Book Description

In this sometimes startlingly candid account, Kathleen Ridder explores the passions that have motivated her in constructing and pursuing a life of community service and personal accomplishment. A native New Yorker, the twenty-year-old Ridder arrived in Duluth in 1943 as a new member of a socially prominent family of newspaper publishers. In consciously seeking to be her own person, Ridder found over the following decades numerous outlets for her considerable energies and interests: Minnesota Independent-Republican politics, the Urban League and the emerging civil rights movement, alternative education, Twin Cities regional government, feminist organizations, and the women's athletic program at the University of Minnesota. She interweaves these public details with the more private ones of her marriage of fifty-plus years, her enjoyment in raising four children, and her ongoing nurturance of her spiritual life.

Unifying Ridder's narrative are her natural feminism, her innate sense of fair-mindedness, and her conviction that privilege and position bring with them the obligation to work toward the social good of the community.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating recollection of community service and feminism........1998-11-16

Candid memoir of a well-off suburban housewife whose feminism emerges after years of active participation in community activities. Her story shows enormous dedication and commitment to "making a difference".

5 out of 5 stars 21 Days with a Vulture.......2002-12-07

Real life terror is so much more frightening than make believe terror, don't you think? Since this book is based on Evora's real life trip to France with a maniac, I read it in one setting because it really grabbed my attention and held on to it.

I checked out her website Evorabooks.com and see she has written another book. It's called 'Tainted Sand' and is a murder mystery.

I don't think we have heard the last of this very productive and excellent new writer.

4 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-09-30

Evora Jordan has done it again. This true nail-biter weaves real-life suspense into novelistic format as the author recounts her harrowing experience traveling with a fellow who was not as he initially seemed. How the author survives and ultimately learns so much from this experience is a testament to human courage and endurance. This reader cannot wait for her next book, and even dares hope it is a follow-on to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful........2000-12-24

I'm delighted to see that Evora Jordan has written this intriguing book. It is impossible not to be touched by the uplifting perseverence of this special human being.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read !.......2000-04-04

This book was chosen by another member of a book club which I belong to and is not something I would have normally read. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this adventure. This author brings us along on a trip to France and due to her travel companion this turned out to be a rather horrid experience. Thanks to some guadian angels and her drawing on her profesional experience she was able to get through this heart wrenching "vacaction".

            Book Description

It is the early 1940s, and a horse-drawn wooden cart works its way down "the strip" — Manhattan's Upper East Side. The driver loads his cart at various opulent buildings — with help from thankful supers — taking away tenants' unwanted goods. Returning downtown, the cart's booty will help the fledgling Newel Art Gallery become one of the most influential decorative arts and antiques galleries in the nation.

Bruce Newman's new book chronicles his fifty-year career in the decorative arts/antiques arena, discovering, acquiring, and selling art and antiques from all over the world. Newman recounts the early days of being mentored by his father and his own tenure, during which he often dealt with famous clients such as Jackie Kennedy, Dustin Hoffman, and Woody Allen. Finally, he brings his expertise to bear on ways in which a buyer of antiques can feel more confident in their own abilities.

Everyone from "Antiques Roadshow" fans to antiques novices and mavens will find this book a treasure trove of information and entertainment. Includes a 16-page photo insert

I was disappointed - I thought it would be more informative instead of self congratulatory.

            1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2006-03-17

So this is how bad self-serving biographies have reached. Maybe the auther shouldn't come back until he has found a fact checker, a psychiatrist, or competent ghost writer. It is impossible to really know if he is capable of telling anything that isn't an exaggeration or written to embellish himself at other's expense.

Speaking of expense, I have never seen a book like this advertise so heavily in newspapers. Of course this is at the expense of Pratt Institute, whom the author has graciously offered to donate any profits from this book. Shame on him.

Oh, one more thing, in his ads, he quotes an endorsement from Bruce Wolmer, editor in chief of Art & Antiques Magazine. I would hope he realizes that Wolner works at ART & AUCTION MAGAZINE. That's typical of this book.

