Outdated, but with a caveat.......2004-02-19

Grant's Presidency has undergone significant revisionism in the past several years. Hesseltine's book was published in 1937, when Grant's reputation was at a low ebb. In addition, Hesseltine was morbidly anti-Grant and produced a book of extraordinary one-sidedess regarding USG's time in the White House. One can only wonder why this book has been republished, considering it is grossly out of date. It is also full of condescending, insulting and inaccurate characterizations of Grant, and plodding in the extreme. It's one of the more famously badly written books on Grant and is the subject of much ridicule by those unfortunate enough to have read it.

Here's an example of Hesseltine's literary style: "Ulysses S. Grant was a loser. Even dogs didn't like him." Hello, Hesseltine: Grant won the civil war, so much for your "loser" tag.

The one bright spot is that Hesseltine does include a chapter on Grant's personality and private life. This is a surprisingly accurate and refreshing look at Grant. Hesseltine throws considerable light on Grant as a human being and the results are pleasing. This one chapter, however, does not rescue the remainder of the book. The rest of the it is snide and quite mind-numbingly boring. Avoid this tripe at all hazards.

THEY FALSELY STATE THAT THE BOOK CONTAINS "Every national note issued from 1861 to present...", the official 2006 edition only goes to notes series of 1995!!! I collect the newer series,mostly those after the 1995 series and thought this, 2006 thirty-eighth edition of the book might add adddition information...not!! My 2006 edition has a nifty New fifty note on the cover, not a twenty. Look inside the book and see if there is any information about these and you FIND NOTHING !!!!!!!!

I'm a high School teacher.I bought Michael Grater's book because it looked like even I could use it, and because it looked like I could use it for something. Just browsing it, I had to try it because all I needed was a piece of paper to start with and a pair of scissors. I couldn't stop. I brought it into a class in which we were studying Commedia dell arte. Even the more multiple-thumbed than I got started. And now with facsimile Commedia models to work from we're making/creating our own. And the kids LOVE it! I've rarely seen a more user friendly guide lead to such sophisticated porducts. It's brilliant!

A great book for kids _and_ parents.......2005-02-07

Our four year-old daughter loves this book, and so do we. The instructions are simple and easy to follow, the few supplies it calls for are really the ones you'll need, and if the masks don't look exactly like the illustrations, they look great anyway! My husband and I have had _way_ too much fun making these with our daughter.

There are *many* different animals represented, enough to keep us busy for a few years. This book is great for younger kids who love animals, as the pictures are fun to look at, even without making the masks. The book will be great, too, as they grow older and begin reading about Native American myths and legends. There are stories and descriptions attached to each animal mask. However, they are easy to pass over if the child is too young to read or if they are too "boring" for an active toddler or preschooler. I can't recommend this book enough.

Outstanding AND Easy.......1998-02-11

My 5-year old son checked this book out from our local library. My initial thought was ... oh great another craft that will take up MY time and I'll have to invest money in tons of stuff just to make one. I was wrong. The masks were simple to make, took just a few minutes and I already had everything needed to make one. My son could do the majority of the cutting AND the measuring!!! Best of all, they turned out soooooo cool that even my 9-year old made some of the masks for a cub scout project.

The Micheal Bloomfield Story.......2007-10-03

I expected this to be a good read, but this exceeded my expectations! The oral history presentation not only told about Mr. Bloomfield, but also his fellow musicians and friends. A fascinating profile with many funny and hair-raising sidelights. As a person who lived and breathed music during the 60's and 70's, I can highly recommend this to anyone interested in the genre.

A Long Time Coming - the Rise and Fall of the First American Guitar Hero.......2007-04-09

I just watched the outakes of The Complete MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL from the Criterion Collection. WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN RELEASED BEFORE?. For those who saw The Monterey Pop Festival movie in '67-'68, when it was released, it contained 90 minutes that brought not only the California Sound of the 60's, but the most innovative acts in rock, to the world. Not only was it a culutural revelation but a revolution. Even Clive Davis, the super manager who is the most powerful force in pop music to this day, says the concert changed his life (he can be seen in audience reaction shots). Well, I gotta tell you all - this movie- now with the outtakes that you can watch and hear on DVD-- I believe is just as powerful as WOODSTOCK!!! HELLO, LOU ADLER! WHY DID WE HAVE TO WAIT SO LONG?

