The story of Joseph Görres's life is in many ways the story of German political culture in the revolutionary epoch. Indeed, his dates, 1776-1848, frame the "Age of Revolution" and, like the age in which he lived, Görres's life was marked by great upheavals. One of the most prominent German journalists of his age, Görres pioneered political journalism, or what was called Publizistik in Germany. He was a founder of political Catholicism, and was in no small part responsible for the fact that Germany eventually developed a party based on the Catholic confession. Görres was also an extraordinarily prolific scholar with an almost dizzying range of interests. His life provides a window into an incredibly prolific era in European history, into the political implications of the Enlightenment, the wide-reaching intellectual movement of German romanticism, the roots of German nationalism, and the origins of German political party formation.

Görres traversed the entire political spectrum of his age: his youth, formed in the shadow of the French Revolution, was characterized by enlightened, cosmopolitan republicanism—what some have dubbed "German Jacobinism"; his middle years included a romantic phase, in which he helped foster a nascent German cultural nationalism, before he became a fiery nationalist writer and publisher of the Rheinischer Merkur, the most important political newspaper in Germany up to that time. In the sunset of his life he was primarily a Catholic political polemicist.

Görres helped shape the immensely creative and pivotal years in which he lived, years that saw the development of the modern state system, of modern philosophy, the origin of the political spectrum in Germany, of the very concepts “liberal” and “conservative,” which are so much a part of our political discourse today.

Not as professional as I expected.......2005-01-06

Finally a comprehensive book about the great Motoen artists from the "Golden Age." The A-Z format made it very easy to read, but the technical structure of the book seemed unprofessional and very computer generated. Sometimes graphics covered text completely. The photographs aren't exactly "unseen" as they are various. I expected less euphemisms and an accurate story. Some of it was very good, like info on David and Jimmy Ruffin's relationship with the Tempts and Motown, although you have to look around for it.

I gave it four stars because I wish that there was more on some of the lesser known artists at Motown. But overall, this is a great book filled with great photos of artists in their heyday and full of facts that probably weren't known about them until now. And they weren't just still B&Ws, there were photos of artists on tour, off tour, on break, very candid!

I'll Second That Emotion..........2002-03-02

The previous reviewers are absolutely right about this book. This is a fun and fascinating look back at a golden age of American popular music and the groups, producers and songwriters who made it happen. Much more than a rehash of the Motown story from secondary sources; the author personally interviewed many of the stars and lesser-known lights who helped create the music we love. Good, crisp writing and a generous collection of photographs bring the Motown story to life. A must-have for anyone who loves Motown or is interested in American popular music.

Encyclopedia of Hitsville.......2002-01-09

I got this book during the Christmas season and I can honestly say it was my best gift. Although I have always liked Motown, the subject is not one I would have requested a book on. Thank you you-know-who for disregarding my list this year. There is so much information here that I'm sure the author, for sanity sake, decided it was best to put it in an encyclopedia-like format. So, "M" for example, under Superstars, would list Martha and the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. This is not to suggest that because it's in that format, it'a a cold, reference book. Mr. Dahl presents each artist, songwriter, or musician's bio in a very readable, story-like way. And on some major artists, like the writers Holland-Dozier- Holland, they have their few pages, but in addition are incorporated into others' stories. In my family I'm considered the musical trivia expert, but a page didn't go by that I didn't learn something new and fascinating about an artist or the history of Motown. And there's a large section covering I believe every single person who even walked through the doors of Motown! I'm exaggerating, but it's an amazing list along with their stories of course. I was especially impressed with how Mr. Dahl brought out Berry Gordy's story of imagining the impossible and then bringing it to fruition. Oh yes, I forgot to mention there's a ...-load of great photos.

Not a beginner's book for blackwork.......2007-03-15

While the motifs are interesting and the sampler illustrations so clear a chart is not necessary, this is NOT a beginner's book. It only illustrates three simple stitches the running stitch, back stitch and cross stitch. The first two stitches are illustrated using the simplest technique of a straight line. If you find a pattern in the book with only straight lines, let me know. It does not explain how to map out the running stitch (the original blackwork) nor how to make the pattern reversible on the back side. Most of the patterns are complicated and I presume use the back stitch which is not nearly as neat. I also presume the patterns are not intended to be reversible and so no discussion references this technique. There are no charts which illustrate to a beginner how to stitch along the pattern making the back side as neat and tidy as possible. While I love the book for its authenic flavor in patterns, I am very disappointed in the lack of any explanation how to work truly reversible blackwork using the running stitch.

Excellent on-going reference.......2007-02-19

The clear instructions and stitch pictures are great for those who are beginning blackwork, but this book is an excellent reference for keeping. It will take a lot of stitching to grow out of all the fillings, borders and motifs included.

My one SMALL complaint is that I didn't really like the worked samples presented and most of the motifs were very traditional. I would have like some more that had a modern feel.

All in all a book well worth having on your bookshelf.

I agree with all the glowing comments of previous reviewers. This is my new favorite book; this is the first review I've ever written, so you know I feel strongly about this! Favorite features: straightforward presentation of info, extremely clear pictures. I'm off to buy her other book ("Traditional Blackwork Samplers") right now.

