Book Description
The author began his service career at the age of sixteen in early 1938 as a boy entrant in the RAF at Cranwell, Lincolnshire, where he was trained as a wireless operator. At the beginning of the Second World War when stationed at Northwood, with HQ Coastal Command, he was involved in a number of situations during air raids upon London. He later flew as an aircrew member on Mitchell, Liberator, and Halifax bombers with Coastal Command. Narrowly escaping death on several occasions he was encouraged by a number of 'spirit' messages he received - through the mediumship of a retired elderly medium - from his dead father and several RAF comrades killed earlier in the war. The medium also described to him the features and characteristics of a young woman he was destined to meet and marry in a sunny land. An event that happened two years later, when he met Rena in Greece - after his aircraft was forced to remain at Athens because of engine trouble. After the war he flew on Dakota aircraft with Transport Command, flying throughout India, Pakistan, Egypt and Greece - where his plane was shot down by Communist forces after accidentally overflying the border with Yugoslavia. He became stationed in Greece in 1949 where, after a series of incidents, he married Rena and they returned to the UK in 1950. Since then they have remained together - happily married for over fifty years.
Book Description
This book discusses the landmarks of Piaget's personal and professional development that culminated in his seminal theory of genetic psychology.
Customer Reviews:
Quick, clear, comprehensive.......2006-10-03
This 150-page book is a very quick read, having the "for Beginners" format of pictures and cartoons mixed with very concise text. The book gave me an appreciation for Piaget far beyond his most famous idea of the "stages" of cognitive development, which is actually only covered very late in the book. Piaget was as much epistemologist as psychological theorist and researcher. This is a fine and entertaining overview. The explanations are short and merely give one an appetite for more details, but what is said seems to be stated very carefully and clearly. All in all, a few hours well spent if one seeks an introduction to Piaget.

Book Description
English translations of traditional Chinese medical texts rarely have conformed to the standards required of a contribution to sinology. One exception has been the first edition of Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine, a ground-breaking translation of the Zhong Yi Ji Chu Xue which demonstrated that not only was it possible to meet scholarly expectations for the translations of T.C.M, but that the cooperation of living Chinese speaking clinicians could reveal nuances of practice. Beyond beginner's manuals, it gives English-speaking students of TCM a chance to appreciate the qualitative details available to their Chinese-speaking colleagues. It offers readers the rare opportunity to understand Chinese medicine, not as it is perceived by a Western writer, but as it is perceived and taught in China, because Chinese descriptions of TCM that confound Western expectations have not been expunged from the textual translation.
The newly revised edition incorporates experience from utilization of the work as a coursebook for teaching, not only in the West but in China. Based on the suggestion and aid of Western teachers and translators, this new, popularly priced edition features a simplified but precise English terminology, thousands of source Chinese characters, and hundreds of clinical definitions never before available in English. Contents include yin and yang and the five phases; qi, blood, essence, and fluids; the channels; the organs; diseases and their causes. Pattern identification and treatment of eight-parameter, organ, qi-blood, pathogens, and exogenous heat conditions are discussed in detail, as are the principles and methods of treatment. Illustrative acumoxa therapy has been added for Western acupuncturists.
The revised edition includes explanations of terms and an entire materia medica and formulary sufficient to practice the treatments described by the text. As such it is not only a unique, absolutely-defined and referenced text, but a self-contained and inexpensive course of study. As a basic text produced to a multi-author, multi-publisher voluntary standard, the revised Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine is a bridge between scholars and clinicians in both East and West.

CM.......2006-11-04
This is a great book for current practitioners and students of Chinese Medicine, regardless if your dicipline is herbal, acupuncture, or both. It's main approach is 8 principle, but those of the 5 element philosphy can gain from it also. The lay person may have a difficult time understanding without being familiar with the general philosphy of Chinese Medicine.
Much underappreciated.......2006-09-06
I've always thought this is a great textbook on basic Chinese medicine. I wish more schools used it as their basic introductory text. The material is authoritative and the terminology is accurate. I think you get a lot of value for your money with this book. I far prefer it to Giovanni Maciocia's Foundations book. This book could solve a lot of the problems in the TCM schools in North America.