I was kid in a rock band in the 60's playing high schools in Ohio. Sure I was influenced by the Beatles, Stones, Animals-- the British Invasion. Soon our band finally understood these bands were influenced by Elvis, Chuck Berry, and the Blues greats-- Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, etc. Realize in farm-bound Ohio, the cultural education we got was mainstream. FM rock was still in its infancy and we were slaves to AM top 40. Somehow we heard of this band from Chicago that was creating a huge scene with their high energy blues music-- the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. And that they learned and/or played with the blues greats. So Michael Bloomfield became our hero and his place on the throne was cemented with SUPER SESSION.
This fascinating book.... this incredible oral history.... from many of the artists that surrounded Bloomfield follows the rise of blues-rock and his influence on the music of the time.
Before Hendrix, Page, and Clapton, there was Michael Bloomfield and he was an insecure but incredible force who's effect on many artists is now finally being documented.
If you love the music of the 60's you must read this book. IT IS GREAT!!!. It would make a great movie. MARTY, I HOPE YOU'RE READING THIS!
So get this book then you'll understand what was going on at the Monterey Pop Festival. Cause in it is not only a fantastic performance by Paul Butterfield Blues Band but also one with Bloomfield playing with The Electric Flag plus several cutaways of Bloomfield in other parts of the film. Also, the comment from David Crosby in the film about Bloomfield is priceless.

Insightful.......2006-08-17

This book, which is a series of quotes from people that knew Mike Bloomfield and Bloomfield quotes is a terrific way to learn about the life of one of the most incredible musicians of all time. I thought I knew a bit about him (I even knew about the Macdonalds coffee machine) but I really came to understand his life. His contributions are way greater than I had imagined. His difficulties were far greater than I had imagined. A great book, a great man.

Essential for any Bloomfield fan.......2006-03-26

This is, and will probably remain, THE book on Mike Bloomfield. The only other book worth having is Ed Ward's "Rise And Fall Of An American Guitar Hero", which is out of print and very expensive in the secondary market; Ward's book also has some inaccuracies.

For many people, Mike Bloomfield is someone they know from the famed "Super Session" album from the late 1960s. Others may know him from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Few, however, realize the true breadth and depth of his recording career or his intelligence and humanity. This book goes a long way to painting a picture of who and what Mike really was.

This book is basically a long collection of quotes and remembrances of Mike by the people who were part of his life. In a loose sense of the word, it is a biography. It captures, more importantly, Mike as a person and the truly extraordinary person he was.

The CD is worth the price of the book alone, containing three solo acoustic tracks from Norman Dayron's apartment in January 1964 and four live performances from October 1964 (three electric and one piano).

Every student of the Holocaust knows the crucial importance of survivors' testimonies in reconstructing the crime. Most such accounts, however, were recorded years or even decades after the end of World War II. The survivor narratives that make up this volume, in contrast, were gathered immediately after the war. In 1946, Russian-born American psychologist David P. Boder interviewed 109 victims of Nazi persecution—the majority of them Jews—in "Displaced Persons" camps across Europe. The thirty-six accounts collected here possess an immediacy and authenticity that might otherwise be questioned in memoirs penned long after the events they detail.

These interviews encompass survivors from Poland, Lithuania, Germany, France, Slovakia, and Hungary, ranging in age from their early teens to their seventies. Their remarkable stories shed light on such controversial subjects as relations between Jews and neighbors or strangers who extended or withheld aid, opportunities for and obstacles to Jewish resistance, the victims' knowledge—or lack of knowledge—about the fate that awaited them in Nazi hands, survival strategies, women's experience of the Holocaust, the Nazi practice of placing prisoners in charge of their fellow inmates, and the liberators' postwar treatment of freed concentration camp inmates.
