Book Description
In the author’s own words: “In 1955, I survived torture to bring back information that prevented a raid on one of our nuclear arsenals. The psychological problems caused by the nature of the torture was so deep that I couldn’t physically talk about it for years. I describe six separate and distinctly different rescues I was involved in. The sequence of events puts me in position to volunteer for a mission that changed my life forever. The conclusion of my book is intense. It describes the mission, torture, and a scoop the American people need to examine. This is a true story. I’m just a common man, no less or more than anyone else. Nobody’s Hero is my story, but it’s just one story out of thousands of stories out there waiting to be told.”

Strong dramatic writing.......2005-10-21
NOBODY'S FOOL is a terrific sports novel that shows the changing heart in a relationship that grows in depth as the story unfolds. It's football better than FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS told in honest down-to-earth writing.
Better Than Long Gone.......2003-02-23
Hemphill's hilarious Long Gone was made into a movie, but Nobody's Hero is better. A former award-winning sports writer and a southerner, Hemphill's description of the relationship that develops between a down-and-out ex-jock from AL and a young African American athlete is beyond believable. You KNOW these guys and pull for them. And, their story is seasoned by the insertion of two salty female characters who are completely captivating. The reader can't help wondering what happens to these characters next so, Paul, how 'bout a sequel?
Another Hemphill Jewel.......2002-12-17
Paul Hemphill's works are marked by carefully drawn characters of complexity and sublety as befits a great writer who has delt so effectively in stories with a Southern context. His Birmingham upbringing, his Auburn U. 'education" and his Atlanta experience provide the football background and the racial context for a story of recovery and redemption in the modern South.
A Great Story.......2002-12-09
You don't have to be a football fan to appreciate this beautifully-written story of a man who finds out he's a lot better than he -- or anybody else -- thinks he is. It's a novel of redemption, and it's full of flesh-and-blood characters who grow and change -- people you find yourself caring about.
If you are a football fan, you'll appreciate "Nobody's Hero" all the more. It captures the grit and the glory of high school athletics, the kids who play and the adults who guide them. And it's a great read.
Paul Hemphill's Best Work........2002-12-08
Paul Hemphill, likely the South's finest writer, has in the past written about country music, NASCAR racing and minor -league baseball. Now he brings his considerable powers to high-school football. "Nobody's Hero" is as exciting and drama-packed as the end-of-the-season championship game between two arch rivals. But what truly sets Hemphill's work apart and above other sports-centered novels are the complex and very human relationships that form the backdrop for the big game.

An interesting biography of the great anthropologist.......2005-03-03
Franz Boas was one of the founders of American anthropology. Born in Germany, he first studied geography. After an expedition to Baffin Island and encountering Eskimos, he became interested in the Indians of the Northwest Coast. He came to America, studied the Central Eskimos and NW Coast Indians, and was hired by the Museum of Natural History in NYC. His relationship with the Museum was stormy and didn't last all that long. A second volume was planned by Cole, but he died before he could get to it. The most interesting sections of the book are the ones dealing with Boas's field work in British Columbia along with other giants in anthropology such as Teit and George Hunt. Cole does not deal a whole lot with Boas's work specifically. A good biography, though incomplete.