For basic theory, look no further.......2004-01-30
It's too bad that Fundamentals has not received more attention from credentialing bodies and colleges of Chinese medicine in the US. It compiles and translates some excellent Chinese sources on Chinese medical theory and synthesizes them into an organized and coherent textbook.
Every introductory theory textbook covers the same content, at least in principle. Fundamentals stands out from the crowd because it is one of the few books available in English to discuss treatment principles and their position in the logical sequence of examination, pattern identification, establishment of treatment principles, and detailed treatment according to those principles. This sequence is the hallmark of the TCM style of Chinese medicine and is what makes TCM effective. Most English-language books on theory give short shrift or no space at all to treatment principles, so it comes as no surprise that this is an aspect of Chinese medicine which is often overlooked in the West. Omitting this step in the logical sequence of the TCM method leads to inappropriate treatment and confusion about treatment outcomes.
Some may find initially Fundamentals to be initially difficult or quirky, because it employs the Wiseman/Ye standard terminology, but the excellent glossary section, complete with definitions, Pinyin romanization and Chinese characters should make it accessible to everyone.
For its in-depth discussion of TCM treatment principles and how they support the logical sequence of TCM, illustrated with many examples, including representative acupuncture and herbal prescriptions, Fundamentals deserves a place in the library of every student and practitioner.
EXCELLENT, FUNDAMENTAL, ESSENTIAL!!.......2003-10-27
This book is like a complete textbook on Chinese Medicine. It goes over all the fundamental theories in great depth and detail. Beginning with the Yin-Yang theories and going through the Five Phases, 8 principles, and everything else, this book provides all the necessary information. It does read like a textbook, but only because it IS a textbook! I am not enrolled in a school of Oriental medicine, but I bought this book and I LOVE it. It was inexpensive for its size and the amount of information it provides. I am able to read it even though I have not had any formal training in TCM, yet I think experienced students and even practitioners will find this book useful and complete.
An essential must for any TCM library!
good book, confusing translation.......2000-07-10
I like the book, but the translation seems confusing at times. For example, on p. 29: "The channels and network vessels include the channel vessels and the network vessels." What does this mean, exactly? Grammatically, the sentence says only that "channels" include "channel vessels" (since network vessels obviously include network vessels -- the sentence is redundant.) Also, grammatically, "channel vessels" should be a kind of vessel, related to channels (as opposed to networks). To make things more confusing, a few lines later, we get: "There are two types of channel vessels: the twelve channels and the eight extraordinary vessels." This sentence says that a "channel" is a type of "channel vessel", which seems to contradict the earlier sentence (which said that a "channel vessel" was a type of channel), as well as the notion that a "channel vessel" is a type of vessel. As a software engineer experienced in object-oriented analysis, I'm frustrated that I'm completely unable to determine the relationship between "channels", "channel vessels", "network vessels", "extraordinary vessels", and "vessels".

This book has very limited Mexican food. The recipes are poor, as are the directions. I suggest trying a different book.
It's the real thing, y'all........2000-11-26
I grew up on the Texas-Mexico border surrounded by terrific Mexican restaurants, both gourmet and hole in the wall. After I moved to the Northwest I went into Mexican food withdrawal, since nothing in my new area really deserves the name of Mexican food. I got so desperate I decided I would learn to make it myself. I went through a lot of cookbooks to find this--and it tastes like home. The acid test: my southwestern relatives came up for a visit and said these were the best enchiladas they'd ever tasted. At six bucks, what a bargain!
Book Description
Identifying shorebirds can be a challenge--and having a field guide specifically devoted to the species gives any birder an edge. Yet until now, no guide has illustrated or described the complete range of North and Central American shorebirds.
Dennis Paulson's book more than corrects that deficiency. This beautifully illustrated volume represents the first complete guide to North and Central American shorebirds ever published.
Unlike other guide books, which have traditionally relied on paintings to represent shorebirds, this one contains an extensive series of striking photographs--most never published before. More than 530 photos illustrate all shorebird species in their varied plumage, and are accompanied by text that points out the variation within common species.
The book also includes identification tips and ways for distinguishing shorebirds from all similar species, at rest and in flight. Brief descriptions of voice, behavior, habitat, and range are given for each species.