            5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2006-03-16

Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. It was a fast read about the antiques industry and one man's special experiences on how he learned his trade and succeeded by taking his business to the next level.

I felt it was an immodest telling of his meetings with celebrities and how we all would feel if we had dealings with them. I especially liked his anecdotes about Jackie Kennedy.

It was also interesting to learn of his family saga (we all have one) and how he was able to overcome many obstacles along the way.

The tips and tactics section at the end was a great chapter for beginners to get an overall basic view of how the industry works.

I totally agree with Thomas Hoving (the former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC) who wrote an excerpt on the jacket cover stating that it was "fun...authentic...and a riveting story."

            1 out of 5 stars why bother.......2006-02-22

This book is written with an ax to grind. It seems that the author's family issues have had a greater effect on his life than his success as a dealer. The author needs a psychiatrist to deal with these issues and this book seems to be his vehicle for resolving them.

However, if that wasn't a problem, his contradictions are glarring. In one line he says he never would buy at auction, (pg 168) and then he describes his bidding experiences (pg 215); he says he wanted to rid Newel of "to the trade only" yet his advertisements carried that statement for years; he disparages dealers who exhibit at antiques fairs and their important clients (pg 139) yet he is awed by celebrities and the rich and famous (is he an A-list wantabee?). On and on, saying one thing then the opposite.

Newel is a great company; to bad the author's ego distorts his own denial about how lucky he was to get it all for nothing, to get the opportunity to head a company that his father had already successfully build for him. It's ashame he couldn't have focused his energies into really enhancing the image of an antiques dealer to the public.

3 out of 5 stars A good, light read on one aspect of the Antique Trade.......2006-02-20

This book is titled "Don't Come Back Until You Find It, Tales From an Antique Dealer". What it is not titled is "The Authoritative Book on Antiquing", and true to the title this book presents tales from the authors history in this business.

Having no real exposure to the antique trade before watching the Antiques Roadshow on PBS, I first purchased "Hidden Treasures" by the Keno brothers......famed by their involvement on the PBS show and one of their own now. Where "Hidden Treasures" describes both the involvement of the Keno brothers in the Antique trade from their youth to the present (one a dealer and the other a resident expert on Americana at Sotheby's) as well as insightful advice on how they judge any given piece presented to them, Bruce Newman's book is more of a memoir, a look back over his career in the trade and the major events that he was a part of.

If you are NOT well versed in the antique trade, then Newman's book is a good place to start. As he describes in his book, he enjoyed the role of trying to expand the antique market to as many people as possible, never looking down his nose at inane inquiries or naive amateurs. He accomplishes the same with his book. While it is still more of a memoir, his tales are well told and in a conversational style that makes for a quick and fun read.

I also liked his approach to dealing with his adversaries: If it feels good, don't do it. In other words, by continually taking the high road, you will never find yourself in the gutter.

The last 20% or so of the book gives some basic guideposts as to how one might approach the antique trade, and many of his thoughts are very well received. It is certainly not a How-To guide but that's not what he attempts to do right from the start.

I enjoyed this book, commiserated with him on his business dilemmas over the years (family and otherwise) and genuinely believe that his manner and approach to life, to treat people with respect and integrity, helped him have the successful career and life he describes in his book. Nicely done, especially his involvement with Jacqueline Kennedy to start the book. I too felt the air rush out of the room reading it.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Book for Parents and Educators.......2001-08-29

As a teacher I found many helpful ideas to introduce media literacy to my middle school students in this book. The examples given of ways to get children to consider their TV habits and the things they buy can be used with various age groups. Why four stars? Because I found this book had a very upper middle class, preaching-to-the-converted attitude in places. Levin speaks as a parent and as an educator. This is a very positive and easy to read book. As a parent Levin talks about how to handle the pressures that families and children feel from the media. She also provides guides to lessons for teachers to open discussions by even very young students. This book has tables and questions that can be used at home, in a classroom or with adult groups. There are many concrete suggestions for actions from sample lessons to templates for letters to TV stations. The first part of the book discusses the media culture and its effects on children. The chapters cover legal issues, research, how children experience the media and taking action. The second part deals mainly with classroom learning, but it is easily adaptable for parents. The third part deals with community action. But really the message of all of this text is very empowering, constantly offering suggestions for working towards positive change.