Pilates is an exceptional exercise technique for core strengthening, flexibility, and developing a lean, strong physique. But is it right for pregnancy? Yes, says Pilates trainer-to-the-stars Mari Winsor. Pilates is a safe way to reduce stress and increase comfort and balance during pregnancy. Additionally, Pilates will make your pregnancy and delivery easier, your recovery quicker, and it will benefit your baby by keeping blood circulating to the abdominal area, says obstetrician Uzzi Reiss, M.D., in the foreword.
Winsor explains Pilates concepts and techniques, with a focus on the pregnant body. Then she presents 22 to 39 exercises in each of three workouts, one for each trimester, that are most suitable for pregnant women. The exercises are described clearly and carefully in three stages--"prep" (getting in the correct position to begin), "ready" (techniques and cautions for doing the exercise correctly), and "action" (step-by-step instructions)--and are well illustrated with photos.
The Pilates Pregnancy is aimed at both novices and experienced exercisers, but since it's difficult to learn Pilates from scratch from a book, it will be most useful for the experienced Pilates exerciser who wants a safe home workout throughout her pregnancy. --Joan Price
Book Description
By the author of the best-selling Pilates Powerhouse, the first guide to Pilates during and after pregnancy.
A wonderful conditioning exercise for women of all shapes and sizes, Pilates is now recognized as one of the best overall exercises for the pregnant body as well. A low-impact and relaxing exercise regimen, Pilates doesn't divert blood flow from the growing fetus. As important, Pilates strengthens the abdominal muscles known as the "powerhouse," making it easier for new mothers to recover from childbirth and regain their pre-pregnancy waistline.
Working with Dr. Uzzi Reiss, a prominent Los Angeles-based gynecologist and obstetrician, Mari Winsor has developed the first mat-based Pilates routine for pregnant women, bringing this time-efficient and highly effective means to get and stay in shape into the home. Illustrated with 100 black-and-white photographs, the exercises in The Pilates Pregnancy are gentle on the body and easy to do at any stage of pregnancy.
Customer Reviews:
very good pilates workout.......2007-02-11
I really enjoyed the foreword of this book; great information I didn't know. I've done the 2nd trimester exercises and got a good workout. I wish this were available on DVD, as turning the pages while doing a workout isn't so convenient.
I enjoy this book.......2006-09-26
I just bought this book a couple of weeks ago and have really been enjoying it. I feel like my posture is great after a single workout and feel very strong in my core. I always look forward to my Pilates workout.
I felt it was a little repetitive in the intro. and the beginning chapters, when the principles of Pilates, etc. are explained, but they do get their points across effectively.
I also felt they do a disservice to pregnant women by insinuating that Pilates is the only good or effective help for preventing low back pain. (p. 11) For example, they write, 'what chiropractor will work on a pregnant woman?' Any chiropractor I know has had a lot of training to work on pregnant women and their newborns later on. There are also other helpful resources a pregnant woman has, such as massage therapy. I realize they are trying to promote Pilates primarily, as that's what the book is teaching, yet I think it'd be great if they would have been more open to giving a little more info. on things that would work well hand-in-hand with the Pilates exercises.
I use this every day.......2003-06-27
I really like this book. I had been doing Pilates matwork for about 18 months when I became pregnant. I didn't start using the book's routines until I was about 16 weeks pregnant, because before that time my regular Stott Intermediate Matwork video routine seemed fine. I really like the second trimester routine Mari has outlined -- although I don't do the entire routine because of time -- I skip some of the side-lying work and the rowing moves. I'm now 33 weeks pregnant and still doing the second trimester routine because it still feels good (although last week I dropped a couple of the moves that were beginning to get uncomfortable). I have no problems exercising while on my back -- and I have been told that as long as I don't feel dizzy or nauseated, that exercising on my back is fine. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to try Pilates during pregnancy, especially those women who already have at least a basic understanding of the moves.
Not realistic.......2003-06-18
I am long-time Pilates practitioner and bought the book out of curiousity when I became pregnant to see if there were any different ways of doing the traditional exercises. Windsor keeps the method "traditional" to a fault. There are not enough modifications shown. Also, too many of the exercises are done lying on one's back. This is just not realistic after a certain point in pregnancy. I felt lightheaded and dizzy from lack of oxygen lying down! I would have liked to see more sidelying exercises, magic circle routines or standing exercises. The forward of the book if well written and there is no doubt that Pilates can relieve many of the discomforts associated with pregnancy. It really can keep you in shape and help you regain your body after a baby. However, this book is only suitable for an experienced practitioner who knows how to safely modify the exercises. I would never recommend it to a novice. Rather I would steer them in the direction of a good yoga for pregnancy book or video.
it's ok but not great.......2003-03-06
this book is an ok book but it takes an hour or more to do all the excrecizes. also it is seperated in to each trimester that's a good feature. but in both the second and third trimester it still has you doing excrcizes while lieing on your back. no way through each of my pregnancys my doctor has said don't lay on your back after the 1st trimester. other than that the book is good it get's you in shape and it dose help alot postpartum

