Book Description
Americans vacationing or working in Europe just after World War II didn't appear to be trying to understand that the European civilian had been through a living Hell, but Lou Sisk had a more compassionate view. He has written a memoir of the peacetime military during the post-World War II period that reaches to the heart of both the native French that hosted his outpost and the American soldiers who lived there. Anecdotal and resonantly friendly, The Dark Is All Gone is about living in a post-war France riddled with antagonism toward the Ugly American. It explores a military base as American soldiers engaged the French civilians with restraint because there was no attempt to prepare these young men for the cultural difference that existed. It works compassionately to detail the cultural rupture of life after the war, its confusions and resolutions, its daily quirks, its ordinaryand extraordinaryaccomplishments.

Book Description
Abram crafts six true stores of men and women who withstood the dark years of Nazi barbarism, fighting back with vigor and creativity to preserve their lives and their Jewishness, and who then when on to build new lives.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it........1999-07-29
This book is solely from the heart. The author certainly took a lot of time and care to research this book and wrote it with a lot of feeling. I cannot wait until Alvin Abram writes another book even a sequel would be thrilling to read once again. I have recommended this book to all of my friends here in Toronto and abroad. I am sure they too will derive as much pleasure as I did in reading this book. Thank you for making the holocaust a more pleasurable reading experience. Jane Skinner
If there was one common thought, it was determination.......1999-07-21
Abram must have needed infinite patience to draw the details of each of these stories from their narrators. He certainly exerted all his talent in retelling them, using a flashback technique to set the scene for each one, but otherwise letting the stories of the individuals' Holocaust experiences and subsequent lives speak for themselves.
A glimpse into the lives of seven children.......1999-07-21
In each of the six stories, the subject took an active role to ensure his or her survival. During the Holocaust in which six million Jews perished, it is easy to lose sight of the individual and his or her actions. Jews weren't the sheep that history would like us to believe Abram states, there is no sense of pride in being portrayed as a victim. It is this statement that provides the running theme throughout the book that when read by a younger generation, would instil a sense of pride and lead them to the realization that a survivor in surviving was a hero.
This testimony is powerful and moving.......1999-07-21
While there is much to inspire in these accounts, my first reaction was of amazement at the behaviour of people on both sides of events. What a lesson in humanity. These stories make personal the atrocious events in history, the people who were the victims, and some other people who were just there, and by being there, played roles in what happened. Besides the history that can be learned through all the detail about places and events, the testimony of these people gives us much to think about. How would I have reacted? These stories enlarge our understanding of both history and humanity. A most worthwhile read.
This is a powerful, moving book........1999-07-20
Before hunger, deprivation, terror and torture, there was another part of life - life filled with meaning, spirituality, dignity, resistance and struggle, that even in the blackest moment in the history of the Jewish people, the enemy could neither vanquish nor destroy. That is the message of this powerful, moving book, a message we must never forget.

A Beam of Intense Darkness: Wilfred Bions Legacy to Psychoanalysis
ASIN: 1892746573 |
Book Description
Wilfred Bion was one of psychoanalysis most original and influential thinkers. His ideas, which can be traced in direct line in the development of psychoanalytic theory from Freud to Melanie Klein, are difficult to grasp because his writing style was often enigmatic and ambiguous. This is the first full biography and the first comprehensive explication of his significant contribution to psychoanalytic theory and practice.

