4 out of 5 stars 2 Thumbs up, BUT..........2002-06-18

I essentially picked up this book because I was interested in learning more about the experiences that children of gays and lesbians face while growing up.

I learned of Ms. Jakii and her autobiography on the Ananda Lewis show addressing the issues on Gay & Lesbian Parenting. I was eager to learn more about Ms. Jakii's childhood because 1, she is an African American female and 2, she was raised by a lesbian. Even though Ms. Jakii's opposition on the show for Gays and Lesbians to parent were weak, I still thought I would give her book a chance. I'm glad I did.

For the most part, I found `Like Mother Like Daughter?' to be an excellent read; probably one of the most inspiring books one would ever come across who've ever experience a similar background. Ms. Jakii does an outstanding job in recounting her tragic childhood and the healing process she had to endure in order to forgive her mother and to love herself. This book is definitely a tear-jerker! I would encourage anyone who is trying to heal from childhood abuse to pick up this book.

But there is a `But'...

Even though this is a wonderful read it falls short in one major area:

On the surface, it appears that Ms. Jakii's primary purpose in writing her book was to give personal insight on how children of Gay and Lesbians are negatively effected by their parent's sexual orientation. In my opinion I feel the reader is mislead into believing that Ms. Jakii's childhood was LARGELY ruined by her mother's lesbianism. But if you're smart enough to look past Ms. Jakii's (well understood) bitterness, hatred and homophobic attitude toward lesbians, you're able to see that her mother's sexual orientation is (relatively) circumstantial.

I don't mean to undermine Ms. Jaskii's experience with having a lesbian mother (she seemed to suffer greatly) but, her childhood seemed to be largely impacted by a loveless, irresponsible, hurting mother who, herself, had also suffered at the hands of her parents.
Like any dysfunctional family, the cycle of abuse, neglect and lack of responsibility was the underlying cause of Ms. Jakii's unhappy childhood. This is what I found prevalent in her story. Her mother's sexual orientation and frivolous lifestyle heighten that suffering and even made Ms. Jakiis' childhood painful. But for Ms. Jakii to place blame solely on her mother's sexual orientation grossly simplifies the events in her childhood and in the end, only adds to the misrepresentation of Gay and Lesbian parents and their children.

Even though I wouldn't recommend this book to other Gay and Lesbian parents (...Unless I knowingly believe they are a spitting image of `Dorothy') I do, in some respects believe Gay and Lesbian parents could take heed to Ms. Jakii's story. There is some validity in her approach.

In the preface, Ms Jakii speaks about the hardships that children of Gay and Lesbian parents have. She goes on to explain that "there is always a certain amount of shame and gender identity questions which linger in our hearts and minds...The homosexual community may never admit it, but the damage stemming from their actions can be profound..." I think Ms. Jakii was right on point. Gay and Lesbian parents do have a greater responsibility to their children--as do any parent whose children will face prejudice and prosecution due to being "different". The shame that Ms. Jakii speaks of can be conquered with (honest) continuous education, lots of unconditional love and affection, and a willingness to be the best progressive parent possible.

5 out of 5 stars Forgive and Love - Testimony of a Woman raised by Lesbian Mom.......2001-10-18

This is a book about a woman who was raised by a lesbian mother. The journey of the author from childhood through adulthood, from pain, anger, neglect, abuse, forgiveness and love is incredible. The honesty and openess of the author is refreshing and it gives the perspective of a child with a homosexual parent. The ramification of childhood has long lasting effects as evidenced throughout the book.
The writing is simple and blunt and it transported me into the pages of Jakii's life-which could easily be mine. There were times when I threw the book across the room in anger, there were moments when I was hysterical with laughter and throughout the entire book, I was brought to tears. This book caused me to examine my own relationship with my parents (who are not gay). It caused me to examine my relationships with others and it stirred a desire in me to know more of this love that Jakii found much later in her life after becoming a christian.

3 out of 5 stars Good background information.......2007-08-23

I bought this because I'm thinking I may want to make a few knives in the future, and I wanted to see what could be done in a low-commitment way.

