A ripple of hopes........2003-06-26
RFK was a great man like his brother, if you want to know a little bit about him, read it. There a few rare photos. For a more complete biography buy RFK and his time or the Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys.
Excellent book about RFK!.......2003-06-15
This is the perfect book if you want to know a little bit about RFK! There are some rare photos, but not enough. The texts are quite complete but if you want to seriously study the subject buy Schlesinger's "Robert Kennedy and his time".
EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO A GOOD MAN.......2000-09-27
Robert Kennedy was my very first hero as a child. One of my fondest memories was watching the then Senator on the evening news and my mother telling me that "Senator [Robert] Kennedy is a man who cares about people. That's why we voted for him." I believed that fully.
This is a book I would have LOVED as a child. This is a book I respect as an adult. I feel it gives young readers a good overview of the Senator's life and character and makes him somebody they can relate to. We follow the progress of little Bobby, 8 and 10 years younger than brothers Jack and Joe respectively determined to keep up with them. We smile at the small boy who was so determined to teach himself to swim that he flung himself into the ocean at age 4. Some 35 years later, we see that same little boy, now a Senator, determined to climb a previously unscaled mountain in Canada. He was a man who suffered from acrophobia, but he tabled his terror and climbed that mountain out of love for his brother.
Robert Kennedy is a hard worker and his life is a litany of hard won successes. He had to live with people comparing him to his brother Jack, who was elected president in 1960. He had to contend with the feeling that he was still trying to keep up with Jack. It is only in the tragic aftermath of Jack's death does the full adult face of Robert Kennedy emerge -- the man who had previously worked behind the scenes promoting his brother becomes a KNOWN force to be taken seriously. He is the man who in addition to pursuing teamsters and mafiosi ("bad guys who break the law") finds his own voice, his own interests and his own identity beyond the shadow of his brother. He is the man who, in the last half decade of his life became the voice for many. He was better than a great man. Robert Kennedy was a good man.
That same caring side is brought out on issues concerning minorities, poverty and civil rights. The man who would be president in 1968 comes across as serious and sincere in his efforts. As we track him on the campaign trail in 1968, we are left with the painful question of what the intervening years would have been had he lived to win that presidential election.
Book Description
In the annals of seafaring and exploration, there is one name that immediately evokes visions of the open ocean, billowing sails, visiting strange, exotic lands previously uncharted, and civilizations never before encountered -- Captain James Cook.
This is the true story of a legendary man and explorer. Noted modern-day adventurer Martin Dugard, using James Cook's personal journals, strips away the myths surrounding Cook's life and portrays his tremendous ambition, intellect, and sheer hardheadedness to rise through the ranks of the Royal Navy -- and by his courageous exploits become one of the most enduring figures in naval history.
Full or realistic action, lush descriptions of places and events, and fascinating historical characters such as King George III and the soon-to-be-notorious Master William Bligh, Dugard's gripping account of the life and death of Captain James Cook is a thrilling story of a discoverer hell-bent on going farther than any man.

Cook as an Explorer, Cartographer, Nutritionist and Scientist: Raising the Bar.......2007-01-16
A well-written, well-researched account of the life and times of Captain James Cook who was not only an outstanding explorer and all-around good man but who also found a way to prevent beri-beri during long months at sea. His detailed charting of New Zealand is still a benchmark of excellence. He left his indelible mark upon the world.
An amazing individual who did travel farther than any man!.......2006-12-13
What a surprise I found myself reading this book. For years I had wanted to read a biography of Captain Cook. Then I had the great pleasure to read BLUE LATITUDES, BOLDLY GOING WHERE GAPTAIN COOK
HAS GONE BEFORE (2002) by Tony Horwitz which is in part a biography told via a humorous travel narrative. And then I read the more detailed and dry COOK: The Extraordinary Voyages of Captain James Cook (2003) by Nicholas Thomas which is not so much a biography but a study of all three voyages told from all points of view. Then I came upon Martin Dugard's book which I found a fun, simple, and excellent straight forward biography. Yes, the book is flawed a bit by some psychological guesses about Cook's behavior on his final voyage with no source notes to back up the argument. Yet this is a marvelously entertaining read in similar fashion to my all time favorite page turner about another early discoverer, OVER THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, Magellan's terrifying circumnavigation of the globe (2003) BY Laurence Bergreen. Dugard also did a great job of explaining Cook's patrons in England and how he advanced and won the right to Captain these three voyages of discovery. Should a dare say there is a small biography of the Earl of Sandwich contained in these 287 pages too. I recommend Farther Than Any Man for those who want a short fun good read while learning more about an amazing individual who did indeed go Father than any Man.
errors about cooks first nz visit.......2005-07-15
i have spent my life around cook strait,i give talks on what cook did on his first visit, and mr dugard clearly has no idea of what cook did, every item is incorrect, wrong in all detail and he has clearly never visited the ships cove, queen charlotte sound nor read Beaglehole or cooks log,,the book is the worst i have seen of hundreds written and should not have been published with all the errors in it,it is also trivial even the locations are wrong,,,i have 40years experience of the area and am surprised this book sells
Enjoy the book - ignore the details.......2004-10-24
Dugard's slightly fanciful account of Cook's voyages certainly makes for an entertaining read - I read it cover-to-cover on a recent trip to Hawaii.
However, despite the lively, engaging style, it is a bit scant and even sloppy in some areas - particularly the account of Cook's interaction with Australian Aborigines near present day Cooktown and the Easter Island encounter.
That said, I enjoyed it.
GOOD OVERVIEW - WELL WORTH THE READ.......2004-10-10
If you are a history buff, amature psychologist, or professional traveler, this book is easly trashed. It's inconsistencies, geography and attempts psychoanalysis are sort of sad. That being said, it is a fine book! Read it for what it is - a nice yard about a real individual who greatly influenced our history and use it as a launch for further, mroe indepth studies of a fastinating man and time. I like the author's style. He is actually readable. There is no attempt to come across as a great historical guru who happened to take World History 101 while in college. I get quite sick of "academics" who just hate for their territory to be tromped on, and their freshman following, who after reading one or two history texts, are experts. Certain reading should be for pure pleasure, other reading for serious study - lets not mix them up. Her we have a book that is a pleasure to read, and we can even learn a bit from it - what more could you want? Buy it. Read it and enjoy. He Martin, lets have some more! Don't let the History Grunts get you down!