Customer Reviews:
3.5 stars: A Challenge to Make Lasting Results on this Track.......2007-08-03
Author touts this book as a way to live to one's full potential. It'll get the reader closer to that, but there are a few problems in the philosophy behind the methods.
The PRACTICAL tips for simplifying are the best part of this book, as it outlines methods for dealing with mail and other important possessions, whether at home or while traveling.
I concur with the review before me, in which the reader says he uses the book as a reference. And that is because most of the book's practical tips and methods of dealing with emails, debt and savings, the garage, closets, and even friends, are certainly workable. And they do take WORK. You'll need to crack open the book often, just to get back on track. Nothing wrong with a user's manual, no sir.
But there is an underlying philosophy that I find objectionable and I'll get right to that. The author is suggesting ways of doing away with stress which are, frankly, disempowering. I can totally dig that an angry, stagnated, confused, and hopelessly disorganized person is in dire need of sweeping changes... but this book has more than one section in which "letting go" is promoted to the point where readers see a choice of either staying obsessively stressed on the little things or else going into a virtual / mental rabbit hole. Without tools for dealing with many things that can be confronted and easily resolved.
I was aghast to find in the book a kind of encouragement for giving up on the problems of the world. Yeah, you will experience less short term stress if you stop thinking about global warming and the children starving in Africa, but people who involve themselves in small ways in these kinds of global issues will tell you that it does wonders for stress about our puny concerns in the rat race. Talk about simplification! That wonderful expansive perspective of the giving soul, the humanist, the global citizen, is not part of Kustenmacher's method. His vision is limited to a small scope.
There are some lovely self-affirming nuggets in the book like thinking positively and ideas on how to express yourself in positive ways. Plus a great section on ending TV addiction. These are things that do give a person an enormous boost in self worth. But many of the how-to-make-a-decision tips are ridiculously poor, and some of the relationship tips would be very, very difficult for most marriages to apply without supervision. Scant true knowledge of the workings of relationships, false data in the book will lead some astray.
What is really great about this book is that it helps the reader paint for themselves some very real, very healthy goals. The book's little nudges toward a less wasteful life, a more healthy life, and a less messy life, are definitely nudges in the right direction. But this book is not the be-all and end-all to why the average person's surroundings are so complicated and yet meaningless.
Some good tips for your personal realm, but doesn't help anyone reach Nirvana.
An organizing reference manual.......2006-02-26
This is a very useful and practical approach to organization. Starting with your living arrangement, desk and closets, you progress upward in importance to organizing more important things like free time, work, relationships with others, and with yourself. I find myself carrying this book around and referencing it regularly. My wife and I reread certain chapters and we then tackle another organizing project. I highly recommend this book. There is even a web newsletter run by the author with new tips and suggestions.
A Simple Plan.......2005-01-11
People turn to books for advice on many issues, but the most successful books that fall into the self-help category deal more often with weight loss than self-actualization. That makes it all the more surprising that "How to Simplify Your Life," now in its 13th printing in Germany, has achieved a feat most German books, let alone those focused on self-help, so rarely accomplish: It has been published in English.
The German author duo comprised of Werner Tiki Kustenmacher and Lothar J. Seiwert is a formidable team of self help gurus, the former a trained Lutheran minister and free-lance cartoonist, the latter Germany's most sought-after professional coach. Since their book was first published, the "Simplify Your Life" brand has developed into a complex brand of lifestyle books and products - and a perennial bestseller at home and abroad.
Kustenmacher and Seiwert outline their vision for a simpler life in a seven-step life pyramid that starts with the charge to purge oneself of unnecessary objects and ends with the lofty goal of embracing one's life dream. The steps in between - and there are hundreds of them - stem from both men's private practices and from the over 600 American and German self-help books the authors analyzed while creating their own book.
Money isn't the object in their pursuit of happiness, but neither is an austere lifestyle. Readers are encouraged to weed out the clutter at office and home, which, the experts say, mentally blocks your personal development. If that doesn't scare the packrats to action, they offer ample evidence that having too much stuff in your life can actually make you obese.
Finance and time management form two further tiers of the pyramid, and here as well, the authors' advice is sound. Going far beyond their initial sections on how to unblock the flow of money and reduce debt, Kustenmacher and Seiwert have a collection of valuable tools for preventing interruptions at the office and at home, unlocking more free time. For the technically savvy but punctually bereft, they offer quite a few helpful hints for managing that ever-growing email deluge.
Its section on untangling family ties and building a good life partnership could be a book in itself. Here, the authors' advice ranges from using networking to end isolation and how to be a good guest and hostess to dealing with envy and learning to accept your partner's differentness.
The "Last Steps" section is perhaps the most nebulous section of the book - and also the most uninspired. Few will be reassured by short paragraphs on how to develop one's life dream, and the fill-in-the blank greatest strengths test only detracts from the other practical information in the book.
As for the success of its translation, "How to Simplify Your Life" is laced with fun facts about modern German life, but seems an appropriate tool for Americans as well. It has earned its place alongside that other great self-help book for our times, "Who Moved My Cheese?"
Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-09-17
Do you ever wish that you were born with an owner's manual? Well, Tiki Kustenmacher, simplicity expert, and Dr. Lothar J. Seiwert, professional coach, offer a digestible life guide that reads like an operating primer for the human spirit. Livened up with Kustenmacher's cute illustrations, each chapter tackles a different facet of life, such as managing clutter, taming finances and establishing goals. The practical tips from these bite-size chapters are easy to digest and implement. Their recipe for a simplified life includes valuable suggestions for handling difficult emotions (jealousy) and life events (marriage, death). Although the text is fun to read, the authors skip around and circle back to different subjects in each chapter. Tighter organization would have made the book's counsel easier to track. And, each chapter begins with an unnecessary, somewhat annoying "dream of simplicity" visualization. Just skip those little appetizers and dive right into the main course. Also check out the excellent reading list at the back of the book. We recommend this manual to pack rats, workaholics and all those who would welcome simplicity as a relief from life's chaos.
Simply great!.......2004-06-01
Modern life is stressful and complicated, we are torn between working life and private life, we are pressed for time constantly, we are swamped with outstanding tasks - sometimes our everyday life is nothing but chaos. Fortunately, a friend of mine gave me this brilliant book. It shows, how to clean up your life and throw off unnecessary ballast. The practical advices are very easy to implement: after reading the book, I started immediately to clear up my room, and, believe it or not, it was fun and gave me a feeling of rearranging and organizing my life. Of course the book deals not just with tidy rooms. You'll find out what really matters, in your job, your relationship, in your life. Recommended! It works!

