When Charles and Iola Medd left Thailand in June of 1957 they expected to return. For two years they had lived and worked together in the northeastern city of Nakhorn Rachisma for the United States Information Agency. Two for the price of one it was in those days! Prior to their leaving Thailand USIA Bangkok told Charles they wanted the Medds to return at the conclusion of their home leave. They were to be reassigned to Chiang Mai, a lovely city in the northern part of the country. USIA Washington however had different plans for the Medds. Charles learned he had been assigned to Nagasaki, a city located on the island of Kyushu in southwestern Japan. Surprises such as this were a part of Foreign Service life and this was the life the Medds had chosen. When their leave came to an end the Medds packed their bags, and together with their 17-month old daughter and 6-weeks old son they said goodbye to their family and friends, and headed westÂ— back across the Pacific to Japan.

Excellent introduction with detailed solutions.......1999-04-27

I've watched the words "Shareholder Value" creep into our business vocabulary over the past decade or so, and I've heard many explanations of how to optimize it. Unfortunately, there about as many definitions and techniques for measuring and managing it as there are books on the subject. I've read many of these other texts and worked with the other consultants Mr. Knight mentions in his book. But none of them have approached the precision and clarity of this book. Mr Knight starts with why management should understand the shareholder's needs and the proper methods for addressing those needs, then he takes the reader logically through all the steps (including the subtle nuances) of implementing such a program. There is no more comprehensive nor better written book on this subject on the market. If only Mr. Knight had written his book 10 years ago, many of us would have been saved from endless hours of vague and confusing meetings about what we were really trying to accomplish.

A must read book for companies striving for value creation.......1998-07-14

This book shows how to develop and implement strategies regarding value creation for shareholders. It has a very good mix of theory and business cases. The core aspect of this book is the theory behind the imperative link of: Strategic Planning, Budgeting, Financial Reporting and Incentive Compensation. This theory is tested against many sucessful business cases. The author also shows why some companies fail after incomplete or wrong assumptions on the value based management implementation.

Poor Quality product.......2005-10-10

Quality of this book was pretty poor, even thought the descriptions online stated only to have highlighting in it. At the same time didn't indicated if it was a lot of highlighting or little, which ended up to be in a pretty bad condition with the page quality being warn down and there were so much writing in almost every page and the highlighting was pretty extensive. The price that was asking for and sold to me was not fair, for the poor quality of this book.

This book is really terrific, but if want to save a little money, I'd recommend not buying it. Instead, drive/fly from wherever you live and go to Dr. Carroll's lectures, because they're word for word what's in the book.

This book is a fascinating collection of antique advertisements for entertainment acts ranging from the whimsical to the bizarre. The broadsides themselves are surprisingly readable and Jay's commentary illuminates the subject matter in a way that sheds light on multiple facets of the social context the broadsides existed within. It's an art book, an intriguing work of history, a compendium of the bizarre, a chronicle of advertising techniques, and a unique stage door view on just exactly what humans will define as "entertaining".

An Extraordinary Exhibition of Showbills.......2005-08-27

If you ever have a chance for a collector to show his collection, you run the risk of being terribly bored. Unless you yourself collect stamps, coins, thimbles, Hummel figurines, or Corvettes, you are unlikely to sympathize with the delight the collector takes in his hoard. Ricky Jay is a fascinating man; he is a master magician, a historian of show business (especially of novelty acts), and an actor in David Mamet's movies. He collects something few others do: showbills for the jugglers, magicians, animal acts, ventriloquists, and other eccentric and novelty performances through almost four centuries. Don't worry, it is far from boring. Around eighty of his specimens are on display in a large format book, _Extraordinary Exhibitions: The Wonderful Remains of an Enormous Head, the Whimsiphusicon & Death to the Savage Unitarians_ (Quantuck Lane Press). The broadsides are funny and beautiful, and Jay's learned and enthusiastic commentary about each one is on the page facing each specimen. It is all thoroughly entertaining, and like any show advertising, the posters make you wonder if the acts are really as described. There is so much verbal and graphic hyperbole on display here that a bit of incredulity is only sensible, but still: who, if confronted by an announcement for Signor Cappelli and his Learned Cats, with assurances that after he introduces his cats to the audience, they will "beat a drum, turn a spit, grind knives, strike upon an anvil, roast coffee, ring bells, set a piece of Machinery in motion to grind rice in the Italian manner with many other astonishing exercises", who, I say, would let incredulity overcome a wish to get a peek at the show?

