Book Description
United States senator "Young Bob" La Follette entered politics as a young reformer in the shadow of his legendary father, "Fighting Bob" La Follette. He made his own mark as a key architect of Roosevelt's New Deal and as a champion of labor rights and civil liberties. But in 1946 he was unexpectedly unseated by Joseph McCarthy, whose rise to Cold War notoriety foreshadowed La Follette's despair and suicide in 1953. This new edition updates the only full scale biography of La Follette,Jr., the first to exploit his voluminous collection of personal papers. Patrick J. Maney makes clear that Young Bob's story is as relevant today as it was when he died fifty years ago. His life stands as dramatic evidence of how one of the most respected politicians of his time bridged the political spectrum and was admired by both liberals like FDR and Harry Truman and conservatives like Robert Taft and Richard Nixon.

Oh, hoorah........2005-05-20
Another installment of Fysche's masturbatory "prose". Relying yet again on elementary netspeak to make her quoting, namedropping, and generally unimaginitive life in LA seem deeply meaningful, Fysche succeeds only in seducing the lazy, the anti-intellectual, and the untalented.
Fysche's World.......2004-04-17
I Fysche II Fysche tells the story of a young girl finding herself. She travels all over Europe and the US gathering life long experiences. The book is packed with relationships, parties, sex, drugs, politics, astrology, and just about everything else. Never a dull moment in a book written by Fysche. She was able to document her life while living on a rather small budget. I commend her for this.
Her writing style is a little tough to get use to, but once you do, it is quit enjoyable.
Very interesting reading.
Cult literature for the gilted generation.......2004-04-14
I Fysche II Fysche documents the story of a highly successful Hollywood rich kid who wakes up one morning realizing that her life is lacking sustenance, and sets off on a vision quest lasting several years, taking her half way round the world and back again. Bouncing between relationships and parties spanning three continents, I Fysche II Fysche takes you on a rollercoaster ride packed with sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, poetry, philosophy, and a smattering of theology. Whatever you look for in a novel, I Fysche II Fysche has it all in abundance.
Her distinctive writing style "Fyschese", similar to the mobile phone generation's abbreviated "text speak" has earned both acclaim from literary academics and scorn from critics. A playful use of abbreviations and alphanumeric typography, "Fyschese" makes the reader pay attention. Fysche claims that reading her novels helps to balance the brains left and right hemispheres, and develops peripheral vision. Whilst this may sound far out, she may have a point. Whilst reading I Fysche II Fysche, I did find my focus and awareness of my surroundings to be quite different to reading `another' book.
Not quite a sequel..........2003-05-23
...more like a constant albeit glorious work in progress. "I-II-Raw-Gold" details the continuing adventures and mis-adventures of Fysche, the knockout erotic dancer on a printed page, living her fiction in four volumes taking place after her Euro-trek in "Tails." "I-II-Raw-Gold" is "Tails" with the volume turned all the way up and makes for a mind-blender of a read. Highly recommended, even if you haven't already read the first installment. Kerouac in latex, five stars.
FYSCHE IS GOLD.......2003-05-21
"I Fysche, II Fysche, Raw Fysche, Gold Fysche" is a book that is filled with the adventures of Fysche. Open the book and understand the language of Fyschese. The author has a unique way of writing that pops right out of the page! Join Fysche in Amsterdam, LA, Chicago, Vegas, and NYC!! There is never a dull moment. What a FUN read!!

