Book Description
Midlife summations by more than 500 members of the Harvard Class of 75 on the occasion of their 25th reunion.
At the time of their 25th reunion in the year 2000, members of the Harvard Class of 75 were uniquely poised to reflect on their first quarter century out of college, which happened to coincide with the last quarter century of the millennium. Published here with the participation of contributing graduates, independent of the university, these essays offer a fascinating perspective on life trajectories, changing mores, evolving priorities, and issues of race, class, and gender as seen and lived by graduates of one of the country's premier universities.
With a substantial analytic essay by Pulitzer Prize-winning Harvard psychiatrist Robert Coles, "before" and "after" photos, and fascinating data on career choices, marital choices, and avocational interests, The Class of 75 will take its place next to Michael Medved's What Really Happened to the Class of 65 and George Vaillant's classic study of Harvard graduates, Adaptation to Life, as a seminal longitudinal look at a landmark era in the words of the people who lived through it.

Book Description
Accounting Ace 911 Volume 2 is the second volume of a two-volume step-by-step introduction to basic accounting. The text is designed to be both comprehensive and user-friendly, and is frequently used as a self-study text in online basic accounting courses. It is also an excellent self-study review and reference resource. Like volume 1, this text also includes numerous exercises and problems with solutions, special cumulative tests with solutions tables that identify weak and strong knowledge areas, and vocabulary reviews. It also continues the basic math review. Glossary and index.

Highly Recommand Accounting Ace 911.......2003-07-01
This is a really great self-study book. Although I was an "A" student in my accounting principles courses, I never did feel like I really understood everything I needed to understand, and now that some time has gone by and I am thinking about studying some finance and banking classes.
Accounting Ace 911 was a very good review. The moment I started reading this book, I could hardly pull myself away from it. It made the basic concepts in accounting very clear in an easy-to-understand manner. This is a great study book for starters who want to get some basic accounting training.
Also, English is a second language for me, and this book was easy to read, but not over-simplified. This is one the things I liked the most.

Finally an accounting book that I understood.Thank you Gregory Mostyn for writing a book that is easy to understand the accounting foreign language--I was hopeless. I'm so glad that there are educators like you to help those of us who are not the natural "accountant brain." After work, my brain is so exhausted. your method of teaching helped me get through my intimidation of accounting. I wish more educators could teach like you in our fast-paced society--THANKS SO MUCH!

Accounting Ace 911 Volumes 1 and 2: Good for What Ails You.......2003-02-28
I provide content and training services; so I am keenly aware when content is helping or thwarting my learning. Accounting Ace 911 came to my attention because I needed a book that covered accounting basics, completely and clearly--especially bookkeeping procedures. I now have volumes 1 and 2 on my desktop, and am spending a few hours a week using them.
The Accounting Ace books are big but not scary. They are big because in addition to content, the books include case studies, exercises with answers, and reviews of basic math. The books also use large fonts and lots of white space (great for making notes!).
The books are well-organized, using learning objectives as a roadmap. The table of contents (TOC) and index are too thin for me, but this problem is alleviated by detailed TOCs at the front of major sections, and scanning that is made easier by "sign-post" headings in the left margin. It also helps that the content is thorough enough that my questions are answered as soon as or shortly after I think of them.
Though the primary target audience for the books appears to be college students, anyone who needs a "leg up" on basic accounting will find Accounting Ace 911 is helpful. The style and tone are friendly, not at all academic, and even humorous at times (there are cartoons at unexpected moments, just when you need a grin). For me, the books make it easier to learn about the ugly, painful subject of accounting.

