Spend an afternoon in your attic, basement, or garage-and travel back to a simpler time. Just touching your grandmother's diamond ring or your grandfather's fedora brings back beloved memories, connecting you to a past you may not even remember but will always cherish.
The stories in this latest collection from The Rocking Chair Reader document the blessings that we enjoy when we rediscover the goodness of the timeless treasures tucked away in the corners of our homes, such as:
A dusty old trophy brings back the memory of a town Halloween costume parade
The Rocking Chair Reader: Memories from the Attic will remind you why you've kept so many things for so long-and will bring you back to the happiest times in your own life and in your family's precious history.
Customer Reviews:
A heartwarming must-read..........2005-04-29
The Rocking Chair Reader: Memories from the Attic is the kind of book that makes you want to read it again. The beauty of a short story is its ability to steal you away from your own troubles for a little while, and this book does this in a unique way so that not only are you stolen, but you are also welcomed to travel through your own memories and family stories, secrets you thought you had forgotten. Several of the stories also have interesting profiles of the towns where the stories were set.
(I made a list of the towns that I would like to visit.)
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because I wanted more stories to be included, more opportunities for me to reminisce. My Mother, who also has a copy, said that it was "just perfect how it is".
Speaking of perfection, my favorite story in this collection is "Single Shot .22", Carbon Raines' latest short story. She has dazzled me again; I'm always excited to see her work in print.
The Bottom Line: This is an excellent work of literature and would be a wise addition to any home library.
(Not to mention what a great gift it would be for family members who are partial to small town America!)

Book Description
A collection of reflections on the wisdom and grace that we need to lead healthy, happy lives rooted in the teaching of Jesus Christ. These stories from Father Philip M. Kanfush provide a framework for illustrating life's lessons and the opportunities for spiritual growth that can result from being attentive to the voice of God in the surprisingly ordinary moments of daily life. Beginning with the choices we make each day and progressing through brief essays on "coming home" to the Lord, the power of God's love working in our lives and more, these reflections provide practical wisdom, gleaned from both Scripture and contemporary life, which can be easily applied in our daily lives. Softcover, 262 pages.
Customer Reviews:
Divine insight through human examples.......2005-04-12
I knew Father Kanfush and his family some 15 years ago when he worked at Community College of Allegheny County. (Long before he became a priest) So for me, the stories of his Mother, Father and many sisters are wonderful and true to each person. They are a beautiful family and Phillip is an extraordinary man.
This book is beautifully written and easy to read as it ties the divine with the human. It is a collection of 1 to 3 page parables from Phillips personal experiences. It focuses on the lessons we can learn, and the questions we can ask ourselves when things happen. It illustrates how we can become better people by just being mindful of the grace in every day life.
His personal experiences are eloquently expressed and follow how they shaped his faith and his life. This is done without being too esoteric or lofty. You can read them and relate so well with his experience. It is very human.
I do recommend this to anyone of any faith. The truths are universal and the stories are touching, humorous, and insightful.
This is a beautifully crafted book with a "down to earth" quality that is transcended with the spiritual. I recommend it highly!
Excellent and Unique.......2005-01-29
The author's use of personal stories gives the reader the rare opportunity to witness the twists and turns of the another's relationship with God. The use of these everyday, seemingly ordinary situations, puts into perspective the extraordinary presence of God in our lives each day.
The reflections are brief (no more than three pages), powerful, thought-provoking and quite readable. I recommend this excellent and unique work without hesitation.

Customer Reviews:
Smart!.......2006-04-19
This is a great book written with talent and skill smart. I recommend this book to anybody who is considering the stock trade. Cleverly written.
Sour Grapes.......2003-05-02
Four out of five brokers do not last five years. That is why the "salesmen" get weeded from the people who have their clients interests at heart. The author is one who got weeded out. Good ideas to protect yourself from salesmen, but the indictment of the industry is overdone. Brokers do make their living from commissions, but cheating clients is not the way to build a practice. Best advice: Find someone who got past the wash-out phase.
Excellent description of how Merrill Lynch operates.......1999-06-02
In the Preface of his book, Mark Dempsey states, "Out of fairness, however, I have withheld the name of the brokerage firm that I worked for." Elsewhere he mentions that his previous job was selling radio advertising time. A check of the NASD list of past and present brokers includes a "Mark Dempsey" who, between 1992 and 1995 worked for Merrill Lynch in Dallas, TX. Prior to that, between 1985 and 1992, this "Mr. Dempsey" held sales positions with five different radio stations or networks. Coincidence?
Excellent--read it more than once.......1998-09-15
I was all set to review this a few days ago, but since I had read it quite awhile ago, I decided to re-read it. Am I ever glad I did! I do not like all the "broker bashing" that goes on. I must be the only person left on the planet that does not think full-service brokers are the devil incarnate. HOWEVER, I did see my broker in some of these examples. Surprise! Surprise! (He's the Master of the Pregnant Pause). This book is required reading for anyone about to invest. I do not believe it is as easy as a lot of people say it is to invest on your own--and I say that after reading piles of books. I say watch your broker like a hawk and keep this book handy as a reference. (By the way, the first time I read it I thought it was so good I bought a copy for the library where I work at my own expense). Please write more books like this one.
Investors get inside scoop on stockbrokers.......1998-08-26
Pretty decent book on how stock brokers really operate. Shows how your interests are rarely (if ever) important to a broker. The book is a fairly quick read. Several examples of sales techniques followed by an analysis of each. At the end the author suggests that each of us is better off investing our money ourselves but does not give any additional information on how to do this other than the general comment of going to a bookstore and buying books on investing/personal finance. The author does a good job of not only criticizing the brokerage industry but also offers suggestions on how it can be approved. Overall I would say that it covers the topic well and opens the readers eyes.