Miriam Haskell-- the QUEEN of Costume Jewelry!.......2000-05-11
She is definately a QUEEN when it comes to costume jewelry. If you are a fan of her Jewels, you won't be sorry buying this book. (Amazon is the best place too!)
Jewels of Miriam Haskell.......2000-04-22
Miriam Haskell is recognized as an important American costume jewelry designer in this wonderful coffee table book. She had a penchant for the unusual with her ostentatious accessories. She was born in 1899 in Tell City, Indiana to immigrant parents (a Russian father and a Prussian mother).
At the dawn of the Roaring Twenties, she moved to New York City with $500 in her pocket, opening a small boutique. Named Le Bijou de L'Heure, there she sold costume jewelry that she designed. In the early 1920's, Haskell advertised that "colored glass necklaces, one for each outfit, are considered a necessity this year."
Not only was Haskell riding the wave of the Roaring Twenties, she was creating a wave of her own. The Twenties were the years that all of the fashion rules were broken. Haskell's unbounded creativity met with enormous popularity. The prices for her costume jewelry were much lower than the cost of precious metals and stones, so anyone could afford to look fashionable.
The popularity of her costume jewelry continued, even after the stock market crash. Her sales did not drop significantly until 1931. Another difficulty Haskell encountered was the lack of material available for jewelry during WWII when glass from Bohemia and white metal was scarce.
Haskell never registered her designs, although she began to sign her pieces in 1950. The Miriam Haskell trademark was not received until 1988, 64 years after she began designing. Because there were no marks to identify her work prior to 1950, it took a great deal of research on author Cera's part to verify pieces of costume jewelry as Haskell's. Cera relied upon advertisements in magazines and newspapers, and photographs of movie stars shown wearing jewelry attributed to Haskell.
Haskell drew inspiration for her designs from many cultures - South America, China, Greece and the US southwest Indian designs. Her designs mimicked or consisted of any and all materials, including flotsam, stones, seeds, berries and beans.
For the collector of costume jewelry, this book is a keeper.
The Jewels of Miriam Haskell.......2000-02-08
I had so much looked forward to reading this book that when it arrived I was disappointed. The text was rather disorganised in places and so it was hard to follow the points the author was making about the early life and various influences upon Miriam Haskell. Most of the book was focused on one designer and most of the pictures, although they are very nice pictures, came from the same few sources. I was hoping for a carefully researched piece which told me a lot more about Haskell and gave a much wider assortment of the pieces she designed. The book left you asking more questions than it answered and wanting more variety then it presented.
Good information, beautiful pictures, interesting history........1998-05-10
I felt this book was worth the price. For the person interested in Miriam Haskell, her history, and the history of her company, it is quite good. I wanted some practical information, however, and that was not quite there. For instance, what kind of findings were used? How to tell a fake hang tag from a true one? These are some of the things that would make this book super useful. Additionally, only the top-of-the-line pieces were pictured. I would have liked to see some of the lower-end production for identification purposes. All in all, however, it was a very good book and well worth the price.
Book Description
Miriam Haskell began selling especially beautiful costume jewelry in 1926, and her company continues to the present. Today, the jewelry that bears her name is highly sought after and the prices keep spiraling up. Claims abound that "this is a Miriam Haskell," but is it a Miriam Haskell? This important new book gives collectors the key information to make intelligent buying decisions. It provides specific details on the art, design, style, materials, construction, and signatures, all vital to the identification and dating of Haskell jewelry. It also dispels many of the myths that allow "wanna-bes" and fakes to flourish. Over 600 beautiful color photographs display the most extensive collection of Haskell jewelry ever brought together. The jewelry is categorized by designer, specifying notable eras. The text provides notations on innovations, style preferences, and in-depth descriptions pointing to key Haskell identifiers. Readers, from casual admirers to serious collectors and dealers, will find in this comprehensive book the essential information and breathtaking pictures they seek. 8 1/2" x 11" 609 color Price guide