Tax book........2006-11-13
I used to use Lassers all the time to help me do my taxes. However since Tax programs have been out I have used them. I thought it time to review some of the basics myself. I trust Lasser's guides.
Very Thorough and Detailed Book.......2006-03-03
This is a good book to help prepare someone with an estate plan before consulting a lawyer. Depending on your situation, it might be easier to use this book and some estate planning software instead of paying a lot of money for an attorney. I think the key here is that this book will help motivate people to TAKE CARE OF YOUR ESTATE! After you read some of the stories that occur when people fail to do this you will be glad you have purchased this book. It certainly is not a substitute for an attorney, but it will help make the layperson ask those critcal questions as to what should be done with their estate after they are deceased. It talks about avoiding estate taxes, setting up partnerships, trusts, financial planning, life insurance, and gives some referrals to professionals in each one of these fields.

Customer Reviews:
What you must know now about estate and tax planning.......2002-05-23
I would encourage every taxpayer in America to read this book. It examines what the new tax law means, not just what it says. Stewart Welch III and Harold Apolinsky have addressed the questions all of us are asking, and a few we may not have thought of yet. Who would have ever thought a book on tax law would be so enjoyable to read and easy to understand? I am grateful for these two experts' wonderful resource and guide. Read it!
A lifeboat in a sea of confusion and complexity.......2002-05-08
An excellent resource for those who want objective advice and guidance on very complicated subjects. The authors take very technical concepts and explain them in plain language. The worksheets, checklists and diagrams are very helpful.
A Great Find.......2002-05-03
What a great book! Everything you need to know about estate and tax planning in one easy to read book. This book is all you need! You can find what your looking for right away!
A valuable addition to any financial planning library.......2002-05-02
In guiding my clientele through the ever-changing maze of estate tax planning law, I have found JK Lasser's New Rules for Estate Planning and Tax to be an invaluable body of knowledge that I have referenced again and again. The easy-to-read layout allows quick focus on particular issues and topics that are presented in clear and concise laymen's terms.
Helpful Estate Planning Tips from A to Z.......2002-04-26
I enjoyed Stewart Welch's first book on Estate Planning so much that I ordered 10 copies to give to clients and friends. I plan on doing the same for his second book, which is even more comprehensive and should be part of any investors' reference library.

Very dissapointed.......2005-05-02
I bought this book because I was interested in Pique Assiette and the only other review said it was very good. Now after buying it I see that every single project has exactly the same instructions! Basically you are reading the same text over and over again and all thats changing is the photos. Take my word, save your money and buy something else.
A great "how-to" book, great gallery.......2003-11-05
This book does a really great job of teaching you how to create really fun projects. Simple, easy to follow instructions. The gallery section is very cool, with all kinds of great art that will spark new ideas for stuff you can create for your house and garden.
Loved it!

And Rita Marley's role in this exploitation and abuse is exposed.
In recording Taylor's years as Marley's manager, and his role in the handling of Bob's affairs after his death, this book fully reveals all the behind-the-scenes manipulations which have led to the many open court conflicts, highlighting the illegal activities of those who still continue to distort Bob's acievements.

