Book Description
From altar boy to prostitute, from hormone and silicon injections to drastic sex-change surgery, all part of a quest for meaning and self-identity. And then, the greatest change of all...a new person. Through a life-long struggle with transsexuality, Perry finally comes to understand the source of true love. "I thought God had made a mistake. He must have been playing tiddly winks or something when I was born. He should have pressed the `girl' button, but he pressed the one for boys instead. I wanted desperately to be a woman, and to have money, fame and pleasure. On February 9, 1974, I found what I'd been looking for all my life ... Dresses only covered my masculinity. Makeup only masked it. Silicone only reshaped it. Surgery only mutilated it. Underneath, in every cell of my body, the truth was recorded ten million times, in every gene. I was a man!"

Book Description
Why do markets so often seem to defy logic?
Why do people hold on to their losers and dump winners?
How does your risk tolerance affect investment success?
Answers to these and other perplexing questions are found in Getting Psyched for Wall Street. This ground-breaking book explains how investors' actions and emotions affect the market. It usses the principles of psychology and the power of behavioral finance to explain the seeming contradictions of Wall Street. Now it's possible to really understand what's going on -- and profit from it. Dr. Murstein cuts through the fog that obscures the workings of the stock market. He explains why and how the market functions, in terms that can be easily understood. The book includes numerous examples and illustrations to help readers see how the concepts can be used to profit consistently. This isn't just theory: Dr. Murstein is living proof that his concepts work.
Customer Reviews:
Investment book "sleeper".......2002-08-21
I was curious about the nearly unanimous 5-star rating given this book by other reviewers. After picking up a copy from Amazon and reading it, let me join the chorus with my own 5-star rating! What a find! Murstein seems to cover nearly everything you would want to know about the market in a succinct and humorous manner, remarkable for a volume of only 350 pages. Of particular and topical interest: it has been published recently enough to discuss the impact of the Enron scandal and how investors should approach the market in these times. It is scholarly without being stodgy. Murstein evaluates the great variety of strategies, schemes, systems and newsletters out there with a very critical eye. He names names and doesn't pull any punches. While the book is oriented mainly toward the individual securities investor, he does have a useful section on mutual funds (my special interest). There's one outstanding chapter near the end (alone worth the price of the book) called "Maxims, Adages and Suggestions" - over 70 of these, many of which are very useful. One last word: I'm familiar with and rely on the Lynch and Zweig investment books; the Murstein volume beats them both hands down!
An economist's opinion.......2002-07-17
This book is a must for every serious investor. It is informative and based on research findings, but humorous and easy to read. I especially liked the chapters showing that serious individual investors can outperform professional money managers, and how to do it.
The ultimate key to working the market.......2002-06-14
Finally! A book every individual investor can understand and use immediately. Murstein is both lucid and witty. His analyses are scholarly but clearly presented. Practical? Check his chapter on a rational approach to selecting stocks. My own investment strategies will never be the same. Professor Murstein, where were you when we needed you at the beginning of our investment rollercoaster?
Give This Book to YOUR Broker [if you have one].......2002-06-10
I REALLY enjoyed the history of investing in the introduction.
Afterward, I found certain sections to be particularly illuminating with regard to my personal efforts to increase my assets via the markets, but the numerous graphs often left me, neither a psychologist nor a financial professional, wondering.
SO, I've given a copy of this book to my broker, and I hope that SHE will use it to enrich us both.
A superb blend of psychology and finance.......2002-06-05
Getting Psyched For Wall Street: A Rational Approach To An Irrational Market by psychology and behavioral finance expert Bernard Murstein is a superb blend of psychology and finance. Specifically written to help ordinary investors of all background better understand the interaction between human psychology and the ups and downs of Wall Street, Getting Psyched For Wall Street covers everything from why so many people were blind to Enron's problems to why stocks sometimes go up on bad news and down on good news. Getting Psyched For Wall Street is a unique, inherently fascinating, "reader friendly", practical work that should be read by any investor seeking to understand how market forces function and are influenced.

I am very happy with this book and another companion book by the same author. This book is a very useful reference to the range of lures manufactured through recent times. I refer to it all the time when I am buying fishing lures on ebay etc. I can't compare it to other books as these are the only lure collecting books that I own. Great photos too.

sewing freak.......2007-05-08
We have a group of ladies who get together to sew each month. One friend got this book at our local quilting store. We loved so many of the patterns that 4 of us decided to go ahead and get it also. The price was better online. So now we are off and ready to make one of the runners in the book. This was a book that all of us loved most of all the patterns. There are clear and easy instructions, and a great selection.