Customer Reviews:
I have seen better, but I have seen worse!.......2002-01-31
I just bought 4 different books on collecting bottles and the one thing this book has that the others do not, is lots of pictures. This REALLY helps especially when you are a beginning collector like myself. The descriptions are a bit short (for example, in other books they tell you size and color of the specific bottle) while this one usually does not go into that amount of detail. But for [price], this book really surprised me. I have to say that even though it does have its downfalls in lack of detail, it makes up for it by its pictures. And trust me, I have 3 other books and they probably contain an average of 20 pictures per book. This one has about 3-4 pictures every other page. I do not recommend this book if you are looking for just ONE reference to go by but if you are buying it as a companion reference, I highly recommmend it.
Lots of listings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-04-19
I was impressed with the almost 4,000 bottles listed in this book. I was disappointed, however, in the limited number of pictures the author used. Several were very difficult to see and the descriptions were rather vague. The book is small enough in size to be taken along when shopping for old bottles and I find this to be very helpful. In the front of the book there are very brief tips on identifying, buying and selling bottles. I found these tips to be short but informative. I am only a novice to bottle collecting but I think this book would be good for a beginner or a veteran collector. My favorite feature of this book is its compact size. I like the fact that I can easily take it with me when I go shopping for bottles.

The toys that surround children during their first five years are essential tools for awakening imaginations and creativity. From many years of experience as a kindergarten teacher, Freya Jaffke makes helpful suggestions for adults who wish to select age-appropriate toys for children. She also shows how to make a variety of toys. There are sections on the meaning of play, stages of play, outdoor play, and how to help children play.
This greatly expanded edition is an excellent handbook for all parents of young children.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book.......2006-02-18
This is a really great book on how to mkae simple, and some not so simple toys for children. Most of them are just beautiful as well.
Overall....pretty good.......2005-08-16
This book gives good ideas for toys to make at home and gives some good description of children's play at different stages. The main problem I have is that I have never carved wood and there are no directions on how to actually carve. I would like to make some of the wooden toys, but I will need to do more research beyond this book to actually be able to carve the wooden toys. So, I guess I'm saying, if you have a base knowledge in sewing and carving, this book is very good....if not, you will need to do some other research in addition to this book.
Directions for Waldorf-style toys and more..........2000-11-24
This book is a revised and expanded edition of the original book titled "Making Soft Toys" which was published in 1981. The author is a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher. This book discusses the importance of play as seen through a Waldorf education perspective and explains that natural playthings from nature and toys made from natural products are important. The book opens with several essays on the subject of the value of play and the nature of (appropriate) play as seen through the eyes of a Waldorf educator. Simple toys that allow imaginative and creative play are defined as ideal and appropriate for the proper development of the child. The author states that toys made by hand are more appreciated by children and she urges parents to make toys by hand, with the child's help or the child watching. A listing of toys appropriate for different age groups is listed. Discussion about outdoor play, play with dolls, and clean up time is included. Full instructions for over 45 toys are provided. Toys include dolls and doll clothing, knitted animals, wooden playstands and cloths, wooden tree blocks, and carved wooden toys (bridges, animals, spoons, etc.). Using wool roving is explained and instructions for creating pictures with plant-dyed wool end the book. The book is 93 pages long and the instructions are detailed and illustrated with line drawings. If you enjoy crafts and want to make Waldorf-style toys, this book is a must and a good value. Of course you can buy many of these toys already made, but you would save a lot of money by making these yourself.
Not just toymaking plans!.......2000-06-28
I recieved this book and really couldn't be more pleased! It begins by describing the purpose of play, and shows us how to best implement positive play in children's lives. It lists some toys that are appropriate for each age group and goes on to describe how to make a number of toys. The ideas i found to be very enlightening, and I so look forward to making some of these wonderful toys! Oh and this book has a waldorf slant to it. An excellent find!

