Book Description
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to actually experience the hardships, trauma, excitement, tragedy, or daily adventure of a military enlisted man midst all-out warfare? The author Clayton F. Rasmussen, youngest son of a Baptist minister, optimistically takes the reader along on his personal experiences. By use of short story accounts, woven together chronologically with daily military operations, or adventurous activities, he explains the synergism of the Navy Seabee Battalion. The military campaign period of the 110th NCB is covered in this manner. Interspersed in the war activities of invasions, bombings, and strafing, were his special work projects, and thrills of exciting and unique adventures. These included exploring beautiful underwater coral gardens, being marooned on a tropical island, and even the courtship spawned by letter writing which led to his lovely Christian wife. And to expand his spiritual faith, the Navy "mistakenly" assigned him a tour on an Aircraft Carrier at war's end, to disclose a secret that only God could reveal. Events never before disclosed by a participant are revealed, as their secrecy is now uncensored, and declassifi ed, including the first nuclear events, and the author's participation. Historically accurate accounts provide the reader emotions closely resembling the personal feeling of fear, suspense, and adrenaline rush of the participant. His was the Christian's adventure of living fully every day, confident of God's Almighty safekeeping. His spiritual lessons, learned by the experiences, are showcased in each chapter heading.

Book Description
When parents feel separated from their sons by a curtain of silence or a wall of resistance, they're right to be concerned. Boys of few words--the ones who limit their expression to a timid shrug or an indifferent grunt--need our help. Whether the problem is rooted in "nature" or "nurture," boys who grow up unable to talk about their thoughts and feelings find it hard to connect with others at school, home, and eventually in business and personal relationships. Psychologist Adam Cox helps parents understand all the factors that may be limiting their son's ability or willingness to communicate--from social pressures to brain differences, from personality traits to a simple lack of vocabulary. Based on these insights, parents can choose specific strategies to help their son improve the language and social skills needed to express himself. Mothers and fathers everywhere will see their own boys in this book, and will come away prepared to help them overcome obstacles, connect with others, and succeed in school and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
Very Useful and Interesting Book on Boys' Psychology.......2007-05-13
Hooray! A smart, energetic, and insightful parenting book. (I've read too many that rely on obvious little snippets such as: "if baby is crying, try comforting him.") This book was more interesting than I expected, and not only discusses important issues but then comes through on the critical part: what to do. The author makes a strong argument for the necessity of developing social and emotional intelligence in our sons, so that they can succeed in contemporary society. According to the author, in past generations, the strong stoic type of man may have been able to remain married and find a job grounded in physical labor, but modern relationships and economies demand a higher level of interpersonal awareness and communication skills. Boys who aren't helped to develop these skills--in ways that do not diminish their sense of masculinity and accomplishment--could be risking social and academic failure. Boys of all ages are discussed, but are divided into three main groups: shy and anxious boys, angry boys, and those who have developmental problems that make communication and relating more difficult. Because the author includes information about all kinds of situations, you might want to use your book as a reference and read the chapters that relate to your own child as it is clearly organized. I read all parts as I found it fascinating and helpful for understanding my son's friends and classmates. There's a particularly good section on dealing with school issues as well.
Reading this book is like taking a course with a great teacher who makes a subject come alive. Many case studies illustrate the author's points, and while there is a lot of depth to the ideas discussed, it's a very personable, approachable read. If you want a new perspective on why your son acts and reacts as he does, as well as practical ways to handle more challenging "boy" moments, read this and be inspired. As Cox says in the epilogue, "raising emotionally healthy boys is not a task for the timid or weak of spirit--it is a job for visionaries, parents who can see the men their sons will become. Parenting our children requires all the energy we can summon. It requires us to keep our wits, look with insight, and forgive ourselves when we make mistakes. It is both a job and a passion. And nothing we will ever do will be as important." Highly recommended.
Great book for parents/those caring for boys, especially w/ LD/ADHD.......2006-04-23
I highly recommend this book for all parents or caregivers of boys, but especially if you have a boy with learning or attention problems (ADHD). This book not only gives very practical, realistic advice about how to understand your son if he is shy or withdrawn, but also provides great insight into why he may be reluctant to talk and how to bring him out. For many kids with learning disabilities and ADHD, the academic aspect gets focussed on but there can also be social problems at school and in the family. This book addresses both school and family issues, but we found the psychological insights to be extremely helpful in understanding why a fifth-grade boy would be having more trouble in school at this age, and also why he would talk about hobbies and technical things but couldn't tell us why he was getting upset. This book has also helped us understand an older teenager--and know when to step in and when it was fine to give him more space. When communication improves, behavior and respect tend to improve also. We've read some other "self-help" books but this was the first one that seemed to cover all our areas of concern. It's not filled with technical language but it was a "smarter" book than most we've read. Dr. Cox obviously knows about boys and understands what the day to day reality of most families is like. Despite the title, which might imply it's only for "quiet boys," it should be required reading for every parent of boys! We wish we had read this book sooner.
My Son.......2006-03-24
My son age 7 years has difficulty recognising emotions. As a preschooler he was treated for a Specific Language Impairment(comprehension difficulties/language processing difficulties). His speech and language is now age appropriate.I asked the Speech Therapist for ideas to help his emotional understanding. She said I would have to ask the "Autism Professionals" even though my son does not have Autism!
I felt frustrated and misunderstood until I discovered this book. The author knows exactly where my son is coming from.At last I have found validation and help. This book is very readable. You can dip into it as it has an index or else read it chapter by chapter. The author also has an informative web-site.I would highly recommend this book.I only wish that the Professionals involved with my son knew what Dr Adam Cox(author) knows and understands!
Great book for parents of boys.......2006-01-20
I loved this book! It was a great tool to remind me to slow down, talk, and communicate with my two sons. Dr. Cox has a wonderful way to meld real-life examples with his parenting suggestions and I've been able to apply these lessons at home. The author's writing style is friendly & accessible which made it a joy to read. Highly recommended.