Book Description
Development Macroeconomics was hailed on its publication in 1996 for providing a clear, rigorous, and long-needed synthesis of recent work in the field. This revised edition brings that achievement up to date. Addressing an audience of policy-oriented economists and theorists, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates, Pierre-Richard Agénor and Peter Montiel review and assess the burgeoning research done in the past two decades, paying special attention in this new edition to issues that have recently gained in importance among developing countries, such as the interaction between macroeconomic policies and long-term growth, the political economy of macroeconomic reform, the management of capital inflows, and currency crises.
As Agénor and Montiel show, development macroeconomics has become a vital subdiscipline of macroeconomics. In the past, general macroeconomic perspectives on developing countries were divided into the ideologically charged categories of "monetarist" or "structuralist," but a vast literature has since developed that treats the problems of developing countries with the analytical tools of modern macroeconomics. The authors' coherent and rigorous treatment presents this new analysis and empirical work in an unusually lucid and unified way. It includes extensive empirical material describing the characteristics of the developing-country macroeconomic context. It explores how the analytical tools of modern macroeconomics can be adapted to accommodate such characteristics, and it uses the resulting models to analyze a diverse set of macroeconomic issues that developing countries have confronted in recent years. This is a crucial book for anyone wishing to understand this rapidly changing field.
Customer Reviews:
quite good!!!.......2004-12-27
This is a very original work on the macroeconomics of emerging markets. It is very useful if you are interested in working in the field of international finance and macroeconomics. It deals in a formal manner with financial and real problems the less developed nations have to cope with. This is its best characteristic. For you to grasp the whole content, your math and economic theory background must be solid. A senior undergraduate with good skills should be capable of understanding this wonderful book. I think a new edition is on the go.
If you find yourself curious about this topic, in adittion of Foundations of International Macroeconomics by Obtsfeld and Rogoff, be aware that prof. Carlos Vegh, the superb UCLA and IMF economist, is in the process of writing a graduate text on Open Economy Macroeconomics in Developing Countries (actually this is its name) http://www.econ.ucla.edu/cvegh/book/book.htm
An illuminating offer for macroeconomics scholars.......1998-12-13
This book by Agenor and Montiel has succeeded to a large extent in their objective of integrating macroeconomic theory with the issues of the less developed countries. Proves to be an useful book which could be a decent alternative to the various textbooks in macroeconomics which are divorced of the diverse features of the less developed countries. Indeed an asset for the subject and the researchers. Worth possessing. But the cost is a little bit unaffordable for those in the developing world

In recent years, the five Andean economies have adapted a variety of exchange-rate regimes. This paper is concerned with drawing lessons from their experience, which appears to support the view that the most convenient exchange-rate regimes are those that afford policymakers sufficient freedom of maneuver to adjust their policies in response to evolving emphases on stability and growth objectives.

Book Description
This research produced evidence about the contribution of investment and other sources to the growth process of Latin America during 1960-2002. Alternative growth accounting methodologies were used to measure the contributions of the sources of growth to GDP growth during 1960-2002. The study also provides evidence of the effects of investments in machinery and equipment and construction structures, and the effects of private and public investment on per capita GDP growth.

Customer Reviews:
I believe I was ripped off by a dealer listed in this book........2006-03-03
This book promotes itself as a source for "honest" dealers and buyers for your antiques and collectibles.
I sent 2 pieces of glass to one of their "honest" dealers, who had me send them insured for $800 and $500 respectively.
Since then that "honest" dealer has disappeared along with my glass. Disconnected phones and so on.
In a call to the author in California, to see if he knew where the dealer had gone, since he had recommended the dealer in his book, I was welcomed with an attitude of no desire to even talk to me, let alone to be of any assistance.
I wish I had never seen this book.
A Best Buy.......2002-11-10
If your going to have a yard sale or throw something away, wait till you read this book. I use the book and found thing's worth some real money, that I thought was trash.. So do your self a favor and buy the book. It's worth the money
Excellent Resource for working through an estate.......2001-06-16
I found the book in the library and when I found I'd bookmarked 40 or so pages, I decided to buy myself a copy (used, for half price). Good advice for working through an estate, which is what I'm dealing with--what to sell to collectors and what should go through a yard sale. Collectors have been very nice to work with, if they won't buy my item they will recommend somewhere else. My first item to sell was a musical instrument; the collector gave me $50 more than the highest bid at a local music store. The book has been very reassuring to both my mother and me to know what's junk and what is worth 10 or 20 times more than we'd expect from a yard sale, or at least double what we've seen on ebay. For the most part, not for newer collectibles (past 1970s), but book has an extensive section listing collectors of fast food, pop culture, and similar items which may only be 10 or 15 years old. Look for an older edition at the library to check the format; I've found this to be an invaluable resource, and several friends have purchased copies of this book as they watch me go through the "old junk" in the house. We all use it so much that we simply refer to it as, "the book".