TOPS ~Building & Experimenting with Spinning Toys.......2002-09-19
I thought this Book was GREAT!! I Spent Playtime hours with my Two Children Creating and Building Tops. We Made some Great ones. They didn't need me there because the projects are simple. But the time spent making them together was PRICELESS.
disappointing.......1999-11-08
There are some good ideas here, but the materials used to make the tops (mainly pencils and paper plates) are bulky and too big for young children to spin.

Iris Krasnow is back with her third tribute to the art of personal commitment, Surrendering to Yourself, a book that focuses on the importance of making life choices that lead to greater fulfillment. Those familiar with Krasnow's work will by now understand that her concept of "surrender" is slightly different than the norm; what she urges repeatedly with this book is for people to return to the activities that have brought them the most joy in the past. Previous titles (Surrendering to Motherhood and Surrendering to Marriage) were aimed specifically at women, and while this is written from the same perspective, it is broader in scope, with a central message that appeals equally to both genders. Inspirational interviews range from a CEOs with a passion for flying to the Yom Kippur sermon of Krasnow's rabbi, and while the topic at hand is often the author's personal search, it is no less meaningful to those who have not been stay-at-home moms. Gently different from more directly instructional manuals, Krasnow reminds us that, "However compelling these texts are and insightful the scribes are, in the end it is you, and it is I, who must figure out things for ourselvesour values, aspirations, the meaning of integrity". She's not about to provide a precise list leading to these discoveriesinstead, she'll inspire you to get started on your own list. --Jill Lightner

Spoke to my soul.......2003-10-02
This book spoke to my soul. It came to me at a time when I was at a crossroads in so many levels of my life. Even though I am only 28, have not had children yet and haven't had the same amount of life experience as Iris, I related to so much of what she writes about. I found peace, liberation and an insight into my own truth in this book.
Disappointing.......2003-08-01
I enjoyed Krasnow's first book, "Surrendering to Motherhood," but can't say this one is worth reading. It goes on and on about....nothing.
Here are some of the things that make Krasnow happy and help her to rediscover who she is: Working out with her trainer, getting away to the beach without her husband or kids, drinking coffee in her peaceful riverfront kitchen and feeling sorry for the poor souls who have to fight traffic to get to work at dawn, going away to an expensive sleepaway camp with her sons, and driving her shiny, sporty Ford Escape that reminds of her being young, carefree and childfree (she uses an additional car to tote the boys around town).
For those of us without the luxury of time, a third personal car, a personal trainer, a rich husband, etc, it will be a little more difficult to re-discover our souls. We're too busy paying bills, working, trying to find the time to spend with our children, friends and husbands.
Amazing book.......2003-05-07
I am awestruck...not because the book is terrific but because some people have figured out (or found agents who've figured out) how to write books about incredibly obvious things -- and make a handsome living at it. Furthermore, I love it when rich people tell me to put my feet up and savor the "good life," a life they probably wouldn't be able to savor themselves if they didn't get handsome checks for writing dreck like this. I haven't learned this much from a book since Suze Orman told me to look behind the sofa cushions for spare change.
wow! what a book!.......2003-04-08
This book is not a list of instructions to happiness. Rather, it is a visit with an old friend. Learn that all along you hold the key to your happiness. I savored each page, you will too!
I savored each page!.......2003-04-06
This is not the type of book so popular now. Iris does not offer step-by-step instructions to happiness. And, I cannot think of one profound message from the book; rather, I have gained a whole new appreciation of ME and the life I have made for myself. This book introduces you to folks that know exactly how to put into words all the magic that life has to offer. So many times I thought to myself, "I knew that!" If you want to be validated and want to feel like you are reuniting with your best friend (yourself), this is your book. Definitely one of the best books you will ever encounter. Go for it!

