        Book Description

At 3:58 in the morning of June 5, 2002, Ed and Lois Smart awoke to the sound of their nine-year-old daughter Mary Katherine’s frightened voice. “She’s gone. Elizabeth is gone.” At first they thought she was having a bad dream about her older sister, but Mary Katherine’s seeming bad dream would quickly become their worst nightmare. Their daughter Elizabeth was gone.

They were not sure why the media picked up on Elizabeth’s story, but after their daughter was kidnapped she became the whole world’s daughter. After nine months of a strange, hard, sometimes rewarding, but mostly painful journey, Elizabeth was miraculously returned to them. Just as millions throughout the world had grieved for her loss, now they celebrated her safe return.

In Bringing Elizabeth Home, Ed and Lois share the pain of every parent’s worst fear: “What would I do if my child was taken from me?” They also share a story of great hope, strong faith, and trust in God. The Smart family had always been devoted to their Mormon faith, but through their terribly painful experience they gained a tremendous inner strength, which became the key to their survival. They write, “Having our daughter back home, in our arms, is nothing short of a miracle. It is the ultimate proof that God answers prayers. Granted, sometimes the answer is not the one we pray for, but still it remains an answer. We feel truly blessed that He answered our prayers the way we had hoped for, although we realize, regretfully, that this is not always the outcome in kidnapping cases. We have met so many families with missing children and we’ve seen how deep their pain goes . . . But what we hope to convey through our journey of faith and hope is that with a strong belief in God, all things are possible. Miracles do happen.”

In the end, the Smarts’ story brings one point poignantly home--nothing is more important in this world than family. Not money. Not work. Not a fancy new car or an expensive, big house. Family, the prayers of so many friends and strangers, and trust in God are what got them through this experience--and having survived, they have no doubt that they can persevere in any situation as long as those three things are in their lives. Though their story is filled with many incredible twists and turns, they never lost focus on what was important: bringing Elizabeth home.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-06-13

The first time I read this book, I was watching it all happen. i'ts like I was invisible. I admire Elizabeth for having the guts to do what she did. I would have fought back, but she did it the safe way, she didn't resist. Reading this book, you feel like you know the Smart family. I pray for all Missing Children everywhere. Elizabeth is the luckiest girl in the world! Mary Katharine was so cool and collected. she is amazing too. read this book!

3 out of 5 stars Bringing Elizabeth Home.......2005-03-07

Bringing Elizabeth Home was a heartwarming story about Elizabeth's tragic journey. I would of preferred it if Elizabeth told the story rather then Elizabeth's parents: Ed and Lois Smart. But I think that there were rumors going around about Elizabeth's story, and they just wanted to tell the world what really happened.
They are a really strong family for having to go through Elizabeth's kidnapping. Escpecially her sister (Mary-Katherine) for having to see her sister getting kidnapped, and not being able to do anything to save her sister. I enjoyed reading about the Smart's sad but also happy story.

4 out of 5 stars The subtitle says it all, really. .......2005-01-09

The subtitle says it all, really. Readers expecting to learn details of Elizabeth Smart's captivity should look elsewhere; there are no such revelations in this book. Her parents leave it to Elizabeth to tell that story herself, someday, if she chooses to do so. This is Ed and Lois Smart telling their own story, and that of their family's other members, during the months between Elizabeth's kidnapping and her return.

Faith played a huge role in keeping the Smart family's hope alive during those months, so it's natural for them to speak of it often. For some readers this may give their book a "preachy" quality, while for others it may strike exactly the right note. True crime this is not - it's more like a series of essays, sharing each parent's feelings while walking us through the events as they remember them.

Worth reading, but oddly dry for all the material's tremendous emotional impact. I came away feeling that someone - authors, ghostwriter, editor(s), I couldn't be sure who - worked so hard at avoiding sensationalism that the effort backfired. 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.

4 out of 5 stars A story of faith and hope..........2004-09-16

As the Smart family has said, they wrote this book themselves because they knew their story would be told, and they simply wanted to ensure that the story was truly being told from their perspective. Anyone who claims that this book was written for profit is off his/her rocker. The Smarts are a very wealthy family who had no need to profit from their nightmare.

As far as suggesting that they were hiding a pregnancy, congratulations on your math skills, but pregnancy doesn't show for at least four months. Are you suggesting that they kept her away just for fun for the remainder of the time? What a preposterous notion! Additionally, while the LDS faith teaches abstinence, it also has an social services system which includes counseling, and if needed, placing babies for adoption, showing that they do recognize that unmarried people have babies and that they are ready to help.

Lastly, my largest commendation to the Smart family. This experience was a test of faith that no family would ever want to endure. Ed and Lois Smart took a terrible situation and used it to rally for the Amber Alert, and turned their nightmare into a blessing for other families. There were few that believed that Elizabeth would return alive. The Smarts gave the example that nobody has the right to question another's faith.