The best book I own.......2006-01-17

I have not let go of this book since I purchased it one week ago. Lesley Wilkins makes learning blackwork simple and addictive!

Not only are these patterns simple, to do great looking blackwork, you only need counted cloth ($2.00 for a good amount at any craft shop) and black thread ($0.25 a skien).

She presents the basic stitches, tips on framing, etc. -- you will learn the whole process.

I have never even done much sewing at all and I am already making beautiful things. What's more, she opens to door and points you to other resources. I have found vast amounts of patterns and historical info on the Internet and I can hardly wait to try sewing them all.

A Great Introductory Book to Blackwork!.......2005-03-01

I've just started doing a blackwork project, because I found a free chart on the Classic Stitches (based in Scotland) website, and now I'm hooked. The author did a very good job on presenting different fill-in stitches, borders, and motifs. I did not like the finished pieces he used as examples as well as finished pieces that I've seen in other books, but there are so many motifs to choose from that you could easily create your own samplers. The examples he used of finished pieces are so clear, that you can see the little blocks in the material. You could work right off from the example without even needing a corresponding chart to go with it. It is an excellent introductory book, and I will use it for years to come.

Above quotation is misleading.......2006-10-18

In the editorial reviews section above, a sentence from the review in Energy Design Update has been edited in a way to favor the book. One of the sentences in the long review (February 2006 issue of EDU) noted, "The book, though flawed, is a valuable introduction to green building principles." The reference to flaws was fleshed out over the next two and a half pages. Whoever created the blurb for this page conveniently snipped out the clause, "though flawed."

It's not great but I don't know any other one that is better...........2006-08-16

I bought this book after attending an exposition on ecohouses at the National Building Museum in Washington, which deeply inspired me. First of all I must say that I am not an architect or an engineer. Given that, the thing that annoyed me most about this book is the lack of depth in certain areas (I am a MD with a MSc in Toxicology and a PhD in Bioinformatics). I know that the book was written for a broad public but I expected to find more formulas and better explanations concerning the construction tecniques used for energy reduction. The book is too soft in some areas and does not explain in detail others (or is too confuse on the areas that it tries to go deeper). Also, the pictures don't have good legends and some times the reader is on its own when trying to interpret them. The chapter on ventilation has a lot of informations but I felt that it did not connected the dots very well. The chapter "Building-in soul", which has some kind of hollistic views on building ecohouses (in my point of view) is very obvious and mostly unecessary. In spite of that, I deeply enjoyed reading it and I would recommend the book. In the next edition I would like to see better diagrams, more technical information (formulas, tecniques, comparison tables etc). The examples at the end of the book could also be analyzed in more depth and using (as much as possible) homogeneous methods and the same parameters. More information on the additional cost to build ecohouses in relation to convetional ones would also be interesting.

This book has a good informational section at the beginning, but the recipes are a little too gourmet for me The average person will probably agree. While the dishes were very tastey, they were too much of a change from the flavors I'm used to, and there was a little too much involved in cooking them. Too much trouble while pregnant unless you're already used to gourmet cooking.

This book has some good general information on nutrition and such, but lacks in simplicity when it comes to the actual recipes. They are a bit "too" gourmet, and call for items that you would normally not have on hand. I'll tell you what; I am on my second pregnancy right now and I am too hungry to take the time and enegy to cook these recipes!

The Pregnant Gormet.......2003-04-21

I really enjoyed reading the informational section on diet and pregnancy, which outlines things you should and shouldn't eat. I also found that many of the recipes were great. There are recipes that cater to the meat and potato set as well as those who care to be a bit more adventurous, such as spinach and cumin soup (sounds delicious to me). There are recipes for beef, chicken, lamb, fish and vegetarian, plus deserts and salads...I found it all inclusive. I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in balancing real food with nutrition.

This book is awesome. So great to have all of these classic pics in one place. Barry Levine takes us from his earliest years with the band up until the Reunion Tour and it is a visual blast. The famous NYC Skyline shot is here as well as Spirit Of 76. First pressings of this book included an interview CD with Barry Citing particular times with KISS.

I recommend this to all KISS fans.

The pictures are great.Alas the binding ruins some great moments in KISStory,too bad because what you can see is great.Perhaps a re-release with better binding so we can what we missed.

The definitive Kiss book for those who like pictures.......1999-06-26

This book is the perfect counterpoint to Dale Sherman's "Black Diamond", which provides all the information you need about Kiss but no pictures. "The Kiss Years" gives you exactly the opposite: there are a few "behind the scenes" stories, but it is the pictures that count. This is a definitive collection of photographs of the most photogenic rock band in history. Other books try to provide a balance between pictures and information. Don't compromise: by purchasing this book and Dale Sherman's you'll get the best of both worlds.

I loved this book I must look at it once a day! I think the stories were fun to read and they weren't mean spirited just stoies. I havr been a Kiss fan since 1977 and They always have and always be the most visual band in history. So if you love Kiss or you just love well taken pictures this book is for you!
