The Pleasure of Her Company.......2000-11-08
As soon as I finished "Weeding At Dawn" I wanted to open to page one and start all over again, so much is the pleasure to be in Madrone's company as she weaves nonfiction story, journal entry or poem into a rich tapesty of life on the land. Readers who have joyed in the writings of such authors as May Sarton, Terry Tempest Williams, Annie Dillard, to name but a few, will find "Weeding At Dawn" another source for inspiration and delight. Madrone's memoir is richly detailed, deftly turned with just the right metaphors and images; the content is sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, sometimes sensual. It is an evocative portrayal of lesbian country life as well as an invitation to all readers to the meditative richness of rural solitude. Frankly, Thoreau's writings, while certainly full of words to ponder, pales in comparison to this memoir's life in the Oregon woods. I guarantee readers will love the pleasure of Madrone's company not once but many times.

Book Description
Is the average accountant being strangled by overregulation? Have traditional accounting and auditing practices been misunderstood and unfairly maligned? Can anything be done to reverse these damaging trends?
In the 1984 edition of this book, Eugene H. Flegm gave an emphatic yes to all three questions. However, none of his suggestions were followed and today the condition of the accounting profession (defined as to include those in business as well as public accounting) is in dire straits. The regulators--FASB, SEC and the AICPA--have continued to overwhelm practicing accountants with a continuation of detailed rules making.
In this updated version of his book, Mr. Flegm explains the causes of the current crisis, how the accounting profession and the FASB failed to deal with the developing problems 20 years ago, and how there is still some hope that the integrity of the profession can be restored.
He reiterates his basic belief that only an historical cost based system can be used to establish the badly needed reliability in financial data which after all is why financial statements are relevant at all. He also brings to question whether or not the AICPA and the public auditing firms have not forfeited their self regulation franchise.

An authoritative introduction to the world of map collecting
Customer Reviews:
A must have book for the map collector.......2006-08-14
If I could have just one book on map collecting this would be it. The book is an enjoyable read, and written in a crystal clear fashion. The book contains much essential information for collectors: map terminology, printing methods, translation of common phrases into English, how to judge condition, and blunt advice on the workings of the marketplace. All of this plus great reference material on map makers, styles, and periods. I've had this book for several years now and find myself reachnig for it time and again. Thank you Dr. Manasek!
Outstanding book.......2004-06-24
This is truly an outstanding book. It is exceptionally well-written and the number of illustrations is exceptional. Unlike most map books, this one uses illustrations to make specific points about maps, as well as to show what the map looks like. There is a huge amount of information in here - including such things as illustrated details about pocket map construciton, microscope pictures of paper, information about acids (for the non-chemist!) and a wonderful section of over a hundred maps, one per page, arranged chronologically. I found the CollectingOldMaps website a very valuable collateral since it shows up-to-date prices for all the maps in the book. The readability and info in this book make it a bargain - it is beautiful, also!
A very useful, substantial book.......2002-03-26
A book of substance. "Collecting Old Maps" really deals with the subject and is not a watered-down survey of old maps someone thinks we should collect. This book breaks with the old way map books were written and is a refreshing "out of the box" way to look at old map collecting. There is no other book like it and I don't know where else one can get the information that is in here. Very well written, a delight to read and not dumbed-down. There is even some sly humor in here! I agree with the earlier reviews so there is no point in repeating everything they said.
Great present!.......2002-01-31
Love the book! Well written and very informative. I agree with the previous reviewers. I thank the autor.
Wow!.......2000-12-31
Got this book for Christmas and read the whole thing through. Unlike other map reference books in my collection, I actually read this one cover to cover! It is a remarkable book and the author shares what is a vast knowledge with us in a very unusual and direct way. The illustrations are really great and there are lots of them. Where else, for example, can you learn the names of the different parts of a folding map, with each part illustrated with real examples? Every page seems to have several. It is a big and very beautiful book. I will now go and re-read it.

