Helping Caregivers Cope.......2007-04-09
For those with no personal experience with Alzheimer's, Dorothy Snyder's book is enlighting and uplifting. To those caregivers who struggle with the herculean tasks imposed by this horrible disease, this book brings hope and heartfelt compassion. Mrs. Snyder's book shines with her devotion to her husband and simultaneously details the daily demands that caregivers must face. Her insights and observations offer support and guidance to those who must negotiate this torturous journey with a loved one.
Even Experience Caregivers can learn from this one........2004-06-25
I found Dorothy Snyder's book to be extremely interesting and helpful. Even though I am a caregiver of 5 years to my father-in law who has this disease, I have yet to experience the very last days. This book helped me to "forsee" what awaits me ahead and has helped me to better prepare for those days. At the same time, I found that many of the techniques she used while caring for her husband are the same ones that I currently use to take care of my father-in-law. I was surprised to see that these techniques works for others like they have for me. A very good read!!
Touching & Tender--A Great Help for Caregivers.......2004-06-21
Dorothy's experience of caring for her beloved husband with Alzheimer's Disease will help others who are starting the caregiving journey for a loved one with dementia. Although the specifics of each caregiver's journey vary, the common element is the roller coaster of emotions that caregivers experience, yet they feel they are the only ones going through it. You will identify with the love, the frustration, the sorrow and the small joys, which non-caregivers can't truly understand until they are there. This book will help you cope and make you feel less alone with your own unique situation.

Book Description
There is no other single reference book in print that offers the vast scope of patterns identified, discussed, pictured, and priced in Mauzy's Depression Glass, 4th edition. It is the best identification and price guide for American and Canadian Depression glass, Fire-King, and fifties glassware and offers even more in this fourth edition: more measurements, more reproduction information, more pieces and patterns identified for the first time, and more current and accurate values. Hundreds of new, professionally executed photographs are presented with captions assisting in identifying thousands of pieces of glass in over 160 patterns. Barbara and Jim Mauzy are known for their accurate, user-friendly books and this volume confirms their ability to deliver what dealers and collectors want and need to buy and sell glassware. Reproductions are clearly marked, accurately described, and often photographed. Measurements are provided in inches rather than ounces, and often heights as well as diameters are provided. An extensive index of names and nicknames is included. Dozens of dealers and collectors have collaborated with the Mauzys, offering insight and guaranteeing accuracy. If you buy, sell, or admire American and Canadian glassware from the late 1920s-1950s, this is the one book you must own.

Never Enough Information to Learn about Depression Glass.......2007-05-08
My wife is a very active collector of all types, manufacturers, styles and colors of depression glass. Over the years she has become quite proficient in her knowledge but always appreciates a good authoritive up to date source of pricing, photo and description. This photographic reference along with pricing has been a welcomed addition to her book collection. The book is very well done with clear photos and good product descriptions. Pricing will always be difficult to lock down in print as prices vary from region to region but as a reference source to see what direction and what pace the pieces are moving in value as compared to earlier editions of pricing guides, this book does well. I would see this book in the hands of both an experienced collector as well as someone just starting out to enjoy this facinating type of collectible. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained from this book.
Mauzy's Depression Glass: A photographic reference with prices.......2007-04-02
I thought the pictures were very clear and the details sharp. I liked the general layout of the text.
Only 5 star collector book I've seen! Just super!.......2006-01-31
Wow, is this a mature book. It covers nearly every pattern I've run into, gives a good history and overview of nearly every one, has realistic prices, lists each piece, identifies and describes (yes, describes) how individual reproduction pieces can be spotted. The patterns are listed alphabetical.
The only way I'd improve on it (and this goes for all these books) is adding a little cross-referencing between similar patterns. I've had to write in the book "similar patterns: ..., ..., ...".
Mauzy's Depression Glass: A Photographic Reference And Price Guide.......2005-07-20
I have purchased many books in the past on depression glass, antiques, 40's, 50's and 60's era. But this book is my far the best written, best photos and gives the best details I have yet to see. I will be looking for others done by this author as well. I was suprise to see all the information that was put into this. Absolutely recommend for any antique dealer or collector of any type of glassware.
Best glass book ever.......2001-07-15
This book is the Best!!!!!!!! The pictures are clear and the patterns are easily identifiable. The authors show reproductions right next to old pieces to show the differences clearly between the two. I can't wait for more. Lets hope they continue to do more books on depression glass.