Let me just take the three displays mentioned in the subtitle. "Wonderful Remains of an Enormous Head" were on display in London around 1840, and it was, if the description is to be believed, truly enormous, eighteen by seven feet, and weighing 1,700 pounds. What the head was, we do not know; one observer said it was likely that of a whale, and another said it was an obviously gigantic bird, fish, or lizard. The Whimsiphusicon had one of those fanciful names showmen of the 19th century enjoyed. It is advertised on a playbill for the ventriloquist Christopher Lee Sugg in 1816. Jay says, "Sugg, like a number of early magicians, was a proponent of theatrical neologism used to entice, or more likely confuse, the public." Indeed, Sugg explained on the playbill that the device was also dubbed "The Wandering Melodistical" and was a "Pill to Banish Melancholy," but it is safe to say he didn't give any secrets away until the performance. "Death to the Savage Unitarians" is on an Argentinean bill from 1842, and does not refer to the members of the religious sect, but to the country's Unitarian political group who favored a liberal rule of law and a strong central Argentinean government. They opposed the dictator Juan Manuel Rosas, and probably the phrase was included by the publicist who had drawn up the bill to ensure it would not offend the dictator. It caps an ad for "Robert and His Wife" who did magic and juggling, including "the new trick of the ceramic plates that will very much please the spectators" and "the lovely balancing act of the two dogs dressed as a Marquesa and a Marquis."

There are scores of other playbills for acts in this beautifully produced book that shows some astonishing curiosities, well annotated by the erudite collector himself. It is full of jolly whimsy, for every act depicted is shown at its best, even though it might be promising more than it could actually produce. There is a taint of regret, here, though, on every page. As the playbills frequently remind us, the like of these productions will never be seen again. Oh, how I would love to see Daniel Wildman, for instance, the first and foremost equestrian apiarist of two hundred years ago, who rode his horse standing up while five swarms of bees covered his face, swarms which would thereupon alight on specific locations the performer designated by his command.

This is a wonderful book by a truly genius author. Also, make sure you put Ricky Jay's other books on your list. He has a great mind and his books are phenomenal!

Ricky Jay is a national treasure. He's the head curator of a continuing collection of the curious, marginal, sometimes macabre but always compelling congregation of entertainers who have slipped through the trapdoor of time's stage. Excellent reference for the first-time mother-to-be.......2004-12-31

I first encountered this book when I was expecting my son (born in 1975). The format was easy to read, informative and positive in its approach. I passed copies to my younger sisters, and (most recently) my sister-in-law, so that they could benfit from the information it contained. The book is well-written, clear and factual--after all, Dr.Llewellyn-Jones IS a respected physician! There are sketches and explanations throughout. This is one book which is a "must read" for any mother-to-be (and her husband). I highly recommend it.

This may be the only book you'll ever need on Neil Young. Then again, there is always more to Neil than we know...

For an entirely different but excellent analysis of Neil Young's music and personality, read "Neil Young and The Poetics of Energy" by WILLIAM ECHARD

this is the best and most complete and accurate book about Neil that you will ever read. Why buy the others as i have read all and this is the only book,if you really want to know about shakey neil......

This might be a pleasing read-along for the casual collector. Rogan provides short blurbs for each song, including a little background information on each, and quotes from (unsourced) interviews. Many Neil Young fans could write this book in a weekend alone with a stereo and a pot of coffee.

As a "Guide" though, this book is not "Complete". Neil Young has a few unreleased albums (like "Chrome Dreams", which went as far as an acetate) and unrecorded tunes (like "No One Seems To Know"). Rogan's book doesn't cover these. Heavyweight collectors will also be dissatisfied with lack of information on various releases. Not to mention, if I may be so gauche, bootlegs.

And realisticly you can buy a dozen record guides (and read dozens more online) that include writeups of Young's available albums.

Comprehensive look at the music.......2000-06-24

This book covers all of Neil's commercially releasesd music from Buffalo Springfield through Mirror Ball. Nothing earth shattering here and the book focuses entirely on the music and is NOT a biography but it is a nice little book.

It is not so much something to sit down and read as it is a reference guide. It would be a great reference guide for someone who is still looking to complete a Neil Young collection. Every song Neil released in that period (1966-1995)is listed and briefly reviewed. The book is organized chronologically by date of album (CD) release and has an index which makes it handy.

