Price Daniel was elected to more high offices than anyone in Texas history. He was speaker of the Texas House, attorney general, U.S. senator, governor, and supreme court justice. He also served in the cabinet of his Senate colleague, President Lyndon Johnson, who described Daniel as "the soul of honor." A personal friend of almost every president dating back to Harry Truman, Daniel left significant footprints across American history. He was credited with winning the largest states' rights settlement in United States history, was responsible for ridding Texas of organized gambling, argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in one of the landmark cases of the civil rights movement, nearly succeeded in his attempt to abolish the electoral college as the method of electing presidents, was on the inside loop of many critical decisions which were made during the Vietnam War, led the largest narcotics investigation in the nation's history and, in the meantime, led in the passage of more legislation than any other governor in Texas history.

The last of old-time Texas governors, the Dayton-born maverick was in his prime with an unlit cigar clamped loosely between teeth and a fitted hat perched atop his head. He was one of several Baylor University graduates to serve as governor.

Unbiased relation.......2001-11-14

A fifth grader will be tasked to write a book report on some prominent figure from the history of the United States. A Jr. High student will be given the same assignment and asked to elaborate and draw conclusions about that person on their own. A graduating senior will also write their thesis on someone of their choice, but will be forced to check the accuracy of the authors they reference in their bibliography.

Dan Murph's book about Price Daniel is the book that these students will choose. The intimate knowledge that the author has of one "Texas Giant" is remarkable and is not merely a book of words organized into neat little paragraphs. Rather, Dan Murph has provided unbiased insight into one man's life and has clearly shown how one man can make a difference.

What ifs drive more storylines than a Star Trek sequel. The author's description paints a vivid landscape for the reader to draw his/her conclusion with regards to, "What if the Electoral College had been done away with?" Would it change the introduction by George Bush? What if...What if...What if? The answers are within the pages of this book.

This audiobook was quite enjoyable. I learned some new things about stocks. They did not cover all of the Stock Exchanges such as The Boston Stock Exchange, Chicago Stock Exchange, among others. Most discussion was based on Amex and NYSE. I recommend this audiobook. I also recommend investing for dummies as that also has a good and interesting overview of the stock market and its history. I look forward to other audio books from instant genius. I hope they do some on history, math, computers, music, home improvement, balancing a budget, business and management, and an Owners Manual for Men with Wives. Get Instant Genius, The Cheat Sheets of Culture: The Stock Market, I am sure you will like it.

This is just one of several titles in the "Instant Genius" audiotape collection, and like all others is an excellent and consise recap of interesting topics. The tapes are superbly written, well-narrated and very educational. You'll learn a lot without information overload, and it's fun to share and pass on your new knowledge to friends, colleagues, etc. The tapes also make terrific gifts. I highly recommend not just stock market, but all of the "Instant Genius" titles for quick knowledge!

Englishman Owen Jones first published his monument to design, the Grammar of Ornament, in 1856. It was originally published in installments for subscribers. Jones's illustrated plates and design motifs drew from nineteen different cultures including the ornament of Oceania, Rome, Byzantium, ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Moorish Spain.

The Grammar was adapted to architectural decoration, fabrics, textiles, tile design, furniture and wallpaper during the second half of the nineteenth century. It has remained influential among designers worldwide.

The quirky colorways are decidedly of another era and worthy of study. I have effectively used them to thwack my creativity out of occasional dead ends or potholes. This is a respected, classic reference. It is deserving of space in every designer's reference library.

FREE use of graphics is permitted ... it is a great resource for web designers. It has great designs and textures which, if used properly, can really enhance your website. A lot of the graphics can make for lovely textures and backgrounds. The graphics are from history .... ornaments from Oceania, Egypt, Greek, Pompeian, Roman, Byzantine, Arabian, Turkish, Moorish, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Celtic, Medieval, Renaissance, Italian ... loads of Ornaments from all over. A must buy IMO!

This detailed study of the earliest opera to have gained a foothold in the modern repertoire has three main sections, with contributions from experts on various aspects of the opera's history and performance.

The book begins with a historical section, in which all the known evidence about the creation and early performances of "Orfeo" is drawn together and evaluated. The first chapter recounts the story of the early Mantuan performances, with the aid of hitherto unpublished contemporary correspondence (the texts of the letters are given, in Italian and English, in an appendix). The sources of the libretto are studied in this section, and the text of the original ending of the opera is given together with an English translation. This section ends with a detailed analytical synopsis of the opera, which considers (among other points) the reasons for believing that the opera was originally staged without breaks between the acts, and the implications of this for performers and critics today.

The second section of the book includes a detailed history of the rediscovery of the opera; an influential essay on the opera by Joseph Kerman is reprinted here, together with a review by Romain Rolland of the first modern performance of "Orfeo." The final section includes essays by a conductor and a producer who have staged notable performances of the opera in recent years. They explain their approaches to the work, and offer solutions to some of the problems that it poses in performance.

