The Oldest Gay Couple in America; a perspective.......2002-06-30
I have just finished reading this book, "The Oldest Gay Couple in America".
Having just celebrated a forty year committed relationship with my partner, I found much in this book that parallels our own experience in the past forty years. While these people were in New York City and involved with a professional life that in no way resembles our own, there were many instances which were remarkably similar to the experiences we have had. Regardless of the environment in which we live, the human element remains the same for all of us and the difficulties and rejection we all learned to experience and cope with are as painful and damaging for the more ordinary of us as for Bruhs and Gean. An outstanding account of love and devotion through agonizing times, it often brought both laughter and tears and was a privilege to be able to read, recommded by a good friend. Thank you for publishing it and making it available to the rest of us.
Let There Be Love.......2000-05-28
Included in Harwood's conversational memoir is first and foremost a love story of two men who lived lives as a couple before there was gay liberation, yet lived to see gay liberation come to be. Not that their lives weren't gay all along! The parties, the celebrities and the "love that dare not speak its name" mentality of America from the Depression through WWII to today. Harwood has also given us a clear insider's look of New York history, the arts and culture of several decades (with an emphasis on dance), and how the lack of money put strains on all human relationships. But what is most wonderful in Harwood's enchanting autobiography is his portrait of how all couples, gay or straight, face the same challenges, the same questions of what a relationship means, and how individuals must adjust to each other in sickness and in health through 70 years of living together. The entire story makes for entirely fascinating reading and will remain one of the best gay memoirs and gay history books available for years to come.
A rare look at an honest relationship... I cried.......1999-01-16
One can feel the love, fear, fun, and sorrow that Gean and Bruhs experienced through their lives. This was a truly heart-warming book. It strengthened my feelings for my 10-year relationship with my partner and gave me an insight to gay life "before my time". This is a great book for romantics dreaming of that illusive long-time companion. It proves it can be done!
Book Description
All the Right Moves: A Financial Road Map for the College Senior and New Graduate is a clear, cogent, guide to personal finance for Generations X and Y. With a light, often amusing style, the book covers investments, taxes, repaying student loans, credit, checking accounts, IRA's, budgeting, and day trading, but, unlike its competitors, All the Right Moves avoids dull, irrelevant topics like the price of gold and the inverse ratio of bond yields and bond price (yawn). And, unlike all other similar books, this one is not a just a series of unrelated chapters; rather, it begins with basics and builds to a climax, with a concrete, easy-to-follow financial plan for the reader that actually goes somewhere!
Customer Reviews:
Great financial guide for new college graduates.......2000-06-17
I would have thought that there were dozens of books like this one out there, but when I searched, that turned out not to be the case. I was glad to find this one, however, because it was so simple and straightforward in its message. If your college graduate is heading off to do an MBA at the Wharton school, this is probably not the book for him or her. But, if like mine, your college grad has only the fuzziest concept of how to manage money, this is the ideal book. It's clear, it's well-written, and the advice it gives is extraordinarily sensible. Take a look at the book, and I think you'll agree. Highly recommended!
All the Right Moves.......2000-06-13
All the Right Moves by Zachary Grossman and Janis Landis should be considered essential reading for all new college graduates. The book provides fundamental building blocks that will likely secure the financial future of those who follow it's easy to understand chapters.
Simply put - An inexpensive graduation gift, that keeps on giving!

Customer Reviews:
Great Educational Resource!.......2006-02-19
I bought this book for our store reference. My staff became hooked, the information is solid and written in a way that reads like a book built for leisure. One critique; There could be more pictures in her book, although a cliche - a picture is worth a thousand (descriptive) words. I will buy more books from Ms Matlins, she has established herself as THE DEFINITIVE WRITER for gems and pearls. Thanks for the great reading material. Veronica, Ali'i Jewelry - Hawaii
Another Winner by Matlins!.......2005-03-22
If you love pearls--or just want to learn more about them--this is the #1 book to buy. I have Matlins 'Jewelry & Gems: The Buying Guide' which is very well worn from use, so I decided to start learning more about pearls with this book.