Marley and Me
By: Don Taylor
Music! It was Bob Marley's passion and his way of making a living. He usually never stayed in a single relationship for a long time except on a few occasions. He loved his children and often said that his money was actually theirs. He grew up in Kingston, Jamaica where his mother abandoned him. Bob was used to seeing the gangsters, pimps, etc. because he sort of lived in a place that has lots of them. He started a band and they called themselves the "Wailers". In his songs he would talk about problems going on in Jamaica. After a while Bob adopted the Rasta religion which wasn't very popular at the time. Later it would also be adopted by higher classman. That is the reason the reason why Bob has dreadlocks because it is part of his religion. Police would often make people cut off their dreadlocks because of the influence they had on politics. Bob would also use drugs openly because that was also part of his religion. He would use them during live concerts to. Rita, who was Bob's actual wife, often would steal money from Bob and sign checks with his signature. Bob only married Rita because they had children together and she needed someone to support her. The woman Bob really loved was Cindy Breakspeare. Bob also had a child with Cindy. Then Bob's manager Don Taylor discovered that Bob had cancer and needed treatment. Bob went on the proper diet for the treatment for a while. After he got into an argument with Don Taylor he stopped the treatment and eventually the cancer spread to his brain and killed him. I recommend this book to people who like Bob Marley's music and want to find out more about him. This is an excellent book with many interesting things.
I liked the book because it told me facts that I never knew about Bob Marley. I didn't know about him being really good at soccer. In fact he could have played professionally! Instead he decided to play music even though he also had a passion for soccer. I didn't know his wife was dishonest and Bob didn't really like her. Bob even said, "Rita can sign mi name betta dan me!" That is why she signed checks in his name and stole his money in everyway you can think of. Bob and Don were shot by gangsters because Bob was trying to unite Jamaica with a free concert for two rival gangs. Bob was nicked in the chest while Don was basically blocking most of the bullets from hitting Bob. Bob also usually had several girls around him all the time. They would usually just follow him around until he made them go away. Bob didn't really mind but Cindy and Rita did.
Bob was a compassionate person even though his nickname was "Tuff Gong". He cared mainly for his family especially his children. He would buy them whatever they needed whenever they needed it. He would use little money for himself. He refused to travel by limo because it would make people look bad. He just wanted to live a life where he didn't look rich. He even bought a house for his mother, Rita, and Cindy. He would pay his band extra money even when they didn't ask for it. He would give money to the poor also. He tried to basically make all Jamaicans live a better life at the expense of him living with all of the expenses.
Bob often showed the energy he had in him by demonstrating through his songs and everyday life. During one of his concerts the crowd went wild and Bob put the microphone down and started jumping up and down and danced. Just because of that he decided to do another song for the same crowd. He occasionally started getting angry at Rita and sometimes beat her for stealing his money. He was in such a bad mood he even pointed a gun at Don Taylor, his friend and manager. He also showed his energy on the soccer field. He was athletic and definitely could have played professionally. Bob would often go out on the soccer field in the early morning before rehearsal to have a few hours by himself to play soccer.
Bob was a compassionate and interesting person. My recommendation would go to people who love Bob Marley and his music. People who would also want to learn more about him should buy this book. Bob loved music, his children, and soccer. He loved his family and tragically died of cancer in 1981. Bob was a great player and singer and helped change the world and peoples' minds everywhere about music. He was loved by many and still is. He helped unite Jamaica and made life better for everybody else.

Knowing Marley.......2005-10-14
It is hard to get to know Bob from a Business view - this story was more of Don Taylors life and thoughts, as it should be, he did write the book. This is a great book to read, even if it is to see Bob Marley in someone else's eyes. I have been a fan of Bob's for Many years and I must say, there were more than a few new things I learned. I could have done without the ending, knowing all of his financials and all that happened to his estate. Personally, that is something the family should deal with and Don Taylor should keep that part private. Then again, it is his book and his way of seeing, knowing and loving Bob Marley. Anyone who is into Bob should read this book. ~Marleighgal
Don't Support This Crook.......2003-10-28
Don Taylor was Bob Marley's manager, yes. But he also stole alot of money from Bob - he lied about concert earnings to put more money in his own pocket. Anyone who buys this book is supporting a man who stole from Robert Nesta Marley. Do you want that on your conscience? Bob was pissed when he found out about Taylor's dishonesty, and he wrote Bad Card, a song off of his masterpiece, Uprising (1980). I refuse to pay for a book that will benefit a man who stole from my idol. Don Taylor, you are a filthy thief, and your attempt to capitalize off of Bob makes me SICK.
Marley and Me.......2003-01-08
Don Taylor, the author of Marley and Me, is one of the most influential managers in the history of the music industry. Living in Jamaica in his youth, he learned his street smarts by hustling in the villages around his home. Spontaneously, he started working for the entertainment industry, helping musicians get around Jamaica and getting them whatever they pleased. Word got around that Taylor was a good manager and sooner than later, Marley and Taylor started working together, booking shows all around Jamaica while developing a strong fan base. Eventually, Bob's music was being heard all around the world, partly due to Taylor's work in and out of the United States. As things started to slow down for Bob near the end of his career, Don and Bob began to part their seperate ways on bitter paths. Bob's death to cancer ultimatly ended their relationship, yet before he died, Taylor tried to clear things up with Bob, but it was too late. Bob had passed away.
I throughly enjoyed this book. Having a view point of Bob Marley's life through the eyes of someone very close was an interesting way to understand the man and his music. This book was the best Bob Marley biography I have ever read. It clarified every aspect of his life and opened up many new doors that had been closed due to other sources that failed to offer as much information as this book had done. If your looking for a great book to unvail the life of Bob Marley, go to your local library and pick this book up.