In the newly updated, revised and retitled The Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink , author John F. Mariani greatly expands upon his 1983 classic.
Customer Reviews:
Soup to nuts!.......2005-03-01
John Mariani's comprehensive work includes many recipes, from the simplest to those involving many steps and considerable cooking experience and skill, from Colonial foods to present day dishes. I found this book fascinating, sat down and read it cover to cover, and rose up eager to try some of the recipes.
There were dozens of varieties of fish listed, including many I have never cooked or eaten. There were colorful colloquialisms, some of which would be familiar to modern readers, others from long-ago times.
A great general interest book, Mariani's work especially appeals to "foodies" ( one of the contemporary terms he defines). Readers will gain an appreciation for the bounty of the 21st century American table as well as an understanding of how our foremothers creatively improvised with basic ingredients like cornmeal and molasses.
This book is highly recommended as a page-turning overview of the surprising sophistication and palate-pleasing delights of American cuisine!

A wonderful way to spend the winter.......2000-10-11
What do gardners do when they can't dig in the dirt? Well, reading about digging in the dirt is a fine alternative and Jan Dean has gathered an astonishing assortment of reading material for anyone who loves gardens. The Gardener's Reading Guide is an annotated bibliography that covers a wide range of books, including novels, that have a gardening theme. I highly recommend it to anyone who is putting together their own library of gardening books. It will simplify the hunt for the best books around. In fact, this book is a lovely resource for gardenlovers (like me) who don't garden, but think of this as a spectator sport.

Only in this generation had Albert and his family been Mennonites. Sometimes they struggled with the tenets of this new faith, far more restrictive than the Lutheranism of their early years. Along with the stresses of adhering to this new way of life, one that effectively cut them off from communication even with close relatives who lived nearby, was the added struggle of living through the years of the Dustbowl, when for all who lived on farms through those times, the
Customer Reviews:
I couldn't put it down!.......2005-09-06
This extremely well-written book has a calm pace, which nevertheless impels the reader forward -- I found myself caring deeply about the characters. The descriptions of the everyday life in the author's family and extended family were fascinating. I have to say that the book often made me hungry, because the author described the simple, delicious meals so that I could almost taste them! This book depicts a simple, yet deep experience of growing up in a very different time and place. I highly recommend it!
A great read for a rainy afternoon.......2005-08-18
This is a moving story of a little girl in a sheltered and loving family growing up in a time and place far removed from our present day lives. I found it to be immediately engaging. The author has managed to give us a clear picture of a strict, religious lifestyle during a fascinating period of our history in a style that is both compelling and educational. I have recommended it to many of my friends and give it a whole-hearted 5 stars for anyone who loves to read quality literature.
The Meadowlark's Song.......2005-08-11
The Meadowlark's song by Phyllis Dirks is very well written and the author has proven to be a great storyteller. Although the book is about everyday Mennonite farm life in North Dakota in the 1930's it still alway has an air of mystery about it; what is going to happen next. This keeps the reader alway anxious to read on and see how it all turns out. I hope the author will write a sequel to tell us about her life in Idaho that follows her leaving North Dakota. She has left us all in suspense and ready to read on.
A touching tale.......2005-08-10
For a grown man it's almost embarrasing to admit it, but I sometimes had a hard time holding back the tears while reading this book. A very touching tale indeed.
This is the story about a girl born in a time very different from now. The family lived a life with much struggle and hardship, but they also seemed able to enjoy the good things in life with more sincerity than most people nowadays.
A recommendable book, and a good reminder of what really matters in life.

