Product Description
For far too long, the huge contribution of African Americans to the social work profession has been relegated to little more than a footnote. The truth is, these forward-thinking individuals enhanced the quality of life within and outside their communities for generations. Their stories have never been told. Until now. Sixteen painstakingly researched chapters, written by social workers, highlight the distinct roles of African American social work pioneers from the 1890s through the 1940s. The book discusses the birth of social welfare activities, both informal and formal, and introduces founding members of organizations such as the National Urban League and the National Association of Colored Women. Written from a social work perspective and framed within a historical context, these profiles and their accompanying lessons help today's practitioner make the connection to current issues. Special Features * Accurate information about African American social work pioneers that fills a significant gap in social work literature * Elements of client and community empowerment techniques in each profile * Critical information about history of race, culture, and underserved communities * Examination of diversity and cultural sensitivity issues within today's social work profession

Customer Reviews:
good if you're absolutely clueless.......2007-07-17
because this book has pictures, you can see the "how-to"s of taking care of a baby, such as how to diaper, bathe, feed, nurse, change clothes, etc...
however, i was disappointed with the lack of updates. i got the book because i borrowed a friend who had an earlier addition, and you'd think that after 10+ years, the spelling mistakes would be corrected, and that makes me wonder how often the book is "updated."
Great book, a must have for any new parents........2007-06-16
We first checked this book out from our local library. We fell in love with it and just had to buy a copy for ourselves. It's a great book that contains a lot us useful real-life illustrations. We're first time parents and had so many questions about basic child-care. It helped answer some of the most simple questions to keep the baby clean, safe, and healthy. Now if only there was a manual on adulthood?!
Best Book for First Time Parents.......2007-04-26
This book is wonderful, the pictures are great and it covers so many differnt topics. From diaper changing, burping, colic, to first aid for your baby (both newborn and older).
I would recommend it to any first time parents.
Must have book for first-time parents.......2006-08-17
This is an indispensible book to me and my husband, giving guidance throughout pregnancy, to handling those first timid days at home, to caring for boo-boos of our energetic toddler. It covers a wide range of topics, with helpful pictures, and simple instructions. You MUST get your hands on this book if you are a first-time parent!
A Great Book for First-Time Parents.......2003-04-05
This is one of many pregnancy and baby books I have bought, and it's definitely one of my favorites. My husband and I are going to start trying to have a baby (our first) in about 5 months, so I'm reading all I possibly can right now. I've never been around infants, and I know absolutely nothing about how to take care of them. (I know- it's a scary thought me wanting to have one!!!) But this book has given me a lot of confidence, mainly because it's so detailed.
My favorite part of the book is the section on baby care- detailed steps of how to change a diaper, how to bathe the baby, how to dress the baby, etc. with very helpful (and beautiful) pictures. The section on pregnancy actually isn't very helpful- not very many details about the developing baby or changes in the mother; but it does give a basic overview and again, the pictures are beautiful. However, it does contain an excellent section on nutrition- spelling out (and showing) exactly what foods have what necessary nutrients for the pregnant woman, which I found very helpful. There's also a section on what to expect at each prenatal doctor's visit, which is very interesting.
All in all, this is a wonderful book with lots of good information and adorable pictures. If this isn't going to be your first baby, I don't think this book will be very helpful to you because you obviously know first-hand how to care for a baby already! However, it might be a good book for older siblings to look at (maybe age 10 and over)- so they can know what changes to expect and how they can help with the new baby. (There are pictures of the mother's naked body as it changes each month and of how to use a breast pump, so use discretion.) If you are expecting your first (or planning to be expecting soon, like me!!!) this book will be very helpful in teaching you the basics of caring for your baby.
P.S. My husband hasn't read any of my pregnancy/baby books, but he too liked the pictures in this one.