- First complete guide to North American and Central American shorebirds
- More than 530 striking photos
- Identification tips
- Descriptions of voice, behavior, habitat, and range

Fantastic Shorebird Guide.......2006-11-10
The best field guide for shorebirds that I have seen. Great photos, well organized. I refer to it often!
Shorebirds of North America by Dennis Paulson.......2006-03-17
Shorebirds of North America is a keeper! Absolutely stunning pictures showing virtually every bird in flight as well as on the ground in a multitude of plumages. The interesting, informative, well written descriptions make this a better arm-chair book, than field book.
That said, however, it's certainly small enough to be carried afield; it's smaller than Sibley's Guide and ruggedly constructed. The bird pictures are exceptional and elaborate showing many molt stages and picularities. As a visual person, I find this not simply helpful for me, but absolutely necessary for shorebirds. The descriptions Paulson uses for identification are practical, comparative, clear and easy to understand. There is much discussion of plumages, voice and distinctive characteristics both in flight and on the ground.
I loved the table of estimated populations of these birds. It answered my question about the Snowy Plover in Washington state and why eveyone seemed so concerned. Paulson estimates their population at 15, 700.
He has a well illustrated section on anatomy that provides a guide for terms used in the book such as mantle line, upper and lower scapular line, primary projection and more. There's sound information on individual variation from feather wear and fade, unusual plumages, hybridization, and molts.
The only disappointment for me was the quick list of species on the inside cover. It's done numerically and I would have liked the listing alphabetical for speedy look-up. I think it's faster to go to the table of contents where the species are broken down by type - plovers, sandpipers, curlews, etc.
As I said of another book recently reviewed, this one should have a higher rating than shown, like 43/4 stars, but that choice is not available.
I bought it as a companion book to Stokes Beginner's Guide to Shorebirds and I am not disappointed with the pair, they compliment (and supplement) each other. In short, this book with the information it contains is 'worth the money'.
Great Reference for Birders.......2006-01-31
The book covers 94 species of shorebirds for North America including familiar species and rarities.
The wide selection of photos show birds in flight as well as average plumage differences between breeding adults, non-breeding adults and juveniles. For each species, you get information on size, plumage, identification, behavior, voice, habitat and range.
This is a great addition to any birders' library or useful for anyone living near the shore.
No Herons, ducks or anything other than Sandpiper-like birds..........2005-12-09
I was thinking this book would cover everything that you would typically find near salt water and marshes, like Herons, Ducks, Widgeons, Loons, Geese, Gulls, etc. It only covers a very narrow range of sandpiper, plover and stints.
However, if that is what you want, this appears to be a very nice book with a heavy-duty cover.
Wonderful guide.......2005-08-01
This is a beautiful book on shorebird identification. I've found this guide to be an essential addition to my bookshelf, primarily due to the quality and variety of photographs. For many of the included species, the wide selection of photographs show birds in flight as well as average plumage differences between breeding adults, non-breeding adults, and juveniles, allowing for the careful study of differences within species as well as between species. I also found the identification tips to be very valuable, as the discussion includes useful comparisons between similar species for birds both on the ground and in flight. The discussions of habitat and behavior are not extensive but provide sufficient detail, and the voice descriptions are very helpful.
The lack of range maps is well-balanced by a short discussion on range for each species, and may even be a blessing. A single glance at range maps can be misleading, as there can be wide variations in the timing of when individual shorebirds of some species may depart from or arrive on their wintering grounds. For example, the range maps in both the Sibley's guides and the National Audubon Society field guides show that Ruddy Turnstones should only be found in the Carolinas during the "winter" season - I've watched Ruddy Turnstones in full breeding plumage foraging on South Carolina beaches in early August, presumably early migrants who have already completed their nesting season and haven't yet begun molting into their non-breeding plumage. Another perfect example is the normal range of Northern Lapwing, an occasional Eurasian visitor to North America, whose rare visits have included Maine, New York, Maryland, and Florida.
This photographic guide to shorebirds is a lovely reference to accompany basic field guides, provides an excellent overview of what you might see in the field, and is a valuable resource for those who are passionate about shorebirds.

Fun - But Limited.......2006-05-09
This book offers some wonderful traditional Turkish socks. Incredibly colorful and interesting, but not something you would wear every day. I've found that I made one pair of socks out of this book (as a gift) - but I haven't made any others.
I may consider using these socks as Christmas Stocking Socks.