I love this book.......2007-01-28
This book has become my favorite cookbook over the years. Everything I have made from this book has been delicious and there are staple recipes from here that I make every week. Most impressive to me is the fact that the recipes are ultra healthy in addition to being delicious. There are many raw salad and cole slaw recipes that have no added oil. By far, the best vegetarian cookbook I've ever used.
An outstanding book with a flair for flavor!.......1998-07-10
I have over fifty cookbooks and yet this is one I turn to most consistently. This cookbook is for everyone who believes that vegetarian cooking lacks flavor. The recipes all rely on whole, natural foods instead of canned or processed foods. The variety is outstanding and I have yet to make a dish that disappoints. The authors tend to build on a repertoire of sauces, fillings etc., so the ingredients you made for Sun. night dinner can also lend themselves to Wed. night dinner. The meals are easy, and most can be assembled quickly. Most importantly, the recipes allow your tastebuds to truly discern each ingredient and enjoy it for its contribution. Take a look at the authors' pictures on the back - these folks are very much senior citizens, yet, they are the epitome of health. Buy this cookbook, enjoy flavorful vegetarian food that will also contribute to your well-being.

I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE BOOK I PURCHASED FROM AMAZON.COM THIS BOOK DID GIVE ME ALL THE INFORMATION I WAS LOOKING FOR. AND DOING BUSINESS WITH AMAZON.COM WAS VERY GOOD, AND THE PRICES AND SHIPPING WERE VERY SATISFACTORY.
The Seventeenth Edition.......2004-01-06
As a whole it is fantastic. But, by not listing the men's by name, such as "Leather"; it caused me a lot of time and trouble trying to find it.