Wow! Talk about bursting with information! Matlins covers everything from history and lore to famous pieces, moves on to explaining the differences/types of pearls, how to evaluate them, *and* what to look out for... she provides estimated value lists, gives advice on how to buy, wear and care for pearl jewelry. Whew!
Did you know a drop of salad dressing can ruin a pearl? I didn't!
The author also interviewed many pearl industry professionals and their thoughts are informative as well as (at times) entertaining. In fact, the entire book could be described as "conversational". It's not textbook in style, yet provides so much information it could be used as one!!
Do you sell pearls? The information Matlins provides can help you better understand and describe the charecteristics (and value!) of the pearls you sell. Are you looking to invest in pearls or start a collection? Add this book to your shopping cart--you might save hundreds or thousands in the long run.
But if you simply have a passion for pearls and want to learn all you can about them, this book is a "must have" for your library. It's comprehensive, loaded with tips, and easy to read. There aren't pages & pages of photos. It does have some good compare/contrast photos, as well as others of important or famous pieces. You may find yourself wishing there were more of the "educational" sorts of pictures, but overall that's a small nick in an otherwise glowing treasure. No doubt the binding will become worn from frequent use.
IN SUMMARY:I highly recommend 'The Pearl Book'. It's truly worth every penny. You'll know what to look for if you get this gem.
Fascinating! The Best I've Ever Read on Pearls........2000-02-07
This book covers everything anyone needs to know about pearls. It's filled with information that helped me finally realize what's important in selecting nice pearls, and why some are so much more expensive than others. I was so confused about them after talking to different jewelers that I wasn't sure what to buy (and they are too expensive to make a mistake). This book was a godsend. And I love the pearls I finally bought...and know they will stay beautiful! Also, I never knew there were CULTURED abalone pearls, but I plan to look for them for my next treat to myself!
GREAT JOB!.......1999-11-29
I've always admired the beauty of pearls, but never known much about them. The folklore and history explained in this book makes it as much an enjoyable novel as it is an informational source. The knowledge I have gained from reading this book is invaluable. (Remember, guys! We women just LOVE pearls!)
Read this first to save time and money for quality pearls........1999-09-06
A SUPER way to educate oneself before or during the process of selecting the right pearls.
Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Inspiring.......2006-04-03
Ms. Rauen's deeply felt ideas about creativity are inspiring. Her warmth and romance with art and life are evident. I especially enjoyed her thoughts on getting rid of negativity, and "filling up". The well organized projects are a lot of fun. I look forward to more of her titles.
Fresh, creative and user-friendly instructions!.......2005-07-09
I have both this book and "Cats in Hats" book and they are both invaluable resources for painting on wood, fabric, umbrellas, tile, as well as quilting, free-motion machine embroidery...well, you get the picture! A variety of approaches to fundamentally adorable designs add to the value of this book.
Clear and helpful directions and a sense of relaxed playfulness make this book a welcome addition to my art room library.
Kathleen
Comments from the author.......2003-06-12
"Sassy Cats" was not intended to be just a quilt book. The title is "Sassy Cats - Purrfect Crafts Projects". It has 15 projects for everything from silk painting, painting on wood, canvas, glass, and ceramics to applique, quilting, and free motion embroidery. As the author, I have been very pleased with the response and the feedback. In the book, I recommend that people play around with the designs, enlarging and reducing them for their specific project ideas. One fan even hooked one of the designs as a wool purse. Most of the designs lend themselves very well to be used as applique projects for quilting. Many of the painted projects were created in applique for HGTV's "Simply Quilts" television show with Alex Anderson. I'm sorry that the reviewer Lamkay thought it was just a quilt book. I do feel that based on her misunderstanding, her review is unfair and damaging to me. Thank you. Sheila Rauen
Disappointing!.......2002-05-14
I expected a quilt book and received a paint on silk book. If you like to paint on silk, buy it. If you expect patterns for quilting, forget it!