Book Description
It is the first analytical, serious and uncensored look at Christina's life and her rise to the pinnacle of the pop world. A controversial and elusive figure, Christina Aguilera has polarized and mesmerized audiences since the beginning. While fans praise her sultry, soulful voice, a growing contingent of detractors finds her whole persona tacky. Even other artists, including Eminem have openly proclaimed their dislike of her; and her idol, Mariah Carey, refused to talk to her. Love her or hate her, Christina's success is without precedent. Millions and millions of her albums sold worldwide. It seems that everything she touches turns platinum. In Christina Aguilera: A Star is Made, author Pier Dominguez traces the construction of a 21st century star and provides a shrewd, psychological portrait - the first analytical look at her life and rise to the pinnacle of the pop world. This biography reveals Christina Aguilera in a most intimate light, chronicling her early years, exploring her motivations and tracing the development of her career. It strips away the media hoopla and exposes the Real Christina. Christina Aguilera: A Star is Made gives you all the details about how Christina fled her abusive father at age 5; cut out her first manager and later refused to give her credit; dropped her first boyfriend as her fame was reaching its most glorious crescendo; became the puppet of her record label, which attempted to downplay her ethnicity and helped her keep her romantic life secret and fired the manager who took her to the top of the charts. After an almost two-year hiatus, and after having her stardom carefully constructed by the RCA label, Christina has come back with an album "Stripped" that is almost entirely her own creation. The question Dominguez provocatively poses is, "Will she shine as brightly on her own?"
Customer Reviews:
Lots of info - Pretty good.......2005-09-21
Has lots of information about song releases and dates etc. Lots of quotes by Christina also.
Goes into quite a lot of depth in some places that maybe didn't need to, but otherwise is an easy read.
He did a good job showing fans how Christina's career started and the good and bad things that happened to her along the way.
I have no problems reccomending this book. It's a good guide to Christina, just a shame it wasn't authourised by her.
Best Christina Bio!.......2005-04-30
This is a great Christina autobiography! It's up to date, informative & entertaining. Me, being a huge fan, I had to get it & I'm glad I did. She went from teen sensation to pop music icon with her phenomenal vocals, flamboyant fahsions, sassy attitude & impressive performance skills. This is the Dirrty Diva's story!
Good book.......2004-01-02
This is the first and only current biography of one of pop music's most controversial ladies, Christina Aguilera. I recieved this book as a Christimas present and eagerly devoured it in two days. I found it to be a quick, yet balanced and imformative biography. The book itself isn't one of those fan guides stuffed with pictures- it's more like a behind-the-scenes look at Christina Aguilera's life up to 2003. In it, you'll find information about her early years singing, her days on The Mickey Mouse Club, her determination to become a singing star, how she got a record deal, the story behind Christina's transformation from a sweet innocent girl to an independant young woman, the story behind her controversial romance with Jorge Santos, and much, much more. This book does not always chronicle Christina as a perfect robot, it shows us that she has faults and feelings, too. You'll even get to read about the making of "Lady Marmelade" and Christina and Britney's "rivalry." This book allows you to take a peek and see what Christina's life really is as a pop star. If you are looking for a detailed, up-do-date, intimate, and well-researched biography of Christina Aguilera, this would be the book to turn to.
A wonderful Christina Aguilera biography.......2003-08-03
Before buying this book, be aware that this is not your average biography of a pop singer. Pier Dominguez has written a well-researched, detailed, up-to-date and intimate biography of one of pop music's biggest superstars, Christina Aguilera. The book is filled with interesting information and anecdotes about Christina Aguilera, covering her life up to late 2002. It covers topics that those glossy fan books do not, including the abusive tactics of Christina's father, information about the Britney/Christina rivalry, intimate details about Christina's ex-boyfriend Jorge Santos, the complete story of Christina firing her longtime manager Steve Kurtz, and so much more. If you want a book that exposes the media hoopla and tells the truth about Christina's life, then this is the perfect book for you.
Excellent.......2003-06-09
Biographies of singers are suppose to be short, quick, exciting, yet informative and straight to the point...Just as its publicity states, this is certainly NOT one of your average short, to the point, insta-biographies that have become so popular. It chronicles the rise of a star while demonstrating how the music industry constructed Aguilera. In the best tradition of the thorough, unauthorized biography, this book is more than the life of the star.

fixing my mistakes.......2006-06-16
Manfred Kirchheimer was my great grand father's nephew. So naturally being Jewish I'm very interested in the Holocaust. I read the family book, and loved it. When i was younger I would just flip through the photos, and look at all the people I knew. But now I've read it numerous times, seen the film, and have the poster in my room. I think that just like the other books about the Holocaust, and jewish history are great. Hard to believe the horrible thing Hitler did happend nearly 60 years ago.

The people interviewed don't represent all German Jews.......1998-05-03
I came to the U.S. in 1940 at age 13, a Jewish refugee from Munich, Germany, and spent most of the first year here in Washington Heights, attending PS 189 on 189th Street. I find that the people interviewed in the book fail to mention the economic depression that gripped Germany as much as it did the U.S. from 1929 on. I still remember accompanying my mother to a soup kitchen every day during the Summer of 1932 for our only sustenance. The economy was as much a cause for the election of Hitler in 1933 as it was for FDR at the same time. It seems that the pople interviewed in the book were not really representative of all German Jews, for there was a significant number of lower middle class families suffering economically as we were. At the same time, I found the exaggerated recollections of the Washington Heights refugees very characteristic of the people I knew there, including many of my relatives. It was, of course, natural to look back on the "good old days" in Germany vis-a-vis the difficult life in New York, and the title of the book is extremely well chosen in characterizing the refugees' warm, but false recollections of life before Hitler. We were NEVER beloved!