A successful expansion of his lecture series at Harvard, Thomas Kelly's First Nights chronicles the events leading to the first performances of five enduring masterpieces. He places Monteverdi's opera L'Orfeo, Handel's venerable Messiah, symphonies by Beethoven and Berlioz, and the Stravinsky ballet The Rite of Spring in the respective contexts of the cities, musical cultures, and performance venues in which they were first heard. Kelly builds his chapters through an accumulation of minute but not trivial detail. The first Euridice in L'Orfeo was a castrato priest; the oppression of Catholics in Handel's Dublin was shocking; the legendary catcalls at The Rite of Spring's premiere began before the curtain went up.

As Kelly gathers these pieces of the puzzle together, we become desperate to find out what will happen, completely forgetting that we already know how the music ultimately triumphed over time. Along the way, there is hilarious information about the audiences (Handel's would not have been out of place at a rodeo, though Monteverdi's was unusually well informed) and reactions from the performers (conductor Pierre Monteux apparently always hated the Rite). There are also many factoids about how the music must have sounded. (Did you know that the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth included a piano?)

Kelly has provocative ideas about performance practice, suggesting that it is really a matter of how adaptable musicians need to be; he feels that musical works themselves, not just our perceptions of them, change over time. A great deal of First Nights is devoted to documents about the works, and the discography is helpfully annotated by Jen-Yen Chen. A Harvard Course in a Nutshell.......2005-01-23

I took Professor Thomas Kelly's "First Nights: Five Performance Premieres" class at Harvard, and it was an amazing experience. His lectures were loosely based off of this book, and always garnered curious visitors in the lecture hall. While I didn't read the book during the course, because the material was repetitive with his lectures, I read all of it in anticipation for the final, and it was as if Professor Kelly was giving a personal lecture to me, all without leaving the comfort of my room. It is well written, well researched, anecdotal without being too convoluted, and entertaining, most importantly! I highly highly recommend this book! I am looking forward to reading his First Nights at the Opera book soon. If you ever have a chance to visit Harvard, do come by to listen to one of his lectures (Fall semester, Tu/Th at 10 AM in Sanders Theater)

A Coffee Table Book You Should Actually Read.......2000-07-23

It's easy as a listener to get caught up in the impact of great music on us today and to ignore the people who brought it about in the first place. Kelly has done a wonderful job of enlightening and enlivening my experience of these five works, four of which I've spent a lot of time with over the years. He brings together stories on the composition, the cultural setting, and the nuts and bolts of putting on the first performances in a way that both academics and popular readers will appreciate.

New Insights into Old Favorites.......2000-06-12

This book brings together an extraordinary amount of interesting information about 5 of the greatest works of Western music, in the context of trying to recreate their first performances. Kelly writes with the interest of an enthusiast, but the scholarly background is immense, as befits a university press book. Plenty of interesting illustrations and diagrams, and interesting pull-quotes in boxes, break up the text, enhancing readability. I had not previously been aware that the version heard at the first concert of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique was subjected to significant rewriting before being published in the form performed today -- this is typical of the interesting insights the book adds to common knowledge. Also, that Berlioz changed the selection of wind instruments, but that one can hear many of the originals on some recent recordings. My only disappointment was that Kelly stopped at 5 works - I would love a similar work-up of first performances of the Wagner Ring Cycle, Mozart's Figaro, and a major work of Mahler - perhaps the first performance of the 8th Symphony. I guess that just means that Kelly might profitably prepare a sequel!

All i can say is that this an incredible collection of Poetry. Other books to Explore are "Love, Death, & Exile" by Al-Bayati and also "Modern Arabic Poetry" translated by Salma Khaddra. I especially enjoyed the last poem.

Quite rightly,Israel has been called a melting pot for immigrants from many diverse countries. Having previously reviewed a couple of books for the Jerusalem Post about Yemenite Jews,I looked forward (and wasn't disappointed ) to learn about another ethnic group-the Ethiopians.

But this is a story with a difference. The author is an English lady,the daughter of Holocaust survivors,who fell in love with a young Ethiopian from Gondar,when she was working as a counsellor in an absorption centre.

The main thrust of the book is a graphic description of the living conditions of Ethiopian Jews in their villages,the dangerous journey through Sudan to the Promised Land (dressed as a Christian priest),and the fears and longings and Jewish pride of the new immigrants. Arriving in Israel,they had to worry about their families not yet arrived while trying to learn Hebrew and adjust to a new lifestyle.

This very readable account pulls no punches and doesn't flinch from discussing the occasional frictions between the young couple because of their different backgrounds,as well as the Ethiopians distrust of the Jewish Agency and the Rabbinate.

Zafan (Eddie Murphy to his colleagues) is now a policeman living in Maale Adumin not far from Jerusalem with his wife,Naomi and four children ,Daniel Achenef,Michael Fassil,Yigal Tadele,and Eyal Takele. His mother spent the last eight years of her life suirrounded by her fouty-five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. But Naomi's mother died in England far from her fourteen Israeli grandchildren.