Very Disappointed!!.......2003-03-01
I bought this book for several different reasons but mainly for Avon beer steins...most of which my husband has...and didn't get enough information from this book to really be able to price even one out of all that he has...My husband and I both agree that this book is short on information, details, and inventory. Really wish that I had not bought the book.
very disappointing.......2002-04-10
I just received this book and was very disappointed.I have an older avon book with color pages and handy guide. This book had unclear, black and white pictures.Hard to use.I definately would not recommend this book for a collector.
Bid Hastin Avon Collectors Encyclopedia.......2001-09-09
I was under the impression that the book had more of a variety of "collectibles" than shown. I have several items from the 60's to the late 80's that I could not find. The collectible I was most interested in finding was a set of 4 Birds from 1986. All 4 are stamped except one--the owl--does not have the year on the base.
Bud Hastin's 16th Ed Avon Collector's Encyclopedia.......2001-07-12
This book proved very helpful to me, but, there were some Avon items I have that I believe should have been in the book (alongside similar items), but, were not. I would suggest people buy this book if they have Avon items, but, remember that the book is not inclusive.
Good Book, But Where's The Color?.......2001-04-12
This is a great book for collectors of AVON and Cape Cod Products. Recently used it to price a few items for sell on eBay.com. Only thing that would make the book better is if it where to contain color photos, rther than the black and white ones.

This is the only good Paper Airplane Book I have come across.......2000-03-04
Great Paper Jets was an odd extra book from the library. As we checked it out, I was thinking - another dumb book eh; they all are. But
I went through the motions because everone in my family was excited. I copied the pages onto heavy stock and we went for it.
The Basics: The Planes look great.
The planes fly well.
The planes are fun to make.
This is the only book on paper planes which of all the ones I have encountered, which is many - actually delivers.
So why buy it rather than just get it from your library and copy it.
Well try it from your library like we did. I guarantee you will want to buy it. Should this plane book go out of print. It will be gone and the trash out there with the glitz but zero content will be all that's left.
We rate it the highest since it is the only paper airplane book that meets or exceeds our expectations.

Great Fun.......2006-05-19
"Planes, Jets & Helicopters" is lots of fun and doesn't require anything more than the typical 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. Gives good instructions on how to build AND how to throw the planes.
This book makes a great way to have fun with the kids. Our [...] sons love this book. The planes vary from the simple spinning dart to a few slick jets. We first discovered this book at the library. With all the kid abuse toward the book we finally had to buy our own copy.
I was also surprised at how much fun my inner engineer/crafty-person was having.
My only complaint would be that we found a couple of instances in the book where the instructions referred to "point A" and there was no "point A" to be found. But with the figures/pictures it was easy enough to figure out.
Overall... a lot of fun for the family and the engineer/child/crafty-person in you.

Book Description
New Cancer Therapies is a passionately argued yet clear-eyed look at the world of alternate cancer therapy and its ostracism by the conventional medical establishment.
Focussing on treatments that have had their basis in conventional medical research, such as IAT (imuno-augmentative therapy) and F-149, author and cancer survivor Penny Williams paints a compelling and chilling portrait of a North American medical establishment unwilling to look at new ways of treating cancer outside the traditional trio of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
Through extensive patient interviews and opened clinical files, Williams builds an argument that some of these other treatments, particularly IAT, have an impressive empirical success rate and that they have been closed out of the North American clinical trial circuit because their discoverers butted heads with the establishment and lost.
Never losing sight of the human cost, Williams shares the stories of cancer sufferers having to hide their alternate treatments from their closed-minded conventional doctors. She tells stories, too, of patients lucky enough to have doctors who could see that the alternate treatments seemed to be having an effect. She tells of patients who survived 17 years beyond their prognosis and of those who did not. She tells stories of hope and laughter and the unbeatable human spirit.
Gracefully written,
New Cancer Therapies is compelling and important. It dares the North American medical establishment to set aside its blinkers and allow conventional treatments and alternate therapies to work hand in hand. Anyone who reads this book will not look at news reports of cancer treatments the same way again.
Customer Reviews:
Your doctors don't know everything!.......2000-09-26
Even with the best intentions, doctors and organizations like the American Cancer Society cannot evaluate new therapies for cancer objectively or thoroughly. Every branch of my family has gotten some form of swiftly killing cancer. The half that took the "traditional" forms with chemo and radiation all died within a few years, at max. The other half has lived and still live, in some cases 20+ years later! Their cancer therapy is listed as a "quackery" on ACS's site and no doctor supported them in their choice! Mainstream medicine doesn't have the wherewithall to correct its own misjudgements. So, don't take anyone's work for granted and explore the possibilities thoroughly before choosing.
This book outlines a number of choices in a fashion that allows you, who know your body the best of *anybody*, to choose what's right for you!
You have got to understand that doctors are under the penalty of loosing their livelihood if they fall out of the norm. Patients can die right and left, if the therapy is traditional, normal, and expected. Not a single patient can die if the therapy is different. No, it's not fair, but it's the direct result of our litigious society. It's no one's fault, but it's your life, so don't give it up to cancer or chemo!