                    Book Description

One of the few American composers to earn an international reputation in both "classical" and popular music, Alec Wilder (1907-1980) was a true innovator in every phase of composition he chose to pursue. In addition, his life and associations in the world of music, theatre, literature, and the arts make for fascinating reading, and his own writings in these areas are witty and insightful. His many hundreds of musical compositions, ranging from chamber and orchestral music, to opera and ballet, theatre and film, and art songs and popular songs, are documented and annotated here in an exhaustive catalog of works. Included are detailed performance information and cross references to recordings in a discography section and reviews and commentary in a fully annotated bibliography of writings by and about the composer. The book also includes a lively biographical sketch capturing the sense and style of the composer and his times, a summary of archival materials held at the Eastman School of Music, an appendix of awards, a directory of music publishers, a chronological list of compositions, and an index. It is hoped that this thorough compendium to aid in the growing scholarly and musical interest in Wilder will serve to expose his work to wider audiences, while also helping to ferret out missing or unknown manuscripts given away to friends and performers by the composer.

                      Book Description

To most Jewish immigrants New York was America. Not many ventured as far as North Dakota at the turn of the century. Sophie Trupin writes of her father and other Jewish farmers who came to the northern plains: "Each was a Moses in his own right, leading his people out of the land of bondage--out of czarist Russia, out of anti-Semitic Poland, out of Romania and Galicia. Each was leading his family to a promised land; only this was no land flowing with milk and honey--no land of olive trees and vineyards." Dakota Diaspora adds a little-known chapter to the saga of the settlement of America. In a series of vignettes Sophie Tmpin recalls her childhood in "Nordokota," where her father built a sod house and farmed a quarter-section of rocky land before opening a butcher shop in the town of Wing. Against that background plays out the perennial conflict between her father; who had escaped the violent anti-Semitism of his native Russia and found here a man's freedom and dignity, and her mother; who felt "trapped, betrayed and helpless in this desolate land," far from her roots in the Old Country. But out of the struggle to bring in the harvest, survive the blizzards, and maintain a kosher home, a warm family life developed, as well as a sense of community with Jewish neighbors on scattered homesteads.

                      3 out of 5 stars Good Effort.......2005-03-23

Having spent 15 years in North Dakota, I was looking forward to some insights into the lives of Jewish migrants to a difficult world. This book describes some aspects of their experience, mainly fascinating domestic incidents well worth preserving. Unfortunately, the book lacks a scene-setting introduction or epilogue to place her story in Eastern European and Midwestern history. What happeened to Sopie and her family after these events? Who are the others mentioned in the acknowledgements? The Rachel Calof memoir, which closely parallels this one, is a model of its kind and can be highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Huh! Jews in North Dakota?.......2000-05-15

Dakota Diaspora is a lovely book which tells of the author's experiences as a child growing up Jewish on the prairie. From Russia to "Nordakota" Ms. Trupin attempts to understand her parents and their motivations for leaving the "known" for such a great "unknown." She draws mostly upon her own childhood memories, rather than gathering first-hand accounts from her parents. I found the ending somewhat disappointing because we don't find out if the author was able to maintain her Yiddishkeit, which her mother was so concerned that the children would lose without a strong Jewish community. A great book for those looking for a good biography. As a Torah-seeking Kansan, I appreciated reading about a turn-of-the-century Jewish family who departed from the well trodden paths to New York and Chicago in order to live on the land AND maintain a Torah lifestyle.