--------------------------------------------------
I bought this book because I have a lot of 1980s and 1990s action figures, comic books, magazines, trading cards, and the such. I was hoping to finally find someone to sell them to. Well, I contacted some people listed in the book, and ... I've still got the stuff. If you have something made before 1970, this book may be of use to you. But if your stuff was made after 1970, don't waste your money on this UNCOMPREHENSIVE book. Hey, Tony Hyman, how about writing/compiling a separate volume covering items made after 1970?
Trash or Treasure Guide of Buyers by Tony Hyman.......2000-05-17
All in all it is a good book and covers a good variety of things that you might normally not think to keep. Know it's hard to cover everything in just one book but I was disappointed that several of the current collectibles weren't covered (or I couldn't locate them) in this book. You almost have to read or scan through the whole book because some items that weren't listed in the index are referred to under other parts of the book. Takes a bit of time to read through but very informative.

Book Description
Over 1,200 babies are born every day to women between the ages of 35 and 44, challenging the old attitudes about pregnancy and age. This helpful, informative book-given the stamp of authority of more than a half dozen medical professionals-reassures women nearing 30 and older that they are neither too old nor too high-risk to have a healthy baby.
The Complete Guide to Pregnancy After 30 covers the entire range of concerns about pregnancy and birth for the mature mother-to-be, from conception through the first months of motherhood. Most important, the book includes the latest medical information to answer a woman's most pressing questions, help her achieve a healthy pregnancy and birth, and realistically plan future pregnancies.
By weaving up-to-date medical research with the real-life stories of mothers, doctors, and midwives, this painstakingly researched guide brings a deeper understanding of the joys, myths, and realities of pregnancy during this special time.
Customer Reviews:
Great prep for choosing care providers (hospital & doctor).......2006-08-02
I really appreciated the information in this book. 659 pages before the extensive bibliography, but very large type. I actually found it a reasonably quick read.
I agree with criticism that this book might be more appropriately titled with a different bottom age. Perhaps 35?
The author does engage in a lot of encouraging the older woman considering childbearing. I can see where this is seen as combating discouraging outlooks towards older pregnancies. But the author, both the daughter of an older mother and an older mother herself admits her own bias, and I don't it inappropriate to express a view.
This was an excellent preparation for tasks I am preparing to undertake: shopping for hospitals (I live in a large metro area with many choices available to me) and interviewing potential doctors (not happy w/my current ob/gyn I have gotten referrals from family, friends, coworkers, but needed to know how to choose between them. Having had some bad experiences, I am very particular about my health care providers, and am hoping to find an ob/gyn I like as much as my primary care physician.
Having no first or even second-hand experience with childbirth, I was grateful to find in one place information on fertility, female reproductive details and idiosyncrasies, risks to mother and child, multiples, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, placenta previa, placental abruption, labor, birth, epiosotomies, forceps, C-sections, epidurals, pitocin, inducing labor, big babies, breech babies, etc. etc. etc. Winkelman discusses what things are, why or to whom they may happen, what your options are, different doctor and hospital philosophies toward them. She includes lots of information on alternatives such as midwives, doulas, birth centers and home births. For what it is I found it very comprehensive and I consider it indispensible to my search for the best doctor for me. I now feel I can ask questions of a potential doctor and have some background with which to enable me to understand the answers.
What this book touches on but does not discuss in great detail is what an older woman can do to improve the state of her health prior to pregnancy with the intention of a healthier result for mother and child, such things as nutrition and exercise. But there are many other fine books that cover these topics in great detail, and I am glad Winkelman covers what she does so thoroughly.
Personally, I highly recommend it.
An Essential Guide.......2005-03-02
Ms Winkelman is a respected medical writer who gives a wide range of workshops at federal agencies, universities and hospitals. Her book is an important addition to the growing literature on later life pregnancy. It is extremely well written and provides a very clear discussion of a broad range of sometimes arcane topics ranging from tests to screen for fetal abnormalities to the studies evaluating the cancer risks posed by taking fertility drugs. The book is remarkable for a balanced view of the risks and opportunities presented by motherhood in later life. I would recommend it to anyone contemplating becoming a parent in the older age group.