Why re-print a Great Book with a New Title?.......2001-07-14
This is a great book but is word for word, page for page identical with Anna's 1994 "Fancy Feet: Traditional Knitting Patterns of Turkey". I was very excited to order a new sock book by AZ, but this is not new... If you don't have "Fancy Feet" and like colored knitting or sock knitting, it's a great work otherwise, skip the annoyance of buying a book that you already own.
Keyword is Reprint.......2001-04-06
Another reviewer has put the most important part last. This is a reprint of a great classic. Do NOT buy this book if you already have Zilboorg's Fancy Feet! Unless of course you want to make someone a gift or be sure you have copies at your beach house, the ranch, AND your Paris flat! I loved Fancy Feet and drooled on the pictures quite a while before making socks. Anna's instructions are clear, but you do have to take charge, chart out your design and *think* a bit. This kind of knitting becomes a meditation. The designs are wonderful, and anybody with feet can take pleasure in such happy socks, if only on winter evenings at home. I find that using the shortest 11-12" metal circular needles (Addi Turbo from Patternworks) allows me to do the two-handed color pattern knitting around and around without stopping to change double pointed needles. Once you figure out what size needles get you 6 st/in in the color patterns (or whatever gauge you please), the actual knitting is a joy.
Knit socks from the toe up; or use Turkish patterns all over.......2001-03-28
This knitting book is doubly useful. You can learn to knit socks from the toe up. Normally, socks in Western European countries and the Americas are knitting from the cuff down. But you can knit a sock starting at the toe, increasing until the foot width is sufficient, and go on from there. The heel can be inset a number of ways, but is not turned as in cuff-down socks. The instructions Anna Zilboorg provides are about the best I have seen for doing toe-up designs. It isn't easy at first to negotiate the 4 needles and the few stitches on them, but it is worth learning because it is a fun and useful technique.
Eastern European socks are mostly knitted toe up. So this is something new for many knitters. Turkish designs are also something new; they have the property of balancing the "positive" and "negative" parts of the design, meaning that the design and background colors are about equal in importance. The repetitive nature of the Turkish patterns makes it rather easy to create some pretty complex looking designs. They lend themselves to gorgeous colors, as in this book. Designer Anna Zilboorg is particularly well-known for her color work and she dyes her own wools to get some of the striking color combinations.
Even if you are not a sock knitter, the Turkish patterns are very useful for adding to vests, sweaters and afghans. They are very pretty and fun to knit. So if you decide you don't want to make socks, you can use the color and patterns to spice up some other types of garments.
This book is reprinted from "Fancy Feet" which went out of print and looks very spiffy in its new cover design.

Barry White is not a man who does things half-heartedly. When he loves, he loves with his whole being; when he makes music, he pulls out all the stops; and when he writes his autobiography, he packs it full of life lessons, explanations of the inspiration behind his songs, and meditations on the nature of Love. Though he authored this book with writing partner Marc Eliot, fans of White's lyrics will not be disappointed by Love Unlimited's prose style. "The power in my music comes from the way I try to deliver what I believe is the power of love," White explains, "All of my songs essentially give out the same message, from me to you--I am, you are, and it is." Though Love Unlimited covers White's gangbanger youth and brief stint in juvenile detention, his essential, positive outlook keeps him from dwelling too long on the bad times--he's much more effusive about his lifelong affair with Lady Music. It is in regard to White's human affairs that the book delivers its real surprises--a man who has earned the nickname "Guru of Love" and who routinely has house keys mailed to him by adoring fans might be justified in a few racy escapades, but White portrays himself as a family man and even a bit of a homebody, preferring to devote himself to one special lady at a time. Overall, White comes off as an immensely likable, stand-up guy who just happens to have a god-given ability to talk to women. (Even as a teen, he played Cyrano for his brother's phone calls to young women and counseled neighborhood couples in trouble.) You too may benefit from the deeply romantic, common-sense advice White sprinkles throughout the book. So run yourself as bubble bath, light some scented candles, put on your favorite Barry White album, and sink in to Love Unlimited. --Ali Davis
Book Description
"I see a world of beauty and perfection, and I strive through my music to spread that vision, to help make this planet we call home a better, more desirable place for us to love one another, to procreate, and to keep our spirits renewed."