Sassy Cats.......2001-02-01
Anyone who crafts and loves cats will love this book! I first saw the author on Carol Duvall and knew that I had to try what she was demonstrating that day - a painted cat looking in a fishbowl. And when I found out she had written this book, I immediately went looking for it. You will NOT be disappointed. All of her projects have easy to follow instructions and they can also be used for any medium you want to try, be it painting, quilting, applique, etc. Her cat pictures are darling and my two (Mad Max and Maisie) already have their requests in to me! The only problem you'll have is trying to decide which one to do first!

Book Description
Alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and other jazz luminaries. This book includes a detailed discography and an index of recordings of Gryce's compositions.
Customer Reviews:
An Inspirational Wonderful Read.......2003-01-27
Rat Race Blues is a real find. This account of the life of Gigi Gryce was an inspiration to me. We read it in our library book club for January 2003, where it was a great hit with all our members.
I would recommend it to anyone who is curious about life and/ or music and particularly to young people, struggling against the odds of poverty and racism.
The book rediscovers Gigi Gryce, a name that appears on the records of numerous famous Jazz musicians,Cifford Brown, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach, Thelonius Monk, Donald Byrd, Art Farmer.... to name only a few.
The research done by Noal Cohen and Michael Fitzgerald is meticulous and sensitive. They manage to give us an insiders view of the Jazz scene in the 50's and early 60's, depicting Gigi's whole life from a strict and loving upbringing in Pensecola, Florida to his education at the Boston Conservatory; heady days in New York playing with all the greats and starting a family; his attempts to help musicians protect their publishing rights and finally his reinvention of himself as a teacher in the Bronx.
For the most part, the authors are in the background, letting the musicians, family and friends speak for themselves about their memories of Gryce. Some of the anecdotes are hilarious. There are also great photos, including one of a young Quincy Jones and Clifford Brown who worked with Gigi in the Lionel Hampton band.
Finding Gigi Gryce is akin to finding Zora Neal Hurston or more recently Henry Grimes.
Congratulations to the authors for a book that sets a high standard for biographies of musicians.
3C's:Comprehensive,Compelling & Cool!.......2002-06-16
This book is the most complete discography you will ever find about the jazz great, GiGi Gryce. It is well-written and a very fascinating history of jazz, itself, revealing many "insider" type anecdotes about the old days in jazz history. There are many interviews with famous jazz greats but best of all, the story of a very talented and enigmatic gentleman, Mr. GiGi Gryce
Kudos to to Cohen and Fitzgerald for a Class A book destined to become a textbook reference on this period in jazz history.

Book Description
Primarily a piece of creative writing and autobiographical literature of a very distinctive Central European kind, this detailed and imaginative short memoir is also an important document of the Holocaust in Hungary in 1944. Written by a master of twentieth-century Hungarian literature, it
describes life for the Jewish population of German-occupied Budapest--the constant fear of deportation overshadowing the daily trials of living in the ghetto--before concentrating on the writer's own internment in a labor camp during the first weeks of rule by the extremist Arrow Cross regime. The
experiences of those nineteen days spent in the camp are both harsh and disturbing, yet throughout his memoir Szep manages to maintain an extraordinary degree of compassion and detachment, even humor. Published to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the events described, this is the last of
Szep's many literary works to appear in English.
Customer Reviews:
A pleasure to read, despite the title.......2003-04-27
When you see the title and subtitle, you might expect an unrelentingly grim report--so unfortunately familiar from the genre of accounts by Holocaust survivors. Instead, after reading Erno Szep's story a few weeks spent digging trenches in a slave labor camp, you close the book not weary of a cheerless tale, but wishing you could have found out more--especially after Szep returned to Budapest just in time for the Soviet siege and the Nazi/Arrow Cross defense. In a series of very brief episodes, he relates with all the detail he can bear his view of the Jews in Budapest as most of its "able" men first were rounded up, then sent off to work under the sneers and beatings of the Arrow Cross. He conveys vividly the feel of forced labor and little food, the monotony, the damp, and the hunger increasing as their supplies and energy dwindle and the toil takes its toll.
