Book Description
In this, the first full-length, scholarly examination of Martin's career readers will encounter a devoted public servant who often modified his party's extreme stances on domestic matters during the Great Depression and on foreign policy issues leading up to World War II. This political biography effectively illustrates that bipartisanship does not mean abandonment of principles, that kindness, integrity, and gentility are compatible with effective leadership, and that close friendships with members of the opposing party can contribute to a more effective Congress.

Customer Reviews:
Only for Newbies.......2006-04-25
After reading this book cover to cover I found very few things that helped me (a self proclaimed tightwad).
The book had a few good "comics" but I could have waited for the Sunday funnies. The recipes are terrible. A few tips for cleaning and sprucing up the house, a few forms, i.e. budget, shopping list, menu planning, last will and testament, but nothing much else. The 5 big tips that can change your finacial life are not new to the seasoned tightwad but could possibly help the newbie. This book is a waste of time and money for the seasoned tightwad.
Practical Advice.......2006-04-02
If you're looking to save money for a special occasion or just looking to cut back on your overall expenses, this is a great book for you. In this no-nonsense book by identical twin sisters you will learn how to reduce or eliminate bills and manage and organize your homes. This "common cents" knowledge will revolutionize the way people look at money; for instance nearly everything can be recycled: Make a coffee table from an old window, door or board. Add bricks or flowerpots for legs. Cut a slit in the shape of an X in an empty prescription bottle for a traveling toothbrush holder. Use soda-pop can tabs for picture hangers. Glue to the back of picture frame with just the top of the clip showing so as to nail easily to the wall. A candle placed in a cheese or vegetable grater looks fabulous at night. Tie the top with a red ribbon to make it even more festive. The tighwad twins also timesaving forms, quick-and-easy recipes for no-fuss, cheap meals, and lists of organizations that give away freebies. A lot of the hints & tips in this book really are common sense once you actually think about them. However, if you're like me and already live a simplified life you many not find this book as helpful as it would be to a newbie but there's still some useful tips to be had.
Fun to read.......2005-11-14
I enjoyed the book. I did wonder about some tips though. The crockpot meal ideas were for ingredients like canned soup and canned chicken that are already cooked. I wondered why such ingredients would need to be heated all day in a crockpot. To save opening cans and waiting for the food to heat at the end of the day, perhaps?
I also don't think dividing a house in order to take on a renter would be feasible for many people. There is the privacy issue, and any decent renovation to create a separate apartment would involve more than most women with "little time and no dime" could manage. Becoming a landlord isn't without complications such as necessary repairs and problem renters.
I also wondered about the business in a box. I think most women would be embarrassed to buy cheap potpouri at the dollar store, put it into baggies tied with ribbons and handmade tags and re-sell it at a vastly inflated price. Yes, people may feel sorry for someone who says they are doing this to help with family expenses. They may assume you have no money for food. This business is one step short of shaking a donation can on street corners. If a family member needs life-saving surgery I can understand doing it, but otherwise, no thanks!
However, I enjoyed the tips and the spunky attitude- the authors are experts at making the best of what they have and apparently know what it is like to have very little. As with any tip book, you choose the tips that are right for you.
The twins' bigger financial tips are fabulous and fast........2003-12-24
I enjoyed this book from the twins even more than any of the others. I have already started using the bigger life-changing ones and I look forward to next month when I will see the differerence in my finances when my house makes me money while I sleep. It is funnier than the others and I loved the success stories. They were my motivation to get busy. I look forward to seeing the twins on television as I have in the past. As the twins say: this book is not for everyone, just for people who really need to save some big money and have a small income. Double advice from them which is good for us out here in the real world. I love these girls!

A Worthy Addition to Your Library........2005-11-01
A wonderful book that is replete with detail, this edition is indispensable for those who frequent auctions and antique shops. The examples given in the book run the gamut from utilitarian/functional to elaborate/ornate. The book is weighted towards the low-medium market, and examples of antiques that are reachable only to those with a prodigious income are few and far between; no Boulle, Belter, or Marot to be seen here. As such, this volume is infinitely usable, and somewhat of a welcome change from the reams of books focused on antiques only seen at Sotheby's or museums. This volume makes a wonderful companion to Miller's Price Guide.

This handy, authoritative guide contains over 300 premier examples of American case furniture -- chests, cupboards, & desks -- built from the 17th century to the mid-20th. The stitch and flip technique is an easy way to build a quilt design. By sewing fabric strips onto a muslin foundation, flipping them at the seam line, and adding more strips over the raw edges, quilters with even limited experience can achieve dynamic creations without the painstaking labor of piecework. Valori Wells's bold sense of color and freewheeling approach to design yields eye-catching quilts that are delightful twists on more traditional patterns. (The Moon Phases quilt is particularly striking, a monochromatic symphony of blacks and grays that provides a nice lesson on understanding color value.) Good directions and excellent color photos make for an appealing presentation. --Amy Handy