In his much anticipated memoir, Barry White, the international pop and R&B legend whose music has carried countless couples from first kisses to the walk down the aisle, takes his legendary singing voice from the airwaves to the page.
With honesty, warmth, and his signature sensuality, White recounts his rough road to superstardom and shares his deepest feelings and wise philosophy. Born into the tough streets of South Central Los Angeles to a single mother, Barry ran with the "oldest, baddest, and most envied" gang and was hooked on fighting, drinking, and stealing when he wound up in Juvenile Hall at age sixteen. While behind bars, he had a life-shaking epiphany that changed the direction of his life. From that moment on Barry vowed to get and stay on a straight, hardworking path and fulfill his dream of making music. He dropped out of school and literally walked to Hollywood to make his fortune.
Love Unlimited follows Barry from his hungry years as a jack of all trades, struggling to support a wife and four small children, to his first professional gig in the music business as a talent spotter; from his breakthrough producing the girls he named Love Unlimited to his own emergence into the international spotlight as a producer, songwriter, and singer renowned for his deep bass and gift for articulating the needs and desires of both men and women. At every step, the Maestro offers heartfelt reflections on self-pride and perseverance, the bonds of family and friendship, the key elements to keeping a lover happy, and the true meaning of ecstasy.
Barry also explores the relationships that have inspired him--from his profound love of his mother, who bought him his first piano, his brother, who didn't have music to save him, his love Glodean, and his children, to his ultimate love, Lady Music. He also discusses his relationships with such legends and luminaries as Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Muhammed Ali, and Maxine Waters.
Featuring intimate, behind-the-scenes photographs, a complete discography, and some of his favorite lyrics,
Love Unlimited is Barry's ultimate love song for his fans.

An Encouraging & Uplifting Transformation.......2005-10-01
This is an excellent autobiography! If you have always loved Barry White's music, after reading this book, you will also love Barry White the Man.
The Sound of Distinction.......2005-02-05
When most people think of Barry White they remember the smooth, sexy baritone voice, which always seemed to resonate love. His voice was distinctive and so was his musical style, but his life was a rags-to-riches tale. LOVE UNLIMITED, written prior to his death, describes Barry's life from the rough streets of Compton, California through his rise to fame as "The Maestro". Readers will also get a glimpse into his love of family and his true love, Lady Music.
Barry White was raised by a single mother who did all she could to make sure her sons would do well and become successful. However, it didn't stop them from being acquainted with gangs and spending some time in jail. Yet, Barry was the only one of her sons to realize that he didn't want to spend his life in jail or become a disappointment to his mother. The one thing Barry had an affinity for was music. He loved music and when a spiritual voice came to him one day encouraging him to follow the musical road, he did just that. Dropping out of high school and on a wing and a prayer, Barry set out for Hollywood to follow his calling. His road to success was long and hard work. Even with marriage and a family, he refused to give up his dream. With the help of friends, support of his mother and pure determination he accomplished much with little formal training.
LOVE UNLIMITED gives readers insight into the hard-nosed world of the music industry and Barry White's passion. He loved his family, took care of his children and when he loved, he loved deeply. There were lean years before the success and even with success there were problems. He persevered to follow the spiritual voice that continued to speak to him throughout his life. His music was an extension of him as a human being. This was a man of honor who didn't drink, smoke, or party. He was the epitome of his music. This was a wonderful and discerning look at The Maestro, as he was often called. There are no scandals to read within the pages, but it is a fulfilling look into Barry's life and the creative power behind his music.

Memoirs from the Maestro........2004-01-03
Barry White's life wasn't all love and togetherness as his many hits have prescribed to any lovers out there, but still, having fought his way out of poverty by binding his love of life with his true love of music paved the way to him becoming the icon he will always be. Yeah, there may be a little ego, but he deserves it. Barry's struggle from Compton to being swindled as an employee of a toy store to the dissolution of his first marriage may have broken his spirit, but made him a better man. The most interesting part of his life was the business aspect, especially the parts that dealt with the record company dismissing him and not wanting to acknoledge his gifts, yet reaping the millions of dollars he was making them. Filled with highs and lows, this autobiography wasn't the best I ever read, but made the closer look at Barry's life intriquing.
