Note: as with other reviews I've written about books authored from very personal experiences, this one should be considered unrated, as I don't assign numbers to such accounts.
The author's initial experience with death was of a double absence: she not only lost her father, but was prevented from seeing him or even speaking about her feelings to her family. If this level of silencing is somewhat unusual, bear in mind that the American phobia of death has motivated a clinical-medical bureaucracy designed to make this most final of departures clean and pretty. (In Southern California we even have Forest Lawn, a kind of Disneyland of Death, where the fast food paradigm has been applied to the managing of passed-on loved ones.) What it does instead is hold the dying at a distance while traumatizing those who survive.
Much of this book was written during the author's caretaking of her father-in-law as he lay ill, sometimes comfortable and sometimes in pain. It is not a book to entertain or philosophize, but to reveal what such an experience can be like: the details to tend, the feelings that surface, the constant struggles against laws written to protect people from getting close to death's unpleasantness. For the author, "standing the watch" was a way to deepen her connections with her patient as well as with her husband and family members. It also allowed her to deal with the unfinished pain around her previous inability to properly mourn her father.
Some among the existential philosophers have insisted that we all die alone. That is often true given the legal and medical and psychological isolation of the dying in our death-fearing culture. But what's so often taken as a normal state of the end of an existence need not be. The man tended by a woman who started life as a war orphan and the son who married her died at home in the presence of loving family members who took the time to see him off.
For him this was a great gift, and for them a reminder to seize the time while refusing to let our pioneer cult of individuality keep us from exploring those healthy interdependencies that make life worth valuing enough to end on a note of dignity.
A Lesson in Dying and Caring for the Dying.......2002-11-15
After reading Rebecca Brown's wonderful and in many ways, groundbreaking STANDING THE WATCH, I couldn't help wishing I had this book during the time my father was dying from Alzheimer's. What a comfort it would have been to read it and follow Rebecca and David Brown's thirteen-day odyssey as they lovingly care for Lincoln, David's father, during the last days of the elder's life.
There are many remarkable things about this book--one of the most obvious is the extraordinary bond between David and his father, and how the son kept his promise to care for him at home. Rebecca's solid support of her husband's decision and her unwavering devotion to her father-in-law is no less than heroic. Both are compassionate people who loved Lincoln enough to respect his wishes to keep him at home in his beloved cabin in the Seattle peninsula until he drew his last breath at age 89.
STANDING THE WATCH is not only a wise book, and a practical lesson in caring for our elderly, especially in our homes--a topic Americans avoid--but so very well written that the reader is eager to follow Rebecca wherever she takes us.
For those of us who are put into the usually overwhelming position of caring for our ill and elderly parents, STANDING THE WATCH is an invaluable book to read for its wisdom, humor, and most of all, for the guidance Rebecca and David Brown offer.

Luminous Humanity at the Nightfall of Life
As I read this moving account, I developed a deep and abiding affection for the gruff and indomitable patriarch, Lincoln Brown, as his son and daughter-in-law eased his bumpy journey into that good night. Every page is infused with a luminous humanity, and ultimately feels very necessary as it addresses an unavoidable topic that we in our comfort nevertheless evade at every opportunity. Author Rebecca Brown's vivid chronicle of her father-in-law made the Olympic Peninsula, a roisterous cast of characters and their emotions come alive. Other than publication, what more could any author want? Well done!

During a recent online search, I met Rebecca Brown, who offered me the opportunity to review Standing The Watch. I approached Standing The Watch with great interest, and was immediately drawn to this tiny family, a husband and wife, and his elderly father, sharing a piece of land with a dog who is more like a family member than a pet. This wife is Rebecca Brown, and these are her memories.
As we accompany Lincoln Brown in his journey through the Shadow of Death, his daughter-in-law shares the wisdom gained from the experience of Standing The Watch for her much loved Elder. A vivid sense of humour is evident in the liberally scattered and light-hearted ancedotes. This is surely a tribute to a tradition that is sadly lacking in much of our modern day society.
The author is as honest in her assessment of the professionals in modern society as she is fiercely tender in her regards toward her much loved Poppa, her husband David Brown, and the supportive online friends who stuck with both her and her husband through this troublesome and exhausting time.
I was able to look back upon sitting with my own elder and sharing with her this part of her journey. I was blessed to know that she left with no remorse, or regret.

Too simplistic and uses periodic inventory method........2002-01-10
I ordered this practice set to test and exercise ERP software. I wanted to enter and manipulate master inventory items, bills of material, work orders, mrp, purchase orders, sales orders, vouchers, invoices, general journals, ending up in financial statements with schedules especially for perpetual inventory. Instead, this book gives one month's worth of periodic inventory and non-inventory transactions with expected trial balance and retained earnings figures given. I'm not finding what I need out there, so I think I will just supplement this book with inventory transaction detail.

