Book Description
This inspirational story told by patient and author, John Amatuzio, about his long battle against leukemia, culminates a 20 year (and counting) journey of unimaginable proportions.
As the patient, John was told that his type of leukemia had never been successfully cured through bone marrow transplantation using a non-related donor. The count worldwide was 0 for 20 and mounting at the time.
With no other alternatives, John went through major testing, private investigator assistance, major turmoil and a donor materializing on the last possible evening in order to receive his transplant. Incredible bouts with faith and intense religious occurrences following the transplant finally led victory over defeat against insurmountable odds.
Stand side by side with John as he endures 106 degree fevers, organ failure, GVHD, total body radiation treatments, Last Rites, fist fights and experimental protocols. Personal betrayals lead to loneliness and a seemingly broken life that through twists of fate and unshakeable faith bring him to thanksgiving.
Readers from all walks of life will find this emotional tale thought-provoking and insightful. A must read if you or someone you love is living with cancer.

No Fabrication Here!.......2005-07-25
I can say that this story is an accurate account of a very difficult time for John, his family and true friends. Ive seen first hand virtually every experience touched upon in Johns story and can attest to its accuracy. People may think, say or write whatever they like but ultimately God knows the truth. I highly recommend this book to anyone facing adversity.
God bless you and your family John
"Close enough to Know"
"but for the Grace of God go I" St. Philip Neri.......2005-04-05
John has articulated/enumerated in his book the fortitude, rectitude, focus and endurance that is necessary to survive any chronic illness...patient and family.
It is not a pleasant thing to be asked by God to persevere, especially, when one is seemingly at the mercy of so many others.
Job's wife instructed him to curse God and die...he would not.
John's suffering has not been self-imposed but has been a gift from God to bring him closer to Jesus in mind, body, soul, and spirit. I applaud him not only for the book, but foremost: for the testimony of his life.
Faith, Courage and Strength.......2005-02-21
This book exhibits tremendous human faith, strength and courage. Mr. Amatuzio has overcome tremendous physical illness and continues to do so today.
His book is an amazing detailed account of all the pain and suffering he has endured. In a small sense, the reader experiences the same physical pain and emotional roller coaster ride as the author.
John has been blessed with the ability to write a detailed account of his life and battle against leukemia and G.V.H.D.
His story is of great inspiration to all who are dealing with medical and physical adversity.
AMAZING!!!!!!!!.......2004-11-29
This book is truly amazing, and it was a valuable tool for me as a care giver. John tells it like it is, but leaves the reader with a sense of hope and faith. I can't thank John enough for the way that this book helped me through one of the most difficult times in my life, and for giving me a renewed sense of faith.
Courage in Action.......2004-11-21
Kudos !! The most amazing share of self and life experience! It was inspiring to see such a display of courage! Thank you for the contribution!

Two fundamentally different business models of capitalism are operating in the business world today. One is self-destructive and increasingly corrupt. The other is emergent, flourishing, and inspirational. The author explains the differences between the two and reveals the extraordinary results of the more successful model. Profit for Life draws on nearly forty years of research on the empirical connections between stewardship and profitability.

Review of Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels by Joseph H. Bragdon.......2007-04-08
Profit for Life shatters the old paradigm that success in business means sucking the life from people and natural resources by viewing both as dispensable commodities. By showing us how success in business--including big business--goes hand-in-hand with respect for human and natural communities, Bragdon frees us from the wrenching misconception that profit and citizenship represent a kind of zero-sum game.
Bragdon unites head and heart in one of the most uplifting books I have ever read. Profit for Life offers hope with a firm footing. I recommend Profit for Life to anyone with an interest in business management, strategic investment, or corporate citizenship.