Unlike some other Hungarian translations of texts, this one by John Batki, a scholar who left Hungary as a teenager, manages to render into very colloquial but never casual English what must be marvelous Magyar prose. Szep's style evidently is cosmopolitan, with a snap and joie de vivre that persists despite his subject matter. Imagine a less taciturn, more convivial counterpart to Primo Levi. My only withholding of a fifth star in the rating: a stereotypically verbose and clumsily experimental preface by Dezso Tandori that reminds me of the worst of translated Hungarian stylists too enamoured of their own cleverness to remember their reader's attention span. Stick with Szep's own "autobiographical statement" and Batki's remarks. How I wish Szep had written much more! (1884-1953)
Parts of his story shed new light on old events: the process by which were extended, denied, and re-extended passes by the Swedish (although Raoul Wallenberg's not mentioned by name--perhaps postwar Hungarian censorship may have been a factor?) and Spanish embassies; the fate of those who had grown up entirely Christian by birth and belief but had Jewish grandparents; the more recent converts hoping the excape the yellow star; and the printers. In this last vignette, Szep wonders why that largely socialist union, in WWI, allowed its members to produce so much propaganda for the capitalists. If they had simply refused to print the disortions of the ruling class, Szep muses, perhaps war would have been averted. Hmmm.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful self help book.......2007-01-13
I have read around 100 self-help books and would, unhesitatingly, count it as one of the best (if not the best). It gave me lots of food for thought. I think Jane should get onto the Oprah show. It merits that kind of attention.
Paul Heller
No more waiting.......2006-07-11
If you have thought to yourself or said out loud, "I just can't do this anymore" this engrossing, entertaining and practical approach to identifying the obstacles to living a vibrant and fufilling life is for you. Jane Straus provides tangible examples and exercises to help anyone who is really ready to address their 'endurance'. I have been acquainted with this author's work for many years and have seen impact in myself and others of her incisive and to-the-point remedies. She reveals her own inspiring story and those of many of her clients with compassion and humor, and invites the reader to undertake this exciting, and sometime painful path to a fuller, richer, more thriving life.
An Inspiring, Powerful Read.......2005-11-30
A fun and easy read, yet powerful and filled with insight and inspiring stories. Jane Straus has compassionately offered her heart and soul in this book about truth, authenticity, non-judgement and forgiveness. "Enough is Enough" provides the reader with a sobering look at how our fears and self-judgements stands in the way of living the life we were meant to live, and how in the end, it is all about forgiveness. Jane gently guides us with practical tools and exercises to help us move forward in the direction of our dreams. Thank you Jane for your honesty, humor and humaness in revealing your own fears and vulnerabilities. I see so clearly now how I have been creating distractions in my own life and I am now ready to live my one precious and extraordinary life with no more excuses! Thank you for this wonderful gift you have given to all of us and to the planet.
Practical advice that can help you impact your daily life immediately.......2005-11-28
I found this book very easy to read and, as strange as this might sound, I felt better immediately after reading it--like I really could change specific aspects of my life NOW if I was willing to see myself truthfully. The author uses personal experience, and the experiences of people she has coached in her professional life, to demonstrate how to stop enduring people, things, etc., in your life and start choosing to live a life that is aligned with your higher truth. While some books require extensive exercises and cumbersome companion workbooks, this book is much less threatening and provides thoughtful questions (she titles these "Time In") for your own consideration after she provides important "food for thought". One thing in particular that I appreciated about the author's approach is that living your life to the fullest is a process that can be started today, no matter what your situation. For example, one of her chapters is titled, "Daily Tonic for an Extraordinary Life" and she offers the following, "Living our truth cannot be for some future goal or noble end; our commitment to releasing judgment and limiting beliefs, practicing positive affirmation, honoring our emotions, and striving for win-win is the daily tonic for breaking free of our endurance." Wonderful stuff that I highly recommend to any reader!
An empowering book that will take you in the direction of your dreams!.......2005-11-08
So all this time I've been "enduring," I could have been thriving! That's the lesson of "Enough is Enough!" by life coach and consulting expert Jane Straus, who tells us that just enduring life is no way to happiness.