MIRIAM HASKELL JEWELRY (SCHIFFER BOOK).......2007-03-31
This is a fantastic resource book for the Vintage Jewelry Collector or Seller. It is wonderfully organized & beautifully illustrated with many large color pictures. The descriptions are concise & precise. Values are given after each description.
There is also a wonderful & informative section on Identifying & Dating Haskell Jewelry~vintage to present~including clasps & materials. This section also has clear close-up photographs.
I feel it is an invaluable tool for the serious collector. And well worth the investment!
Costume Jewelry at its best.......2006-09-09
Dealing with jewelry is both to me, profession and hobby. So I also like reading books about the stuff I love, and this one really got past my expectations. It helps getting insight not only in a really interesting branch of the jewelry business, but tells also about the people behind the design. At the same time, the author manages to give a helpful guide to the ambitioned collector of that kind. The book reminds one how much fun it is to create and wear exceptional pieces and tells some stories that are connected with those. The pictures are magnificent. This book is motivation for new ideas and simply fun to read.
Miriam Haskell Jewelry (Schiffer Book for Collectors(Hardcover)).......2005-07-12
This book is one of the finest that I have seen. The illustrations are beautifully done. You almost want to frame
the water colors. There is an interesting history of the
Miriam Haskell jewelry, and the descriptions of the jewelry are
well done. I highly recommend this book to any vintage jewelry collector, especially those of you who like the Haskell line.

Perfect gift for my Mother-in-Law.......2006-04-28
This is a hardcover scrapbook about 9.5" x 11" x 1" thick. The front of the hard cover has an oval cutout, so Grandmother can place a photo on the inside front of the first page. Inside it has 40 spiral bound pages, front and back, with an instruction page that can be ripped out once you catch on. Each 2 page topic has a place for photos and notes, already decorated with relevant pictures and designs. (I looked all over for the perfect book so I know details help!)
It's definitely a Christian book - a bible verse on every page, and very spiritually minded. Many of the topics involve a traditional family setting, including pages detailing Grandmother's love story and wedding, although only basics are mentioned about Grandchild's parents, so this book would suit a grandchild with a single mother nicely.
It is written so that you'd want to have a separate book for each child (so Mom-in-law will be getting another for baby #2). There are a couple pages that dicuss Grandchild's favorite things, like movies, books and games, as well as things they did and said. This book might be given from Grandmother to Grandchild at a milestone birthday, but not at birth.
I had to order it directly from Integrity Publishers, but it was cheaper and shipped quickly. I am more than pleased with this product.
My mom loves it.......2005-12-18
I gave this book to both my mother and mother-in-law last year and they really like them. My mother-in-law is not really a scrapbooker so ready-made format is perfect for her. My mom is a scrapper, but she still likes the ready-made one since she can work on it quickly when the mood strikes, without stressing about the right colours, or what to write. All three of us like the religious focus placed on memories of Christmas and Easter. My mom says she's not much of a journaler, but that it is easy with this format where the topics are there for you.

It is so important to scrapbook for many reasons.......2007-06-02
i really enjoyed this book - it was touching and real. It really allowed me to give myself the time to scap without feeling guilty. There is so much in this world to celebrate - the good and the bad and scrapbooking keeps our history going...
I would really recommend this book to anyone interested in scrapbooking.
Simply Inspiring!.......2006-08-08
Leeza uses her own personal stories to showcase her scrapbooking layouts. Her "idea starters" are terrific for stimulating our thoughts for journaling. The large colorful layouts allow us to read Leeza's personal narrative. Scrapbooking 101 sections summarize different issues important to the novice scrapbooker. Leeza's simple but beautiful layouts inspire us to honor our time with others.
A must-have for ALL scrapbookers!.......2004-12-08
I had never done scrapbooking before until my friend Leeza asked if I wanted to do a page for her book, 'Scrapbooking Traditions'. I was a little apprehensive at first until I started following the methods and tips laid out in Leeza's book. I couldn't believe how simple and helpful the tips were! I ended up putting together a nice scrapbook page that you can see in 'Scrapbooking Traditions'. Even for a first timer like me, Leeza's scrapbook tips and examples made scrapbooking fun and rewarding. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever considered scrapbooking.
PS/ Leeza didn't ask me to write this, I just have to let others know when I see a good and informative book!