Excellent combination of economics and environmentalism!.......1999-03-01
Jim Eggert weaves a simple yet compelling story of why we should highly value our environment in determining the economic well-being of our society. He highlights how the GDP (gross domestic product) does not account for the value of the wonderful song of the meadowlark when a change in farm crop harvesting (which does positively increase our GDP) wipes out the meadowlarks brooding habitat. This example, along with many other delightful essays, make this book a fantastic read.

Product Description
The poems of "Songs of the Meadowlark" are from the heart. Related primarily to my early history on the South Dakota prairie in the 1940's and 50's, they are intended to give the reader a new and deeper insight into the true flavor of farm and ranch life on the high plains during that eraoriginal pictures are included in this edition. For those of you whose growing years can also be traced to that distinctive time and place, many of these poems will prompt you to recall special memories of your own. I believe there is value in doing so. All too often, it seems to me, we become so caught up in the day-to-day activities of our lives that we are inclined to neglect our heritage; yet our roots are destined to remain an important part of who we are. In my own case, upon reflection I often see my father or my uncle or others significant to my early value programming in the attitudes and behaviors that I model; and I am thankful for their tutelage. It is my intention, therefore, that these poems bring to mind the simple pleasures of life on the farm in bygone days: independence, imagination, harmony with nature and lack of pretense.