Hagan Silverplate book is complete and easy to use.......2006-03-15
I found many of the patterns I collect covered in Hagan's book. The drawings are large and easy to use to identify your pieces. I also bought Hagan's Sterling Flatware which is set up in a similar manner. You can also use both books to note which patterns you want to search for. The dates given in the books allowed me to note which patterns were contemporary with the china I collect.
I've looked at other silver identification books and I liked these best.
Great reference book.......2006-01-09
I have owned this book for at least 3 years, it is the most used book I own. If you are interested in identifying many pieces of silver plate, this is the book for you. Very easy to use. I was just on Amazon to see if there was an updated version yet, or I am trying to decide if I should buy a new one. Mine looks ragged, I have used it so much.
Helpful, but so much more is needed!.......2005-03-14
I collect silverplate - mostly flatware, and have been studying it for several years. I'm not the authority - that's why I want to learn more!
First of all, this book needs to be updated. I think that there are many more collectors today with the advent of Ebay. My favorite pattern, Rogers Exquisite 1940 is listed as "S" or seldom collected but let me tell you, it is a hot commodity on Ebay. Conversely, my aunt's pattern, Rogers Ambassador 1919, is listed as "C" or collectible but the items do not bring as high a price as my Exquisite pieces do.
The index needs to be better cross-referenced, as others have noted. Photographs instead of line drawings of the patterns would be nice. Also, a bit more on the history of silverplate and the reasons for its peaks and dips in popularity would be nice.
I use my silverplate for everyday use and put it in the diswasher every day. It still looks great. I am not looking to preserve it but to use it to make my life more beautiful and gracious. Others would be more willing to buy it and use it if they knew the truth about this marvelously inexpensive collectible. It's so easy to quickly polish it up for a special occasion (and if you use it, it never tarnishes!) and - well, I almost feel like I should write a book myself!

You do not show date of publication, but if this is the same one I bought years ago, it is very sketchy. Davis & Deibel and Teri Hagan have published far better ones for the serious collector.

I expected a lot more after referring to other customer reviews. This book is somewhat informative, but the projects depicted were not that exciting. The photos of the projects in the back of the book were nice, but no explanation given as to how they were done...only credits to the artists. I still feel I will need a more in depth, stimulating stamping book for further instructions. Overall, I would not give a recommendation.
Rubber Stamping for advanced stampers.......2002-07-23
I am not a expert stamper but have been stamping for awhile. But this book is helpful for people that have been stamping. Its like a Stampers Bible. The outline and pictures are fantastic, as well as the instructions very easy to use from the beginner to advanced. It's one of the best stamping books I have read.

I just started rubber stamping and I bought four stamping books for ideas. This was my favorite of the lot. It included several techniques I hadn't heard of before but that were easy for me, as a beginner, to recreate. The photography is beautiful and the instructions are easy to understand.
A stamping good eye-opener.......2000-08-21
Scheffler is the Matisse of the rubber stamp world. She lays out her projects clearly and with skill. Fantastic "rainy day" ideas for kids--and grandma too. If you never though stamping was for you (like me) give this book a browse and you'll want to stamp everything in sight. (I wish my cat were slower!) This book is definitive and indispensible.
Must have for beginners!.......2000-07-05
I am new to Rubber Stamping and have bought a few books - this one was by far the best for me as a beginner! It clearly lays out many techniques, gives tips and hints and shows some nice project ideas. The techniques are laid out for each project, but they are easily adapted to whatever project of your own you want to do based on that technique. Not only paper projects, there are many others as well.

My son was having a very very hard time potty training at nearly 4... I was at wits end when I bought this book.. and thank goodness I did! It gave very practical, real-life advice, and more importantly OPTIONS! This book gives several different methods and you can decide which is most appropriate for your child! I found that having my son clean up after himself (he had gotten to where he was pooping in his pull-ups and demanding to be changed immediately) and took him out of pull-ups and put him in undies all the time. We stopped giving rewards and started treating it as something totally natural as one of the methods recommends, and it worked!!! Very informative. I believe a different method will work with my younger son and plan to use a different technique in this book.
Faster isn't Necessarily Better for the Child.......2005-03-21
I ordered this book because I was told the techniques result in toilet training quickly. I was unprepared for methods which I consider primitive (i.e. giving children suppositories to loosen their stool (which my pediatrician says is invasive and unhealthy); or having young children change their own soiled sheets AND waking them every few minutes for extended periods throughout the night).
Gee whiz, I wouldn't want this done to me. It sounds a bit more like brain-washing than toilet training. Just because something works, does not make it civil. This book does not treat children with respect but rather like pets to be trained in order not to inconvenience the owners.
Helped us succeed quickly!.......2000-01-16
We found this book extremely helpful in getting our 3 and a half year old daughter to finally use the toilet for her bowel movements. After less than one week of practicing the "desensitization" method our daughter was successful. We also found the suggestions for bedwetting very informative and have relied on the appendix to further guide our research on this topic and to help us find retailers from which to purchase equipment to aid us in eliminating bedwetting. The book provides an excellent overview for different methods of toilet training and addresses age specific problems and offers age appropriate solutions.
Informative, but not very helpful........1999-09-29
The book provided some interesting information about toilet training, but none of the techniques were helpful for me. My daughter is showing signs of readiness to train, but the techniques are not for her. We can not use the "Readiness approach" because her bowel movement are not at the same time every day, she is too old for the "Early approach" though she is under 2 years old, and there is not enough information on the "Rapid approach", instead you are advised to buy another book to explain it in more detail. The first two approaches may be helpful to other parents if your child has regular bowel movements or is 3 to 15 months old.

WOW! This is a great book for those who love the Singing cowboy group "Riders in the Sky". If you have never heard of them, try their music! You won't be disappointed!
This book covers nearly EVERYTHING a first time Riders fan could need to know (although there are a few areas of interest missing from this book! Guess you can't include everything in just one volume). A great book with fantastic stories, info and pictures (althought they deleted a few pics from the pre-publication copy....I have an editor's edition and they should have left in ALL the pictures in the final run of this book).
Riders in the Sky are reminescent of Roy Rogers & Gene Autry....but with a bit of "tongue-in-cheek" humor and a bit of their own twists added in. Regulars at the Opry and with a regular tour schedule sure to be hitting a state near you! Check out www.ridersinthesky.com for more info!
