Matsuo Basho (1644-94) is considered Japan's greatest haiku poet. Narrow Road to the Interior (Oku no Hosomichi) is his masterpiece. Ostensibly a chronological account of the poet's five-month journey in 1689 into the deep country north and west of the old capital, Edo, the work is in fact artful and carefully sculpted, rich in literary and Zen allusion and filled with great insights and vital rhythms. In Basho's Narrow Road: Spring and Autumn Passages, poet and translator Hiroaki Sato presents the complete work in English and examines the threads of history, geography, philosophy, and literature that are woven into Basho's exposition. He details in particular the extent to which Basho relied on the community of writers with whom he traveled and joined in linked verse (renga) poetry sessions, an example of which, A Farewell Gift to Sora, is included in this volume. In explaining how and why Basho made the literary choices he did, Sato shows how the poet was able to transform his passing observations into words that resonate across time and culture.

Matsuo Basho (1644-94) was a famous Japanese haiku poet. In 1689, he took a 1,233 mile journey across Japan. His travels lasted five months. He was joined by his friend Kawai Sora. Basho wrote about this trip. He titled it, "Oku No Hosomichi," which translates to "Narrow Road to the Interior." This story is considered to be a masterpiece of Japanese literature. He took four years to write it and revise it.

Basho started this trip when his house burned down. He had two goals. One goal was spiritual; it involved "poetic truth." The other goal was a practical one in which he would use his travels to become well known as a poet. Sora developed stomach problems and had to end his travels with Basho. Basho wrote a short piece for him. In the second part of this book, there is a translation of "A Farewell Gift to Sora."

Basho funded his travels with donations from wealthy friends and students. He felt that there were three types of poets. The first type is confused noisemakers. The second type is wealthy people who desire to write instead of gossip. The third type is poets who work hard at writing true poetry. These poets write to "soothe their heart." Basho was the third type of poet.

Hiroaki Sato includes annotations to go along with the writings. This adds richness to the story and helps explain more about the culture and what was happening at the time. I read the story first with the annotations to gain understanding of what I was reading; then I went back and reread the story by itself so that I could feel how it flowed. Without the annotations, I would have enjoyed Basho's story, but I would not have understood much of what was written. Sato also includes pages of notes and commentaries. This is a well researched piece. "Basho's Narrow Road" is a beautiful story about Basho's travels. In it he reflects on the beauty of the countryside and the spirit of the people that he encounters.

I recommend "Basho's Narrow Road" to people that enjoy Japanese poetry, especially Haiku. It would also be a great book to use for a college literature class. I really enjoyed Basho's journey.

This was the first time that I have read Basho's Narrow Road to Oku, snd I enjoyed it a great deal. Actually I read it twice this week. The first time I read through it I tried to read it without using the notes. I was lazy, so it came out that I really didn't enjoy what I was reading because I really didn't know what was going on throughout most of the book, so I read it again using the notes, and I got much more out of it. The annotations are on the left page while the actual text is on the right page, so there is no flipping to the back of the book every time that you need to look up something. There are endnotes that give more information about the haiku Basho writes. This is a very cool book, that gives the reader a glimpse at the literary world of japan back during the 17th century.

Love forever.......2002-03-24

Evrybody should read this book, and I mean it. Elsa talks about what make us humans beings, not just beings. Inconditional love, patience, solidarity, courage, dignity, laughs, empathy and more. This book is about loving and accepting people as it is, no judgments are needed. Elsa gives us a leson of humanity. She was the Mom/Ma that we all should have.

The book will make you laugh and cry, because hard experiences are written, but happy times are written too. What I really like of this book is the sincerity: what the hell do you care if I sleep with a woman or with a man? It shouldn't matter, but unfortunately it still does matter. That is the reason why we need more people like Elsa and more people reading this book.

Read it! It will make you a better person.

Unconditional Love.......2002-02-10

To read a book that is so intense and moving that it exudes deep emotions about a rare thing as unconditional love is overwhelming.

I must congratulate Elsa Burgess Flores on overcoming so much, and for staying brave, in spite of all of the heartache, and for being the kind of MOM every kid should have - loving, understaning, resourceful, patient, courageous and for holding out hope for those who are still here, and need of help.

God bless her work, and may God confort her heart, for her loss, which is so incredible, it's hard to imagine anyone more wonderful than her, who chose to make the very negative into the very positive.

Elsa, I know your sons are rooting for you from the other side! I am too!

Autumn Farewell Review.......2002-01-16

I have read this wonderful book three times; each time it moved and touched me deeply. I will probably read it again!

The contents of this book depicts a taste of everything that it takes to be a human being, to feel the intense love that continues after a tragedy and the terrible cruelty provoked by the ignorance and the lack of spirituality.

I believe that everyone should hear what Elsa has to say. Her book is much more than a book of memories. It is a diary of what happened to one mother and her two sons. The book is a lesson in humanity; a quality that so many of us forget and yet we call ourselves humans.

This is an excellent review of the e-commerce industry but don't be misled: it is NOT a how-to book in the classic sense; there are no step-by-step instructions or specific strategies. In this sense, the title is misleading. In all other respects it is a very good book.

Excellent! This book is a definite must read for anyone who is either currently investing in Internet and E-Commerce stocks or considering investing. How to Invest in E-Commerce Stocks, gives the reader not only the knowledge of the sectors that make up E-Commerce, but the market potential, trends and success factors. Mr. Burnham's analysis shows where the "Elephants" of the industry are, those companies such as Microsoft, IBM and Oracle, and whether they will have a negative or positive impact on these new emerging stocks. It is a jungle out there, so knowing where and how the niche stocks fit in and how they can avoid being trampled by the "Elephants" is of utmost importance.