Inspiring and delightful.......2007-09-08
I have to admit that, despite a few flaws, this remains one of my favorite books on making your own glass. Ms. Eberle has written a book that gets my creative juices flowing every time I read it. Her approach to creating functional/decorative glass is (or was at the time) unique, and I especially appreciate her use of mass-produced glassware to create some really beautiful things. It's well-illustrated.
That said, there are some frustrating aspects to this book. She doesn't really explain where to find some of the materials she uses, such as her "paints" and "crystal ice." While I can guess at their identity I can't be quite sure. I've also tried to locate the author (and in fact have sent several e-mails to what I *think* is the correct address) with no luck. She does describe the mechanics of full-fuse firing, but you'll need a pretty good understanding of firing schedules to fill in the blanks.
Even with the frustrations, though, this book is well worth the purchase price. I would love to see more from this author!
Great fusing book.......2007-04-27
I have been fusing for 3 years now. I started with this book and still look back and get good ideas. You evolve and still can get something on a different level. Buy it.
Good fusing book!.......2007-01-04
Great pictures. Lots of projects. Good adition to any fusing book collection.
Encouraging start up.......2002-04-18
With no experience in glass work, this book is very encouraging for the beginner. Exercises are simple and clear to understand.
But I find the content of the projects very kitch, especially the finished works in the painting on glass section. I would have preferred if the creative quality be of far greater substance.
I am comming from an art/design profession, so the designs are not inspiring to me at all. Its approach may be too sunday hobbiest for practicing artists/designers.
Pretty but shallow.......2002-01-18
I bought this book based on reviews from this page. I agree that the projects are beautiful and the artist very talented. The book is not really a "how to" in my opinion as it gives very sketchy technical information on all three glass techniques. I would not feel comfortable investing in an expensive kiln and supplies or attempting these projects without reading a far more thorough treatment of the subject first. It is very inspirational to look at: pretty but shallow.

Book Description
Now available in paper for the first time, this classic work presents a a structured, rigorously tested, six-stage strategy for improving intimate relationships. Therapists and counselors will benefit from practical, step-by-step guidance for deciding how, why, and when to employ such widely cited Stuart techniques as "caring days," communication improvements, behavioral contracting, the "powergram" procedure for decision making, and conflict containment. These techniques not only provide a program for identifying and producing positive behavior change, but give the therapist the tools to assess therapeutic outcome and empirically validate the efficacy of change. A new preface to the paperback edition situates the book within the contemporary couple therapy landscape and reflects on the continuing evolution of the author's approach.

Needs moderization.......2001-10-18
This book contains SOME very helpful information, but the info is simply not well organized or very readable, i.e., specifically, it could truly use a wholesale re-editing & modernization of its presentation and content. Over 20 yrs. have passed since the book's publication, and most of the material would benefit substantially from a comptemporary presentation with "reader appeal" in mind, fresh examples, inclusion of a section on the important topic of rebuilding of trust (after extramarital affair/s), etc. This relatively expensive book is really boring, unexciting, and somewhat lacking in content, as is. That's a shame!

