Anyone who has worked the door knows that this man knows his stuff. Mr Thompson aka. Geoff, writes honestly and holds little back from the reader so it certainly is not a book if your idea of a Saturday night is watching "the late show" with a bowl of chips and a coke. This book like Geoff's others is an exceptional read and I couldn't put it down (reading three of his books in two days). For anyone who works the door read this book,as you will relate to his insight, his "study" of this profession through immense experience. Thank god we don't all encounter the level of violence he had. If you don't work the door but always wanted to be a doorman and go around telling us how we have the greatest job, Geoff's book is for you, to set you straight. This book pulls no punches (pun intended)...great read.

      Book Description

This book serves as both an armchair guide for learning about and enjoying the lore of Oaxaca's folk art, as well as a hands-on guide for those who plan to visit the region and develop their own folk art itineraries.

A mother-daughter team introduces the spectrum of Oaxacan folk arts: ceramics, textiles, woodcarving, metal work, miniatures and toys, jewelry, candles, basketry and dried flower crafts. A chapter on the Day of the Dead highlights its profound influence on many of these classes of folk art.

Celebrating the transmission of artistic traditions from generation to generation in some of the most talented artist families in Oaxaca, 87 outstanding artists belonging to 44 families are featured. Their works, crafted from natural materials, incorporate unique blends of indigenous myths with ancient patterns and techniques, many of which have been preserved for hundreds of years.

Biographical and technical information is illustrated with over 500 glorious color photographs of the artists and their works. A useful resource section includes a list of shops and markets in Oaxaca City and 12 of its surrounding pueblos, maps locating the artists' homes, family trees, and a glossary of frequently-used terms that apply to these folk arts.

        2 out of 5 stars Frustrated.......2007-07-11

Now I get it! I got her book, Beaded Crochet Designs, after I got this DVD and discovered that this DVD is merely a selection of projects from the real book, without the creepy pictures of little girls with too much makeup that are way too reminiscent of poor little JonBinet Ramsey. I found this DVD book quite frustrating. The CD bonus material will not play at all on my computer.
Her demonstration of crochet basics is a very good example of how to crochet with beads but there is not a bit on how to set the piece up, i.e. how long the thread should be, how to string all the beads on the thread first before beginning to crochet, etc. I liked the simple sample piece and would have liked directions on how to make it,the full step by step, but oh no, she wants me to make a one color pearlescent piece instead...boring and frustrating. This is not well thought out. The section on supplies, tools, etc. is good and helpful but again not enough for more stars!

5 out of 5 stars beaded crochet with Ann Benson.......2007-03-08

I really enjoyed this dvd book lesson on crocheting. I have read many books on how to crochet but this gave me hands on experience to view while I was crocheting beads. It was easy following Ann as she spoke through each step. Being a teacher I know that everyone does not learn the same way and this dvd finally helped me to understand crocheting with beads.

        4 out of 5 stars Finally - a visual how-to for bead crochet ropes!.......2007-02-12

I've been trying to master the technique of beaded crochet ropes for quite some time now. I'm a visual learner and needed help so when I saw Ann Benson's DVD I scooped it right up and am so glad I did. Her instruction is clear and the camera shots of her crocheting are very easy to follow.

Like other reviewers, I also had problems navigating the DVD (hence the 4 stars). The red dot that is supposed to appear in the main menu does not appear. But once I played the DVD on my laptop I was able to manually access the chapters. Not the most convenient thing - there must be a glitch somewhere - but it was well worth it to receive the instruction (and patterns).

While this is not a top-of-the-line Hollywood production, it more than serves its purpose and I cannot thank Ms. Benson enough for putting this together.

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-10-03

Already owning one of Ann Benson's bead crochet books, I was excited at the prospect of a new one. The fact that it was a DVD was not clear when ordering. I was still excited to see what was new, but found the DVD to be very poor quality, and at this point does not work at all.

Leafing throught the few printed pages that accompany the set, most of the patterns are simply rewrites from her earlier book.

This purchase was very disappointing, along with a waste of my money.

        1 out of 5 stars It's not a book!.......2006-09-17

Like the other reviewers, I was astounded when the CD/DVD arrived. It is not very well done - you cannot easily move from chapter to chapter and I am not sure that I want to anyway. It does not contain the basic information I wanted - I feel cheated.