Book Review for Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels
by Ann McGee-Cooper
How do you measure the value of servant leadership in business? How can we know it works? These have been two of the most frequently asked questions in our consulting practice over the past 30 years.
In Profit for Life, Jay Bragdon provides us with some compelling answers. He does this by setting aside much of the linear cause-and-effect thinking that drives business these days, and adopts a more rounded, holistic approach that gives us deeper insight into the firm.
The book is based on the experiences of 60 companies - Bragdon's "learning lab" - that broadly represent the industry/sector diversity of the world economy. Throughout the text he describes 16 of these pioneering companies, called the Focus Group. The distinguishing feature of all these firms is their effort to mimic living systems - in the ways they organize, manage and add value. This mental model is radically different from the traditional one that views the firm as a money making machine.
Although it may seem counter intuitive, the living system approach yields vastly superior results than the traditional one. For example, the average equity return of learning lab companies was nearly double the S&P 500 over the past decade; and their excess performance continues as this review is written. Bragdon expects such premium returns will diminish over time as the more effective methods of the living system model become copied and enter the mainstream. Nevertheless, these results are a strong affirmation of the milieu in which servant leadership normally operates.
Servant leadership, to Bragdon, is all about relationships. He says "relational equity" is the foundation on which companies build financial equity. When companies care about people and the things people care about, Employees become inspired and their inspiration cascades into everything they do, including their relationships with customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders.
The raison d'etre of these servant-led firms is value creation - value that permeates all relationships. Companies that excel at such value creation pursue a strategy Bragdon calls "living asset stewardship" (LAS). The fundamental premise of LAS is: Profit arises from life, and must therefore serve life if it is to be sustainable.
To understand the strategic value of living asset stewardship, Bragdon makes a critical distinction between living assets (people and Nature) and non-living capital assets (buildings, equipment and financial reserves). We see this in three contexts. First, people are closely bonded to Nature - genetically, physically and spiritually - in ways that capital assets are not. Second, living assets are the source of non-living capital assets. And third, because living assets are inherently creative and emergent, their value grows over time rather than depreciating as capital assets do.
The operating leverage in the learning lab and the 16 Focus Group companies resides in the human heart rather than in mechanistic financial gearing. This is supported by the fact that they generate consistently higher returns on equity while carrying substantially lower debt ratios.
Although traditionally managed companies have been adopting some stewardship practices in the past decade, Bragdon finds their approach differs fundamentally from those in his study. In the mechanistic view of these firms, stewardship is an add-on that is subservient to their drive for profit. By contrast, in companies that have adopted the living system model, LAS is deeply woven into the value creation process - reflecting the fact that they see themselves as "living" and therefore integral to, rather than separate from, Nature and society.
Profit for Life builds on the brilliant work of Arie deGeus, former coordinator of Group Planning at Royal Dutch/Shell, and Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson. DeGeus' classic, The Living Company, noted that long-lived companies had a collective consciousness, were sensitive to their environments, tried to work in harmony with the world around them, and strove to leave a legacy to future generations. Wilson tells us this collective consciousness is an expression of humanity's deep affinity for life, which he calls "biophilia," and that our biophilic instincts have evolved over thousands of generations of natural selection.
In my work as a teacher of servant leadership, I would highlight the paradigm shift Bragdon describes. The mission of leaders in LAS organizations is to serve and grow their people because that is the source of the firm's liveliness and capacity for growth. As Robert K. Greenleaf said: "The first order of business is to build a group of people who, under the influence of the institution, grow taller and become healthier, stronger and more autonomous." That seminal quote is used twice in the book to describe the power and generative capacity of LAS.
I highly recommend this book and will be using it regularly in our practice.

An Extraordinary Book: A Must Read.......2006-11-26
I intend to recommend Profit for Life to all my current MBA students. Next fall I am team teaching an MBA core course that combines Operations Management and Managerial Accounting. I intend to make the case that your book should be required reading and part of the course.
I became familiar with the work of W. Edwards Deming in 1990 and attended one of his four day seminars a year later. I also began to follow Peter Senge's work and later read Margaret Wheatley's book, Leadership and the New Science. Tom Johnson's book, Profit Beyond Measure, has been required reading in my Advanced Managerial Accounting elective at the MBA level.
Bragdon's book has brought the ideas, theories, and concepts discussed by these individuals together for me in a way that I could not have imagined. More importantly, he has not only taken their ideas to the next level, but done it in a way that provides a tangible blue print for how to change our current style of command and control management with its focus on profit maximization to a LAS Theory of Management.
The use of the sixteen focus companies from the LAMP INDEX and the author's ability ability to clearly show the distinctions in their style of management from the traditional management models that continue to be taught in almost all business schools, and the success these companies have achieved not just financially, gives those of us hoping to change management education and core business curriculums a new hope.
Thank you for such an outstanding book.

Excellent, highly readable information.......2006-11-18
This is not one of those lightweight business books that repeats its Chapter 1 message over and over. It's chock full of research-based information that anyone involved in the sustainability movement should have. The publisher is Peter Senge's non-profit, so if you're familiar with his excellent work over the years, this would make a great addition to your library. The author's passion for his subject is obvious from page one.