Book Description
Each of the extraordinary hand-crocheted afghans displayed here in magnificent photos is a blue-ribbon winner. They've all taken the top prize at one of America's state fairs-the prime public venue for showing off the best of our nation's traditional crafts. The styles, colors, and patterns are as varied as the folks who fashioned them, ranging from an afghan with an elegant white-on-white country design to one that has a wildly kaleidoscopic motif. Crocheters can recreate these wonderful items at home, thanks to patterns, detail shots, and instructions, and experience the charm that makes the state fair such a special part of American culture. Scattered throughout the text are fun facts about the fairs, along with new and vintage photos.
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous Afghans!.......2007-05-16
I ordered this book only after looking though it throughly. It does repeat the directions for a couple of afghans, however they look different because they are in different configurations. If you are an adventurous beginner, then it's very possible that seeing there are different methods of doing the same thing and getting very different results will encourage you to try branching out on your own. Personally I love it! I love the cowboy afghan, I made it for my grandson and he loves it too. I'm working on the Sunbonnet Sue, which is the real reason I purchased it. I love to sew as well as crochet but quilting is an entirely different matter so to be able to make one of my favorite quilting patterns in crochet was wonderful for me.
The pictures and the state fair information took me back to my years in high school when I and the entire home ec class had to entire our projects in the fair. It's a lovely book, I have enjoyed it very much and I'm even thinking of entering my work in the fair again. :) I would love to get a blue ribbon!
Awesome book!.......2007-04-11
This book is really one of the best i have seen on afghans! Great pictures and clear instructions. So many great patterns to choose from. Tons of great info on state fairs and rural life. I just love this one. I bought one for my sister and am buying one for myself. A must see!
IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH CREATIVITY TO WIN A BLUE RIBBON.......2007-02-22
I haven't made any of the afghans in this book yet, but I've read through most of the patterns pretty thouroughly, and I'm an experienced crocheter, so I think I can review it without having actually made an afghan from it.
First off, it's a very pretty book - heavy stock paper, afghans photographed very nicely, lots of State Fair pictures sprinkled throughout the pattern section. The first 21 pages of the book is a historical write-up of State Fairs in general. I only bought the book for the afghan patterns, and I don't have much interest in State Fairs, so I haven't read that section. Other reviewers have said it's nice, so I'll take their word for it.
So.... on to the patterns themselves. In a very generous count, there are 45 patterns in the book. But actually, it's less than that because some patterns are repeated. For instance, on pages 48-49 we have the South Carolina blue ribbon winner, a baby-blue afghan titled "Sweet Hearts". Then the next afghan on pages 50-51 is the Florida winner, a peach-colored version of the exact same afghan, again titled "Sweet Hearts". Here's the author's comment at the top of page 50, above the verbatim repeat of the instructions from the previous afghan - "Some designs are so wonderful that they deserve more than one blue ribbon". Maybe the design deserves more than one blue ribbon, but it doesn't deserve to be shown twice in the same pattern book with a repeat of the instructions. Another example is pages 58-59, which shows the Arkansas winner "Baby ABC's Afghan", followed pages 60-61, the South Carolina winner of the exact same pattern. Different colors again, but the exact instructions printed/reprinted for each one.
While there are some interesting designs in the book, there are also a number of very basic afghans - several very similar versions of granny squares, several versions of just the standard ripple stitch. There must not have been a lot of competition in Nebraska, because the blue ribbon winner was a simple, single crochet ripple stitch, all in one color. And this simplest of simple afghans is labeled "Original Design", as if this were a brand new thing that someone just thought up. I'm sure it was made really well, but it hardly qualifies as "Original".
Which brings me to another disappointment - There are a few afghans labeled "Original Design" (some that deserve it, some that don't), but most of the patterns are from previously published sources, and are labeled "Pattern courtesy of ....." (fill in the blank with Coats&Clark, Leisure Arts, Annie's Attic, etc.), which means that if you have a good collection of afghan patterns already, you won't see much in this book that's new. I'll admit that I have a LOT of afghan books, more than what we might call "normal people", so maybe this bothers me more than it would others.