A review of Fiddling With Life.......2001-01-29
What a story! What a life. Why? Because for this reader, the excitement of discovering a musical genius of our time is a peak experience. This is a world class violinist who somehow managed to escape the public eye, yet he was concertmaster of not one, but four world class orchestras: the Royal Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw, the Chicago Symphony, and the Toronto Symphony. His discography reads like a summary of the violin literature. His students are in professional orchestras throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. And, unlike most violin virtuosi who find one great instrument, he has owned many in his 50 year career. Documenting them in detail in this book! Although tarred by McCarthy politics in the 1950's he went on to become the concertmaster of the Royal Philharmonic by the age of 24, earning the title"king of concertmasters" from the Strad. magazine. The book documents in realistic detail the real world of a professional violinist. If you are even remotely interested in the shadowy side of the classical music business, the roiling dynamics of a professional orchestra, unrealistic academe, great violins, and the vagaries of a professional career, you'll want Fiddling With Life. What a story!

Witness.......2003-01-27
The fear and terror that Elie Wiesel endured during his teenage years can not be rationally explained. The novel Witness for Life by Ellen Norman Stern portrays the dramatic and emotional impact that the Holocaust had on Elie Wiesel's life.
The systematic extermination of Elie's family became a ghastly memory and a critical part of shaping his future identity. Elie's comfortable home life in his early years deeply influenced his life. Eliezer Wiesel was born in Sighet, Transylvania to Shlomo and Sarah Wiesel on September 30, 1928. Elie, from a very young age, wanted to learn the intricacies of the Jewish religion. He would study Judaism eleven months each year. He would do his secular studies in an intensive one-month program. His love of learning would come back to him later in his life.
When Elie was fifteen, all the Jews of Sighet were gathered up and put on a train to Auschwitz. The last sight that Elie had of the town that he had loved so much during his childhood was Adolf Eichmann striding up and down the platform laughing. The horrible stench of burning human flesh surrounded the camp. He witnessed human bodies being tossed into giant ditches with fire burning at the bottom. Hoping that this was all a dream, Elie went to bed that night to the sounds of the Mourners Kaddish, a prayer for the dead. Although he still believed in a god, he could no longer praise him. Elie's father died during the time that he was in Auschwitz.
Elie soon met the Nobel laureate Francois Mauriac. Francois was also a member of the French Resistance. He urged Elie to write about what he had witnessed. Elie emerged with an eight hundred page manuscript that no one would publish. The manuscript was entitled Night. Mauriac used his influence to have Night published after Eli condensed the book.
By reading this novel before reading a novel like Night I was able to better understand the life of Elie Wiesel. The author made it apparent that she interviewed Elie for this biography. She also used excepts from many of Elie's books. Although this is a well-written book, it was published in 1982. Elie has done many things since then, including the pinnacle of his career, winning the Nobel Peace Prize. I would suggest reading a more current biography.