Customer Reviews:
Three great pregnancies and deliveries thanks to this book!.......2007-09-17
I found this book to be the most valuable of all the pregancy and childbirth books I read during my three pregancies. This was the book that empowered me to have a natural childbirth with my first child, without feeling like I would be total failure if I couldn't do it. I have had three natural childbirths and I owe it all to the advice, empowerment and information found in this book.
The book is written with respect for your intelligence and your ability to make your own decisions. It also leaves you feeling a sense of trust for your body's ability to make and produce a baby, instead of scared to death. A valuable reference.
Not worth it..........2007-08-14
I bought this book based on several good reviews, however, I was not impressed when I received the book. The book isn't really in any sort of format, so I had to do a lot of jumping around to find information. Once I found the information I was looking for, there would only be maybe a paragraph or two on the subject. I ended up going to the library and checking out "You & Your Baby Pregnancy" by Dr. Laura Riley. This book has been the best I've seen yet. If you are looking for a comprehensive, month by month or week by week book about your pregnancy, don't waste your money on The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth, you'll be disappointed.
Surprisingly traditional and inaccurate.......2007-06-24
While there seems to be great pictures and exercises for preparing for labor, and I appreciate the non-medicalized viewpoint, there are some real problems. First, there's almost nothing on the first couple months of pregnancy, which is when I'm most anxious and wanting to read soothing words about how the changes in my body are just fine. Second, there's some really inaccurate and thus scary information. For instance, she claims that cramping is unusual and possibly predictive of a miscarriage, while almost all other sources explain how totally normal it is to feel light cramping throughout as your uterus expands. Third, it's TOTALLY geared towards the partnered heterosexual pregnancy, with no acknowledgement at all of partnered lesbian parents or single mothers by choice (being single is briefly given a mournful "buck up" page for those mothers whose male partners have split).
I was really hoping for something a lot better. Maybe this would be useful later, but I'm so turned off that I'm going to return it.
Way better than what to expect series.......2007-06-13
I liked this books information and pictures. I found it to be the most helpful pregnancy book I owned, and I bought a lot!
Great information for natural birth.......2007-05-16
As a first time mom-to-be interested in birthing without drugs and as little intervention as possible, I found this book to be really helpful. There are lots of pictures of actual births, helpful diagrams, exercises to try, plus all kinds of other good information. She writes in a straight forward no nonesense kind of way which I really appreciate. There is information on current medical practices and a woman's options in and outside of a hospital setting. This book is a great addition to any woman's library who is learning what she can about the birth process. [...]

The backbone of my cookbook collection! .......2007-04-01
This is a cookbook that I have returned to time and time again. For a quick entrée, side dish or dessert I think it can not be beat. It is a great way to stretch a dollar, the dishes are delicious. And if you splurge on one dish and supplement your dinner with dishes from this book, no one is the wiser that you actually were cooking on a budget
Cooking with Three Ingredients.......2005-07-03
I purchased this book for my grandson who is going to college and is not a chef.ha I thought this would simplify things for him. I have reviewed it and it seems to have some he would eat.
A gem of a cookbook !!!.......2001-12-28
With probably 400 or so cookbooks in my collection, how could there be room or reason for another one? This is one of my all-time favorites! And one of the reasons has not been mentioned by any of the previous reviewers: Simple ways to use the contents of all of the jars and bottles on the refrigerator door!! The recipes are so simple and delicious. I have given it to friends and family members over and over. Thank you Andrew Schloss. Please reprint this book!!
No time to cook ? Bet you'll love this book!.......2000-02-07
I absolutely adore this book. I was cooking for my harassed little brother (single father of three) during a visit and he was exhausted all the time from work and kids. This book now makes his life so much easier and much more relaxed (at least every time he makes dinner)! Chef Schloss is the BEST!

