Roger Nash Baldwin's thirty-year tenure as director of the ACLU marked the period when the modern understanding of the Bill of Rights came into being. Spearheaded by Baldwin, volunteer attorneys of the caliber of Clarence Darrow, Arthur Garfield Hays, Osmond Frankel, and Edward Ennis transformed the constitutional landscape. Company police forces were dismantled. Antievolutionists were discredited (thanks to the Scopes Trial). Censorship of such works as James Joyce's Ulysses was halted. The Scottsboro Boys and Sacco and Vanzetti were defended. The right of free speech for communists and Ku Klux Klansmen alike was upheld, and the foundations were laid for an end to school segregation.

Robert Cottrell's magnificent book recaptures the accomplishments and contradictions of the complicated man at the center of these events. Driven, vain, frugal, and tempestuous, America's greatest civil libertarian was initially also a staunch defender of Communist Russia, deferred to the U.S. government over the internment of Japanese Americans, and openly admired J. Edgar Hoover and Douglas MacArthur. His personal relationships were equally complex. Spanning a hundred years from the late 1800s through Baldwin's death in 1981, this riveting biography is an eye-opening view of the development of the American left.

Once again, Professor Cottrell has proven that he is one of our best biographers of radical left intellectuals. As with Cottrell's earlier biographies of I.F. Stone and Nicholas Comfort, this latest biography fills a woeful gap and does so with expertise. Cottrell leads us through the inception and growth of the ACLU, as we follow Baldwin's travels from the east coast to the midwest. This book is exquisitely researched, beautifully written, and passionately conveyed, as Cottrell shares with us the fascinating story of both Baldwin and the ACLU, surely one of America's greatest contributions to personal rights. Excellent Book!.......2004-04-17

I loved this book--I couldn't put it down. This man is to be commended for his perseverance and determination to make a useful and meaningful life for himself despite being orphaned. Using facts, much humor and anecdotes, he tells his story from his youth to his successful career as a respected criminalist.
The reader will be enthralled with the intricate details and complexites that ultimately result in resolving a crime. You will also get a sense of the integrity, compassion and innate intelligence, despite the self-effacing writing style that is exhibited. Highly recommended!

Good read!!.......2004-03-30

Thoroughly enjoyable from the first page to the last. You will find yourself living the author's life along with him. Like listening to an expert storyteller who holds you enthralled through one adventure to another. Only wish I could have been a fly on the wall at the Chess Game and oh to have met the "World Champion Wrestler (rassler)" Then on a more serious note how the application of methods available before DNA were used to solve crimes. Fingerprints, polygraphs (with particular reference to Dave Backster who hooked a polygraph up to one of his plants with startling results. You won't want to put this one down.

The Home Boy's Odyssey.......2004-03-24

This is a book that is a little difficult to categorize. It is a collection of short stories which represent the author's journey through life, starting from his youth as an orphan in a children's home in Denver-- experiences after leaving the home and his time in the CCC program and the army during WWII--anecdotes in the San Francisco Bay area where he worked as a teacher of Criminalistics and the chief of a crime lab--his work as a criminalist/advisor to foreign governments--and as a teacher of forensic science in Latin America and the Caribbean region.
There are some interesting insights to the scientific investigation process and to the phenomenon of terrorism. I believe that the book will hold interest to sociologists and former inmates of children's institutions and to people in the criminal investigation field, as well as nostalgia buffs in the Denver and San Francisco areas.

Lots of Information--where it matters least.......2007-10-01

I've had this book for years. And yes, while it's a very good guide for grading coins in the inferior grades; and as someone mentioned, even many ten year old kids can do this--those aren't the grades that most often matter much with regards to US coins.

For example, a well known mail order coin company has a 1923 Mercury dime for sale, right now, for $8.75 in the grade of good--which is probably a bit much, for one of the lowest possible coin grades. On Ebay, the same coin in "choice BU" (and no one knows what that means exactly particualrly not on ebay), appears, for sale, and to be a roughly MS-60 coin. It can be "bought now" for $50 bucks. So that's the range that Photograde handles--Almost Good, to Brilliant Uncirculated. A range which varies from $5 - $50 on this particular, common date Mercury dime.

Now that same dime however, has sold recently at auction for $500 in MS66, $1800 in MS67, and a whopping $12,500 in MS68!

In other words, unless you're a kid collecting out of your lawn mowing proceeds, the real issue nine times out of ten; on most coins after 1850), isn't whether or not a coin rates VF or F, it's all about the 10 different grades from MS60--MS70.

It's frankly amazing to me that there isn'tt a good guidebook published by PCGS or ANACS, that can do in text form, what these organizations pretend to do every day of the year behind closed doors--determine grades of uncirculated and proof coins.

Such a book would be relatively expensive, maybe $50-$100 or more. But for people who collect coins at least in part as investments, this amount is barely significant in terms of what it would mean to teh collector.

Photograde? It's a decent enough compendium, but you can go online and get most of their grading criteria, with better pictures, for free. The book is sadly out of date IMO, in the sense that it still treats coin grade divisions, much as they were treated 30 years ago.

Highly recommended guide........2007-08-07

More than 1,000 black-and-white obverse and reverse coin photographs clearly show the visual distinctions to look for when grading currency, and the easy-to-understand terms and grading descriptions make Photograde a snap to use for beginners and advanced graders alike. Special chapters on counterfeits and how to value, clean, retone, and store coins round out this highly recommended guide.

Good, but not complete........2007-06-30

This book is considered the standard reference for grading coins. It's very well done with B&W images and descriptions, but only covers coin grades up to AU50. If you collect MS grade coins, this book really won't be of much help to you.

This was worthless.......2007-06-23

The description was that of a photographic grading guide. Photographic to me means just that...actual photographs of the different grades. Every items was in black and white. Also, the grading stopped at AU. What happened to the uncirculated grades?

Anyone other than a novice will be extremely disappointed with this product.

Photograde.......2007-05-09

Since I primarily deal in and with ancient coins, this guide has proven to be a tremendous asset. The complexity of grading American coins has grown in recent years and this book has saved me hours of work, now that I have begun seller in the United Stateds coin market.

luscious lavender for the eye and much more.......2000-08-04

I just saw this book while visiting a B&B on a lavender farm and came right home to try to find a copy to buy - i just had to have it! The photographs of commercial lavender fields in bloom are unbelievably gorgeous and make you want to take the next plane to Provence or Norfolk. The history is fascinating and also beautifully illustrated with pictures and quotations. The crafts are lovely and the recipes tempting. This book is a treat for the gardener, cook, craftsperson, traveller, historian and many others as well.

This terrific little Chanukah story is a great pleaser for small children, particularly the twosies, who can relate to a hero who always says "No."

Judah will not take a nap or play follow-the-leader. When a wicked Greek king conquers Jerusalem, Judah's refusals become more serious. He still says 'No'--to changing his Hebrew name, to playing in the gym, to praying to Greek gods. "The Jews," he tells the king, "pray to only One God."

Now, Judah begins to lead his people, asking them if they will let this king destroy them. "No," they cry. Judah strikes like a hammer, and the Temple is cleaned and sanctified. Only after a little jar of oil burned for eight days, will Judah celebrate the miracle. This time, Judah said, "Yes."
