Book Description

Rolling in Ditches with Shamans charts American anthropology in the 1920s through the life and work of one of the amateur scholars of the time, Jaime de Angulo (1887–1950). Although he earned a medical degree, de Angulo chose to live on an isolated ranch in Big Sur, California, where he participated fully in the lives of the people who were his ethnographic informants. The period of his most extensive research coincides almost perfectly with the professionalization of anthropology, and de Angulo provides a link between those who are generally recognized as the most important figures of the day: Franz Boas, Alfred Kroeber, and Edward Sapir.

The fields of salvage ethnography and linguistics, which Boas emphasized, were aimed at recording the culture, language, and myths of the Native groups before they became completely acculturated. In keeping with these dictates, de Angulo recorded data from thirty groups, mostly in California, which otherwise might have been lost. In an unusual move for that time, he also wrote fiction and poetry describing the modern lives of the people he studied, something of little interest to Boas but of great interest today. His most enduring work is Indian Tales, a fictional synthesis of myths learned from various California Indians. De Angulo’s range of interests, originality, and expertise exemplified the curiosity and brilliance of those who pioneered American anthropology at this time.

4 out of 5 stars Ancestral Figure.......2005-12-21

To many of us who were anthropology students in Berkeley in the 60s, Jaime de Angulo was a mythic ancestor figure. He not only did excellent linguistic ethnography; he was also a leading candidate for the original Berkeley hippie. He lived a wild and erratic life, on the fringes of anthropology and literature; among other things, he was probably the main figure in the discovery of Big Sur and its development as a countercultural center. At the same time, he was helping to save Native American languages from extinction.
This book focuses on his linguistic research in the context of institutionalizing (a more accurate word than "professionalization" here) anthropology and linguistics in early 20th century America. De Angulo worked with or for the great figures in this movement: Franz Boas, A. L. Kroeber, Edward Sapir. All recognized de Angulo's genius and erratic ways. They provided him with money for research, and worked mightily to pry manuscripts out of him. In the end, he published an amazing amount (including novels and poetry) for someone who never had a regular academic appointment, and he left in manuscript a far vaster store. A tragic accident that took his son's life and almost took his as well interrupted de Angulo's career; he never quite rallied. In the end, he was part of a large number of gifted non-academics or para-academics ("amateurs" doesn't get it) who contributed mightily to anthropology.
Boas, Kroeber, Sapir and their group lived primarily to save what they could of Native American languages and cultures, before these disappeared. Many have tragically died out now; most Native Californian languages are extinct, and what we know of them is what those scholars recorded. Other languages survive, thanks partly to the ongoing efforts of scholars in the Boasian tradition. One of Boas' most important agendas was training Native American linguists and anthropologists, and this continues.
What animated all these diverse individuals was a tremendous concern for real people, and thus for the most important productions of the human spirit--language, literature, music, ritual, culture in all its wonderful and beautiful ways.
Today, anthropology has been taken over by a different breed. Far too much contemporary ethnography consists of narcissistic self-storying, arid elitist wordgames based loosely on misunderstood French philosophy, and denunciation of a whole range of vague, poorly defined evils ranging from "globalization" to "the touristic gaze." Concern for real people and their finest creations is not only rare--it is actually condemned in some quarters as "exoticism" or "salvage ethnography." A noble but sadly inadequate effort is devoted to saving languages--now dying out, worldwide, so fast that the world's 6800 languages may be reduced to a few hundred in the 22nd century.
Reading this book, with its portrayal of heroic efforts, may inspire a few souls to carry on the work.
The book is a solid scholarly work in its own right, but is marred by some repetition and dryness, and by perhaps an excessive tendency to avoid judgement. The goal of remaining nonjudgmental is desirable, given the above, but surely it is carried to extremes when we are given no real evaluation of the quality of de Angulo's work. Even his debate with Paul Radin over the phonemicization of Patwin is left unresolved here, though someone must have decided long ago who was right (if either was). Even so, de Angulo emerges powerfully from the book, a more-than-life-sized figure, totemic and mythic in an age of heroes that now seems as remote and Powerful (with a capital P) as the time of Coyote Himself.