The $50.00 limit is a bit arbitrary, and perhaps outdated. It really depends on scrounging a motor and making your own grinder/sander. That sounds like more trouble than it is worth, to me.

Other than that, I found the minimal equipment list a useful reference for any future excursions into this craft.

The book has a lot of information about Damascus-style blades made from steel cable; although an interesting concept, I don't care for the look of the blades, so I found that information of less value than the rest of the book.

The procedures for hardening and tempering, on the other hand, made me feel that this part of the process was actually accessible. Before reading this book, heat treating in general was an intimidating mystery. Now, it is just something that requires care and practice.

          5 out of 5 stars Hubby's Favorite Book.......2007-03-15

Even though he has not been able to buy an anvil yet, hubby has re-crafted several knives using the methods described in this book. It is only a few months old, but is already very worn and tattered. When ever he gets quite (no metal grinding or scraping noises), I know he has sat back down with his book for more inspiration or a bit of clarification.

          5 out of 5 stars Wayne Goddard's $50 knife shop.......2005-09-29

My best basic book, will answer all your questions, and will get you started and on your way,if you are not new to knife building it will reinforce you knowledge even more..

5 out of 5 stars Worth more than $50.......2004-09-16

I was hesitant on ordering this book, I've read or bought almost everything I can find relating to bladesmithing or blacksmithing. I got the book, and read it from front to back, then read it again. This book not only offers insight on how to make needed equipment, but also explains how to make knives of both stock removal, forging and wire damascus. I've never read a book on this subject where it felt like the author was talking directly to me, explaining things that I was thinking. This book is definitely one for the beginner smith.

          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-02-16

I got this book last night and have read it cover to cover. Wayne gives great confidence to the beginner. Just the simple fact that you don't have to go broke to make knives is very fullfilling. Some great shop tips and good ways of looking at shop problems.

Buy this book and David Boye's book, and you are well on your way.

5 out of 5 stars A recommended first book for new knifemakers.......2006-05-20

Wayne's first version of this book was the first knifemaking book i purchased. Wayne has guided me and been my mentor and friend from the first (approx 4 yrs ). This latest version is one of the best books a beginner could get. All the fotos and diagrams are in color which greatly helps in understanding the lessons. It has new fotos and diagrams all in color. Although this book has approx same number of pages as the original, it seems to contain 50% more info in it. I would reccommend this book to all knifemakers...beginner and experienced. Definitely a 5 star book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for beginners.......2006-05-10

I own both editions of this book. Wayne is a personal friend, and my mentor in knifemaking. It can be intimidating to read some publications and see all the high-tech machinery that some makers use. This book shows that people can develope their passion for making knives without spending a fortune. It is clear and concise, and takes alot of the guesswork out of being a beginner. Wayne learned knifemaking by trial and error, before there were books, magazines and videos on the subject. This book is a must have in the library of any knifemaker. I read mine constantly for reference and inspiration.

All that is needed are these three items, and you can make the cutest crafts! Because of the easy supply list, we use this book so much more often than other books that you might not have the needed supplies on hand for. This one we keep right in the kitchen and the children can make things whenever they like! we just got it for Christmas and have already made lots of the projects! and there is room to be creative - just using the ideas as examples and taking it from there.

5 out of 5 stars Teachers, get this art book!.......2002-07-14

For the last several years my summer school has included art every day for students whose ages range from 6-13. This book has an excellent selection of art projects that are appropriate for all these ages. Everything is made using construction paper, scissors and glue, which are readily available in the school supply room, are inexpensive and easy to work with. The projects turn out bright and colorful. My class has just completed a lively mural of a pond habitat after making fun frogs, fish, turtles and other aquatic creatures and plants, using ideas from the book.

I love the instructions and lay-out of the book. The steps and resulting project are clearly shown in large drawings with minimal text, so it just takes a few minutes to read through each project.

Some of the projects feature geometrical designs and patterns, which allow substantial room for creativity, some fold and curve paper to make them three dimensional. There is a good variety of themes including animals, seasons, nature, a still life, a robot, and a couple of cultural items. Although I haven't done it yet, the Panamanian mola looks like it will turn out stunning.