This text offers great insight into the sectors comprising the world of E-Commerce. The chapters are well organized and contain great detail on trends and pitfalls to be aware of when selecting stocks. Though the book lists the stocks that comprise each sector, the book falls short with providing meaningful insight to what companies are well positioned currently or will be in the near future. This book is strong in evaluating the E-Commerce sectors but has limited value in identifying individual stock investment ideas.

If you're a card collector, this is the book for you. Every set imaginable is listed by card #, example photo, and value. It even shows card set variations. For example, the 1916 Altoona Tribune set is actually the same as the 1916 The Sporting New set with a different back. Misprint on page 152.......2002-10-16

It says on that page "It's got nothing to you with you". I think the sentence was supposed to read "It's got nothing to do with you". Also, on page 144 there is a reference to a real life man named Frank Garner. There was a fictional character on Dark Shadows by that name. Interesting!

I myself own quite a few books on The Beatles covering every subject that has to do with the Fab Four mostly reference books. so as I was purchasing another book on The Beatles I decided to "throw" a copy of Bill Harry's Beatles Encyclopedia in,When I got the pkg I started looking at the Beatles Encyclopedia and didn't put it down for a good hour. the point I'm getting at is that if your a collector or just want to know all there is about the Fab Four or anyone involved pick this book up!!!

COMPLETE AND FACTUAL!.......2001-12-19

Anyone who is a product of the 60's lived in an era where long hair was in, conformity was out, and the new wave of music from the Beatles was shaking the country from coast to coast. Boys copied the Beatles' music and hairstyle, while girls swooned, screamed and fainted as the world rocked to "I Wanna To Hold Your Hand." The Beatles had arrived! This book is a collector's item because it contains all sorts of trivia, facts and information on a group that will go down in the music hall of fame as one who spawned a new dawn in the music industry. It set the trend for many future pop singers. Paul, John, George and Ringo were names that sent shivers of anticipation up and down a teen-ager's spine.

I remember, as a teen, watching the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show on our new state-of-the-art, floor-model black and white Marconi television, and my father shaking his head in shocking amazement and lamenting , "What has the world come to?" Oddly enough, we are still asking that same question of our teen-aged children today.

Racked With Errors.......2005-08-14

This book has some good points. It provides interesting information about people involved with the Beatles.

However, it is racked with glaring errors that are EMBARRASSING! The worst ones are as follows:

1. George and Louise are listed as parents of the Harrison children. NOT TRUE! Harold and Louise were the senior Harrisons. George, the father of his own siblings? I DON'T THINK SO!

2. George's year of birth was given as 1944 when he was born in 1943. His brother Peter's year of birth was given as 1943 when he was born in 1940!

There is just no excuse for this kind of sloppy reporting. How this got past the editor's desk I'll never know.

This is an extremely comprehensive book that is riddled with errors. For someone who knew the Beatles so well it's amazing how many mistakes there are. True Beatles fans will have a hard time resisting the urge to correct them.

Onlyread if you know the beatles basics- this book is arranged in alphabetical order by last name of the person, etc. I especially reccommend this as a gift for beatles fanatics... you'll love it when they won't stop thanking you!

In this most excellent work, ( "Abbey Road to Zapple Records, A Beatles Encyclopedia") Judson Knight uses the "encyclopedia" format to take the reader on a guided passage through a virtual labyrinth of information, ... a ship navigated expertly across a small ocean of one brief, but incredibly productive segment of pop music history. Simply put, these are fascinating stories about the greatest rock band that ever lived, told by someone who knows how to write, and in a way that mere information blossoms into entertainment of the highest caliber.
In "Abbey Road...", Judson Knight profiles the background of each member of the group, their families, their amazing albums, films and songs that changed the world; and in doing so, he helps to explain what happened and why. Knight analyzes many of the Beatles' lyrics, answering questions that have persisted in the backs of our minds for decades (and perhaps ones you didn't even know you had), most importantly, "What made these guys and their creations so phenomenal?" Judson Knight does a superb job answering that question and hundreds of others in a way that reads like so many allegorical vignettes..... vignettes sometimes mired in the irony that occasionally there are questions which really have no answers.
There have been lots of books written about The Beatles. If you only read one, this should be the one.

GREAT investment for Beatles fans.......2002-12-06

My Beatles CDs sound ten times better thanks to this book. In addition to the songwriting, one of the things I love most about the Beatles is how lushly produced their music is. Thanks to this book, I can quickly look up any song title and get "the stories behind the songs".

Basically, this is a well-researched, well-written guide laid out in an incredibly useful format. A must.

Entertaining but not always accurate........2002-06-23

This book is definitely entertaining, I found out some new things about my favorite group. I noticed though, that there are many mistakes in information. Some of them were small, like mistakes in picture captions. Others stuck out like a sore thumb and would surely be noticed by a true Beatles fan. This is a good book for someone that is looking to learn about the Beatles, but it may not be the best choice for someone that already knows a great deal.

The rationale for this book by Judson Knight is one formulated by John Cage for any exegesis of music. It is, that a composer knows his work as a woodsman knows his path he has traced and retraced, while the listener is confronted by the same work as one is in the woods by a plant he has never seen before". Abbey Road to Zapple Records is the woodsmen's novices guide to the genesis if the Beatles' music. In enjoying, listening and studying the Beatles' work, this book is, what the Gilbert is for reading the Ulysses. Anyone who sincerely considers The Beatles` will have to take Knights' book at hand.