Book Description
It's a little-known fact that Elvis Presleythe most Christian icon of American pop culturewas Jewish. This book provides a behind-the-scenes account of the authors' search, from Israel to Graceland, to find the true roots of the King. With the help of a Hasidic Jewish Elvis impersonator, Dan Hartel, who performs at senior citizens' homes under the stage name "Schmelvis," and an eccentric Orthodox rabbi named Reuben Poupko, the authors trace Elvis's Jewish roots all the way to Israel.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2003-11-21
I expected more from the author, as he has proven himself to be an excellent essayist on This American Life. Maybe I would have liked it more if I hadn't already heard some of his better material.
Elvis was not Jewish........2003-06-02
To be Jewish one most either convert or, at a minimum, have a Jewish mother. Elvis did not have a jewish mother. Elvis was not a convert. Elvis was a Christian. He may have had a great-great-grandmother who was Jewish but that does not make one a Jew. The authors obviously had far too much free time on their hands.
who would have guessed it?.......2002-06-25
I just finished reading Schmelvis, and, it really is a funny, clever little book. It's totally not your run-in-the-mill novel-- it reads like a travel log, with little tidbits from all the characters, and you really get to know them. It's sort of an anti-novel-- a story in search of a story. The characters are so hilariously believable, that you totally believe they have no idea what they're doing or thinking. It's got dialogues from the film, and the director's notes, and random other stuff, like an appendix called "who's who of famous jews." The book totally takes on this distinct personality-- like it's not about elvis presley at all, and not about a static answer, but more about the journey, the getting there. most of all, it made me laugh. i didn't really know what to expect when i picked it up, but this book is totally cool. haven't seen the film yet, but i totally want to now.
Hilarious!.......2002-05-22
This books is really, really funny. Not really about Elvis' Jewish roots but more of a quest for identity. Composed of script bits from the film's (of the same name) production, entries in journals, and little anecdotes about the cast and crew, this book is really the funniest book I've ever read. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Country Rock, as played by the Byrds, the Eagles, and The Flying Burrito Brothers, was the dominant style in American music during the 1970s. But the artistically fertile relationship between rock and country music has-since their first encounter in the 1950s-been uneasy and often explosive. Are You Ready for the Country traces their tumultuous history and introduces us to all the main personalities-from pioneers like Hank Williams and Elvis Presley, through icons such as Gram Parsons and Johnny Cash, to superstars like Neil Young and Willie Nelson, and today's artists such as Beck and Wilco. This is a must-have volume for any music lover.
Customer Reviews:
a complex book for a complex story.......2002-11-27
This book does an excellent job of tracing the half-century relationship between country music and rock 'n' roll. I don't find it "muddled" at all and prefer the detailed information over a more streamlined slant that would have sacrificed information for an "angle." The author dwells on sensationalistic events (there certainly are enough of them to go around) only to the extent needed to provide context for the musical developments. His respect for the musicians and their music is obvious and appreciated.
Uneven, but well worth buying and reading.......2002-02-18
Peter Doggett is clearly in love with the intersection of country with rock music and has amazing anecdotes to tell about Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and about 100 other greater and lesser lights of country rock. His knowledge is encyclopedic and his opinions are well-formed and well-informed. I, like Doggett, fell for country music around the time of Dylan's Nashville Skyline and the Byrds' Sweetheart Of The Rodeo and in many ways never looked back. Gram Parsons entered into my personal mythology with the release of Gilded Palace Of Sin and got cemented there by his self-destruction in 1972. One of the best things about this book is that it managed to "demythologize" Parsons and helped me understand what he meant. Parsons was so afraid of not being hip and on the cutting edge, that he could not survive. After he had preached the gospel of country traditionalism, he couldn't get it together to become "traditional" unlike those closest to him. This book is, at it's core, about Parsons and the impulses he represented. The subtitle (Elvis, Dylan, Parsons and the roots of country rock) is ill-fitting and sounds as if it was pasted on by a Penguin editor or marketing drone because books about Dylan and Elvis sell. I also like the fact that Doggett made me reconsider artists I dismissed 30 years ago (such as Michael Nesmith). The most compelling parts of the book are insights into the personalities and the least compelling parts are the crush of minutiae about recording sessions and discographies..."and then Roseanne Cash went into the studio with Don Was..." that kind of thing - didn't add new insight. Very good book, though. Nostalgia+new appreciations+new artists+hilariously dry opinions ("hat act" will never mean the same thing again).
Groundbraking but Muddled Study of the Country - Rock Dialog.......2001-09-06
In the early months of 1966, Bob Dylan journeyed to Nashville to make what many regard as his masterwork - Blonde on Blonde, released in late spring of that year to a mixed response that has been obscured by the intervening years of baby-boomer hagiography and nostalgia. At the time, Dylan's surrealistic lyrics and increasingly edgy public persona lead many fans of his earlier acoustic-oriented material to condemn him as a traitor and a sellout to commercial interests - a moment that has been encapsulated in the marvelous live recording from Dylan's world tour of April and May of '66, released by Columbia/Sony as The Genuine Bootleg Series, Vol. 4, or Live 1966.