5 out of 5 stars Quick reference guide for busy parents.......2004-10-26

Everyone knows that the best parenting advice comes from other parents. That's what makes this book so helpful: The editors of Parents magazine have pulled together tips and ideas from parents into a easy to use guide that is designed to allow you to quickly find suggestions for dealing with whatever parenting problem you are struggling with right now. A lot of the ideas are basic common sense, but it's very handy to have all the ideas in one place, which is why the book is worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars A Compilation of Great Advice for ALL Parents........2000-03-29

Being an avid Parents magazine subscriber, I turn through their pages every month searching for advice from parents across the country. It's almost like sitting in a room, sharing your best ideas with hundreds of other parents. Although Parents magazine features this every month, it's amazing that they've created an entire BOOK about this useful information. At least one in five of these tips could work for you. Creativity from around the nation combines into these pages to provide you with unforgettable hints and tips to make parenting a LITTLE easier and more fun for the kids. I've learned a lot in the past two years from just other parents' advice and strategies. It also helps you stimulate alternative ways of disciplining your children. I recommend this book to all parents willing to learn a little more about themselves and their children. Instead of arguing and cleaning up, you'll spend more quality time with the little people you love.

Village Voice reporter Karen Houppert intrepidly attacks the laissez-faire attitude of many "personal products" companies with The Curse, and her investigations should rabble-rouse women to action. Most notable is her pointed discussion of dioxin, a class A (most toxic of the toxins) carcinogen, and how studies have shown traces of it in tampons from every major U.S. manufacturer. Dioxin is a chemical that's been given "zero tolerance" status by the Environmental Protection Agency because of its strongly suspected link "to lower sperm counts in men, a higher probability of endometriosis in women, and a depressed immune system in both." However, Houppert quotes tampon spokespeople who deny any problem, even though a Food and Drug Administration memo mentions that "the risk of dioxin in tampons 'can be quite high.'" This is exceptionally creepy when you consider that the average American woman spends 36 years menstruating, and if she uses tampons, she'll eventually use more than 11,000 of them.

Houppert's amusement with the approaches used by Tambrands and other makers of "female protection" is entertaining at times, but overall, it is purposefully acerbic, especially when it comes to marketing and the damage she claims it has wreaked on women's self-image. Houppert says these corporations have created a pervasive "culture of concealment" surrounding menstruation, perpetuated by advertising and single-sex "puberty education" classes in schools (which, she points out, are usually sponsored by such companies as Procter & Gamble, maker of the infamous Rely tampon that was implicated in 38 toxic shock syndrome-related deaths in 1980). While it seems comical now to see Tampax ads from the 1920s claiming to "permit daintiness at all times" and the campaign of the 1990s that asserts "No one will ever know you've got your period," Houppert successfully argues that the advertisements add a cruel sense of mystery and shame to menstruation. According to a survey from the 1980s that Houppert found during her research, more than 30 percent of adults questioned "thought women should cut down on their physical activities while menstruating" and an even higher percentage of teenage girls didn't know what was happening to them during their first period. And we wonder why teen pregnancy rates are so high.

"Because ideas about menstruation tie into prevailing notions that women's bodies are dangerously permeable," Houppert writes, "they become a part of the controlling myths our culture has spun to manipulate our perceptions of ourselves and our sexuality. Menstrual etiquette is an element of a woman's experience that contributes to this disorienting effect." She points out that a woman is more likely to tell a coworker about an affair than walk down the hall to the restroom with a tampon in hand. Her book is a revelation, a brilliant analysis of corporate influence and personal shame and how both are detrimental to the health--physical and mental--of women. --Erica Jorgensen

              Book Description

A provocative look at the way our culture dealswith menstruation.

The Curse examines the culture of concealment that surrounds menstruation and the devastating impact such secrecy has on women's physical and psychological health. Karen Houppert combines reporting on the potential safety problems of sanitary products--such as dioxin-laced tampons--with an analysis of the way ads, movies, young-adult novels, and women's magazines foster a "menstrual etiquette" that leaves women more likely to tell their male colleagues about an affair than brazenly carry an unopened tampon down the hall to the bathroom. From the very beginning, industry-generated instructional films sketch out the parameters of acceptable behavior and teach young girls that bleeding is naughty, irrepressible evidence of sexuality. In the process, confident girls learn to be self-conscious teens.

And the secrecy has even broader implications. Houppert argues that industry ad campaigns have effectively stymied consumer debate, research, and safety monitoring of the sanitary-protection industry. By telling girls and women how to think and talk about menstruation, the mostly male-dominated media have set a tone that shapes women's experiences for them, defining what they are allowed to feel about their periods, their bodies, and their sexuality.

