Book Description
Grigor McClelland served as a Quaker relief worker in British-occupied Germany between May 1945 and June 1946, working first for "Displaced Persons" who had been brought to work in Germany during the war and stranded there. These were mainly Russians and Poles, but also people from most of the other countries of Europe, often perplexed as to whether they could or should return home. From December 1945 McClelland and his team transferred to work on the problems of the German population in part of the Ruhr. They distributed food and other supplies, helped German welfare and youth organizations to start again, and liaised closely with the British Military Government and with the new civilian administration, working cheek by jowl with the Swedish and Swiss agencies.
The team had entered Germany whilst General Montgomery's "non-fraternization" order was in force, but soon their lives mingled with those of Germans, they sat up late at night with them, discussing religion, politics, literature and art, and developed some lasting friendships.
McClelland met many survivors of Nazi concentration camps and visited two camps run by the British for Nazis and suspected Nazis. He heard Pastor Martin Niemoeller talk about the Guilt Question to a hostile audience of Westphalian pastors, and visited the War Crimes Trial at Nuremberg. He and his fellow workers were addressed by General Montgomery, and met the saintly pacifist, Pastor Wilhelm Mensching, and his congregation.
The letters in this book, which were written by McClelland during those 13 months in Germany, provide a day-by-day account of the relief team's life and work, the conditions they tackled and the people they met.

Kovel's like Martha are over rated. They can't know all. I recommend the Antique Trader 2004 Price Guide. The Antique Trader authors go to the expert for the information and give them credit.
A useful book........2002-10-16
This, like lots of antique price lists, can make anyone a little nuts to use. As has been noted by others, 80% of the time what you want will not be in the book and then if it is, chances are that your items condition will be different that the one the book lists a price for. That said, these books can be helpful as a reference and give you kind of a "good idea" what different types of items go for. This book, like most general antique price lists is a little weak in the area of antique tools (one of my areas of interst) but this should not be much of a problem for most. Kovels' book is as good as any of the general interest price lists out there and worth having around.

...it's also difficult to find your way around.
This book basically consists of a long list of "antiques", (including all possible kinds of 50's colletibles) sorted by type. The good thing about this book is, that the prices quoted are actual realized sales, i.e. there are no estimates and guestimates in this book.
The bad thing is, that whatever you're looking for will almost certainly not be in this book. And if it is, you will not be able to find it, unless you already know the book/the market very well.
Why? Well, there is, of course, an infinite amount of "stuff" out there. Even Kovel's 900 pages cannot cover it all. That would be less important, if the book a) limited its scope a bit e.g covering only "real" antiques OR "real" collectibles and b) showed us how to determine the value of something not in the book(e.g. if "your" chair is made out of a different kind of wood from the type described in the book, how does that influence the price?).
Instead, the problem (of looking up a certain kind of antique) actually is aggravated by the fact that the organization of items is not very clear. Example: if you're looking for the price of a Meissen Porcelaine Figurine, you may have to look under all three categories (Meissen, Porcelaine and Figurines). That of course being subject to you knowing that there is a separate "Meissen" category and not looking up "porcelaine" only. Forget the index, it rarely helps.
In my opinion, this book can be useful only for people that are willing to put a lot of time into the subject, learning the organization of the book by heart and visiting a lot of auctions / flea markets in order to develop a feeling for the factors influencing prices. A beginning collector is likely to be frustrated by this book.

I found this book to be too superficial for my needs. I do not regret its purchase because to learn it was not going to give me info I needed was also important. I will pass it on to someone else.

I very much wanted to like this book. But... while there is good material herein, it is sporadic and buried. I find the book ultimately hard to use, particularly the way one is encouraged to flit back and forth throughout the book. The information is not presented in a clear, easy-to-access manner. Which is too bad, because the author comes across as a very likable person.
Where's The Spirituality????.......2004-02-24
I bought this book in the hopes of finding out the meaning behind the clutter in my home and how it connects to myself in a spiritual manner. I thought the focus would be on awareness of what it all means and enpowerment to change. Unfortunately, what I got was how to file. Very disappointed since I purchased 2 books and gave one to a friend, who feels the same way. A total waste of money.
Understanding your mess and yourself!.......2003-05-11
Kristan offers guidance - with no judgment - about how to understand why we have trouble getting organized and what to do about it. This book works for the collector of huge amounts of junk to the occassionally-my-desk-gets-too-messy and I don't know where to start person. There are how-to's for filing and sorting and making decisions about stuff. On a more involved level, Kristan helps one prioritize and feel less stressed managing a life or job that requires constant multi-tasking. On the deepest level she offers spiritual or philosophical perspective on the relationship between us and our stuff.
I don't usually read how-to or self-help books, but this was a real find and has something for everyone.
An approach that works.......2003-04-18
I never thought the "why" of why I was disorganized was that important, but after I took a course with Pam Kristen and became better organized after it, I realized "why" actually matters. And what's more, recognizing "why" is key to getting organized. I began to see specific examples of "why" and "how" working together. For example, my desk was always cluttered with stacks. Why? I had no idea; I just wanted it cleaned up. But, after exploring "why" I began to see that the clutter serves a purpose. Yup, a purpose: If I can't find the memo from the client-from-hell, I don't actually have to write back! How handy. Now, I just bite the bullet, write back (or decide not to) and move on. Another example, I had stacks of invitations, lists, etc. piled high because I couldn't decide about those invitations and list items. Again this realization of "why" made it possible for me to "do." Now, I decide on the first or second view of the invitation/list/etc. or I throw it out. Again, the pile shrinks.

I finally purchased a copy of Aaron Carter, Little Prince of Pop written by his mother Jane Carter. It was an interesting read, in light of all of the recent publicity involving the Carter family. Some of the highlights of the book are the psychic connection between Aaron and his twin sister Angel and the near-death experience Aaron had when he almost drowned in the family swimming pool. God definitely seems to be watching out for Aaron. The book also talks about Aaron's relationship with his brother Nick and that they are almost like twins even though they are separated by several years. I have greatly enjoyed Aaron's music over the past few years. I am one of those 40-something fans of Radio Disney and Aaron Carter. I enjoy happy music that celebrates life. I wish Aaron well as he becomes an adult. If you look closely at the liner notes of the "Oh Aaron" CD, Aaron seems to be aware that fame is fleeting. Aaron, if by chance you read this review, you and your family are in my prayers. I look forward to a new album from you, because God has given you a special talent. I know I will enjoy any new recordings you may release. If you decide to go to college and persue Marine Biology, so be it! Follow your bliss!!! Thanks to you and your family for bringing a smile to my face!

My friend let me borrow this book to read and I loved it and had to get my own copy. I would recomend this book to anybody whether they are an Aaron Carter fan or not. I think this book is very well written and would give anyone a better idea of the person that Aaron Carter really is so they might appreciate him and his music more. If there is any one book about Aaron Carter that you should read, I definately say it should be this one.

I can only say my children and I have greatly enjoyed the stories in this book. It makes for good object lessons, bedtime reading and the children love the pictures and exploring the art within the book. I would have rather purchased a hardback of this one though.