But this pivotal moment is not the platform upon which Peter Doggett bases his groundbreaking study of the dialog between country music and rock music, Are You Ready for the Country. Rather, it is the seemingly offhand decision that Dylan made in recording Blonde on Blonde - to relocate temporarily to Nashville and record with the cream of Nashville's session musician elite, that begins Doggett's fascinating and sometimes frustrating study of country music as it extends back and forth across time from this recording. Doggett's narrative partially revolves around the interesting idea that Dylan's recording in Nashville is a more significant event in the birth of what has been termed `country-rock' than the more recognizable signposts of Dylan's John Wesley Harding (1968) or Nashville Skyline (1969), or the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo (1968). After Blonde on Blonde, Nashville became a fashionable environment for rock musicians to record in, and Nashville session players such as Charlie McCoy, Kenny Buttrey, and Pete Drake became recognized and sought-after names for sessions by musicians from the rock field. Doggett traces the influence that Dylan's Nashville gesture had on the other eminent stars of sixties rock: The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young), and the Grateful Dead all moved towards a more country oriented sound in the late sixties. This musical and cultural climate also accounts for some of the most popular music made during the 1970's - the soft country-rock of groups such as the Eagles, Poco, and Cactus. The hackneyed image of the rock-star as cowboy that became common during this era serves as a metaphor for the decay of a vital experiment into slick and professional L.A. hedonism. Doggett outlines this shift with a rueful and detail-oriented eye, tracing how this image of country has fed back into country music, producing the many and indistinguishable 'hat acts' of nineties commercial country.
Doggett is sometimes less successful in documenting an influence from rock into country, at least in the 1960's. The influence and intermingling of rock and country is referenced in the careers of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Ray Price, and Marty Robbins. Perhaps because country's response to rock was, especially in the 1960's (and arguably into the late 1970's) mostly reactive, Doggett does not convince that rock has had a profound influence on country until the rise of 'outlaw country' in the 1970's, concurrent with the emergence of Southern Rock. But when pre-60's artists themselves blur the lines between rock and country, Doggett acknowledges them and incorporates their exploits into his narrative. Doggett's chapters on Jerry Lee Lewis are especially wonderful, providing a less-metaphorical, but no less evocative portrait of the original country-rock madman than the one presented in Nick Tosches' classic Lewis bio, Hellfire. That Lewis is a key and under-appreciated (for reasons of personality) vessel for the fusion of country and rock is another important thread in Are You Ready for the Country.
The widely-credited father of country-rock, Gram Parsons, does not come across here as the visionary, flawed genius that (overly) reverent writers have depicted him as. Rather, Parsons appears as a powerful if erratic songwriter and singer, and a deeply troubled and rather opportunistic fan of country music, a performer whose "unwavering traditionalism always pointed to the past, and not the future." Parsons' role in birthing the strains of country rock that gave rise to the Eagles and the nineties `No Depression,' or alt.country movement is not denied, but it is placed into a perspective that allows for other equally important but less lionized pioneers such as Chris Hillman, Gene Clark, and Michael Nesmith to receive their due. Nonetheless, Doggett notes that for many recent innovators in the rock field who have roots or interests in country music - groups such as Lambchop, the Gourds, and Sparklehorse, and the chameleon ironist Beck, "the road from the Byrds through LA country-rock to the Long-Ryders doesn't show up on their maps. Only the maverick figure of Gram Parsons survives, resting alongside Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, and Jimmie Rodgers as a signpost along the path."
In pointing out the rather selective memory that assembles this lineage, Doggett serves as the conscience of the country-rock exchange. He assembles a river of information and anecdotes, including many undesirable, unfashionable, crass, momentous, and sometimes brilliant elements. His narrative, the water of this river, is written in a readable, if not always dazzling style. The division of his narrative into chapters devoted to particular clusters of artists or particular periods produces many juxtapositions of personalities and careers - some of these juxtapositions lead the reader into interesting re-assessments, while others seem arbitrary or confusing - any book that attempts to draw Gram Parsons, Lionel Ritchie, The Sir Douglas Quintet, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Dylan, The Eagles, George Jones, Beck, The Beau Brummels, John Travolta, Willie Nelson, and Wilco within its covers is bound to have its bizarre and confusing moments. There are chapters of this book that warrant a number of books on their own, and the story contained here is far too rich to be encompassed in 500 pages. Ultimately, and in spite of its' shortcomings in some areas, this is an excellent and long overdue account of the often-strange and significant relationship between country and rock, deserving a place on the shelf of any fan of the musics addressed.

