A Truly Excellent Account Of Recent History.......2005-12-21

I was privileged to hear Dr. Dolibois give a talk at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio several years ago and was impressed not only by his eloquence and capability as a speaker, but by the amazingly full life he's led in service to the United States, his adopted homeland. I wish this book would be re-issued by a publisher who was better able to publicize it and distribute it so that the tale of John Dolibois' life was better known. His stories of working as an interrogator and interpreter for the Allies at the Nuremberg trials (where he spent many hours in close contact with such Nazi leaders as Herman Goering) are not just remarkable tales, but part of the historical treasury of the American nation. A great book I highly recommend to anyone, and should be a "must read" for those interested in the Second World War, the Cold War, and our country's relations with the states of Europe.

A warm facinating life.......2002-08-01

I have the privilege of knowing Mr. Dolibois personally. I can tell you that he has had one of the most interesting lives I have ever heard. This book offers so much. The book's majority is about his interrogation of the top Nazi's after the war. It is important that he has documented this because his insights on these people are so important. Read this book.

Exceptional autobiography of a proud American........1998-11-24

John E. Dolibois' story of leaving his native Luxembourg and returning again during WWII provides fascinating glimpses of a life well lived. Of particular interest: memories of his assignment as a U.S. Army interrogation officer at the Nazi internment center (Mondorf, Luxembourg, aka "ASHCAN") during the summer of 1945. Mr. Dolibois interrogated dozens of the top Nazi political and military leaders. Really fascinating reading for anyone interested in the history of WWII. Mr. Dolibois later served as U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg - becoming the first U.S. Ambassador to serve as such in his native land.

Corporate Finance, Governance, and Business Cycles describes a model of how a financial system coordinates and shapes certain stylised facts of business cycles. The model is based on a conflict of interest between more risk averse bondholders, and less risk averse stockholders whose risk aversion changes over time. The corporate governance resolution of this conflict assigns the operating decisions of the firm to stockholders and the financing decisions to bondholders. Financing decisions are then linked to operating decisions in a way that coalesces the welfare of bondholders and stockholders over the business cycle. Evidence from the nonfinancial business sector of the G-7 countries does not reject the predictions of the model.

...is a great source of many of McCoy pieces. Good photos with year made, brief description and appraised value as of I believe 2004 (which still seems to be the going prices in 2007.) Book is divided into specific chapters: Cookie Jars, Crocks, Dinnerware, Experiments, Flower Pots, Jardinieres and Pedestals, Jars, Kitchenware, Lamps, Loy-Nel-Art, Misc. Pet Feeders, Planters, Signs, Vases and Flower Holders, Wall Pockets and Catalog covers.

Useless to collectors.......2007-10-10

The book states it is a price guide. The author had pictures of as many as 9 pieces being auctioned and vague discriptions of some with chips. Another example is a Donatello jardiniere (with chip repair) & pedestal $180-$220. A picture of a Donatello bud vase on the same page just over 6" is listed at $180-$220.Yet another jardinier on the same page (smaller than the one that includes the pedestal with a rim chip is $200-$250.Auction prices for multiple pieces & damaged items need to be kept separate.

Warman's Roseville Pottery.......2006-09-05

I am not happy with my recent purchase of Warman's Roseville book. It does not provide a complete listing of suggested prices and many of the pictured pieces are described with damage along with a price. For example, hanging basket with "chip on handle." For a serious collector the book is not of much use and for the inexperienced collector the book is misleading--damaged pieces do not sell for anything close to what mint pieces sell for.

Great Beginner Collector's Guide.......2005-07-13

Great book for a quick overview on Roseville pottery, the different patterns and price ranges. Not a complete book but a good quick reference for those just starting to collect.

buy this for the beautiful color photos!.......2004-07-15

Though by no means a complete showing of every shape made for each design, it IS a very generous sampling of each design, with beautiful studio photographs cover to cover. That makes it a must-have for any Roseville lover- none of the ugly black and white catalogue page reprints. NOT so great for pricing information. The pieces are priced with their existing blemishes, which would make a perfect piece of the same design worth ?? how much ?? Also has price listed for the whole set, if the photo includes more than one piece. That is just not helpful when you want to put a value on one piece.
If not for the vague pricing information, I would rate this 5 stars- especially compared to other Roseville guides. Very helpful visuals in this one!

A Coffee Table Book, Not a book for collectors.......2007-07-06

July 5th 2007. Another "overview" book from Warman's. It states updated prices, but there are only prices for what is shown. I'm not sure how useful updated prices would be when you need a price on a piece not included in the book. There are some Roseville lines that are not included.

On the other hand, the photography is the best. The colors and details are amazing, which would make it a great coffee table book or gift.

For collectors; The Bomm book (2004), Mollring's 11th edition book (2006)(B&W pics only), Bassett's Prices book, Bassett's Introducing book and Bassett's Understanding book are the most comprehensive.

I found the book a little disappointing. The format did not suit me. I would have liked patterns included for the pictures in the book. There seemed to be a lot of empty spaces.

A complex craft made very clear.......2003-11-28

What a wonderful book... Doubleweave is a beautifully presented course in the art and science of multi layered cloth. It begins with a history of the technique dating back at least 3,000 years and continuing through the great design houses of Europe in the last century. Modern examples of textile art illustrate techniques throughout the book.

