S.A. Stockwell was a politician ahead of his time. From before the turn of the century, he held office into the 1930s and strove to better Minnesota and its people by supporting women's rights, improving schools and labor conditions, revamping tax laws, and fighting for African-Americans.

Jacob B. 'Billy' Mathews performed a leading role in what is arguably the most notorious chapter in the history of the American West: New Mexico's Lincoln County War of the 1870s. In carrying out orders from some of the primary figures in the conflict, namely J.J. 'Jimmy' Dolan or Sheriff William Brady, Mathews took part in pactically all of the significant events of the war.

What is known about his life before the Lincoln County War is quite meager, and much of what has been published about him is incorrect. The author seeks to rectify the inaccuracies as well as to provide new information on his life both before and after the Lincoln County War.

Mathews' primary claim to fame is that he was the sheriff's chief deputy in command of the posse that shot down John Henry Tunstall on February 18, 1878, thereby igniting the most celebrated event in Lincoln County's history. In one aspect, he is unique among all of the participants in this conflict--he survived the war and lived to die a natural death of old age.

After the Lincoln conflict, Mathews became a distinguished pioneer in the establishment of big-time cattle ranching in the Peasco Valley and farming in the Pecos Valley of Southeast New Mexico

I have every book there is on collecting charms and charm bracelets. This book is the best written, contains the best history, best advertisements, etc. The book has over 300 color pictures of charms, bracelets and advertisements. Unlike other books, this one gives equal time to both gold and silver charms and bracelets. You get a wonderful history of charms, charm bracelets and how they are made - decade by decade.

What really sold me on this lovely book is the fact that it has lots of additional information. There is an appendix explaining metal markings and one showing pictures of actual metal markings with explanations. You also get a nice glossary of frequently used terms, a bibliography, and a wonderful index.

If you want to know the history of charms and charm bracelets, their metal markings, and you can only get one book - get this one. This is great for collectors and for people who actually sell charms and bracelets. The author has done an outstanding job of compiling a lot of useful information and photographs in a wonderful, easy to read guide to the world of charms and charm bracelets.

If you want to make some easy things for Christmas, this is the book for quilters (and non-quilters alike) to check out. I have it and love it! I've also bought it for Christmas gifts. (The book looks pretty on the coffeetable at Christmas, too.) Jinny shows you how to make table runners, placemats, tree skirts, wearable skirts, etc., using border prints. She makes Colonial Williamsburg-like decorations using pine cones, apples, and nuts--and from things she finds in her backyard. You can almost smell the apple cider simmering on the fireplace. A shtetl memoir of a world destroyed .......2006-12-29

David Zagier wrote this book over a period of sixty years. It was first drafted in the thirties and finished only sixty years later. It tells of his childhood shtetl which was destroyed by the Nazis. He tells of his childhood there , the world of his parents. He attempts to reconstruct a world lost.
This is a clearly written memoir and it tells its story in a good way. There were unfortunately hundreds of other such shtetls who had no one to tell their story, and keep alive if only on the page, those characters and personalities who made their world so colorful.
This is a valuable highly readable memoir.
