie could at least acknowledge some mistakes and I was impressed with his knowledge and vocabulary. If ever you've gotten the impression from his infamous foot-in-mouth disease that he's uneducated or stupid- he's not. At least not in terms of politics. In terms of people he's (to borrow an Al Franken term) a "big, fat idiot." I seriously had to put the book down several times to calm down. His gaul to insult the Canadian public simply because they didn't always agree with his or his government's policies- too stupid, too sheepish to know what's good for them. Say that at election time, why didn't you? And then he uses the brains of the public to prove a point about Canadian art! To those worried about American culture and entertainment taking over and killing any such industry in Canada, Crosbie says that the Canadian public will decide if Canadian art is good, and if it is it will survive. If the Canadian public is so good at deciphering good art from bad art, why does he feel they aren't capable of distinguishing between good and bad government decisions? It was also so infuriating when he'd lambaste the Liberals for being corrupt yet he'd go on to declare that any corruption on part of the PCs was a necessary evil. Hypocrit. Still, he made me think, analyze, criticize and question history as I knew it. Not many other books have made me do that lately, and so, it wasn't a waste of a read.

A solid read for those with an open mind........2002-12-15

John Crosbie has brought much needed light on the unfashionable truth of Conservative power in Canada. From his days as Newfoundland Liberal MPP to his cabinet positions under former Prime Ministers Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney, Crosbie describes the disturbing hypocrisies that are embedded in Canadian politics. He discusses a length the myth of Joey Smallwood, the duplicitous behaviour of Pierre Trudeau, the mean-spiritedness of a pro-Liberal media, and the orchestrated and groundless nature of the Airbus Scandal. He writes how easy it is to rise and fall in this country, depending on how the story is spun. "No Holds Barred" may not win any Liberal converts but it is absolutely essential if one is to know the Conservative point a view. Today's leaders may spoon feed an apathetic population with dogmatic ideas, but "No Holds Barred" manages to bring forward some welcomed facts to all those who dare call themselves educated.

Excellent and comprehensive review of Sig Sauer pistols. Unfortunately does not include the new Sig R-DAK models with their unique and butter smooth trigger systems, recently adopted by the Coast Guard and some other more secretive Federal agencies.

Could stand an updated edition, but still well worth the money.

(I'm writing this after a quick first read-through of the book, so please forgive any error I may unintentionally inject.)

I'm a pretty solid "gun nut," with an excellent and diverse gun book library. I always feel ambivalent about these books that purport to give an overview of a gun company and its product line. While I'm interested in learning stuff that I don't already know (bring on the minutiae!), many of these books (those of one particular coffee table author come to mind) turn out to contain little more than a few beautiful photos with a ton of incredibly dull rah-rah copy: recitations of annual production numbers for various models are a highlight. However, Ayoob's GUN DIGEST BOOK OF SIG-SAUER is a good example of what can be done RIGHT with this type of book.

Ayoob, love him or hate him, is a major gunwriter for a reason. He can write (unlike some) and he's smart. One may disagree with some of his theories (I do, personally) and one may question whether he is right or has experience on a given legal or tactical issue, but the man knows how to write interesting articles about guns.

That's what he does here. The GUN DIGEST BOOK OF SIG-SAUER has a chapter for each model of Sig-Sauer's pistols, from the P-220 through the GSR 1911 (nothing on the new 250s, alas). Ayoob covers each model in detail (you'd think this would get boring with the overall similarity of the Sig-Sauer pistols, but it doesn't) offering insights as to each model's pluses and minuses, as well as intelligent commentary on the sociological niche each model fills. There are chapters on the Sig-Sauer in training, in competition, and on the various custom options available. There are chapters on SIG handguns like the P-210 and on the SIG-H?mmerli target series. There's a chapter on tactics featuring a bunch of goofy photos showing folks performing drawstroke techniques taught by Ayoob's LFI. It's an amazingly thorough book (the NH-based Ayoob's physical proximity to SIGARMS might have helped here): well-written and informative.