This book brings together the horrifying real-life stories of women who woke up one day to discover that they were not who they thought they were. The government changed and sud-denly they no longer had the right kind of blood, name, family background, or physical features to be considered a mem-ber of society, city, or state. These stories are from Ger-man women who were partners in Jewish-Christian 'mixed marr-iages' and were subsequently persecuted under the Nuremberg laws. These mischling-half-breeds, as Hitler called them-have often been passed over in studies of the Holocaust, perhaps because they are not considered 'real Jews.' But many of these women are still struggling with the nightmares of the Third Reich and the Holo-caust, the loss of family in concentration camps, and with their own identity-divided between their Jewish and Christian roots. Often their Jewish background was revealed to them only after Hitler's laws were passed. Great resource for the classroom!.......2006-03-11

Unlike Schindler's List, in Divided Lives, a book by Cynthia Crane, the reader is able to put a face with a name and learn about personal experiences before, during, and after the war. No longer are these people just statistics, but they are actual people who had a life that was turned upside down by the Holocaust. Divided Lives is the type of resource that could be used in schools, especially high school, to show the truth about what Holocaust victims went through day after day and the effects it had on the rest of their lives. Divided Lives not only shows students about the uniqueness of this period in history, but children can also connect on an emotional level and learn an appreciation for their own lives and the human race.

Insights can be uplifting .......2005-04-15

I remember reading a poem back when I was a boy about the poet's life in the segregation era south that his father white and his mother black and being subjected to bigots both black and white. Somehow the meaning felt true while reading this book.

From the little boy who was beaten by nazi teachers because his father was Jewish, to the little girl whose Jewish father fled to America but sent divorce papers to his gentile wife, the stories here are in many ways far from pleasant. But not all the perpetrators are from the same group. A husband kicked out of the nazi party because of his wife's heritage, balanced against that of a girl kicked out of the BDM because of her heritage, only to discover after moving into in her new town the local BDM leadress telling her she was going to be in the BDM whether she liked or not 'unofficially'. A girl whose policeman father was driven mad by the stress and murdered by the T4 fiends to the loss of so many Jewish relatives by each, this is a very insightful book.

Life was not happy for these women when they were girls. Being prevented form joining the BDM because of their heritage or kicked out if the BDM found out. Being kept out of many things. Being stuck in the middle of nazi germany with less than politically correct heritage under allied bombs. Somehow they survived to tell their stories.

I didn't think it was up the the standards of Hitler's Jewish Soldiers, but that book drew from a larger pool of individuals.
But within its small scale, it's pretty good.

After reading this accumulation of sensitive and very private stories by the subjects still alive in Germany, I recommended to the author that this book should be required reading in high schools across the USA.
The women who dared have their stories told survived an unbelievable period in German history in the 1930s and 40s. Reading the painful recollections of the personal experiences of the subject Jewish women under the domination of the Third Reich reveals an awful human experiment too horrible to fully understand, but important that it be revealed.
Readers will not be disappointed in the revelations extracted by the author, who has a personal connection to this period in history. Her father was a fraternity brother of mine, and I only recently learned of the humiliations he suffered before he escaped to the United states at age ten. Humiliations that have affected him ever since.
The author learned why her maiden name isn't the same as her father's original last name. And that triggered the quest to learn more, and thus the research in Germany and this book.

Riviting Stories.......2004-01-21

"Divides Lives" tells the stories of woman living a in a real life "twilight zone" during the Third Reich. Dr. Crane brings her characters to life and the reader is swept into their confusing and frightening world. I am not particularly enamored by Holocaust literature. I have had my fill of books, articles and movies which portray the horrors of the camps. However, this book is different. These stories would stand by themselves regardless of the setting. The implications for our modern world, alluded to in the author's musings, are staggering. Anyone who enjoys short stories or biographies will absolutely love this book. I can hardly wait for Dr. Crane's next work.

Brings Jewish persecution to life........2001-03-07

Many of the mischling women interviewed in this book state that the young people of today, especially Americans don't have any feeling whatsoever for what happened in WWII. Sadly, they are correct in that we learn about the war, but we don't learn about real life during the war. Facts and technical outlines of battles can only give one the surface of the struggle. To dig deeper, you need to read first person accounts such as the ones given in this book...stories of persecution and oppression that will make the war seem all too real. The paper thin line of distinction between Germans and Jews comes to life here with the children of Jewish/Christian parents who are ranked according to the amount of Jewish blood they carry...first degree half-Jew or second degree quarter-Jew. Most are saved from the concentration camps by their affiliation with their Aryan (German) family, but all suffer some amount of anti-semitism and persecution under the Third Reich. This is a revealing portrait of the fate of the mischlinge, a people who are often forgotten in the gruesome and humiliating saga of the holocaust.