If I want to stick to using paper, glue and scissors for my art classes, this book will give us plenty of fun and attractive projects to do for several weeks. Parents will also find it a great source for young artists at home.

5 out of 5 stars Fun with construction paper creations.......2000-05-13

Cut-Paper Play is an excellent collection of over 80 kid-approved construction paper creations for children ages 4 to 10. The projects are grouped by 3 different skill and difficulty levels. A variety of techniques is shown. All you need is different kinds of paper or cardboard, scissors, glue, sometimes yarn or a stapler. So the crafts are inexpensive, but very amazing. Two- and three-dimensional projects, mobiles and seasonal projects are shown. We got inspiration for many more paper projects for the future!

3 out of 5 stars But not beyond Attachment Parenting.......2007-03-22

Lest you should stumble upon 'Beyond the Birds and the Bees' on Amazon or in a Catholic book store without knowing much about the author, as I did, be advised that this at times useful book is wedded to Popcak's devotion to so-called 'Attachment Parenting.' According to this controversial theory, parental bonding in infancy is sacrosanct and justifies going to extreme lengths like co-sleeping and 'baby-slinging,' i.e., carrying your infant in a sling-like device for upwards of ten hours a day. Unfortunately, a fair amount of moral absolutism goes along with this view. Popcak has labled parents who are critical of 'AP' as 'lazy,' 'ideological,' and opposed to 'neuroscience.'

Beginning at page 101, Popcak tendentiously suggests a link between the practice of AP -- in this case by refusing to let an infant 'cry it out' -- and parent-teen communication. "Parents who respond quickly and consistently to their child's cries set a precedent for responding sensitively to their child's concerns, as opposed to parents who do not respond as quickly, who are more likely to send the message that they would prefer that their children figure things out for themselves."

Yet one could just as easily argue that AP's overweening excesses will set a precedent for a moral infantalism that prevents children from making independent decisions. There is much parents can learn from this book, but they should read it critically when it veers into odd discourses like the one cited immediately above.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Catholic book on sexuality that will benefit the whole family.......2006-02-02

I am a mother of 4 small boys and I ordered this book because we had heard such great reviews. It turned out to be even better than I had hoped! It is an absolute must-have for all parents! Gregory Popcak explains sexuality in light of the teachings of the Catholic Church and emphasizes that sexuality encompasses our whole being. He explains that healthy sexuality is obtainable and can be taught to our children. Now I am not afraid of all the questions that will arise, but am actually looking forward to teaching my children about their God given sexuality!

                      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!.......2004-06-23

This book is just wonderful! I am a Catholic mom of 3 small children and I'm just starting to get "those" kinds of questions from my oldest child. I had no idea how to explain all this stuff, and it was very important that my explanations also prepare my children to grow into very moral, healthy, and happy Catholic adults. I bought this book looking for help with that, and boy did I find it! I am SO glad I bought this book and I am very grateful to the author!

Popcak gives an explanation of the meaning of sexuality and marriage that will blow you away! I was literally in tears reading a couple of passages in the beginning of the book on what "healthy Catholic sexuality" really is - I knew this stuff, but he said it in a way that was so beautiful and at the same time so simple to understand. He is really gifted.

I no longer feel afraid of those "well, how does the baby get IN the mommy's tummy if the mommy doesn't have a husband?" kind of questions - I feel this book has given me all the info I need to answer these questions in a way that is sensitive, helpful to my child, and pleasing to God. I am so grateful to Gregory Popcak!

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. :)

"Wild Sex" manages to be both an extremely entertaining and a most informative pop-zoology text. Often the wild behavior of the other creatures inhabiting this planet has been completely misconstrued, and erroneously anthropomorhisied. Sexual behavior is viewed in context, starting with the question "why sex evolved". The text is enlivened is with many surprising examples of extreme behavior and bizarre adaptations, and clarified with some 40 black and white illustrations.
Rape, murder and other acts which in a human society would be classified as "crimes of passion" are not quite the rare aberrations in nature we have been lead to believe. After reading Ms Windybanks excellent book I can no longer view the duckpond in our local park in the with the equanimity I once did.