Book Description
This book presents a collection of papers that give a comprehensive description of the major areas of research on the interactions between plants and their pathogens. State-of-the-art knowledge about research on microbial avirulence genes and plant resistance genes, about pathogenicity factors and signals for establishment of infection, about elicitors and intermediates in the signalling pathway, and about the genes involved in plant responses to pathogens and environmental stress is reviewed.
The different topics covered show that modern tools of plant cellular and molecular biology are now available to investigate very significant models of plant-pathogen interactions and to identify the molecular determinants of the two partners that trigger defence responses, the signals involved and the mechanism of their transduction, the spatial and temporal regulation of defence gene expression in relation to the spread or localization of the pathogen.
The first trials to exploit these results for enhancing plant resistance and crop field by biotechnology are presented. The book is a main reference source for research scientists and advanced students.

Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) wrote some of the loveliest and most touching popular music of the 20th century, from "Thou Swell" in A Connecticut Yankee through "Edelweiss" in The Sound of Music. He was half of the two most celebrated teams in American musical theater: Rodgers and Hart sparkled with the insouciant gaiety of the 1920s and '30s, while Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein forged a revolution with more serious, artistically unified productions like Oklahoma and The King and I. Meryle Secrest skillfully depicts Rodgers's glittering lifestyle and the complex personality hidden underneath the suave manner and elegant clothes. Born into an affluent but tension-riddled New York Jewish family, he was playing the piano at seven and had his first Broadway musical produced before 18. Life after that was a succession of hit shows, glamorous parties, famous friends, and lavish homes decorated by wife Dorothy, who turned a sophisticated blind eye to his affairs with pretty actresses. Theatrical colleagues recall Rodgers as amusing and charming, if not precisely warm; daughters Mary and Linda paint a darker picture of a hypercritical and sometimes cruel father enmeshed in a marriage he often found confining. Secrest hasn't anything very new to say about Rodgers's music, but she's written a perceptive biography of an intriguingly complicated man and a formidable creative artist. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Everywhere regarded as one of our most brilliant composers–more than nine hundred published songs, forty Broadway musicals, numerous films, every award conceivable–Richard Rodgers, the man, has nonetheless been consistently misunderstood –seen as the almost stolid opposite of what he really was.
Now Meryle Secrest–biographer of Frank Lloyd Wright, Stephen Sondheim, and Leonard Bernstein–brings her extraordinary skills to this full-scale life of Rodgers. She shows us for the first time the complexities of his nature, his emotional fault lines, and, most important, the wellsprings of his art.
She writes of his childhood and how he learned at an early age to mask his feelings, escaping into the world of operetta—of Franz Lehar and Jerome Kern. She follows his close and wonderfully productive working relationship with Lorenz Hart–a collaboration that resulted in more than thirty Broadway and West End musicals, including Babes in Arms and Pal Joey, but was ultimately undone by Hart’s drinking. She evokes Rodgers’s triumphant second collaboration, with the gifted–and happily stable–Oscar Hammerstein, which gave us Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and more. She explores Rodgers’s own problems with alcohol as well as his periodic breakdowns; and she illuminates the deep-rooted tensions that underlay his forty-nine-year marriage to Dorothy Feiner.
Somewhere for Me is both a lively portrait of the American musical theatre and a revelation of the brilliant, passionate, moody, and mercurial artist who was one of its greatest figures.