Book Description
During Elvis PresleyÂ's career, he recorded some 800 songs in studio conditions, meant for release on record. In addition, many informal recordings were made of Elvis singing numbers that were never intended for record release. Such recordings were made at home, whilst visiting friends, during his stay in Germany, or even as one-liners or brief extracts during concert performances. Of all of these songs, David Neale has identified some 450 different titles that were recorded by someone else before Elvis got around to recording them. Roots of Elvis lists each of these songs, identifying the original recording artist and when the original was made (some date back to the 19th century!), as well as providing fascinating background to the numbers. Readers will be surprised to learn of ElvisÂ's link with Ignacy Paderewski, for example, the man who prepared USA President WilsonÂ's Treaty of Versailles. The range of music represented is quite extraordinary and is testimony to ElvisÂ's versatility: rockÂ'nÂ'roll, blues, rhythm and blues, gospel, folk, and even a bit of classical: who would have thought that names such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms would appear in a book about the music of Elvis Presley!

Historical vignettes of Elvis songs, a new reference book!.......2003-12-04
Since the enduring element in the popularity of Elvis Presley is his music, "Roots Of Elvis" by David Neale is a delightful resource to own. With the help of David's fascinating in-depth research into each title, it is possible to find and listen to the original versions of the songs that Elvis sang. David's ongoing research showcases both the versatility of the song choices and the genius of Presley's arrangements of them. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the music of Elvis Presley.

Book Description
Although the importance of Elvis Presley's Southern heritage has long been recognized, few have considered the complex connection between the performer's career and his Southern roots. This study investigates how that identity affected each stage of Presley's career.
Elvis Presley's career can be divided into three phases, each of which is signified by a specific image. Each image is coded by a certain style of music, mode of dress, and arena of performance. The evolution from one career phase to another was instigated by a specific event and represented a deliberate calculation on the part of Presley's manager to attract a wider audience.
The first stage spans the years 1956 through 1958, after the singer was introduced to a national audience and before he was drafted into the army. His image as a notorious rock 'n' roller created a national controversy and was spurred by negative depictions of Presley in the media-many attributing his controversial performing style and appearance to his Southern background. His music was a fusion of rhythm and blues and country-western; or, two types of music indigenous to the South and foreign to the mainstream entertainment industry based in New York City. The second phase of Elvis' career included his stint as a movie star, in which most aspects of his Southern identity were extracted from his leading man image to enhance his appeal to the mainstream. And, finally, the last stage of his career focused on his image as a Las Vegas performer. Despite the gaudy costumes, Elvis reconnected to his identity as a Southerner in the 1970s by returning to country music and songwriters as a source of inspiration. Bibliography. Index

A must for any Elvis fan........1999-06-01
This is a new interpretation of Elvis'career, based on the fact that he was from the South, and that makes this book different from others. Also, it is a serious look at Elvis from this angle, but it does not trash him. It offers a kinder interpretation of his film career than most authors offer. I highly recommend this book to any Elvis enthusiast. Even if you are not an Elvis fan you will enjoy this book.