Book Description

The adolescent years can sometimes be trying, but are especially difficult for parents of a teenager with depression. Depression is a real and serious condition that can derail lives and put a child at risk. HELPING YOUR TEENAGER BEAT DEPRESSION offers parents a strategy that enables them to become active partners in the treatment of their child's depression.

Chapters begin with an overview of teenage mood problems followed by an explanation of the authors' unique treatment approach, known by the acronym, LEEAPP (LEAP for short). Based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-a recognized and successful problem-solving strategy for changing distorted behaviors and thoughts-LEAP offers parents a plan to change a troublesome situation or negative pattern of interaction with their teen. Parents first identify what behavior (e.g. refusing to get out of bed) or attitude (e.g. unprovoked anger) they want to change, then create a LEAP plan to:

LABEL their own thoughts and emotions related to their teen's behavior

EMPATHIZE with their teen's perspective

EXPLORE ways to respond to this perspective

APPLY an alternative way to respond

PICK a follow-up time to evaluate the result

PLAN ahead for the next step

The LEAP approach can be used by parents to address minor mood problems and reduce the risk of relapse, and in conjunction with professional therapy for more serious depressive disorders. The commitment is minimal--perhaps 10-20 minutes per week--and the benefits can be substantial. Most families begin to see improvement in their child's mood and interactions after employing the LEAP approach for 6 weeks.

Case studies throughout the book present a variety of situations and illustrate how to use this method to tackle mood problems. Exercises and checklists help parents monitor progress and be effective in improving their teen's outlook.

This book was okay, but the process really didn't help with our child's depression.

5 out of 5 stars Helping Teens and their Families Cope with Depression.......2004-10-01

Coping with a depressed teen is difficult for many parents to accept, but not dealing with it can lead to behavioral problems, the need for therapy or hospitalization - even the chilling but all-too-common outcome of suicide. Although they rarely acknowledge it, teens do greatly depend on their parents for support. Studies show that when parents are closely involved during therapy and professional treatment the results improve dramatically. This book supplies valuable information and advice, and outlines a concise, problem-solving plan of action that could make a big difference in kids' lives. The authors begin by explaining the difference between sadness and depression, relating real-life case studies of various types of depression, and including exercises and check lists to help readers make determinations and record progress. They continually stress the importance of family interaction and communication, describing the "family circle" concept and suggesting how to develop healthy patterns. Always stressing that families need to "label" and discuss depression, and that is nothing to be ashamed of, the authors give suggestions for coping with challenges that can occur at school and with friends. They also offer tips on medications and their affects, and how to deal with crises that may arise during treatment. This is an important, helpful book, especially in these fast-paced and confusing times. While debates rage about treatments and the safety of new anti-depressant drugs, this book stands out as a compassionate, valuable resource for parents and kids - some of whom are battling to survive.

If there is a toddler in your life, you are going to love this book of knitting patterns. The sweaters are adorable! And the patterns are not terribly difficult. Have fun!

4 out of 5 stars Adorable Knits for Tiny Tots/Errata.......2007-03-13

I just wanted to mention that editors are not the designers. Yes, people make mistakes, including editors/publishers of designer's books, and this one is no exception. Easily solved in this case, just call the number on the book( back cover) and they will speedily( less than a fifteen minutes for me) e-mail you the errata page. They will also continue to be there for help if you find another problem that was not addressed yet. Perhaps they are in contact with the authors and can do that, better than we could.
I've done that with another book as well, "Little Badger Knits" and got an immediate reply and help from the publishers.
I would not write off a book because of mistakes that can easily be solved.
I am looking forward to knitting from this book and it certainly does have "adorable knits" in it!

