The story of Floyd Olson's career is fascianting, but I think he could have had a better researcher and biographer than this book evidences.

In the old days, Patagonia was a mining and ranching town. The hills were dotted with minesÂ¡Âªthe Trench, Flux, World's Fair, and many, many more. Copper and silver and gold ore came downÂ¡Âªin trucks and on burrosÂ¡Âªfrom mining towns such as Harshaw to the railroad in downtown Patagonia. In those days also, cowboys drove their herds into town to the pens along the railroad to wait for the cattle cars. And at night, in the local bars, miners swapped stories about ore cars that left the tracks, veins of gold ore that had not been mined yet, and miners who were maimed or who died in accidents.

Joker Mendoza was there. He walked from his home across from the cattle pens eight miles uphill to the Flux, and he walked home at night with his miner's lamp lighting up the path. Today, Joker still sits in the Wagon Wheel bar from time to time, and, if you ask, will retell the stories of those days, now long gone. Pull up a stool and listen. Let Joker take you back to the mi. See if you can smell the gas and taste the dust!

A good read that tells you what to do........2006-08-29

I enjoyed reading this book; it is broken down into several chapters that address the various needs older cars have when they need to be restored. The restoration advice was quite complete, whether you intend to restore your car to concours standards or just create a drivable, presentable car, and I especially liked the timetables. For example, the suggestions about chrome restoration were quite helpful, and I think that following the author's advice about sending the chrome out to be done first thing since it takes so long to get done would make the process of reassembling the completed car a lot more fun.

There are lots of color pictures covering all phases of restoration, and they are helpful. My one minor gripe about them is that they are getting a bit old; this book has been updated and reprinted a few times, and it might be time to update some of the pictures as well.

Several brand-name products are mentioned that can help with the restoration process, and the addresses for these companies are given. I especially liked the fact that environmentally-friendly options were listed as well. Too often, toxic solvents are used when safer products will do the same job.

Overall, this is a fine book with lots of information. Is it the only book you will need? No. You will need a parts manual for your particular car (at the very least) and perhaps abother book on painting, but this is a very good starting point. Plus, it is quite affordable to boot.

How to Restore Your Collector Car CHECK EDITION.......2004-11-10

This is a very good informative book. However check which edition you are buying. This book was published in 1984 with the newer edition in 1999. A lot has changed particularly as to suppliers, paint technical information and welding information. I would highly recommend you skip this edition and go buy the newer edition.

Best Car Restoration Book I've Seen.......2004-09-29

Tom covers all of the details you need to know to help you restore your car. Yes, he mentions some products by name or manufacturer but only because he thinks they are the best for the purpose being discussed. He has restorered many cars and it is helpful to get his opinion of certain products. Much better than some books that tell you to do your research or, worse even, that all products are about the same so it doesn't matter which you buy.

If you are restoring a car or even paying someone else to do it for you then get this book. You'll learn how to do it or the right questions to ask the person you hire.

An informative commercial.......2001-06-18

This book is very educational about the topic, but it mentions the same supplier of materials an average of twice per page. I learned quite a bit from it and will continue to use it as a valuable reference, but expect to read about aerosol products and specialty tools from the same company throughout the book. The author doesn't stick with the most authentic of repairs and restorations, but he does do a good job of showing the authentic level of repairs as well as the not so authentic. Overall, worth the money but a tad annoying.

Finally a helpful book.......2000-12-14

After being frustrated with countless titles on auto restoration, this book is a God send. It covers everything in concise detail and includes large Color photographs. No other books Ive seen comes anywhere close to the quality of this one. The information in here is priceless. The author has obviously restored many cars and researched many techniques.

Not quite a directory and far from complete, The Complete Surfaces and Finishes Directory might still be useful as an idea book for readers who are just beginning to think about tackling a home-redecorating project.