This Book ain't my good buddy!.......2000-04-04
In this world of endless struggle and crisis, you need a book that would get you along in the world of accounting. Unfortunately, this book is a disappointment to the GAAP. Like my good buddies said, the author did not organize the topics well...this and that mumbo-jumbo. I have to teach it to my students my own way. Right now we only use the book for the questions. The questions are so hard too for my students. Everytime the homeworks are due, people come to me and bug me. People like...well..I don't wanna mention names here. In conclusion, people of the world unite to overthrow this book from academic acceptance it currently enjoys and on to the pile of rubble.
Stay away from this book.......2000-03-31
This book talks about accounting in a limited way. Whereas it says that it aims to present accounting to the reader regardless of his/her background, the book certainly fails to do so. Organization of information is poorly executed, and lack of depth and non-randomization of scenarios make the readers' perspective quite limited.
Book Description
Hundreds of pieces of jewelry are photographed in beautiful full color and are presented with authoritative descriptions and market values. A most enjoyable value guide full of information and a must for jewelry lovers and collectors. 1999 values. AUTHORBIO: Lillian Baker was an author for more than four decades. Her first book on Hatpins Hatpin Holders in 1976 was the first and only worldwide definitive book on the subject. She also authored 100 Years of Collectible Jewelry, Plastic Jewelry of the 20th Century, Fifty Years of Collectible Fashion Jewelry, Art Nouveau Art Deco Jewelry, and Creative Collectible Miniatures. REVIEW: This book has become a standard among jewelry collectors worldwide. Written by the late Lillian Baker, it is a quick reference pocket guide, yet a comprehensive work covering 100 years of jewelry collecting.
Customer Reviews:
Lost in collectible Jewelryland?.......2000-03-26
Lillian Baker's "100 Years of Collectible Jewelry" might help you to find your way, but only barely. The small opening section, with a brief history of jewelry, may be helpful to the novice...but is by no means complete or even truly interesting to the seasoned collector. It will give you an overview of jewelry styles and some of the historic events that prompted them, but will leave you wanting more. (Much more.) The photographs in the book are clear, but very small; not wildly exciting nor representative of all periods and jewelry styles. However Ms. Baker does go into areas not generally covered...hair combs, hat pins and beaded purse are investigated although in a flash in the pan sort of way. Possibly the major advantage of the book is the Glossary of Terms. If you are brand spanking new to collecting jewelry, this may be the most helpful and informative portion of the book. Overall I would recommend the book for it's reasonable price and easy to chew small bites of information, but if you are interested in a compelling, in-depth view of the history of jewelry, this book is not for you.

Customer Reviews:
Very overpriced - minimal repair capability.......2007-02-16
I was aware before I bought this kit that some reviews questioned the value of this kit and boy were they right! I bought the kit at a remaindered book store for just over thirty dollars and even at that price I feel it was not quite value for money. Admittedly it does have a good selection of repair supplies that it would be difficult to assemble elsewhere; but I feel that I would have been more satisfied if it had been priced at fifteen to twenty dollars; the list price of around one hundred dollars is crazy and you'd have to be crazy to think that was value for money. The kit is packaged in a very fancy, expensive looking, but unnecessary and rather impractical, box. The book that accompanies the kit gives detailed instructions on how to tackle some minor repairs - but they are minor - mostly tears to pages and lightly damaged covers and spine. It is FIRST AID; you cannot rebind a book with this kit and infuriatingly it gives advice on some repairs that require additional non-supplied materials for which an order form is included!
If you can get it at a much reduced price you may find it useful if you have torn pages or dustcovers, a loose flyleaf, or slightly damaged spines. But, if like me you have an old book which has a completely loose cover, and bound pages that are falling apart, you need a bookbinder; this kit will not do it.
worthless.......2003-12-08
You can assemble this so-called kit together yourself at only a fraction of the cost (even at the bargain-basement price). Let's face it, the tools provided here are poorer than poor, the same scissors, glue, and needles you'd find at any 99C store. As for the instruction book, you'd be much better off buying a real volume on book repair from either Amazon or one of those library supplies store (such as Gaylord). That leaves only the bulky box itself. I suppose it does look better than a shoebox on the bookshelf. But you'd be a fool to pay so much just for that. In short, for the same amount of money, why not buy yourself a nice new book instead?
Wow! I was looking for just this kit!.......2001-03-02
I got an issue of a German women's magazine Freundin and theyfeatured this Booklover's Repair Kit. I'd been looking all over for a proper set of materials to repair some old bindings. This is simply brilliant.
It would take me many trips or orders by mail, phone or internet to assemble all these necessary items. Not only is everything you need in this kit, but you can also use it to make your own bookbindings (you need some kind of press, but that can be a piece of wood and some clamps, and a bone folder which can be found in craft stores that carry scrapbooking items.) If you like to scrapbook or do your own journal OR if you collect old books, this kit is a must.
Scarlett O'Hara['s book] was not beautiful..........2000-11-13
At last someone has grasped the depth of personal sentiment attached not merely to content but to the medium, the books themselves, those volumes with their loose covers, cracked bindings and torn pages. Thank you, Ms. Ellis and Messrs. Wiggins and Lee.
As I have watched my niece graduate from Ramona and Harry Potter to Judy Blume, I have wondered how I could give her my adored but crumbling copy of Gone With The Wind, worrying about her rejecting it for its evident decay, or worse, the book's ability to withstand another reading. Now a talented trio has put together a kit which will allow butterfingered me to repair the novel before passing it on. The Booklover's Repair Kit doesn't just tell me how to do it, in straightforward terms with helpful diagrams. Much more in fact, since everything I may need to fix the book comes with it.
If you give a damn about the books on your shelf, you will want the Booklover's Repair Kit to join them with its handsome packaging and enough supplies to fix a dozen or so tattered books, be they Proust or Mitchell.