I suppose this has to do with copyright issues, but the "courtesy of" patterns are printed exactly as they were originally published, with no alterations for how the pictured afghan was actually made. At the end of the pattern, there might be something like this from p.79 - "She used an original edging rather than the fringe called for in the instructions" - but there aren't any instructions for the edging she actually used. Or this from p. 84 - "She altered some of the cross-stitch blocks" - but no charts for the designs in the picture.
So overall, if you're looking for a beautifully designed book as a gift for someone, or if you don't already have a collection of afghan patterns, this might be a good choice for you. But if you're looking for something new and interesting, you won't find much of it here.
Most Beautiful Afghans.......2006-11-10
I have made almost every afghan in this book and I will continue using these patterns w/different colors and yarns to repeat their beauty throughout my life. I believe they will be airlooms that will be cherished always. Liz Anderson
Varied and creative designs.......2006-11-04
One of the best books I have ever seen. A bargain for your money. There are 40 designs, and each is better than the last.
Book Description
Nature crafted by man
The Japanese garden, like all gardens, is more than mere nature; it is nature crafted by man. It needs the hands of the designer to give it meaning. The Japanese garden belongs to the realm of architecture; at its best, it is nature as art. The phases of its history document the constant redefinition of man's position within and towards nature. Its changing forms respond both to socio-economic developments and to religious and philosophical trends, and thereby reflect the spiritual climate in which its architecture was conceived.
At the same time as detailing the characteristics distinguishing and differentiating each of the five major epochs in the history of the Japanese garden, the author identifies the common motif which underlies them all: the recurrent attempt to unite beauty as natural accident and beauty as human-perfected type, to achieve an aesthetic symbiosis between the seeming randomness of natural form and the strict geometry of the right angle.
Customer Reviews:
Man's search for his place in nature is a search for himself.......2006-05-12
"...our earth is both a living and conscious entity. . .when a human being becomes conscious of himself as part of the earth, and of the earth as part of the universe, so the universe itself thereby becomes conscious of itself. . . enlightenment. . .consciousness becoming aware of itself.
At this delicate moment... a flower opens in the "garden" of the universe."
Japanese Gardens is a 239 page historical visual spiritual odyssey through man's interpretation of nature in confined space. Chapter subheadings focus atmosphere: Gardens as mindscapes, Gardens as subsitutes for travel, Gardens of seclusion, Gardens of austerity, Gardens of joy.
Drawings, b/w and color photos illustrate the history and evolution of Japanese garden design.
The book Intimate Spaces by Joe Earle, exclusively color photographs of spiritual gardens, is a fine complement to Nitschke's book with it's comprehensive written text.
Video sources of garden inspiration can be seen in movie backgrounds: Shogun (5 disc 12 hour miniseries on DVD with extra disc explaining tea ceremony, geisha, samurai), Sayonara (tiny household garden, public garden spaces), The Last Samurai (community as garden, cherry blossom garden), Memoirs of a Geisha (cherry blossom garden).
Actual Japanese Gardens to visit: Japanese Garden San Francisco, Japanese Garden Portland Oregon, Hakone Garden (site of filming of Memoirs of Geisha) Saratoga Village (south of San Francisco) California.
Thoughtful quiet moving book.

The Johns Hopkins Medical Guide To Health After 50 (193308717X, $39.95) offers the latest recommendations from Hopkins specialists covering over a hundred major medical concerns of people fifty and over. An A-Z format makes for a quick reference which simplifies the search for information, while sections on disease prevention and color illustrations throughout enhance the information provided. Especially valuable are tips on treatments, options, follow-up and common illnesses that strike after 50.
very useful.......2003-07-21
comprehensive, incredibly useful and easy to read.
Definitely worth keeping in the home.
Extensive and right on target.......2003-06-14
From the highly respected John Hopkins University Medical School, "The John Hopkins Medical Guide to Health After 50" provides extensive information in an easy to use and easy to understand format. It is logically divided into three major divisions plus several extremely useful appendices. The three major divisions are Disease Prevention, a thorough Body Atlas, and the alphabetic Guide to Medical Disorders.