banknote book.......2007-01-10
Brilliant, could not do without it- the best on the market without a doubt.
WPC Catalog Review.......2005-10-04
This book is the third volume in a line series dedicated to paper money collecting. This one particularly concentrates on the banknotes issued by central banks all over the World from 1961 onwards. The book is "The reference" used by all collectors and dealers alike. Thus, it is a must in order to keep uptodate with market prices and with the current issues. Unfortunately, it has mistakes and sometimes it lacks continuity with its counterpart (vol. 2) which is not issued annualy like this one. Nevertheless, if you are involved in paper money collecting, owning this book is imperative in order to be able to refer properly to any moder banknote.
The book can be bought from many sources, starting with its Publisher (Krause), however, my advice is to get it from Amazon.com, since its discunts are unbeatable.
WPM, Modern Issues, 1961-Date, 11th Ed........2005-07-30
As always, the work and research to get the latest information available to the collector is presented to us in the catalog as best as possible. I would like to see a section that list countries whose names have changed. While the catalog is a tremedous effort to 'keep current' with the many changes going on while it is in the making, I long for the day when the CD comes out and changes are added electronically. Stamp collectors now have this and a virtual stamp collection. Thanks to all that work to get the latest information for a great hobby!
World Paper Money 11th ed. Modern Issues.......2005-07-26
Most useful - but - there seem to be several errors in this catalogue. One of the most glaring is the complete omission of SOMALIA, despite the index refering the reader to page 772. These are, in fact, the entries for SOMALILAND from 1994. All entries for SOMALIA from 1962 to 1990 have disappeared.
Sorry Mr. Pick, now it's Krause!.......2005-07-24
I would say, - there is no other, better book, so we have to use this one. I have looked through some pages of it and I already found quite a few blunders. First of all there are quite a few misleading price valuations, I would even say many price manipulations. I haven't gone through every single page of it yet, but a quick look at the book reveals the following:
- Overall image quality got worse (much worse) in this year 2005 edition. Some photos have some white spots and cuts.
- Signature tables have disappeared in quite a few country listings. Instead of signature tables Krause website is advertised all across the pages. Question: why remove what already has been added over years?
- Most of the country letter code explanations and country names are gone from West African States listings.
- Signatures are numbered but not always displayed in signature tables.
- Catalogue numbers are changed and moved around to frequently confusing the collectors and especially addong tons of extra work for dealers.
- Many banknotes are valued way below market value. Some are valued below anytime exchange rate. Example: Latvian 100 Latu exchange rate always was over $160 but Krause values it in Uncirculated condition at $150.
- No ERRATA is being printed. Any self-respecting publisher prints errata pages and puts them in a book, or even sends Errata (corrections) pages to all their customers and book owners. The book was published carelessly. Some colourful images (not so important to a professional) were added, but what's most important is the text info and price valuations. This book is important to a beginner and as well to a professional. We still have to use it, cause there is no other catalogue for All World's Paper Money, but making so many errors and blunders shows that the publisher of this book does not care much about what the reader gets from it.
Good-bye Pick... hello Krause.

Excellent Book.......2004-06-28
Although I am a relative novice at bookbinding, I found this book both easy to use and extremely thorough. With a familiarity of only the basics of bookbinding and only a few bindings under my belt I was able to follow the instructions in this book to produce some lovely and remarkable books. This book is unique in that it answers the problem of how to get single page bindings to lie flat, a problem that vexed me until I happened upon SSSS.
Book Description
The lifesytle lead by many of today's urbanites points to the conviction that less is more. With living space at a premium the sole opeiton for many is to make the most of what they have.
Fortunately, this has been proven to be the modivation of some of the most innovative solutions that transform small spaces into practical and stylish contempary pads.
Color can enhance the feeling of space. High ceilings can transform into additional levels. Sliding doors and portable closets replace permanent walls, and furniture on wheels offers versatility and comfort. These are only several examples of the design solutions available to apartments, studios, lofts, and small houses that are all limited by one thing: the lack of surface area.
Featureing inspirational projects by some of the world's best known architects and interior designers, Small Urban Interiors provides a fresh look at how to make the most of small living spaces in urban environments.

It has to grow on you.......2007-05-09
Although the organization of this book takes some getting used to (as you can gather from some of the reviews), it actually has many wonderful ideas for organizing and designing your small space. The book focuses on making structural changes to your small home, like installing built-ins or moving walls, and so is better for home owners. I do enjoy much of the book though even if only for future reference.
A beautiful idea book.......2006-11-15
After reading all the one-star negativity here, I must defend this beautiful and useful book. It is filled with a variety of design ideas that helped me get inspired in redesigning my house. You may not find exactly what you need to accomplish in your space but turning the pages of this beautifully designed book might give you goose bumps (as happened to me) from the sheer excitement that you yourself will create something new. It is not a how-to book. It is a fun, aesthetically pleasing reference that you will return to repeatedly to find a creative inspiration or simply relax with.
clearly underrated.......2004-05-10
listen, this book clearly and susinctly establishes a degree a minimalism and clarity in design that most books disregard in order to be "hip" and "modern". ths book relishes in providing ideas that approach the limits of functional simplicity but avoid breaching the realm of practicality. occasionally, the book moves away from the minimalism to appreciate the creativity of working with those materials that are readily available, however, te focal point is the efficient usage of spaces to create modern designs that give proper recognition to the masters who initiated these designs.
get it and love it.
elegant idea book.......2003-10-18
perhaps the book is mistitled. i can't believe anyone would actually buy this book thinking it had home depot how-to "solutions," as some reviewers claim. what it is, is a beautiful, elegant, modern *idea* book. i saw it in the bookstore of a modern art museum and wrote down the title to come home and buy it online. it is a visual documentary of possibilities, powerful in its simplicity and convincing in its aesthetic. as a graphic designer, an architecture student, and a dabbler in interior design, i can say it's one of my favorites.
nothing to see here.......2003-10-11
I disagree with reviewers who said the book did not have enough words. My complaint is that the pictures don't say anything new. This book is a waste of money.