Capturing a Complex Man.......2006-06-21
This is a thorough and detailed biography of one of the three or four greatest composers of popular music of the 20th century. We will not see his like again.
Of course, one can not expect a book to capture a life. Especially a life as complex as was Richard Rodgers. But this book comes closest to lifting up the "curtain" and seeing behind the scenes. It obviously will not please everyone. But since it is a life of a particular person (not merely a composer) the focus is where it should be, on the man first and the music second. In his autobiography Mr. Rodgers explains that he can not account for his musical talents. But just a few pages earlier he describes how his older brother was closer to his father and that at the age of four he climbed up on the piano bench to try to please his operetta-loving mother. No wonder he wrote such beautiful waltzes. This book shines an unbiased light on Rodgers complexities and captures many of them.
There's No Business---.......2003-04-06
Richard Rogers is a hard nut to crack. Author Secrest does a workmanlike job of peeling back the layers, but can't quite reach the inner core that made Rogers the composer-genius he was. Rogers was urbane, witty, hypochondriacal, magnetizing, petty, alcoholic, competitive, gloomy, secretive, philandering and funny. How do all of these traits combine to bring about some of the most beautiful songs of the 20th century? Reading about Richard Rogers and then hearing -- say "You'll Never Walk Alone" from "Carousel" makes you exclaim (like Oprah), "How'd he DO that?"
Richard Rogers was born to a moderately wealthy Jewish family in New York City. He was composing music for the stage by the time he was seventeen. He had his first Broadway hit by the time he was 24, and after he partnered with Lorenz Hart produced one hit after another. In the meantime, he married the fragile beauty Dorothy, had two daughters and became increasingly wealthy. Sounds like a trip to the pinnacle, a stairway to the stars, doesn't it? Well, not exactly. Rogers and Hart broke up mainly because of Hart's alcoholism and mental fragility. But Rogers got the rap for "deserting" him and banning him from the theatre. This wasn't quite fair to Rogers, but it wasn't untrue either. Rogers' storybook marriage was complex also. Dorothy was a perfectionist and emotionally needy. Rogers' response was a parade of infidelity. And yet. I believe Rogers loved her all his life as much as he was able to love anyone, and she fulfilled some deep-seated need in him. As parents, they both were failures. The daughters were marginally fonder of Richard who they considered distant and savagely critical. Dorothy was seen as a selfish tyrant. The daughters' recollections are not kind. His last years were a combination of poor health, increasing alcoholism, and being out of touch with modern day musicals. Yet honors were heaped upon him and the money kept pouring in.
Ms. Secrest did a mountain of research, and it shows. She not only had the full cooperation of his daughters; they commissioned her to do the work. The book is well notated and indexed, and has a bibliography. She gives a fair and balanced accounting of a many-sided man. There are not many lighthearted moments, but Richard Rogers was not a lighthearted man.

Get a life.......2003-02-17
I was thoroughly disappointed in this book, which I found to be a dull recitation of facts. The author has little interest in the artistic side of Rodgers, which is--I presume--the reason why we would want to know more about him in the first place. I have a huge shelf of musical theater books, but this one isn't going to end up there.
As cold as its subject.......2002-11-18
An oddly cold biography. The author apparently has no particular love for her subject, his music, or for the musical theatre. She describes all three dispassionately, most likely getting her facts right and offering us occasional quotes from people who knew Rodgers. But the book itself never catches fire. I stayed with it to the end because I'm interested in the subject and not horrified by the fact that he may have been rather cold. But the book itself left me cold, which was a disappointment.
Disappointing with a capital "D".......2002-05-14
I'm in a good mood today, and feeling generous -- hence the two stars. Secrest learned that Rodgers could be a rotten person, that he drank and was a womanizer. She then proceeds to beat us over the head with it at great length. I didn't count the words, but it seemed like she spent more time on that then she did on Rodgers and Hammerstein -- not to mention the post-Hammerstein years. We learn nothing about how these shows came about and what happened to them beyond the most cursory; it's if her research there was limited to the notes on the cast albums. I've kept most of my theater books, except for this one. It went to the used book store.