The section on Disease Prevention includes information on longevity, exercises, diet, Weight control, smoking, alcohol, and screening tests. It carefully discusses each of these items and their importance to keeping healthy.
The section on the Body Atlas is exactly what you would expect from the name. It is thoroughly illustrated and covers all major organs and structures of the body including the skeletal system, eyes, ears, endocrine system, digestive system, and others. The only one that I found lacking was the part on the muscular system. With a frontal view of the muscular system it clearly shows how they relate to each other, however, there was no illustration of the muscular system of the back. Since back problems are fairly common as we age I would have like to have seen a view of the back muscles in addition to the frontal. All the illustrations provided are detailed, in full color and well designed.
The Medical Disorders division is by far the most extensive section. It covers all the expected items such as arthritis, breast cancer, chronic pain, coronary disease, and emphysema. But it also includes some unexpected topics such as bipolar disorder, sleeping problems, and even wrinkles. Each disorder typically include information on causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, side effects, involved structures, current research, and alternative therapies. It is easy to look through a particular disorder and come away with sufficient knowledge to intelligently discuss the condition with your physician. Knowing what questions to ask and the purpose of a suggested treatment regimen is a critical step in taking control and responsibility for your own health. This book provides you with that knowledge.
A very highly recommended book, it is extensive in its coverage, filled with excellent illustrations that clearly demonstrate the accompanying text, contains a medical glossary, and a thorough listing of support groups and organizations for various disorders. With over a hundred specific ailments common in people over 50 this is an important reference text for any home.
An excellent book, beautifully produced.......2002-10-30
A terrific guide to all of the major medical disorders for people who reach a certain age! Easy use A to Z format, colorful illustrations, and written in clear language, this is a must-have medical book for yourself, or for a loved one. It is ideal for people caring for their elderly relatives as well.

A good book for anyone to have.......2003-01-24
I am about to enter a 4 month training school to be a Pharmacy Tech in the military. I wanted something to look over to generally familiarize myself with some common drugs, without too much overwhelming or detailed information. This book is perfect for that. It's quite a big book with lots and lots of different drug profiles, including common brand names of that drug and some very very general info about what it does, how it works, side effects, etc. It has an index of different categories of diseases and ailments that you can use to search for a specific drug, or you can search by the brand name to find the actual drug (ie searching for Tylenol takes you to Acetamenophin and so on...). Otherwise you can simply flip through the drugs alphabetically. I wish the explainations of how they work were a little more in depth, but for its purpose it works perfectly as a very easy-to-comprehend reference guide for the general population on drugs. And it's nicely packaged to boot with sturdy smooth pages and color pictures - not cheaply made at all.
A super reference book.......2002-12-12
This book could not be more easy to use! Everything you need to know about the drug on one page! Very current, and from Johns Hopkins, no less. It has a great index, with both generic names and brand names listed, and is fully illustrated in color. An excellent book to own or give as a gift. the chart on grapefruit juice interactions could save your life!
Book Description
No composer contributed more to film than Bernard Herrmann, who in over 40 scores enriched the work of such directors as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, François Truffaut, and Martin Scorsese. In this first major biography of the composer, Steven C. Smith explores the interrelationships between Herrmann's music and his turbulent personal life, using much previously unpublished information to illustrate Herrmann's often outrageous behavior, his working methods, and why his music has had such lasting impact.
From his first film (Citizen Kane) to his last (Taxi Driver), Herrmann was a master of evoking psychological nuance and dramatic tension through music, often using unheard-of instrumental combinations to suit the dramatic needs of a film. His scores are among the most distinguished ever written, ranging from the fantastic (Fahrenheit 451, The Day the Earth Stood Still) to the romantic (Obsession, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir) to the terrifying (Psycho).
Film was not the only medium in which Herrmann made a powerful mark. His radio broadcasts included Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre on the Air and The War of the Worlds. His concert music was commissioned and performed by the New York Philharmonic, and he was chief conductor of the CBS Symphony.