The book serves up hundreds of well-done photos to illuminate the text. They're not always placed right next to the text they're illminating, but that's okay. (They're not always of Ayoob, and that's great, too.) Ayoob provides photos of interesting points (e.g., comparisons between the stamped steel slide of a 220 and the milled steel slide of a 220 ST, old grip styles, comparisons of the short and long trigger styles) that fulfill the reason to have a book like this one. I know that Gun Digest books are usually full of good photos, but this one is better than most.

Because of the photos and the nicely delineated text, this is a book that one can read for a couple of hours or just pick up for a couple of minutes (I foresee a lot of copies camped out in the bathrooms of their new owners) to read an article or check out some different photos. Ayoob's writing on each topic is insightful and well-reasoned, and I learned a fair amount in my first run-through.

If you're a "gun nut" (or if you're shopping for one), I don't think you'll be disappointed with this book. Given my aforementioned ambivalence about these "overview" books, I thought long an hard before I bought this one. Now that I've read through it, however, I'm planning to buy another copy for a friend! (By the way, Amazon is offering a great price on the GUN DIGEST BOOK OF SIG-SAUER, which runs $28 at the retail outlets where I've seen it.) Ayoob did a great job with this one!

Admittedly, I prefer Mary Mulari's ideas, but these are some nice "little things" you can make when you are using scraps or whatever. The overstitched purse and portfolio have given me ideas to use my "stash" of fabric scraps and to use that to make more of Mary Mulari's projects. If nothing else it will give you ideas.

I love this book!.......2002-04-05

I have purchased a number of aromatherapy books over the past year or so and taken out about every one my local library holds. This book far exceeds them all for practical, accesible knowledge. They make it fun and start you out with oils that most people can afford. Some of the books I have list recipes, supposedly for beginners, that use 10 drops of rose absolute, jasmine and the more expensive or unusual oils. That's all well and good, but for someone just getting into aromatherapy, they aren't likely to spend... $$$ for a 1/4 oz. bottle of rose EO.

This book is easy to understand, the recipes are easy to make and easy to enjoy and the information provided is good. They start out with oils that are affordable and easily found, but also present special oils each month, like jasmine, frankinsence, and rose, that one can "move up to".

The only thing I wish they had made more clear or stressed more was about applying oils neat. Some of the recipes aren't clear about that and for someone who is just starting, they may not realize that there aren't a lot of oils that you want to use neat due to their strength.

Anyway, great book! I love it.

Paula and Judi have compiled an incredible introduction for someone new to aromatherapy. The book is so easy to follow and read, and the blends are so easy to make and use. In addition, the blends in this book are timeless. You won't outgrow this book. What I liked the best about the blends is you see results immediately. To top it off, it's one of the most beautiful books I've seen. Great on the coffeetable, a great conversation piece, and forever in use. Keep it handy!

I love the way this book focuses on just 12 essential oils. As a newcomer to aromatherapy, I would like to start with just a few oils and add more as I learn more. This book has been a big help in deciding which oils are the most versatile, and are therefore the best ones to buy when only buying a few. Having hundreds of recipes that only use these 12 oils is also a big help. The book is beautifully written with a fair amount of humor. I don't know about you, but I can always use a little extra humor in my day.

Morrissey in his own words.......2000-06-24

Excellent book of quotes from the always witty singer of the Smith's Morrissey. This book sheds life on his opinions of topics raging from: his past, politics, sex, his lyrics, and Magaret Thatcher. This book Chronicles his visions of the band before they took off to stardom going as far back as May 1983 to 1988. Great book, I refer to it all the time.

If you are part of the Moz militia, read it!.......1999-03-19

Anyone interested in the beloved Morrissey will enjoy this book. I am a Moz and Smiths fan, and found that the topically divided quotes help to define his personality, point out how disparaging he is of himself, and that he is a true chameleon. It is fascinating. The only criticism I have is that the quotes are quite dated now, and as Moz is always ungoing rebirth, they may not represent him and his career now.