In this powerful and truly empowering book, Straus shows how we let our fears, limitations and beliefs lead us into a life where we are just going through the motions. Until we break the bonds of just "enduring," we cannot get to that marvelous place where we aren't just surviving, we are truly thriving, and this book is chock full of tips, tools and techniques for getting us there.
Using plenty of personal experience, plus that of clients she's coached to happiness and success, Straus takes us on a journey that begins by identifying the symptoms of endurance, which include not believing you have enough talent or time, ignoring your feelings, hoping things will change someday, distracting yourself with food or busywork, and more. Once we know HOW we endure, we can then work to change our habits and live a life with more integrity and authenticity.
The chapters help us to find ways to drop our "acts" and find our real inner drives, how to let our heart be free to tell us what it wants, how to forgive ourselves and others so we can move past the past, how to think outside of our comfort zone, and how to constantly find inspiration around us to keep us going in the direction of our dreams.
The author's use of her own personal journey and those of her clients really add so much depth and insight, and reading about how others reached their "enough is enough" point is inspiring and motivating. This is a book that can change so many aspects of your life, as it focuses on getting out of the "just getting by" mode and into a more proactive and enthusiastic way of being in the world.
"Enough is Enough!" is a book that will change the way you look at the life you are now living, and help you shape it into the life you've always wanted to live.
Book Description
Published in the summer of 1999, this issue asked "what if either computer programmers have been able to identify and replace all potentially disruptive chips or it turns out that the threat of Y2K-induced disruptions was overblown?" And the answer provided continues to have significance for communities in our technologically competent, post-Y2K society.
Identifying community leadership as the key to meeting the potential challenges that Y2K posed, this issue becomes a textbook of problem solving at the community level in the face of the random, unknown, and pervasive risks Y2K posed. As federal and state agencies concentrated on the technical end of the issue, local governments were left to respond individually to the community impact of Y2K-induced disruptions. Examining the common response of the time, which favored isolating behavior that placed individual survival over civic cooperation, contributors demonstrate how Y2K anxiety created the need for government, business, and nonprofits to come together with citizens in an inclusive and collaborative problem-solving process. They provide the steps for creating civic or safe spaces, where different perspectives share an equal voice and work together, places where concerned individuals of diverse points of view are brought together to resolve differences and develop strategies to address complex issues like Y2K.
Since this issue's publication, other national events have seriously impacted local community infrastructures with the same disruptive nature once attributed to the Y2K. The need for collaborative and inclusive community leadership in disaster preparation planning or in response to the unforeseen is never out of date.

Book Description
Salamone Rossi (c.1570-c.1627) occupies a unique place in Renaissance music culture: he was the earliest outstanding Jewish composer to work in the European art music tradition. Working for the Gonzaga dukes in Mantua, yet remaining faithful to his own religious community, Rossi has a biography fraught with difficult and often exciting questions of socio-cultural order. How Rossi solved, or appears to have solved, the problem of conflicting interests is a subject worthy of inquiry, not only because we want to know more about Rossi, but also because Rossi can stand as a paradigm for other Jewish figures who, contemporary with him, moved between different cultures.
Customer Reviews:
Honest and insightful biography of a great Torah scholar.......2005-03-27
Rabbi Jehiel Jacob Weinberg 1884-1966 was one of the Torah giants of this century. He was the preeminent European posek(Halachic decisor) in the post- war period. This biography tells his own personal life story but also provides an insight into the struggles of various streams within the Orthodox world for position and predominance during his lifetime. A product of the world of the Yeshivot and of the Mussar movement he also was educated as a scholar at the University of Giessen. There he was taken under the wing of a great Gentile scholar of Judaism Paul Kahle. There too he taught a class in Torah to non- Jewish students .His immense learning won him the respect of scholars throughout the world of Jewish learning. Shapiro makes it clear that Weinberg was an advocate of what he himself exemplied the combination of Torah learning and higher secular studies. And that Weinberg was troubled in his last days at the thought of a Jewish world of learning so narrowly focused as to lose its capacity to have influence in the real world. He believed for instance that certain kinds of secular knowledge would be necessary to make the state of Israel viable and independent. Shapiro does not provide a deep psychological analysis of Weinberg's character but does tell the basic biographical story including that of his unfortunate marriage. He indicates that Weinberg lived his life in great loneliness, especially in his last post- war years in Montreux where he headed a small Yeshiva.