Almost as celebrated as these achievements are the enduring legends of Herrmann's combativeness and volatility. Smith separates myth from fact and draws upon heretofore unpublished material to illuminate Herrmann's life and influence. Herrmann remains as complex as any character in the films he scored--a creative genius, an indefatigable musicologist, an explosive bully, a generous and compassionate man who desperately sought friendship and love.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent survey of the great film composer.......2007-03-16
Bernard Herrmann is undoubtedly a genius, but he was also a tortured man. His ability to churn out scores under pressure for radio and then film is simply astonishing. He also found the time to orchestrate his scores, which was not common at the time.
His films scores added immeasurably to the the films they served - Vertigo, Psycho, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Taxi Driver, Citizen Kane, North by Northwest, The Magnificant Ambersons to name but a few. But despite this success he craved recognition as a "serious" composer and conductor. This book does him justice and it is hard to manage a better biography of the great man.
Could be much better.......2006-06-05
I realize this is probably the best (if not only) comprehensive bio on Herrmann, but I found the book a bit clumsy and disjointed. Whenever a particular piece of music or film score is reached, there is a sudden jump into in-depth musical analysis. I would have preferred to have read about his life and career first, and then read a separate book that explores the music itself. I didn't want to take the time to run out and buy a CD or DVD everytime an unfamiliar work or film is detailed, so I found myself skipping over the discussions of instrumentation, thematic material, etc. Perhaps later I will refer back to them for later study. The appendix listing his works for film, radio, television, and concert is a nice addition.
The biographical material is fine, with a point of noting all of the musicians, conductors, actors, etc. that Herrmann either knew, worked with, and more often, hated and criticized. The infamous break with Hitchcock was very well written, and is a fascinating story within itself on the clash of ego and power. The portrait of the composer is one of an incredible talent with superior knowledge of his art, but with a difficult personality that resulted in harm to his own life and career.
The text makes extensive use of long quotations and letters, which are in a slightly smaller font, but otherwise identical to the main text. I found this to be confusing at time, as most books that I have read will print these sections either indented or offset. It was probably the fault of the publisher, as this would have added quite a few more pages to the book.
I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in learning about film music, or just want to read about one of the most talented and amazing musicians of the twentieth century.
The go-to Herrmann bio, but it needed better editing.......2006-04-14
Though a major biography, the 1991 book has problems. There are mis-spellings ("Macken" is actually "Machen"), factual errors ("Riders to the Sea" is a one-act play, not a novel), and typos (e.g., "Herrmann like the film" should've been "Herrmann liked the film"). The prose is occasionally clumsy. There are inconsistencies. At one point we learn that Herrmann didn't drink, and later we find that he is drinking.
It is a challenge to tell when long quotes occur, since their typography is so close to the "normal" text. There is such a great proportion of quotes, there is at times a scrapbook feel. The running title at the top of a page does not indicate what chapter you are in, and each chapter heading should have indicated years of coverage in addition to its number. Most of what I am describing are editing problems, whose blame must be laid on the University of California Press. I hope the 2002 edition is better.
As a person, Bernard Herrmann was obnoxious, bullying, insulting, and disregarded the feelings of others. If this applied only to his music vocation, these qualities would be somewhat understandable, but he was liable to gratuitously lash out at whoever crossed his path, whether taxi drivers or party guests.
Nonetheless, his music is a thing for love, enthusiasm, and admiration.
Bernard Herrmann lives on!.......2005-04-07
One of filmdom's most innovative and influential composers was the late Bernard Herrmann. Remembered mostly for the six films that he scored for director Alfred Hitchcock, the composer had successes with other filmmakers, along with a long tenure as lead conductor of the CBS Orchestra on radio. During his time at CBS, he wrote many compositions for the medium, and finished an opera based on Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights".
Author Smith has compiled a fascinating look at Herrmann, exposing the man's genius that went hand-and-hand with his tempetuosity. The book also reveals how Herrmann suited his music for the characters that were to be seen onscreen, crafting each note to the storyline and the director's wishes.
"A Heart at Fire's Center" is a must-read for those that admire the man, as well as for those that have an interest in the nuances and mandates of scoring for the movies.