Customer Reviews:
Spectacular Designs and Colors!.......2004-03-24
I borrowed this book from a friend and was amazed by the wonderful designs and use of color. The authors used a very unique and original method of arranging the appliqued designs. The designs in this book are interesting new twists on traditional designs like the pomegranate and other floral designs. One of the things that I found most interesting was that the backgrounds of the designs are pieced with fabrics of similar hues, tones, and colors which helped to enrich the design and add interest. All of the designs are applique.
If you're looking for a book on applique that is different then a lot of other books out there then this is the one! This book has imagination, spunk, color, and originality. I cannot wait to buy my own copy!
Book Description
The beautiful floral appliqué quilts of the nineteenth century have long been admired and appreciated. This book showcases fifty-three striking examples of these quilts, taken from the Ardis and Robert James Collection of the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska. The quilts comprise a range of styles, including cut-out chintz appliqué quilts, album-style quilts, a number of red-and-green floral appliqué quilts, as well as a limited number of pieced quilts and crazy quilts. Included with each botanically inspired quilt is a detailed, informative description of its appliqué, piecing, and quilting techniques as well as enlightening background information concerning the historical, horticultural, and botanical influences on the quilt's design and execution. Helpful essays at the beginning of the book explore nineteenth-century women's sustained interest in botany and examine the fascinating parallels between the designs of flower gardens and those of quilts during that era.
Customer Reviews:
amazing quilts.......2006-04-18
this is a magnificent collection of quilts. like many other quilters, i have quite a few books devoted to antique quilts--whether museum or state project collections or the quilts of other countries. this is one of the best.
many of the quilts shown are unlke any others i've seen in any source. the range and wealth of design and originality are breathtaking and inspirational.
the sections dealing with women's roles in 19th century america and their relation to botany is well written and very interesting.
the photos and written descriptions of the quilts are very good. it would, of course, have been lovely to have had detailed shots of the quilting, but that is possibly the only criticism i have about this book.
definitely a book for any quilter's library, and also valuable to anyone interested in the lives of 19th century women.
A wonderful book of botanical quilts.......2001-10-17
This book presents 53 full color quilts from the Ardis and Robert James collection at the Nebraska State Museum. The quilts are all superb examples of cut-out chintz applique, album style, applique, pieced and some crazy quilts. It examines the influence of gardening and botanizing on 19th century quilt designs. I highly recommend this book to the quilter, or quilt lover. It gives a detailed description of each quilt, and brings out design elements that might otherwise be overlooked. I own many quilt documentation books and have not seen most of the quilts in this book before. Many have never been publicly displayed before. It is absolutly gorgeous. Buy it!!! You will not be disappointed.
Detailed descriptions of appliques, piecing, & techniques.......2001-08-09
Enhanced with 53 color plates, 11 b/w illustrations, five charts and an index, A Flowering Of Quilts is a superbly presented compendium of the quilter's art with selections drawn from the Ardis and Robert James Collection of the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska. A spectrum of quilting styles is presented including cut-out chintz applique quilts, album-style quilts, red-and-green floral applique quilts, pieced quilts, crazy quilts, and more. Each botanically inspired quilt is supported with a detailed description of its applique, piecing, and quilting techniques, as well as historical, horticultural, and botanical background information on the quilt's design and execution. Informative essays explore the nineteenth century women's sustained interest in botany and examine the parallels between their flower garden designs of the era. ItÂ's a way to bridge the gap between the gurgling stage and the time when babies are actually able to talk. Everything you need to know!.......2007-07-16
My best friend was signing with her son when my daughter was born, so I had already done some research and decided to sign with my daughter, but I just couldn't seem to find the time to read Joseph Garcia's Sign with Your Baby, which from what I can tell is the original & best book about the subject.
So I bought this book when my daughter was about 5 months old. It's wonderful. Short, a quick and easy read, but with all the basic information need about why you want to sign with your baby, how baby signing originated, and how to get started. My husband even read it -- and really, he never manages to read anything.
We started signing with our daughter at about 6 months. The only thing we didn't really do like the book instructed was that we started with 3 signs (more, all done, nurse).
Our daughter was an early talker, and she said her first word at about 8.5 months. She had 5 words before she signed "all done" at 10 months. From there she learned spoken words and signs simultaneously, one after the other.
She became sign a good talker so early we almost gave up on signing, but in hindsight, I'm so glad we didn't. Signing has been a wonderful way for her to express words that were too long or complicated for her to say, and a great to supplement her spoken language. She really got into signing around 13 months. Now, at 18 months, she speaks more than 100 words and still regularly uses about 15 signs. I know she really, really wants something if she's speaking the word and signing it, too. And she loves to sit and look at her signing board books and signing flash cards!
All in all, a big thumbs up for this book. It was the only reference we used to get started. You can always read the Garcia book later (I did).
such great info. .......2007-06-28
This book is great! the info is thourough but not boring to read. it explains what you need to do to help teach your little one to sighn. plus the sighns are ASL. I definantly recommend this book.
Great eye opener.......2007-04-01
I have found out how to make a child smarter using sign language. When you sign for the baby, you need to pronounce the word also, which stumulates left and right part of the brain, which makes baby smarter. I will definately use it when my baby is 6-7 month old to help the development of its brain faster.
From a Grandma.......2007-03-10
I bought this book from Amazon along with a few others and had it shipped to my daughter who is pregnant with her first child. She seems to really be enjoying reading it and says she is learning a lot from it.
If you want a smart, happy, non frustrated baby....teach your baby sign lanugage!!.......2006-11-29
I cannot stress enough how important it is to learn sign language with your child. I have been teaching sign language to my son since he was 10 months. I recieved this book as a gift and it has helped take our sign language even further. My son is a happy little boy, who is not frustrated, and is really smart. I have sign language to help with that!! Don't be worried that if you teach your child sign language that they will never talk. My son is 16 months, he can sign and say partial words to at least 10 different things, not to mention he is starting to combine words. At 15 months he was able to tell me that he needed to go potty, so potty training has begun. I find it all so amazing, and all I can rave about is how sign language has made it all possible!!