Welcome clarity in the fog of dogma.......2004-07-16
This book was an incredible help to my wife and I from the trying times trying to get pregnant to after our delivery.
We learned about this book by happening upon Ms. Winkelman doing a book signing at a local bookstore. Having just began to consider trying to get pregnant, we stopped and listened (we were both in our late 30s at the time). Having encountered a bewildering array of information about our chances of conceiving, we were apprehensive. "The Complete Guide" eased our minds with it's straightforward, reasonable attitude. We finally conceived naturally, and while it would be a stretch to credit this book with our success, I can say that it was one of the things that helped releive our stress. I strongly believe that reducing stress helped us finally conceive.
After successfully getting pregnant (after more than a year of trying), we were once again confronted with a dizzying constellation of advice, most of which coming with an agenda. Most other books we encountered along the way were pushing dogma and backing it up with pseudo-science, leaving us confused and worried. This book became a trusted source of solid information, not advocating a particular agenda. While I belive that there is a place for authors to advocate such things as natural childbirth, stay-at-home mothers, extreme dietary restrictions, and the like, I resented the sources of information that attempted to convince us that deviating from a narrowly defined code of pre-natal behavior was tantamount to child abuse. One VERY popular book even suggested that my pregnant wife should avoid sitting in rush hour traffic! (and that was not nearly the most extreme example). Maybe some authors have the luxury to stay at home in their sanitary bubble for nine months, but we certainly didn't. I felt that other authors disguise their lack of respect for women by talk to them as if they are their 'girlfriends', instead of a trained expert in their field. Winkelman's training as a respected science writer shows in her book's willingness to convey knowledge in a respectful and unpatronizing way. Her book also showed respect for a diversity of lifestyle choices, and the medical and scientific information included informed and calmed us.
The result: A baby boy(!), eight and a half pounds, delivered with some nature and some drugs, with extremely happy and proud Forty-year-old parents. Mother and son are calm, happy, and healthy, and doing very well.
Thanks, Carol, for a great resource. I recommend it in the highest possible terms.
Much more than 'a girlfriend's guide'.......2004-03-25
This is a great book for women who want the facts with the occasional anecdote from peers. It has replaced all the other books I was given as gifts - books full of anecdotal advice with few facts and provincial views of women that discourage work and travel. As a woman having her first child at 40, I found it comforting to have such up-to-date research at my fingertips (countering out-dated advice from friends and family).
For example, being a vegetarian and traveling in Europe a lot I was concerned about Listeria and my own OB-GYN could not offer a complete list of cheeses to avoid. This book filled the gap. If you're looking for a companion to this book which offers a similarly inspiring and factual account of how your body and baby will change as the pregnancy develops month-to-month, I'd recommend Christopher Vaugh's `How Life Begins'.
Not that helpful.......2003-02-02
This book spends a LOT of time combating the idea that women over 30 are more at risk or will have a more problematic pregnancy. Quote after quote from doctors and mothers bemoan this fact. I understand why this needs to be said, but in this book, it gets repetitive. The book reads like a long, well-researched feature article dispelling the myths of "older mothers," rather than a guide, perhaps because the author is not a physician herself.
There is very little of the "leading you through" week by week or even month by month kind of advice you would expect from a book called "The COMPLETE Guide to Pregnancy."
The other thing I didn't like was the attitude that older women were practically all career-obsessed. One woman relates how she started going into labor during a "very important" business meeting that lasted several hours. She said she just dug her fingers into the table and didn't tell anyone what was going on. Her cervix was majorly dilated and then only when the meeting was over did she go to the hospital. And the book, instead of saying that this was kind of crazy and possibly dangerous behavior, put it up as an example of how women can be strong! Once I read that, I lost faith in this book.
The one good thing I can point out about this book (and the reason I bought it to begin with) is that it is one of the few books that has significant space devoted to what to do BEFORE you're pregnant. (Ann Douglas's Mother of All Pregnancy Books being the other). So many books on pregnancy start out with "So your test is positive!" This book discusses fertility and other issues such as how to prepare yourself with diet, etc.