Fine reference book.......2004-07-26
Good book detailing the life and music of the finest of all film composers.
Fine insights to how the composer crafts his scores and how they
enhance the film. Herrmann was the master indeed. The NPR documentary "Bernard Herrmann: A Celebration of his Life and Music" that runs over 2 1/2 hours is a good companion piece to go with this book. Interestingly the book makes no mention of the Radio documentary, which has had much greater exposure than this book or the truncated video documentary.

This is the first volume of the first biography of Abraham Joshua Heschel, one of the outstanding Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. Edward K. Kaplan and Samuel H. Dresner trace Heschel’s life from his birth in Warsaw in 1907 to his emigration to the United States in 1940, describing his roots in Hasidic culture, his experiences in Poland and Germany, and his relations with Martin Buber.
“This first volume of a remarkable biography of one of the greatest Jewish thinkers and social activists of his generation must take its place in every home, in every library, Jewish and gentile alike. Written with warmth, passion, and grace, it offers the reader an insight into the man Heschel, whose teaching has uniquely influenced modern theology and inspired moral commitment.”—Elie Wiesel
"This book is simply stunning! . . . The authors . . . have a profound understanding of Heschel’s inner life, and they use all this information in order to craft a powerful portrait of a human being.”—Jack Riemer, Commonweal
“Th[is] long-awaited biography of Heschel cover[s] the author’s youth in Warsaw and education in Vilna and Berlin. . . . Kaplan and Dresner’s biography will hold broad popular interest while providing academics an important starting point from which to investigate critically the life and thought of this important thinker.”—Zachary Braiterman, Religious Studies Review
“Critical, careful attention [is paid] to Heschel’s words.”—Laurie Adlerstein, New York Times Book Review

The Multi-Faceted Heschel.......1999-06-30
The power of Heschel's influence on the philosophy of Jewish America cannot possibly be underestimated. Dr. Kaplan's valient attempt to analyze and research the life os this great thinker is to be commended. His descriptions of the piety of the man he calls a Prophet, may be distasteful to some of his more liberal admirers, but remains the unadulterated proud truth. For the great liberal thinker and activist never swayed from his religous beleifs. Though considered a leader in the Conservative movement, he remained an Orthodox Jew. Though Kaplan's descriptions of Heschel's father, who was a Chassidic Grand Rabbi and miracle worker are lacking understanding in Spirituality and therefore rather inacurate, which is troublesome to his more knowledgeble Chassidic readers, I eagerly await Volume II, on Heschel's years in America.
The "Prophet" in training.......1998-06-23
Among the American intellectual community, Abraham Joshua Heschel is probably the best known Jewish spiritual leader. of the 20th century. This resulting from his activist stance on the issue of Civil Rights in the early 1960's and his active and vocal opposition to the Vietnam War a bit later. Yet as time goes by ,few Americans,Jewish and gentiles alike are aware of Heschel, the scholar, Heschel the particularistic Jewish activist, and Heschel, the spiritual seeker. This biography throws light on the youth and education of this prophetic figure. We learn about Heschel's Chasidic background, his "royal" lineage, his sojurn in Vilna among secular Jews, his education and activities in Germany as well as his foray into the world of Yiddish poetry, and his scholarly publications. The book is well researched and finely written, with many illustrations. I only feel that those parts dealing with Heschel the Chasidic Jew and Yiddish poet lack some authenticity. The authors seem to go overboard to stress Heschel's ritual observance in Vilna and Berlin, such as strict adherence to the Kosher code ,to the laws of Shaatnez and the like. Its ironic that at the same time that a number of books and articles have recently appeared about the Lubavitcher rebbe's stay in Berlin, subtly questioning his Jewish committment, this book about a future leader of the Conservative Jewish movement maintains Heschel's strict ritual observance in Berlin. All in all this volume is a fascinating portrayal of the life of an East European Jew seeking new horizons and an education in the West, yet never forgetting his roots. It is an important contribution to the study of European Jewish life and thought in the 20th century.