Finger-tabbed sections on paints, paint finishes, plaster and concrete, wall coverings, tile, wood, and glass and metal, each about 20 pages long, provide the basic information you need to start planning: Will you have to use an undercoat with satinwood paint? What's involved in polishing or waxing a plaster wall? What are the advantages and disadvantages of laminated wood flooring? Can you effectively integrate a trendy rubber or industrial-metal floor into your kitchen design? As a general reference, the book answers these questions adequately; if you're looking for more detailed advice on how to use, say, glass blocks or antique tiles, check out one of the many books dealing with the specific project you have in mind.

At the end of each section are two sample projects. Some are simple, like painting vertical stripes on the wall (using a plumb line); some are more complicated, like laying a patterned border in a tile floor, but the directions for all of them are straightforward, and the final results are tasteful and attractive. --Liana Fredley

More like 'Surfaces and Finishes 101'..........2007-05-03

When you picture a "directory", what comes to mind? Perhaps a huge, bulking monstrosity, with the weight of a phone book and the sort of exhaustive info you'd expect from Encyclopedia Britannica. At least that's the type of visualization I have; and, that said, a massive volume is what I expected to pick up from my local library when I put THE COMPLETE SURAFCES AND FINISHES DIRECTORY on hold.

Alas, SURFACES AND FINISHES is more like a "home décor 101" guide than a directory. In seven chapters, author Emma Scattergood introduces newbies to simple paint techniques, paint finishes (faux finishes), plaster and concrete, wall coverings, tiles, wood, and glass and metal, in that order. The final chapter offers some suggestions for tying the materials together. While marginally useful for the beginner, SURFACES AND FINISHES doesn't offer any advice that can't easily be found online (for free, to boot!) using The Google (as GW would say). Any one of dozens of home improvement websites are just as informative, if not more so. If you're a first-time homeowner who needs some inspiration to get your creative juices flowing, SURFACES AND FINISHES might be worth a look (it does have some pretty pictures, I'll give it that). However, it's hardly the be-all, end-all directory it claims to be. Rather, it's a decent starting point; nothing more, nothing less. Save your dinero, unless you can browse SURFACES AND FINISHES via your biblioteca.

Great idea book for home decorating, nice projects.......2002-04-29

This is a wonderful idea book for home decorating. It is a guide to a variety of surfaces and finishes including paint, plaster, concrete, wallpaper, tile, wood, glass and metal.

The book is divided into sections on various materials and finish types such as types of wood, paint types, paint effects, and glass styles. Each section includes background information and sample pictures. I have lots of interior design reference books and I found more examples I liked in here than in many of the larger books. A chart listing all the finishes in the chapter and their applications concludes each section.

Each section includes one or two full projects as well as many other ideas. The projects are rated by difficulty, but they are very brief and do not include step-by-step demonstrations. Some projects include colorwashing a wall, tinting and polishing plaster, using fabric as a wall cover, making a tile border, creating tongue and groove paneling and building a copper paneled cupboard.

In the back there is a nice section on putting it all together. Here you find advice on everything from using texture to choosing upholstery. It also helps you choose your own style and decorate every room in your house. There is also a good list of suppliers. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys creatively decorating their home.

Francine Christophe’s account begins in 1939, when her father was called up to fight with the French army. A year later he was taken prisoner by the Germans. Hearing of the Jewish arrests in France from his prison camp, he begged his wife and daughter to flee Paris for the unoccupied southern zone. They were arrested during the attempted escape and subsequently interned in the French camps of Poitiers, Drancy, and Beaune-la-Rolande. In 1944 they were deported to Bergen-Belsen in Germany.

In short, seemingly neutral paragraphs, Christophe relates the trials that she and her mother underwent. Writing in the present tense, she tells her story without passion, without judgment, without complaint. Yet from these unpretentious, staccato sentences surges a well of tenderness and human warmth. We live through the child’s experiences, as if we had gone hand-in-hand with her through the death camps.

A Young Girl's Past.......2001-04-12

Francine Christophe's account of her experiences at the French Concentration Camps at Poitiers, Drancy and Beaune-La-Rolande, it is a very interesting book. She tells the story in a very personal way. She leaves nothing out and tells an honest story about her experience in the camps. Her honest writing helped me understand the hardship that a whole group of children survived during War World 2. I would want people to read the book and see what those people went through at those camps.