3 out of 5 stars adorable knits for tots.......2007-02-18

i agree that the sweaters are adorable but as one other reviewer stated that there were a lot of loose ends on the back side. the only one that i really liked was the front cover. i made it for my granddaughter who was supposed to be born on july 4th so i thought that it would be cute in red white and blue--which it is. and i will probably make it for my niece who is also expecting on july 4th this coming year. but after trying some of the other patterns that will be the only sweater i make from this book.

    1 out of 5 stars FRUSTRATION!.......2007-02-01

I am also an experienced knitter and have done quite a bit of cable work, but I have found the Robin Hood Jacket extremely frustrating. I feel like the author was too lazy to put everything into one graph or set of instructions. Instead I spend my time flipping pages trying to figure out where I am in the regular row and where I am in the cable rows. I have to force myself to pick up this project. If I hadn't put so much money into the yarn I would probably chuck it. I will not make another project from this book. I should have read the reviews before buying.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart.......2007-01-19

    1. This book has beautiful projects.
    2. They are not all easy.
    3. I am a very experienced knitter.
    4. I am making the dots and stripes baby blanket as a gift for my niece.
    5. I am eliminating the dots because if there was another color change or another bobbin on my needles (12!) I was going to scream and tear my hair out. There is a slight possibility that I may duplicate-stitch them in when/if I'm done.
    6. There are so many ends to weave in that the reverse side will have to be backed with fabric or another knit piece in order to make it givable.
    7. I doubt I will try to make another project from this book, but if the author reads this and thinks maybe I'm going about it all the wrong way, I'd appreciate an e-mail. I want to like it, I really do.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!!!.......2006-08-30

Gosh, this was a pleasant book to read. The only negative I recall was the lack of detailed information about all of the photographs scattered throughout the book. I admit I was hoping to read a little more about some of the business failures and reasons why some firearms did not go into production. However, we don't need to focus in on the negative when it comes to Mr. Ruger's wonderful life! Other than my desire to want a little more description about the photographs and business dealings, this was an absolutely wonderful book on Mr. Ruger.

Here is a poignant account of reggae icon Bob Marley (1945-1980) told in the lyrical but earthytones of his devoted mother.

5 out of 5 stars Cedella Marley Booker: Strength of Bob.......2007-06-11

I read this book in ONE DAY! It is an incredible book! You get such an understanding of Bob Marley (born: Nesta Robert Marley) that you are enveloped into the life of this musical legend! Once you read this book, you know exactly where Bob Marley got his character and his strength--from his mother. Her account of how she watched her son die from cancer is tearjerking and for me was personal, as I saw my mother waste away from cancer. It is truly the greatest and best account of the life of Bob Marley ever written and die-hard Marley fans should own this book at all cost! This literally is as close to Bob Marley anyone will ever get to understanding the man behind the music.

          5 out of 5 stars Important perspective.......2006-07-19

I really enjoyed this book from a perspective of a mother, supporter and oracle sharing her experience, her truths and beliefs with insertions of Jamaican patois about her life and Bob's life.

Cedella describes the unique relationship between she and "Captain", a common tale of race, power, and lust in colonial Caribbean. She discusses the trials and tribulations that helped her rear Bob and how her perserverance helped Bob discover his own voice. Cedella was a powerful, vocal and honest woman whose observations of Bob's life gives a compelling spin on how women raise men in the Caribbean and how her technqiues are typical of Displaced African women throughout the globe.

For the true Bob Marley spiritual connection, I think this book is vital. Very rarely do we read the perspective of the family especially for Black heroes. All too often peripheral, white, powerful authors are given access to publish print and make money off of our spiritual prophets and artists.

I fully support more books like this that tell the tale of Black women, men and children via our experiences, using our language and depicting vivid imagery that can transplant us to their space and time.