Health Vegan cooking done right!.......2005-04-11
I am proof that vegan cooking is not always healthy! But i was looking for a healthy book and after watch marie oser od vegtv i decided to get her book. Her cooking is so great! Most of her recipes and fast and moderatly easy. You should know how to cook alittle. In the begining she gives information on a healthy diet and the link to disease. All the stuff i am very well aware of, but a nice touch for those you don't know. The only mistake was not putting either vegetarian or vegan in the title. It doesn't show up on the vegetarian cookbook search. But he cookbook is completely vegan! She puts tofu is almost everything, but you can't tell. Her crepes where unbelievable, and my mom liked them more than my pancakes. Her desserts are even healthy and taste good too. She uses wheat pastry flour and soy flour alot but that can be found at most heath foods. A good mix of recipes! And if you can't find some ingredients there is a chapter on where to find them. I can't wait to keep using this book... so i can eat well!
Vegan made easy!.......2002-12-15
Being vegan can be a chore sometimes - it's the best diet in the world, yet it takes such an effort to avoid the proliferance of animal products in this country! But Marie Oser makes being vegan easy - and fun - and DELICIOUS! I have worn out her two other books from use, and I enjoying this new one so much. Every recipe is so tasty, her books have expanded my menu incredibly! The Enlightened Kitchen is informative, too - jam-packed with details to help you make good eating choices. You'll love it!
The Enlightened Kitchen.......2002-11-12
I heard that the author of the fabulous "Soy of Cooking", Marie Oser had a new book the "Enlightened Kitchen". I couldn't wait to get it. I wasn't disappointed. It is a wonderful collection of flavorful vegan recipes that I can make myself. I never have had an issue with trying to find the ingredients because so many are now available in supermarkets. If I'm unfamiliar with a product, Marie's Englightened Pantry serves as a wonderful reference guide. One of my favorite things about the Enlightened Kitchen is the way the recipes are layed out. They are easy to follow and come together quickly. And the best part in my family loves them! My 5 year old likes helping in the kitchen and it is nice to know I have a collection of Marie's cookbooks that can assist me in showing my daughter how to cook healthy. Since the holiday's are right around the corner, I'm going to be giving the "Enlightened Kitchen" as gifts this holiday along with fresh baked Cranberry Walnut muffins, Chocolate Chip Banana Bread and the Pumpkin Raisin Breads to friends and family.
Thank You Marie for Saving Lives!.......2002-11-07
I have always been concerned about what types of foods I consume on a daily basis and what the impact will be. Now with Marie's new book and these additional recipes, I can continue to prepare delicious menus and know I am putting the best products and ingredients into my blood stream. Her recipes are excellent with very little or no fat and no cholesterol. Wow! It is amazing that she continues to produce these award winning dishes that you can make for pennies on the dollar which are so good for you. Thank you Marie. I feel terrific!!!
Better than Great.......2002-11-01
I have found Marie Oser's recipies to be much better than gourmet restaurants. This book is better than great. The food is delicious and the recipies are simple enough for my brown-thumb of cooking.

The Best Story of SOUSA........2007-02-17
This book is very well written with lots of great pictures of Sousa and people involved in this great
American's life.
This is a great book.
Highly recommeded.
Like eating crab.......2005-08-04
There seems to be little in the way of information on this amazing composer. The author, an engineer, writes like one: dry, factual, and with lots of padding -- a trait that the March King himself abhorred. However, as with trying to get the sweet meat out of Dungeness crab, there are some tidbits worth fighting for. On the back, I may have found a reference to what I was really seeking: the stories behind Sousa's music. I guess the best I can say is that, despite pedantic and fussy details, I was able to cull the appreciation of a true musical genius and American. I'll keep looking for a book I can enjoy -- perhaps Sousa's own autobiography, if I can find it.
The Life of John Philip Sousa.......2002-03-07
This is the definitive bio on J. P. Sousa. The author has lovingly researched his topic, gathering in all sorts of details about the legendary March King. It is sad that most Americans are only familiar with a handful of the great mans works. What this book reveals about Sousa is the great variety of music that he composed. Besides 136 excellent marches, he composed operettas, humouresques, and many other kinds of works. Without a doubt Sousa is our most prolific composer, the sheer volume and qaulity of his works far surpassing all other American composers. Yet the vast majortiy of his music is little heard these days. It is true that Sousa's music appealed to an America of a different time. His marches have all the power of an emerging young United States, just entering into the realm of international politics and industrial might at the turn of the century. In these political correct times Sousa's music might be perceived as being too chauvanistically patriotic in outlook. Hopefully in the post 9/11 world that we live in there is room for a revival of his music to bring back some of the nations pride in itself. Mr. Bierley considers the Sousa band is the greatest of its kind in the world. There is more than a little typical American tendency for overstatement here. Certianly in the States in the latter part of the 19th century there were few rivals for Sousa's band. But in Europe many fine military bands already existed and Sousa, though well received on his numerous tours abraod, faced much more critical acclaim. As director of the US Marine Band, Sousa certainly transformed that musical organization into the top-notch band that it is today. In fact, Sousa probably modelled his own band on the Garde Republicanne of Paris, but also any of the British or Prussian Guards bands could have served as inspiration as well. Mr. Bierley has brought together a number of fine photos of Sousa and his band, and highlights the many well known and famous musicians that served within the Sousa Band during its 40 year life-span. The music of J P Sousa evokes a bygone era in the United States. He was instrumental in both introducing and uplifting the music that was performed in this country. We could certainly use his like again as current music standards and tastes have fallen fall below what they were even in Sousa's day. Let us hope for a healthy re-birth of music and someone like Sousa to inspire us musically once more.
The biography of John Philip Sousa.......1998-09-25
This book is by far and away THE book for the life of John Philip Sousa. Mr. Bierly has researched his subject in depth from help with the Sousa family former sousa Band Members and material in the Library of Congress, Masrine Band Archives, Univ. of Illinois and others. If you want to know Sousa, this is the book Joe L. Norcross

The world must know who Palestinians are !.......2002-08-01
The author writes his experience as a Palestinian refugee, gives the reader an idea of how Palestinians have been through numerous problems and crisis ever since their exodus from THEIR land in 1948 by the Zionists. He also gives a true picture of the Arab situation, how weak it is, and how Arabs even were against Palestinians themselves. The book is unique since the author combines some of his personal experience with stories, political history, and review. It's a must-read book, gives a clear picture to those who really want to know more about the issue in the Middle East.