Book Description
With a new foreword by William C. Davis.
A rare Sephardic Jew in the Old South and a favorite of Jefferson Davis, Judah P. Benjamin has been described as "the brains of the Confederacy." He held three successive Confederate cabinet posts--attorney general, secretary of war, and secretary of state--and was Davis's closest confidant in the government. But some have questioned Benjamin's loyalty to Davis and the extent of his influence. More than 140 years after Benjamin first appeared on the Confederate scene, historians still debate his place in the history of the Lost Cause. Originally published back in 1943 and now available for the first time in paperback, Robert Douthat Meade's JUDAH P. BENJAMIN, CONFEDERATE STATESMAN provides an absorbing account of the life of this enigmatic Civil War figure.
Meade chronicles Benjamin's birth in the Virgin Islands; his rise to power as a lawyer and politician in south Louisiana; his election to the U.S. Senate in the 1850s; his outspoken role in the secession controversy; his friendship with Davis; his prominent role in the Confederate government; his daring escape after Appomattox; and his brilliant second law career in England after the war. Still the definitive study of Benjamin after nearly sixty years, Meade's authoritative work is a classic of Civil War biography.
Customer Reviews:
A pearl of great price...........2007-06-08
Judah Benjamin's story has fascinated me since I was a child. Here was a man who lived by a masterful combination of brains and charm, who overcame great adversity, and, when The Cause was lost, picked himself up and moved on. Benjamin was a biographer's nightmare...he never kept correspondence, burned all his papers before evacuating Richmond [and did the same shortly before he died], and never wrote, or spoke, of the Civil War once it was over. He became the richest lawyer in Louisiana at a young age, lost everything in the war, and, starting over in England in his 50's, became the richest lawyyer there. Who was the first Jew in the U.S. Senate? Who was the first Jew nominated to the Supreme Court? Who was the first American Jew to hold a Cabinet position. Who was the first Jew [and man born outside England] to be a Queen's Counsel in England? Benjamin is the answer to ALL those trivia questions. [David Yulee had served in the Senate earlier, but he had long since converted to Presbyterian; Benjamin turned down President Fillmore's nomination because the Court didn't pay enough] Judah Benjamin held three different jobs in President Davis' Cabinet,[despite an earlier near duel with Davis in the Senate] and was, in many ways, Davis' right hand man, accessory brain, and designated "nice guy", soothing the feathers that Davis ruffled. The story of Benjamin's escape to England at the end of the war is, alone, worth the price of the book. Benjamin's marriage gets plenty of space; in many ways, it was the match made in Hell. Natalie was a piece of work, yet the Benjamins were, on some level, quite devoted to each other, and stayed more or less together for over 50 years.
Judah Benjamin is a problem for some Jews, and northern liberals...here was a Jew, educated at Yale, who owned slaves, and was probably the most articulate defender of slavery. Then, he was one of the central figures in the Confederacy for four years. History does not always fit neatly; try making Thomas Jefferson fit anything. The number of Jews in the Confederacy was around 2000 [see Robert Rosen's "The Jewish Confederates"], and, as for slavery, not only did rich Jews own slaves, so did rich Indians, Mexicans, and free Blacks.
Dr. Robert Meade published this great masterpiece in 1943. It is one of the very finest pieces of biography about anybody, anytime. There are three other Benjamin biographies that I know about, and own. Two of them are even worth reading. But, there is no real comparison. This is up there with Dr. Freeman's "R.E. Lee". High praise, I know, and not made lightly. {If you can find Meade's two volume study of Patrick Henry, get it. Good luck} LSU press deserves a big "THANK YOU" for making this great book available.
Judah P. Benjamin: Confederate Statesman.......2007-01-04
Excellent perspective of history without the northern or PC agenda.