              5 out of 5 stars oddly enough.......2004-05-05

I happened to pick this book out of the stack of books I have been planning to read the other day - with my eyes closed. How amazingly coincidental that I picked "The Curse" when I just started my period for this month.

Anyway, it's a good read - I especially like the euphenisms on the endpapers, most of which I never heard of in my life. I grew up in a house with 5 other females, so there were no cute little names for "that time of the month". As a matter of fact, when I got my first period, I was sick as a dog and my dad said "Now you are a woman" and I told him "If this is what being a woman is all about, you can keep it."

M's Houppert explores the whole feminine hygiene industry, bringing up such bad memories as the "Rely" tampon (remember toxic shock syndrome?) and how dioxin is used in creating the various napkins / tampons most women use at sometime or another.

I found this an extremely interesting book. From the extensive quotes from parts of Anne Frank's diaries to the MUM (Museum of Menstruation, located in New Carollton, Maryland and run by Harry Finley, M's Houppert's extensive research makes this book worth a spot on your bookshelf. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond in the Rough.......2003-03-11

I found Houpperts book on a dusty old shelf in a local Surplus store. I m not sure how it had gotten there, but upon reading a little into it I was sure it was worth the dollar it was selling for. I am one Chapter in and already she has changed my life. She provides astonishing information regarding tampons: what exactly is in them, what the industry hides, and what affects the secrets have had on womens lives. I promptly threw out all my tampons after finishing her first chapter! This book is not only for women, but those concerned with the environment, capitalism and how they all interconnect to make a horrifically clear picture of our socially accepted profit over people patterns. I found it for a dollar...you may not be so lucky...but there are somethings worth knowing that you can't put a price on.

5 out of 5 stars Read this Book!.......2003-03-04

I'm also upset at the biased review written by the author of the other 'Curse.' Ms. Houppert's issues with both dioxin and capitalism fit perfectly into the book. The childbirth story was not only not long, but it related to The Curse's themes. And even as a life-long Judy Blume fan, I can honestly say her writing is pretty flat. It's clear your books are completely different, aside from the title, and I would never read your book based on that petty review. Not everyone is looking for a "gossipy history" of menstruation, some people are interested in facts.

Anyway, not only was this 'Curse' engaging and interesting, it really made me angry about the way menstruation is treated in our society. Another reader mentioned that she felt no anger because they were providing products that women need, to say the least I DID feel angry, and much more informed, after reading about the way companies have, as the quote on the back says: "taken the natural workings of women's bodies...are medicalized, sanitized, taken from us and sold back to us at a profit." This is really a must for all women.

5 out of 5 stars amazon needs to edit reviews.......2000-07-14

It seems a little unfair that Amazon would allow a writer of a previous book called the Curse--who obviously has an axe to grind against Houppert's witty, thorough and intelligent writing and sees it as competition against the sales of her own volume--to write such a mean-spirited diatribe in the "customer reviews" section. Even more bizarre that Amazon actually allows Ms. Tobin to actually REVIEW HER OWN BOOK on that book's page (giving it five stars, naturally).

As someone who has in the past taken the customer reviews seriously, it makes me really wonder whether anyone is minding the store.

Regarding Houppert's book: It's good. Buy it. Ignore Tobin. She's got a major chip on her shoulder. Listen to Alix Kates Shulman and Peggy Orenstein--they're better (and fairer) judges.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but did not live up to my expectations.......1999-09-05

Revealing work about the feminine protection industry but I couldn't really understand Houppert's indignation with the industry (except for the dioxin problem...) They are selling a product that we need! I'm so happy we no longer need to use those disgusting belts. I'm pretty happy with stick on pads. I've tried reusables but I think the industry is here to stay. I don't have a problem with that. I was expecting much more though, about how women are "The Other", which Houppert does talk about but not to the extent that I would have liked. I found the book easy to read and stay involved in, but it just as easily could have been an article in the Village Voice (which it was originally). Another reader (the author of the other Curse book) complained about Houppert's long story about her birth. I didn't think the story was that long, and was appropriately included. Houppert admits that she herself is very much influenced by our male dominated society and it shows in her writing.

                "HANNELORE, YOUR PAPA IS DEAD."

In the spring of 1942 Hannelore received a letter from Mama at her school in Berlin, Germany--Papa had been arrested and taken to a concentration camp. Six weeks later he was sent home; ashes in an urn.

Soon another letter arrived. "The Gestapo has notified your brothers and me that we are to be deported to the East--whatever that means." Hannelore knew: labor camps, starvation, beatings...How could Mama and her two younger brothers bear that? She made a decision: She would go home and be deported with her family. Despite the horrors she faced in eight labor and concentration camps, Hannelore met and fell in love with a Polish POW named Dick Hillman.