Lillian Roxon is the undisputed godmother of rock journalism. Audacious, independent and fiercely intelligent, she cut her teeth as a reporter in the lively world of 1950's Sydney tabloid journalism. She moved to New York in the 1960s just in time for the cultural revolution celebrating fresh attitudes to sexual freedom, women's liberation - and, of course, rock music. At Max's Kansas City in New York, she became the center of a crowd including Lou Reed, Jim Morrison and Andy Warhol. Linda McCartney confided in her about her first date with Paul, and Germaine Greer knocked on her door for a place to stay. Lillian's Rock Encyclopedia was the first book of its kind and established her as one of America's leading chroniclers of rock culture. Twenty-five years after her tragic death, she was termed the Mother of Rock, but was more than this. Smart, cheeky, vibrant and idealistic, of her times, she was a trailblazer and an inspiration -- a woman who encouraged others to follow the new paths she opened up

From Oz She Came.......2006-03-13
Robert Milliken has written a fine biography of the pioneering journalist Lillian Roxon, author of ROCK ENCYCLOPEDA (1969). On one hand anyone would feel sorry for Roxon, who died alone in a crumby New York apartment surrounded by giant cockroaches, and so young, only 41, and she died of asthma which thank God very few people die of. One has the feeling that if only she felt able to share her life with someone she might have lived; as Milliken hints there are some unanswered questions about her death.
However on the whole the book is a colonnade of sustained joy, for Roxon's life was an extraordinary one and she seems on every turn to have found the most fun available. Plus she lived during a great period in Australian history, finding herself at a very young age (as a schoolgirl) part of Brisbane's chic, avant-garde "Pink Elephant" crowd, a young girl in a wild scene of poetry, homosexuality and small, intensive galleries and late night cafes and bars. She never looked back, becoming a top journalist in Sydney where she worked for the city's top paper, the Morning Herald, where eventually the corporation sent her to New York City. In 1960, just in time for Camelot and the Kennedys and the beginning of the Twist and Nureyev and Fonteyn and, finally, the scene where she found her niche, the rock/art back room at Max's Kansas City. Nearly everyone loved her, for she was not only beautiful and brainy but she had a shrewd, native generosity, and helped out her fellow writers wherever she could. She befriended Linda Eastman, who broke her heart by ignoring her after her marriage to Paul McCartney was brokeraged. And she encountered another Australian wild woman, the provovateuse Germaine Greer, who wrote THE FEMALE EUNUCH in 1971, dedicating it to Lillian as most of us have forgotten by now. All these tangled stories and scenes Milliken lays out like the pro he is, and yet never losing sight of his main thread, the way Roxon took to innovation and the experimental like a dog to water.
As a bonus, Milliken included a shrewd selection of some of the highlights of Roxon's famous ENCYCLOPEDIA, now apparently sadly out of print, as well as some pertient and previously uncollected articles that were published before her death. This small anthology of Roxon's work makes us long for an edition of her critical slash gossip writing in toto.

Book Description
When he was just 13 years old, a young Russian immigrant named Izzy Baline left his New York City home and had to support himself. It was a struggle for several years, as he sang for pennies and often slept in flophouses or on park benches.
Soon after changing his name to Irving Berlin and writing a series of hit songs, he became rich beyond his wildest imagination. For several decades, he was the most successful composer of American pop music. He wrote "White Christmas," which broke sales records for years. Starting in the mid-1950s with the rise of Elvis Presley and rock and roll music, Berlin eventually lost nearly all of his popularity.
Yet in the aftermath of the horrible events of September 11, 2001, the citizens of this nation needed a certain type of music to remind them what a great country this is. Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" supplied that need.