A technique primer explains aspects of loom setup that have special considerations for double weave. The bulk of the text is devoted to technique and the specific arrangement of threads that produce multiple layers. This is where the book really shines. Several chapters are devoted to specific methods of interlocking layers: color blocks, stripes and spots, tubular and extra wide cloth, stitched, stuffed, pleated, and gathered textures usually associated with sewing. Each technique is thoroughly and clearly explained through the threading and treadling and the resulting effect. Each explanation is accompanied by a 3D diagram of the cloth extended from the drawdown, clearly showing the interlocking of warp and weft. The diagrams require a little concentration because of the complexity of the weave, but a little time spent on the charts will reward you with a thorough understanding of the structure.

The textile photographs that illustrate the techniques show a variety of yarn texture and size, sett, and color that would make even tabby weaves extraordinary. A chapter on textile design from inspiration to execution rounds out the technical information. With the fascinating cloth presented in Doubleweave, suddenly 8 shafts don't seem like enough. I borrowed this book from my guild library and read it cover to cover; it is now being added to my home collection as a valuable reference and source of inspiration.

Cradle of Anglo-Rock History.......2005-08-11

A fascinating book about the inception of the Beatles, or "pre-Beatle" era, if you will. The beautiful archival photographs will certainly delight all readers as well as the memorabilia. Readers will certainly get a feel for early-1960s Liverpool (1960-62) and the environment in which the Beatles flourished.

Thanks to this book, fans can actually see the club where the Beatles' fame was soon launched. The world's number one band cut their musical teeth in the Casbah, owned and run by drummer Pete Best's mother, Mona Best. The club opened in 1959 when the Quarrymen-Silver Beatles were coming into their own. This underground rock club was the precursor to its American counterparts such as the Hard Rock Cafe and the Fillmore East and Fillmore West, to name three.

This fresh perspective of Beatle history includes Mona Best's story as well as other members of the Best family. Pete Best, the Beatles' first drummer was unceremoniously ousted from the band in August of 1962. Ringo Starr replaced him and the rest is, well, history. Fans will undoubtedly feel as if they are watching the Beatles evolve from relative local obscurity into the musical juggernaut they became and remain to this day.

A Dream Book.......2004-02-24

I love this book! Makes me want to fly to Liverpool now and visit. Pete Best, who was drummer for the Beatles before they kicked him out with no explanation, gives us a fabulous treat. His mother ran the Casbah Club in Liverpool in the family home's basement. After Pete was booted out, the club sort of died down and was closed. It remained sealed up for many, many years, until it was opened. Original murals done by the Beatles still on the walls, microphones, and other items were found, and the club reopened to people who wish to come and see the only remaining original club, with even the original walls! Let the Cavern try to claim that! Color photos, inside stories, more make this a sensational book. Beatle fans, Merseybeat fans, music historians, Scousers, etc...BUY IT!

Neil Aspinall's son with Mona Best.......2003-09-16

The story behind this book is one of the secrets in the Beatles tale. Neil Aspinall, who still works for the Beatles as director of Apple Corps, looking after their legacy and business interests, classmate of Paul McCartney's at the Liverpool Institute, was Pete Best's good friend. When the band needed someone to help them move their equipment from gig to gig, Neil was hired because he had a car. Throughout the band's story, Neil was the road manager.

Neil lived with Pete's family for a while in the early years. He had an affair with Pete and brother Rory's hip, relatively young, Indian mother, Mona. They had a child together, Roag.

When Pete was tossed out of the Beatles, he told Neil to choose between the job with the band and his living with the Best family. Neil chose the Beatles. He was not allowed to see his son grow up.

This is that son's book.

An Unfocused Book with Two Slender Ideas.......2003-07-26

Will any true Beatles fan ever admit that there is no need for any further information regarding the Fab Four? Absolutely not --- the strong popularity of THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is evidence enough that a voracious audience still exists for Beatles lore in all shapes and sizes.

THE BEATLES: THE TRUE BEGINNINGS really encompasses two book ideas: the Merseybeat music scene in Liverpool from which the Beatles developed, and Pete Best's experiences as an early Beatle. Either of these ideas, developed fully, would make interesting reading. As they are, however, two slender ideas are crammed into one unfocused book with big pictures and sparse text. Even so, I get the impression that this book was a stretch --- does any fan, no matter how obsessive, really require a picture of the case in which Pete Best carried his drums? How about a shot of the spare guitar strings he found inside?

A prominent outpost of the Merseybeat scene was Mrs. Best's Casbah Coffee Club, owned and operated by Pete Best's mother, Mona Best. This book is in large part a tribute to the remarkable Mona Best from her sons --- Roag, Pete, and Rory. Mrs. Best pawned her jewelry, placed a bet on a horse, and won the money to buy Number Eight Haymans Green, a giant house whose cellars were transformed into the Casbah when the Best boys discovered rock-and-roll and needed a place to perform and listen to music. The Beatles first performed at the Casbah as the Quarrymen. They played to a crowd of 1,500 and received three pounds as payment.

You probably know how the story goes. The Beatles were a huge success and got a gig playing in Hamburg, Germany where they endured a horrible, grueling performance schedule and living conditions like something from a Dickens novel (assuming Dickens might ever have written about a German red-light district). In short, the Hamburg experience was destined to make or break the Beatles. It made the Beatles, but Pete Best was not invited to continue their success.

Is the Best family bitter? Maybe a little; it is their theory that Pete Best was simply so much better looking that he was a liability to the other band members. Also, the title THE TRUE BEGINNINGS seems to imply that they are setting the record straight, but there isn't very much new information here and it's unlikely to change anyone's mind about the Beatles as individuals or as a cultural phenomenon.