Herbs are all the rage. But herbal products are largely unregulated by the government, and much of what we know about them is based on patient testimonials and marketing mumbo jumbo rather than hard scientific evidence. Despite these large gaps in our knowledge, herb use is on the rise as people grow increasingly dissatisfied with mainstream medicine.
To sort out the hype from the science, two respected Duke University psychiatrists trained in traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine wrote Herbs for the Mind. They provide in-depth reviews of the data behind four popular alternative remedies: St. John's wort for depression, kava for stress or anxiety, gingko for memory loss, and valerian for insomnia. They also provide overviews of the symptoms, causes, and traditional treatments for these ailments.
Herbs for the Mindis an invaluable resource if you're considering using natural remedies to treat mental maladies. It guides you in deciding where herbs fit into an overall treatment plan, how to enlist your doctor's help in developing an herbal self-help program, how to know if an herb is working for you, when to switch brands or products, and when to stop using herbs altogether. It also points out what medicine has yet to learn about herbs, including the potential dangers of long-term use. A glossary defines commonly used terms, and a resource section provides a list of authoritative herbal and mental health textbooks, journals, and organizations. --Nancy Monson
Book Description
In the last five years, herbal remedies have led the charge of natural products into the health care market--despite conflicting reports on their effectiveness and safety. But now consumers are stepping back and asking the tough questions: Do these herbs actually work? Does "natural" mean "safe"? What about side effects? From leading researchers and Duke University psychiatrists, this book translates hard data into the accessible answers you need to make informed decisions on taking St. John's wort for depression, kava for stress or anxiety, valerian for insomnia, or ginkgo for memory loss. You will learn:
*Which treatments, traditional and alternative, have proven most effective for common psychological ills--and where herbs fall in the list
*How to judge when you're getting maximum benefits, when to switch brands or products, and when to stop taking herbs
*When you may need more than herbs, and how to enlist your doctor's support with your herbal self-help program
*What science still does not know about herbs.
SHORT PROFESSIONAL COPY (revised 12/17/99)
More and more health care consumers are taking or considering herbal remedies to soothe their psychological aches and pains, from depression, stress, and anxiety, to insomnia and memory loss. Now mental health professionals have a reliable scientific source for answers to frequently asked questions about herbs. This book offers an authoritative guide to the most popular "herbs for the mind": St. John's wort, kava, valerian, and ginkgo. From leading researchers and Duke University psychiatrists Jonathan R. T. Davidson and Kathryn M. Connor, the book is appropriate for a broad audience of professionals and consumers. Clear guidelines are provided for developing an herbal self-help regimen and recognizing when professional intervention may be necessary. Written in accessible, nontechnical language, the book features a wealth of case examples, clear information on product selection and dosages, and helpful checklists, tables, and charts. Also included are a handy glossary of terms and consumer resource listings on psychological and herb-related topics.
Customer Reviews:
A "must" for alternative medicine reference collections........2000-09-04
In the past five years herbal remedies have led natural products in the health care market, but consumers are asking new questions about the safety and effectiveness of these unregulated substances. Researchers and psychiatrists examine herbs related to mental health, telling how to assess common herbs for effectiveness, side effects, and lasting impact.
A must have!.......2000-08-16
Herbs for the Mind is an excellent, easy to read guide for navigating what is often a confusing path - that of successfully using alternative treatments for mental health problems. What to take? How much? What are the differences in brands? Such questions, and many more are answered clearly and concisely in Herbs for the Mind.
It is refreshing to learn about herbal remedies in a straighforward and scientifically-based manner. Drs. Davidson and Connor have truly done us a great service with their book. Anyone, from savvy consumers to mental health practitioners, can benefit greatly from the information in Herbs for the Mind. I have already used it, personally and professionally, with success. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in mental health!
This book changed my attitude about herbal remedies!.......2000-07-21
I have sought advice from time to time for depression, anxiety, and sleep problems, but I've never considered "alternative medicine." But I took a look at Herbs for the Mind and started reading first about St. John's wort for depression. I learned things I didn't know about depression, and I learned how and why to try this herbal remedy. The whole book, then, was of interest to me and I have enjoyed reading the history of herbal remedies and all the details of the various studies that tell us what and when herbs are useful. Everyone I mention this book to wants it! I'm really glad I found it, and I'm really glad these two psychiatrists from Duke University decided to step out of the laboratory and write it.