          3 out of 5 stars Conflictual.......2006-02-27

I guess this book was okay, however, I've read other books on Bob Marley and his mother's version seems very bias towards her son and herself looking good. She totally downplays his infidelites as a man will do what a man will do but focuses on Rita Marley getting pregnant with another man's baby. She mentioned this numerous times in the book giving this as one main reason for conflict between Bob and Rita. She focuses on Rita being unfaithful but barely talks about the numerous children he had outside his marriage. She states her son was tormented about this child and that he would divorce Rita if he found out it was not his. She later claims Rita did tell him that this was not his child- he never got a divorce. I read Rita's version in No Woman, No Cry and tend to somewhat believe that version of events a lot better. Other than the conflictual information and her focusing on herself a lot, it was an okay read.

          4 out of 5 stars The Journey.......2005-08-22

This is a compelling book. I agree with the reviewer who said that at the beginning of the book there was more about Cedella and her background than about Bob Marley, but the end justified the means. You get to know and understand Cedella Marley as her son takes her through her journey. Her description of "Nesta's" last months are heart wrenching. Her voice as a mother comes through - I was sobbing at the end. But she added credit where credit is due namely to Chris Blackwell, when all of Marley's "entourage" left after his death, Blackwell remained to ask what was needed and to make sure Cedella would be taken care of for the rest of her life. Not many people are aware of Blackwell's genuine care and concern.
As I kept reading throughout the book, I was becoming more aware of how beautifully written her words are and how strong her love is for "Nesta" and all of her family.
This is, indeed, a beautiful book and one that belongs in everyone's collection of all that is written about Nesta Robert Marley.

          3 out of 5 stars A Decent Book.......2004-06-01

... This book is much different than most biographies because it is written by the subject's actual mother. Readers are allowed to view Marley in the eyes of his mom rather than in the eyes of a fan or historian. The book does a decent job of retelling Marley's life and rise to international fame. It is an interesting read and does not take very long as it is rather short.
... One thing I did not like about the book was the fact that at times, it begins to feel like more of a autobiography about Bob's mother than about him. The book, in fact, begins with her childhood. It is a good twenty minutes before Bob Marley is even introduced: something I find strange in a biography that is supposed to be about him. Once you make it through these sections however, the author does try to tie them into ordeals and stories that focus on Bob.
... The vast selections of pictures from Bob's childhood were both a positive and a negative. It was nice to have access to visuals of all the people talked about in the book. It makes it easier to picture people when you know what they look like. It was annoying, however, to be stopped in the middle of a sentence by 8 to 10 pages of pictures. By the time you flipped through them you would have to flip back and try to remember what fragment you had read to try and complete the sentence.

          Book Description

Yehuda Nir was nine years old when his father was shot dead by German soldiers in a mass execution of Jewish men in their Polish town. Yehuda, along with his mother and teenage sister, escaped with the aid of false documents. It was 1941--the Holocaust was gaining a grim momentum. The family plunged into what would be four long, harrowing years disguised as Catholics. Never knowing if each day of hiding in the open would be his last, Yehuda was often forced to separate from his mother and sister, live on dogs and mice, hide in sewers, and live in utter chaos.

4 out of 5 stars A World War II Memoir.......2004-06-01

At just nine years old, Germany had invaded Poland, in 1939, during the World War II. Poland was the home country of Yehuda Nir. By 1941, Nir's father was arrested. Soon after the Germans executed him along with many innocent people. When Nir was 11 years old, he and his mother and his teenage sister Lala, were forced to move to one country to another, disguised as Polish Catholics, to be able to survive in that dangerous period of time. One thing that I liked about this book, was that it was well described. I was able to picture most of the scenes from the book. In my senior English class, we learned how to write essays describing the scenes of out topics very well. So everyone would have an image well described in their minds of what we were talking about. This book is a good example of explaining things clearly. Although it was a sad, brutal, scary, dramatically, bloody book, it was a good reading book.
Another thing that I liked about this book, was that it was well understanding. In the cover of the book there is a little boy (who it is Nir,) I thought that it was going to be a little kids book. When I started to read more and more I learned that it is actually a book for a more mature minded audience. Although the book started when Nir was a kid, throughout the book I learned that he wasn't able to have a normal childhood. At a young age he became 'the man of the house.' At this time Hitler was trying to conquest most of the world. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to know how life was at this time of life.