Customer Reviews:
Alot copied from the Best of Time.......2007-10-02
Cant say alot about it, Its copied from the Best of Time.
OK if you dont have the best of Time by Hess and Dowling, then this is a good book. Black & White pictures let it down as well as errors on history
Shame about black & white pictures and copied material.......2007-09-23
I have the Rolex bible, The Best of Time by Hess, and this book seems to have alot copied from it. Even the forward is written by Hess. I was very disapointed. Some facts are wrong, some are good.
Overall a disapointment.
Well worth the investment!.......2007-09-11
This book is not for casual reading. It is a book for people that want to learn and invest or purchase Rolex watches. It is a reference and teaching guide. Very informative. Well worth the price.
Nice Rolex Book.......2007-08-18
A well written book with some very nice pictures. The history is not that informative, It seems to be a cross between The Rolex Bible by Dowling and Hess and The movement in Time with Breitling and Rolex by Cooper.
If you want all the facts and serial numbers get the Dowling /Hess book.
If you want all the History get the Cooper book. If you want a good mix, then get this book.
Color pictures would have been nice, but overall a great book to add to my collection.
Good book for Rolex collector........2007-08-12
Great book for Rolex collector. Slow on the shipping, but thats not the publishers fault.
Nice pictures, although all balck & white.

Disappointing.......2006-10-14
I was hoping to find some very unique ideas in this book but I was very disappointed. Most of the projects had the same look. It reminded me of 1970s patchwork. Not "crazy" as the title suggests, but probably can be accomplished in a weekend.

Book Description
Richard Rodgers was one of America's most prolific and best-loved composers. A world without "My Funny Valentine," "The Lady is a Tramp," "Blue Moon," and "Bewitched," to name just a few of the songs he wrote with Lorenz Hart, is scarcely imaginable, and the musicals he wrote with his second collaborator, Oscar Hammerstein--Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music--continue to enchant and entertain audiences. Arranged in four sections, Rodgers and Hart (1929-1943), Rodgers and Hammerstein (1943-1960), Rodgers After Hammerstein (1960-1979), and The Composer Speaks (1939-1971), The Richard Rodgers Reader offers a cornucopia of informative, perceptive, and stylish biographical and critical overviews. It also contains a selection of Rodgers's letters to his wife Dorothy in the 1920s, the 1938 Time magazine cover story and New Yorker profiles in 1938 and 1961, and essays and reviews by such noted critics as Brooks Atkinson, Eric Bentley, Leonard Bernstein, Lehman Engel, Walter Kerr, Ken Mandelbaum, Ethan Mordden, George Jean Nathan, and Alec Wilder. The volume features personal accounts by Richard Adler, Agnes de Mille, Joshua Logan, Mary Martin, and Diahann Carroll. The collection concludes with complete selections from more than thirty years of Rodgers's own writings on topics ranging from the creative process, the state of the Broadway theater, even Rodgers's bout with cancer, and a generous sample from the candid and previously unpublished Columbia University interviews. For anyone wishing to explore more fully the life and work of a composer whose songs and musicals have assumed a permanent--and prominent--place in American popular culture, The Richard Rodgers Reader will offer endless delights.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Collection of Articles and Essays.......2003-01-28
If any college plans to teach a course on Richard Rodgers, they need look no further than this book for the perfect text. Here is a collection of essays, book chapters, reviews, etc., dealing with Rodgers in each of his eras. They range from a Time magazine piece on Rodgers and Hart in the late 30s, to a Holiday magazine piece on Rodgers and Hammerstein in the late 50s. The collection helps give the reader an even better understanding of Richard Rodgers than he does in his own autobiography, because, as the editor notes, in the interviews that make up the final section, Rodgers is much more at ease and more glib.
Some of the articles are a little technical in nature, with their study of Rodgers' musical compositions, but anyone familiar with his writings should be able to understand what they're referring to, by simply running the tune through your head as you analyze what's being discussed.
The book is hardly a whitewash, and is amazingly fair in its presentation of articles both friendly and not so friendly. For example, there's a chapter from Diahann Carroll's autobiography that paints Rodgers in a very unflattering light.
The collection is not only informative, but it's very entertaining. While this book is good for people just getting familiar with Rodgers, it's probably best suited for the well-versed scholar, who will enjoy this research packed together in a handy volume, eliminating the need to head to the library's microfilm collection. Also, the editor does a very good job of pointing the reader to other articles that were not included (usually because of the cost, as he mentions in the foreword)
but present an opposing view or elaborate further on an idea.
Great job!