        3 out of 5 stars Stolen Innocence.......2004-07-23

As I read your comments and after reading this book myself, I wanted to suggest that you read another book that is about a much less publicized kidnapping of a Mormon girl some 30 years ago. The book is Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story. I found that Stolen Innocence took a more realistic approach to a bizarre and terrifying experience. Perhaps the Smarts weren't quite ready to share the complete experience, beyond just the justifiable gratitude they felt for Elizabeth's return. The author of Stolen Innocence is not afraid to takes a look at her own failings and weaknesses during the tragic time of her daughter's kidnapping and the years following the ordeal. It looks at the family's ignorance and victimization, but more importantly aslo their hope and strength. I highly recommend it. I recently saw the subject/victim of the "Stolen Innocence" book on Good Morning America and could hardly believe her story, so I had to buy the book and read it for myself!

                              Book Description

The face of scrapbooking is about to get a youthful, cutting-edge makeover! Despite the craft’s popularity, all the books flooding the market focus on the same images of weddings, baby showers, and Little League. So where’s a scrapbooking rebel to go? To Scrap City of course. With its edgy and artistic points of reference, it fills the gap to reach those urban hipsters, downtown secretaries, big city divas, and small-town nonconformists. Along with a basics section and scrapping tips, is the pièce de résistance: a gallery of real-life scrapbook pages from people of all stripes, from the single mom to the skate kid. These contributors celebrate their panty collection; reveal why single is fun; list their tattoos; and, yes—even redefine the baby shower.

Paul Gambino has taught screenwriting at the School of Visual Arts, was a production consultant and writer for NBC, and was Creative Director for the magazines Gener8 and Ultra. He has spent endless nights in NYC’s hottest clubs; years as a punk on London’s King’s Road; and college days with Keith Haring and Jean Michael Basquiat. Now a father, he has a special appreciation for time’s fleeting nature and how important it is to preserve memories for yourself and others.

5 out of 5 stars Not your average scrapbooking book!.......2006-11-05

I loved this book because it provided a glance into lives of scrapbookers who are not the stereotypical "soccer mom" type of scrapbookers. It was truly a breath of fresh air to see scrapbooking pages from strippers, a woman in a rock band, tattoos, and a woman in a burlesque show. Another great thing about this book is that not only does it have a wide variety of scrappers showcased, but it also relies on creativity of the scrappers rather than "cutesy" embellishments and other mass produced scrapbooking products. I would definitely recommend this book because you can see layouts from "conventional" scrappers and the not-so-conventional scrappers all in one book.

This book is really fun and funny to read, and opens creative doors in your mind. IT's time for a scrap booking book that isn't about "beautiful people" living in perfect suburbs! I like the different lay out and art ideas. My critique is that I wished for better "how-to's". This is a compilation of pages and suggestions from the scrappers who made the pages, and their stories are interesting. The pages are not shown step by step, like in other scrap book books, and some additional guidance of achieving the art effects would have been good. Overall, an inspiration to make scrapbooks that are about more than my own face or my kid's first tooth ;-)

5 out of 5 stars YES! Finally an idea book that resonates with my soul..........2006-09-08

I am a non-traditional scrapbooker. Don't fit the typical scrapbooker demographic whatsoever. I live in a huge city, have no kids, eclectic interests, and somewhat of an alternative lifestyle. I tried, and tried, and tried to get excited about other idea books, magazines, etc... but could never really relate to the layouts and themes featured within. I saw "Scrap City" on a rack of idea books in a store, opened it, and was immediately taken with the colors, the themes, the textures! And more than anything, the way I could totally relate to the themes of the layouts and other projects. Finally an idea book that resonated with my soul and validated my love of scrapbooking by showing projects and layouts I could truly relate to. Aside from scrapbook layouts, the book features other projects, including handmade books, altered art, and more. At the back of the book there is some good information on the basics of scrapbooking, techniques and tools and the like. And ideas on how to inspire your creativity. Definately the book I will be referring back to most often to spark my creativity and inspire new ideas.

Remember those really cool kids in high school? I mean the REALLY cool ones, the ones who weren't afraid to do their own thing and go their own way? Here's your chance to peek at some of their scrapbooks!

What I really like about this book is that the artists aren't concerned with being "on-trend". The lay-outs are cool and vary so much from artist to artist, it refreshes your brain after seeing the magazines where it's hard to distinuish one artist from another. The variety inspires me to do things my way and encourages me to shake things up a bit.

                              Bravo!

(Disclaimer: If in high school your main aim was to be exactly like everyone else, this might not be the book for you. But you should give it a try, you just might see something you like. :-)

                              Book Description

Baillie Scott’s long career spanned the years from 1892 to 1939 – several ages in architecture. He may be considered a third-generation Arts and Crafts architect, who joined the movement after it had become well established and took its ideas to everyman. He invented a new type of small house by opening up a plan around a spacious house-place or hall and extending the interior into the garden. These airy little houses, with their intimate alcoves and sunny verandas, captured William Morris’s vision: ‘Simplicity of life, even the barest, is not a misery, but the very foundation of refinement: a sanded floor and whitewashed walls, and the green trees, and flowery meads… will turn all “operatives” into workmen, into artists, into men.’

