This is an easily readable and well balanced biography of a man whose love of the land where he was born enabled him to guide the development of the state to its economic heights of today. Tthe author is a history professor at Arizona State. He has well researched his material and had access to Goldwater's papers as well. A fine gift for Democrat or Republican or anyone interested in the development of the state.

Anderl Heckmair: My Life is a fresh translation of the newly expanded and updated classic memoir, My Life as a Mountaineer. Heckmair revisits his early childhood, recalling that he was so delicate his mother literally packed him in cotton wool for his first few years. He talks about his family's financial difficulties, culminating with his mother having to send him and his brother to an orphanage.
He relives the event that catapulted him to international acclaim-the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger, which he climbed in 1938 with Heinrich Harrer, Wiggerl Vörg, and Fritz Kasparek. The complete story of this ascent is told here, including first-person account details. The spirit that led to success on the Eiger is evident throughout Heckmair's life: as a young man he rarely had sufficient funds, but he was able to find the time and means to get to the mountains, even if it involved stealing the occasional sausage. As a professional guide, he climbed with Leni Riefenstahl, the German filmmaker best known for the 1934 Nazi propaganda film, Triumph of the Will.
Heckmair, now in his 90s, still ponders what he's going to tackle next.

If you want the true grade and able to judge the true value of a coin, you need to be able to grade according to ANA standards yourself. There is no better book than this, with clear explanations and pictures. I buy and sell a lot of coins, and I use this book many times a week and recommend it to all.

Best Book Available On Coin Grading But Could Be Better.......2006-10-14
This is an excellent resource book for grading coins, however I feel that it would be far more useful if all of the photographs used in the description of coins, were in high definition glossy color. I realize that doing so would likely double or triple the price of the book, but it would be highly useful if the photographs of coins were of the same quality as is the description of them. I gave this book 5 stars because I believe that it is the best one available on the market, however, if another publisher comes out with an all color, high definition photograph coin grading book, this one would likely take a back seat to that one.

Terrific book and an improvement over previous editions. Still, I think it is a SERIOUS oversight that 4 very commonly used grades, VF25, VF35, AU53 and AU58 are not covered.

EXCELLENT book for those trying to learn to grade there coins. I HIGHLY reccomend this item. Details every grade, and what characteristics it take for the coin to make the grade.
The Bible for coin collectors.......2005-10-13
This book, simply put, is an absolute neccessity for all coin collectors. With Kenneth Bresset editing the book and Q. David Bowers narrating it, the book has to be awesome. It has, among many other things, The basic ANA Grading techniques, Key to official ANA Grading Standards: Circulation Strike Coins; Key to official ANA Grading Standards: Proof Coins, Advanced Grading Techniques, A closer focus on certain aspects of grading and the official ANA grading standards for each coin type. From AG-3 to MS-70. It also has notes that warn you about different things to look for in certain types of coins. Buy this book, you definately will not be disappointed.

Wow, the reviewer above, Mr. Briss, is harsh on this book. Dude, did the author kick your cat or something, lord. This book is not the second coming, granted, but it is a nice book, with well presented images and interesting, if not scholarly text, I really dont know what Mr. Briss expected, but honestly this is not a bad book for the price, I mean if you are into this sort of thing which frankly, I am. One star for this this book is obtuse and mean spirted, and frankly, just plain nonsensical. It's really a three star book, but i gave it four because, the old queen above gave it such a thrashing.
Nice coffee table book.......2005-08-15
I bought this for my husband (he requested it specifically) as a gift. He is very happy with it. Note that we enjoy it more as a coffee table book than as deep research material!
Pretty disappointing.......2004-11-12
Gregory Long writes in his introduction to this new book that he aims to update the Eberlein & Hubbard classic "Historic Houses of the Hudson River." He misses that mark. He discusses fewer houses than do Eberlein & Hubbard, and substitutes pedantry for insight. A first-time author, his text lurches from the slangy to the stilted. Long does better with the photography. Some of his pictures are very pretty.

This book does not do the homes it features justice. The images are depressing, they are all bad b/w on cheap paper, other than the sickly color image on the cover. I purchased two copies, one was to be gift, but it was so bad I gave them something else.

Help for Homeschooling Parents.......2001-01-28
I am recently wrestling with concerns about an almost 13-year old, and all the changes I've seen from his getting into the teen years. Including the ideas of quitting a lot of activities he's been doing in the past. Because we are homeschooling, it is even more important that we learn to work with each other and find common ground. We are going to use this book to discuss homeschooling and the option of going to school, and the pros and cons of both. I needed to find ways to support his growing independence. And I found several clear and practical ways in this book.
I talked with friends and read about 6 books in the library on this subject, but the most informative, practical and encouraging with regard to homeschooling is one called "The Influential Parent: How to be the Person Your Teen Really Needs," by David Damico. I plan on buying it. It is not a homeschooling book but could be. All parents will benefit from reading this book. It is not so school-focused as other parenting books are but instead deals with working with the teen's own interests. It helps parents work with drawing out the teen's interests to avoid that "I'm bored" syndrome. Includes chapters on getting your teen really involved, developing a "limited partnership"(where the parent retains the main role in guiding but allows a partnership to develop with the teen involved in decision making) , looking at your own energy needs and setting limits (to avoid burnout, a big issue with homeschooling parents) , becoming someone your teenager will follow and have fun with, why parents meet with resistance, why adolescence is draining on parents, eight ways to influence your child, coaching instead of policing, using respect to develop as a role model for a budding adult. This is a respectful book and full of advice and insight I haven't heard other places.

This book is a great service to music lovers. It corrects the errors and fills in the lacunae from Menuhin's own masterful "Unfinished Journey". For me, as the father of two musical daughters, it was helpful in providing greater perspective on what Menuhin's precocity looked up from his parents' point of view, and the decisions they made to allow its expression. Exhaustive note, and each chapter contains a list of recommended recordings, so one can follow along in the musical journey if one chooses.