'Nice Work' is a Great Read!.......2006-03-09
The perfect book for anyone interested in wordsmiths. Ira Gershwin was the master lyricist of popular music. By becoming his archivist, Michael Feinstein began a friendship that lasted until the end of Ira's life. Fiensteins musical knowlegde, and his own highly successful career as a performer of the American song book, makes him the ideal auther of book based on the Gershwins as well as other songwriters of the Golden Era of American music.
Outstanding but you must hear Feinstein in concert.......2005-08-07
This autobiography is outstanding and entertaining but you must hear Feinstein in concert. We saw him with Rosemary Clooney in the declining years of her career and the concert was "amazing". Clooney clearly had only a few years to live ( she lived another 2 years) but Feinstein treated her with the respect she deserved and offered insight into the evolution of the lyrics she was singing. Clooney was the talent, Feinstein was talent plus insight.
Feinstein offers us an insiders look at the great lyricists and writers of the first half of the twentieth century. Fantastic!
a very well written, and informative book.......2003-01-28
Michael Feinstein writes a very informative as well as entertaining book, tha gives an insiht to famous composers and lyricist of the golden age, like George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern. It's a lot about his life experiences mmeeting and befriending Ira Gershwin. It's well worth reaing, and there's many interesting stories he has to tell, at times happy, sometimes sad, as well as humerous.
Wonderful...Fantastic...I Loved it!.......2000-04-13
This is my favorite auto-biography in the whole world bar none. I savored every delightful page. I would make this required reading at every music school in the country if I had my way. It is as honest and no-holds-barred as any book I have ever read. He tells all about himself and about George and Ira Gershwin, Harrey Warren, etc. etc. I live for the day Feinstein releases his *next* book. (He says in this book that another book will be forthcoming). I should mention that I sing and play piano myself (just for fun, not profit) and this probably made this book much more meaningful to me than it might to a normal lay reader. Having said that, I consider this book a classic that will be savored and enjoyed for many centuries to come. I bought every CD Michael ever made after reading this book.
One of the most enjoyable books I've ever read, a must read.......1998-07-10
If you are a lover of good music and equally good writing, then "Nice Work If You Can Get It" is a must. The light and breezy style of Mr. Feinstein makes this one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I literaly couldn't put it down and once I finished reading it, I started reading it again. Each reading provides me with new insite into this most talented of performers. His stories are fresh and informative. It's hard to believe that Michael didn't personally know the great songwriters and composers of the golden age. His writes about George and Ira Gershwin as if they were beloved members of his family, particularly his love for Ira who became almost a second father to him. If you are a lover of good music and good writing then "Nice Work If You Can Get It" is a must. Sit back, open the book and prepare yourself for a wonderful time, again and again.

A shell of a book.......2004-05-14
Because of the horrific subject matter, and the heroic role of the main author in the saving of countless lives, and the everpressing need for all survivors of all holocausts to have their voices heard, I am initially hesitant to say something bad about this book, but the truth is, this is not a very good book.
The book is comprised of two sections, Jagendorf's memoirs, and background information by Aron Hirt-Manheimer. The book states at the beginning that Jagendorf's first attempt to publish his memoirs ended in failure. Not a wonder. His material was divided into seven sections, consisting of between 4 to 7 chapters, with the average chapter length being 2-3 pages. Jagendorf's writing style is more of a listing of his activities, with very little emotion, background or insight. It might even be suggested that despite the hardships and horror that was the Romanian Holocaust, that Jagendorf was basically full of himself. The notion was politely repeated several times by Hirt-Manheimer and several of the sources he interviewed.
Hirt-Manheimer's role was to flush out the book, which he attempted to do with commentary after each section featuring interviews with survivors, a time-line, introduction of historical documents, and a re-interpreting of Jagondorf's claims. It was a noble attempt, but one that could not overcome the disappointment of the source manuscript.
If you want a book to learn of the pain and trauma of Transnistria, this isn't it. If you are looking for source material for Transnitria, this book may have some merit, as it cannot be disputed that Jagendorf was a major figure during those years, and his contribution did save tens of thousands of jews. And on that note, that is perhaps the most thought provoking part of this book, analysising exactly the type of role Jagendorf played, was he a saviour, a power broker, or a little of both.