It is clear that Baillie Scott made a significant contribution to twentieth-century architecture. The  main themes of his agenda – the development of alternative small houses for the average householder; open and spacious planning, continuity of internal and external space, exploration of the rich textures of materials – are as important today as they were in the early years of the century. The work of Baillie Scott effectively ensured an important and enduring relevance for Morris’s legacy.

This book includes many newly commissioned photographs of Baillie Scott’s houses, as well as original drawing and new research. By looking at his writing and revisiting his buildings – some previously unknown – it makes available the work of an important architect of the Arts and Crafts movement. It reveals for the first time the beauty of Baillie Scott’s architectural works and the fascinating breadth of his theory and practice.

"You can't help but keep turning the pages, wondering how it will all turn out: and Walker's accumulated readings of Liszt's music have to be taken seriously indeed."--D. Kern Holoman, New York Review of Books "A conscientious scholar passionate about his subject. Mr. Walker makes the man and his age come to life. These three volumes will be the definitive work to which all subsequent Liszt biographies will aspire." --Harold C. Schonberg, Wall Street Journal

"What distinguishes Walker from Liszt's dozens of earlier biographers is that he is equally strong on the music and the life. A formidable musicologist with a lively polemical style, he discusses the composer's works with greater understanding and clarity than any previous biographer. And whereas many have recycled the same erroneous, often damaging information, Walker has relied on his own prodigious, globe-trotting research, a project spanning twenty-five years. The result is a textured portrait of Liszt and his times without rival." --Elliot Ravetz, Time

"The prose is so lively that the reader is often swept along by the narrative. . . . This three-part work . . . is now the definitive work on Liszt in English and belongs in all music collections."--Library Journal

This is the third and final volume of Alan Walker's lengthy and in-depth biography of Liszt. It so happens to be the third volume I purchase. This is the most informative and entertaining biography I've ever read (including footnotes and the appendices). Mr. Walker goes beyond the call of duty (or defines it), by having done extensive travels during his years researching for this masterwork on the master of Romantic music, Franz Liszt. He was even granted access to the Vatican's Secret Archive to study what happened during Liszt and Carolyne's struggle to get married.
Anyone truly interested in reading the definitive biography on Liszt cannot consider anything else but these three volumes by Mr. Walker. I came upon them by chance, and now do I consider myself very lucky. He has since the publication of the third volume released some complimentary books, with more specific topics and correspondence of the time. Alan Walker is indeed The Liszt erudite. Period!

5 out of 5 stars an inspiring and scholarly book.......1998-05-30

I have just finished the reading of all three volumes of Walker's Liszt biography and it is like the composer is in front of me, alive and awe-inspiring. Walker's fortes are the uncanny ability to revive the atmosphere of the 19th Century and its relevance to Liszt's compositional frame of mind. He is also extremely thorough on his research of primary sources, which leads to some unexpected conclusions about the composer's personality and creativity. As it is with many other biographies of men who seem to be one step up on the ladder of intellectual output, creative energy and forward looking imagination, the author seems to be a bit too keen on justifying his failures. To him, the object of his admiration can do no wrong and one has to go to the pains of blaming everyone else for what happens of negative in his life. Liszt had obvious shortcomings as a composer if we compare him to his contemporary Chopin for instance, but the all-embracing nature of his interests were surely unique and constitute themselves reason enough to attract one's admiration. One doesn't need to play down the bad aspects. The biographer has obviously to admire the object of his study, but he doesn't need to be his posthumous PR. Having said that, one cannot be but overwhelmed by the sheer ammount of information and by the delicious style with which it is presented. In fact, it is difficult to put the the books down inthe first place, and upon reaching the end one feels like forgetting it only to have the pleasure of reading it again. Walker's tremendous stature as a scholar and Liszt's absolutely super-human productivity and larger-than-life personality are an inspiration to anyone who feels that one has to do something out of one's life. It is impossible to read thiese magnificent books and remain stuck in petty pursuits. They give us a measure of the miracle each human life is.

5 out of 5 stars Finest biography of Liszt you will ever read.......1997-02-13

"Franz Liszt: The Final Years" is compelling and at times, heartbreaking. It reads like an epic novel. I was literally catapulted through the book and couldn't stop reading it, yet I didn't want it to end. Walker does a magnificent job of breathing life into 19th century Europe with intimate details of the lives of its most innovative geniuses, Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt. I've read all three volumes of this biography, but the final volume was most devastating in its power. It's a moving tribute to the charisma and warmth of Franz Liszt, one of the most fascinating, brilliant men who ever lived