Oh, Barry Please!.......2002-07-06
Overall, I found the book to be well written and worth one's money if you are a fan, but, as one of his classic songs are entitled, "BEWARE! He may literally make you sick with his grandiose, egotistical, "I am music, I gave music life" persona. He truly believes he is the "Black Sinatra", or as he puts it, singers, before his arrival onto the music scene, were either "stupid", "leeches", or crybabies".
He outright tells Issac Hayes and Lou Rawls that they are not on his level as artists, not to mention that, according to this book, everyone from Muhammad Ali to Michael Jackson were living in darkness until he arrived on the scene and enriched their lives with his sacred wisdom and guidance- as if he was Jesus Christ. He even leads himself to believe that his deciding to do commercials in the 1990's lead to some sudden surge of black artists being offered commercial endorsements, citing B.B. King and Aretha Franklin- Oh Please Barry! Both Aretha's and B.B's respective careers have endured longer and achievements are far greater than yours. And by the way, they were singing jingles before you came on the scene.
The most sickening moment, however, has to be his comments in regards to the late, great, Marvin Gaye, whom he appears convinced he could have straightened out- And, of course, Marvin begged him to produce him!
Throughout the book, he makes numerous suggestions as to the many artists who have come to him asking him to produce them. Funny thing though, outside of his groups, Love Unlimited (Orchestra), he has never!
Not suprisingly, he also fails to mention that his big comeback hit, 1994's "Practice What You Preach", was actually written and produced by Gerald Levert. So Barry, that, my friend, was the key to the success of your album, "The Icon is Love". And boy, isn't it strange, after reading this memoir, you will have to ask yourself, "If everyone was worshipping Barry, who was listening to Luther? Just a thought.
Barry is much too full of himself- literally and philosophically. If you can stomach his overly inflated ego, you actually may enjoy this book!
Can't Get Enough of This Book, Babe!.......2000-04-27
Here is a man who was, for a brief moment, in the company of Malcolm X, got jacked around by his first record label and is able to shrug it off and learn from it, and pass along his wisdom and the benefits of his experiences both to his peers in the entertainment field and to the world at large through this wonderful, insightful, inspirational book. How refreshing it is to see such honesty in such a large package!
Update: the Maestro died tonight, July 4, 2003. Get this book, however you can get it, if you truly want to understand the drive it takes to come from nothing and make something of yourself. Iris Gross Georg

A Friend Between Enemies.......2005-01-20
Michael Dolan has lived as a professional journalist in the Middle East for over two of the five decades he covers in "Israel at the Crossroads."
Assignments have continued to be awarded to him from leading media outlets throughout the world.
His balanced firsthand reporting of the events surrounding the struggles for the land of Israel begins with a detailed examination of Arab as well as Jewish history. He follows up with a delineation of the religious aspects of the ongoing conflict from both perspectives of Islam and Judaism.
Mr. Dolan's friendships with individuals from both camps is evident in his delicate presentation of the people centered, according to Scripture, as 'the apple of God's eye.' {Deuteronomy 32:10; Zechariah 2:8}

Brilliant Insight & History Of Middle East Conflict........2002-09-07
This is an excellent account of the history of the Jewish state and it's conflicts with the Arab world, including the Palestinian issue.
The book has a Biblical foundation and provides an objective analysis of the present situation.
This book is well written and easy to understand. It provides an insight from both sides of the conflict and much of the account is based on the personal experience of one who has experienced much of the conflict first hand & who lives in Jerusalem. Someone who has also reported on the ongoing conflict for a major media network.
I share the author's interest and love for the Holy Land and a large percentage of his opinions. I have listened to David Dolan speak on the subject and he possesses a wealth of information, knowledge and experience.
Highly recommended.
Fantastic.......2002-08-06
The Middle East Crisis has been a major TV news topic for at least the last 30 years. Nevertheless, most Americans have no clue what is going on over there. We continue to try to understand the situation based on Western logic while not understanding that the involved parties have a perspective that does not fit Western logic, bargaining, or compromise. This book gives a terrific overview of the topic.
excellent book.......2001-04-19
I found this book very interesting and quite informative. It gave a very objective and yet consise perspective on the modern developments in Israel and its continuing struggle with the Palestinian drive for Independence. I thought that the information on religious differences was also of much interest.