This is in a way an unusual biography of a Torah giant as it not a hagiography, but provides a solid historical accounting. It is again especially instructive in the picture it gives of the Orthodox Jewish world, its divisions and conflicts.
Weinberg is presented as a human figure capable of error(As in his initial support of the Nazis when they first came to power. An opinion he rapidly changed) but also as a great Torah scholar dedicated to the ideal of Jewish learning and the preservation and enhancing of the Torah world.
Shayloh: Does one Recite Hatov Hametiv on this Book?.......2003-07-30
To many the life and works of Rav Weinberg were merely obscure shallos u teshuvos. Any controversy regarding his views was brushed off with a wave of the hand. The seridei eish had been misappropriated and assimilated into the haredi protoplasm...
Commonly heard "he was forced to go to college" "it was a horaas shah".... Thankfully, a full exposition of his explosive ideas is now available. The reality of the great man, this whole person, is open and exposed. Let us all strive to learn from the overwhelming truth and the intelluctual engagement of this revivified Weinberg.
Interesting biography of a tormented scholar.......2001-02-05
Shapiro has produced an extremely interesting biography of a tormented rabbinic scholar who was fated to live through some of the most terrible decades of Jewish history. Shapriro leans heavily on the side of "modern orthodoxy" in his evaluation of Rabbi Weinberg and perhaps could have given more weight to his correspondence and interaction with East European (later American and Israeli) gedolim. The self-imposed isolation in post-war Switzerland is not fully explained and could have stood a more in-depth pyschological analysis. However a brave attempt at a very difficult subject.
Not Your Typical Artscroll Biography.......2000-04-09
This book is extremely well researched and well written. The author points to conflicting tendencies in Weinberg's personal letters. Shapiro points to the one's that indicate a modern-orthodox view of Weinberg, while dismissing the other letters as the one Weinberg did not actually mean. Indeed, Shapiro apologizes for not having had access to too many of the other kinds of letters which most assuredly exist.
Exciting and indispensable.......1999-12-30
To the reader interested in cultivating a religious outlook or in figuring out "how we got here", Marc Shapiro's book is indispensable. Shapiro devotes two hundred-plus pages to effectively capturing the genius and complexity of the historically pivotal Rabbi Jehiel Weinberg. The author paints his Weinberg against the dizzying circus of conflicting alternatives that were once available to the intellectually curious traditional Jew: the Mussar Movement, Haskalah, Zionism, and enlightened German Orthodoxy. The interactions between competing Jewish interests are sometimes comical, oftentimes nasty.
If Shapiro is correct, Weinberg is among only a handful of Orthodox Talmudists who truly embraced western culture and critical thought in all endeavors, including religion -- almost welcoming the tension that accompanies such an openness.
Rabbi Weinberg battled for an enlightened Orthodoxy and cared for its community of adherents for most of his life, always maintaining his principles in the face of adversity. The volume highlights Weinberg's many run-ins with elitist colleagues in the east to whom Torah im Derekh Eretz was a silly philosophy of last resort, as Weinberg himself once thought.
One is extremely troubled by the uninformed opinions of certain rabbis who rejected a synthesis of Judaism and western culture without ever having tasted the latter. The thoughtful reader comes away with the impression that any attempt at reconciling old school Lithuanian Orthodoxy with its secularly educated western counterpart is doomed to fail.
Bear in mind, though, that this volume is far removed from the hagiography that many have come to expect for the glorification of legendary figures. Empathy on the part of the reader is required to understand Weinberg's constant derision of allegedly corrupt fellow scholars, an occasional disdain for the uneducated masses and a failed marriage. Weinberg's apologies on behalf of the then-new Nazi regime should also be sympathetically viewed in historical context.