Oskar Schindler was their one hope to survive. Schindler had a plan to take eleven hundred Jews to the safety of his new factory in Czechoslovakia. Incredibly both she and Dick were added to his list. But survival was not that simple. Weeks later Hannelore found herself, alone, outside the gates of Auschwitz, pushed toward the smoking crematoria.

I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree is the remarkable true story of one young woman's nightmarish coming-of-age. But it is also a story about the surprising possibilities for hope and love in one of history's most brutal times.

The book I will Plant You A Lilac Tree by Laura Hillman is an excellent book. I would most likely recommend it to girls though. I would recommend it to girls because the book talks about Hannelore getting sexually assaulted and other things like her falling in love with Bernard (Dick) Hillman. I would also recommend this book because it talks about true fact that happened during the Holocaust. This book has been the best book I've ever read. One reason it is would be because she expresses her feelings about the people she loved and lost, but also how she hated what was happening to the Jewish religion. All in all if you're looking for a good read I think you should read the book I will Plant You A Lilac Tree.

                5 out of 5 stars A Brave Book about a Terrifying Time.......2006-04-18

This is one of the best books I've ever read on any subject. It was compelling reading--I, too, couldn't put it down.
I love its honesty. Nothing was left out of this book. And yet it is not sensational or graphic. It's an honest, humane, and brave book about a terrifying time.
I'm so grateful to the author for writing it.

                5 out of 5 stars A Moving Story.......2006-03-13

This is the first-person account of Hannelore Wolff, a survivor of Nazi death camps and a Jew on Schindler's List. The story chronicles Hannelore's time when she leaves safety to accompany her mother and brothers to first a Jewish ghetto and then to a concentration camp in an effort to keep the family together. Hannelore then spends the next three years living day to day as she survives the disease, death, and horrors of the Holocaust. Her story is by turns one of luck, faith, and perseverance as she ultimately finds herself on Oskar Schindler's famous list and thus brought to the relative safety of his factory. Along the way Hannelore meets and falls in love with her future husband, Dick. Mrs. Hillman gives us a chilling account of a desperate time and helps us all to remember those who should not be forgotten. A tremendous story that will touch you deeply. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Stimulating Debate of the Merits of Spielberg's Film.......2001-03-09

Perhaps unfortunately, many of the essays in this fine collection would have to fall under the category of univocal Spielberg-bashing. The director is berated by a chorus of academics for his documentary-style authoritarianism in his approach to representing the story of Oskar Schindler and the Schindler Jews. What merits the movie does have are, by and large, swept under the carpet in the interest of pointing out its glaring faults and moments of irresponsible over-reaching. This robs the debate of a good measure of balance, but the wealth of different critical perspectives brought to bear on the discussion more than makes up for any lack of diplomacy.

The book's greatest stengths are just this sort of breadth--there are essays here by film experts, historians, literary theorists and other academic luminaries, most notably Geoffrey Hartmann and Omer Bartov. Another virtue of Loshitzky's collection is that the reader comes away with a much better grasp of the larger debate over representing the Holocaust. Essays point repeatedly to Claude Lanzmann's interview-style documentary as an ideal form, but the more careful essays admit that this is not the version most viewers would sit through, as it's too long, too slow, etc.

There are some shocking revelations, too, like things Spielberg has said in interviews that should curdle the blood of even his most vociferous supporters. He compares his trials of being rich and famous and recognizable with the suffering of victims of the Holocaust, and one wonders what on earth he could possibly have been thinking.

Those tidbits aside, though, the most useful, convincing and durable essay here is, in my opinion, the balanced assessment by Bartov, a Holocaust historian, who candidly admits that Spielberg's triumphalism and hero-narrative are terribly misplaced in this corner of history. Unlike the other essayists here, though, Bartov challenges critics to focus more on the positive accomplishments of the film, and especially the fact that it has raised overall awareness of the tragedy in extraordinary fashion. This must not be forgotten in a judgment of the film, he argues, since it is likely (and he writes this, of course, before the breakout success of Benigni's "Life is Beautiful") the only Holocaust film most people--and certainly most Americans--will ever care to see.

While certain of the pieces cater more obviously to an academic crowd well versed in the ongoing debate and most current scholarship on the topic of the Holocaust, the book in general is quite accessible to more mainstream audiences who wish to see Spielberg's version of the Shoah challenged in an often very productive way. I highly recommend this book.