Book Description
The New York Times called Stephen Sondheim "the greatest and perhaps best known artist in the American musical theater," while two months earlier, the same paper referred to his contemporary, Andrew Lloyd-Webber as "the most commercially successful composer in history." Whatever their individual achievements might be, it is agreed by most critics that these two colossi have dominated world musical theater for the last quarter century and hold the key to the direction the musical stage will take in the future. Here in the third volume of Stephen Citron's distinguished series The Great Songwriters--in depth studies that illuminated the musical contributions, careers, and lives of Noel Coward and Cole Porter (Noel and Cole: The Sophisticates), and Oscar Hammerstein 2nd and Alan Jay Lerner, (The Wordsmiths)--this eminent musicologist has taken on our two leading contemporary contributors to the lyric stage. His aim has not been to compare or judge one's merits over the other, but to make the reader discover through their works and those of their contemporaries, the changes and path of that glorious artform we call Musical Theater. In his quest, Citron offers unique insight into each artist's working methods, analyzing their scores--including their early works and works-in-progress. As in Citron's previously critically acclaimed books in this series, great significance is given to the impact their youthful training and private lives have had upon their amazing creative output. Beginning with Sondheim's lyrics-only works, West Side Story, Gypsy, Do I Hear A Waltz? through his scores for Saturday Night, Company, Anyone Can Whistle, Follies, Pacific Overtures, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday In the Park, Into the Woods, Assassins, and Passion, all these milestones of musical theater have been explored. Lloyd-Webber's musical contribution from his early works, The Likes of Us and Joseph to Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, Starlight Express, Aspects of Love, By Jeeves, The Phantom of the Opera, Song and Dance, Mass, Sunset Boulevard to Whistle Down the Wind are also thoroughly analyzed. The works of these two splendid artists are clarified for the casual or professional reader in context with their contemporaries. Complete with a quadruple chronology (Sondheim, Lloyd-Webber, US Theater, British Theater), copious quotations from their works, and many never before published illustrations, the future of the artform that is the crowning achievement of the 20th century is made eminently clear in this book. Sondheim and Lloyd-Webber is a must-read for anyone interested in the contemporary theater.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2006-03-17
The book helped me greatly with a paper I had to write. Very interesting insight into the two great's minds!
A must have for any fan.......2005-08-12
I found the book fascinating, as it is filled with interesting details and tidbits about these two men and their shows. It is especially useful because it focuses on the music, often showing musical examples and shedding light on things like melodic teeming and form. The other two reviews stated that Lloyd Webber's name was misspelled. Apparently, they didn't read carefully enough because it explains the reasoning for this deliberate decision is because when Lloyd Webber was knighted he chose to hyphenate his name. The book tends to favor Sondheim, but is full of interesting information about both of them and each of their shows. I can't promise that is 100% free of factual errors, but it is still a must have for anyone looking for in-depth information on these two great men.
Terrible and embarrassing.......2001-11-14
What a terrible book this is. As with Citron's other books, this is LOADED with factual errors and misunderstandings of the shows he discusses. The first big clue is that he misspells Andrew Lloyd Webber's name throughout the entire book -- where were his editors? And he says that the period between the 1920s and 1960s was "a time when plot was secondary" in musicals. Oh really? Like in Carousel, West Side Story, Show Boat, Pal Joey, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Camelot, Gypsy, The King and I...? I feel sorry for anyone who wastes their money on this the way I did. Stay away from books by this guy -- there are so many GOOD books on muiscal theatre out there...
Irresponsible Research.......2001-09-17
Citron's book is an embarrassment to any serious student of musical theater. Many of Citron's facts are erroneous (beginning with Lloyd Webber's last name which is NOT hyphenated, but appears hyphenated in every instance throughout this book). His approach to this material is very condescending. For example, he implies that A Little Night Music and Passion only won Tony Awards because there were no other decent shows that opened those years, thereby dismissing other good shows and offering backhanded compliments to Sondheim. Rumors are that the Really Useful Group is extremely embarrassed by the Lloyd Webber sections. Wait for the forthcoming Yale series on Broadway composers.
Book Description
Through compelling personal accounts and family correspondence, One Step Ahead documents Alfred Feldman’s harrowing flight into exile as he and his family fled the pogroms that flooded across Nazi-occupied Europe. It is a memoir of horror and hope recounted by a man who survived the organized terror of Hitler’s "Final Solution" as it destroyed entire generations of European Jewish life within ten catastrophic years in the mid-twentieth century. Feldman’s memoir conveys the searing pain that has never left him, while demonstrating the triumphant humanity of a survivor.
Feldman vividly describes the impact of the escalating anti-Semitic hatred and violence in Germany during the 1930s, the impact of the notorious Nuremberg Laws in 1935, and the terrifying Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. By age sixteen, Feldman was living with his parents and three younger sisters in Antwerp, Belgium, during the 1939 German invasions of Poland, marking the start of World War II. In the face of increasing persecution, Feldman’s extended family scattered over the globe in a desperate attempt to remain one step ahead of their Nazi pursuers.
Recalling his life on the run, Feldman describes what few survivors have chosen to write about: the Vichy raids of August 26, 1942; the French labor brigades; the Comité Dubouchage; and life in super-vised residence in France under the Italians. While in the south of France, Feldman endured food shortages and Nazi anti-Semitic measures, beginning with work camps and culminating in the deportation and ultimate death of his mother and sisters at Auschwitz.
To evade the Germans, Feldman and his father fled into the Italian Alps in September of 1943, hiding between the Allies and the Germans. Aided by local villagers, the Feldmans survived precariously for over a year and a half, along with other Jewish refugees, until that region was liberated. Only then, and only gradually, did Feldman manage to piece together the fate of his surviving family and learn at last of the death of his mother and sisters.
Now, as an adult, Alfred Feldman has retraced his escape and exile, taking his wife and children to his hometown in Germany, the mountains in Italy, and Montagnac, where a plaque commemorates his mother and sisters.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating, and surprised this is the first review.......2005-11-17
I came across this escape memoir in researching my own family's escape from Antwerp during the invasion of May 1940. This is a well written, meticulous and gripping account of a 5 year odyssey through France and Italy during the war, including an account of pre-war life in Germany and Belgium. In addition to the usual depressing experiences, the writer recounts the numerous, often poor, rural (Christian) families he encountered who were incredibly helpful and generous, as well as Italian priests who aided the refugees and funneled desparately needed funds during the prolonged hiding. The author adds to his vivid, detailed first hand accounts some admirable fact and date checking, as well as references, often missing from such memoirs. A wonderful and well done book, deserving of more comment and sales than it has apparently achieved.