How we raise our children differs greatly from society to society, with many cultures responding differently to such questions as how a parent should respond to a crying child, how often a baby should be nursed, and at what age a child should learn to sleep alone. Ethnopediatrics--the study of parents, children, and child rearing across cultures--is the subject of anthropologist Meredith F. Small's thorough and fascinating book Our Babies, Ourselves.
Small asserts that our ideas about how to raise our kids are as much a result of our culture as our biology, and that, in fact, many of the values we place on child-rearing practices are based in culture rather than biology. Small writes, "Every act by parents, every goal that molds that act, has a foundation in what is appropriate for that particular culture. In this sense, no parenting style is 'right' and no style is 'wrong.' It is appropriate or inappropriate only according to the culture." Our Babies, Ourselves is a wonderful read for anyone interested in the social sciences, and will be especially meaningful to those swept up in the wild adventure of parenting. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
New parents are faced with innumerable decisions to make regarding the best way to care for their baby, and, naturally, they often turn for guidance to friends and family members who have already raised children. But as scientists are discovering, much of the trusted advice that has been passed down through generations needs to be carefully reexamined.
A thought-provoking combination of practical parenting information and scientific analysis,
Our Babies, Ourselves is the first book to explore why we raise our children the way we do--and to suggest that we reconsider our culture's traditional views on parenting.
In this ground-breaking book, anthropologist Meredith Small reveals her remarkable findings in the new science of ethnopediatrics. Professor Small joins pediatricians, child-development researchers, and anthropologists across the country who are studying to what extent the way we parent our infants is based on biological needs and to what extent it is based on culture--and how sometimes what is culturally dictated may not be what's best for babies.
Should an infant be encouraged to sleep alone? Is breast-feeding better than bottle-feeding, or is that just a myth of the nineties? How much time should pass before a mother picks up her crying infant? And how important is it really to a baby's development to talk and sing to him or her?
These are but a few of the important questions Small addresses, and the answers not only are surprising but may even change the way we raise our children.

a gift for my daughter.......2007-09-17
this was another gift for my daughter she enjoys readin she liked this one also
Interesting look at cross cultural care of infants.......2007-07-01
This book gave an anthropological, evolutionary, perspective on infant care. I thought the most valuable insight this book gave was identifying the Western culture's focus on independence and how common parenting practices subconciously and consciously focus on independence. It gave me some perspective on why I was doing what I was doing.
You can tell she is a proponent of cosleeping, babywearing, and breastfeeding. So she emphasizes the positive health advantages of doing these things and how doing these things are more in line with meeting the biological/evolutionary needs of a baby, but she does continue that not doing these things, or doing these things on various continuums, do become cultural norms in order for parents to get the things done that they need to do. And that other cultures, (besides Western culture) do wean their babies, or allow other people to carry their babies, or have the baby sleep in their own bed, but in the same room. She notes that the Western culture is extreme in not doing these things, which is fine, but because it goes against a babies evolutionary/biological needs the trade off is generally a baby who cries more.
I liked the fact that this wasn't a how to book. I liked it because it described how some primitive cultures care for their baby, and I liked the fact that primitive cultures had behaviors that I felt weren't perfect. I liked it because it allows you to think about various parenting choices and analyze the motivations of your choices and whether or not you are willing to accept the possible consequences.
Pseudo-science in support of Attachment Parenting.......2007-05-02
I've been struggling for over a month to finish this book to give it a fair review, but I have finally thrown in the towel. I haven't been this angry reading a book since Camile Paglia, and I
like Paglia. Small has twisted science to her own ends and interpretations in full support of the Attachment Parenting style advocated by Dr. William Sears and the La Leche League with no respect for the rigor or detail of the science she claims to promote.
Our Babies, Ourselves, besides being a cheap title rip-off of the famous women's health book,
Our Bodies, Ourselves, claims to be a layman's introduction to the science of ethnopediatrics, a cross-disciplinary study of child rearing practices around the world by cultural anthropology, child development, and pediatrics. Several famous ethnographies and development studies are citied and as a former student of cultural anthropology and a new parent I was already familiar with many of them.
But Small's bias against all things western is hinted at from the very beginning; every time she discusses western baby handling, she mentions that babies are put in "hard plastic seats." The word "hard" is, without a doubt, a value judgement, not a description, and does not follow the carefully objective tone of the ethnographic studies. The careful reader can begin to see where facts end and Small's opinions come to the fore by paying attention to the footnotes: where the text is supported by science there are copious footnotes and where opinion dominates the footnotes suddenly dry up.
Small's opinions can be summed up here: "...parents are opting for a more independent relationship from their babies. They choose to place babies in cribs ad car seats rather than carry them all the time, to feed babies in intervals rather than continuously, and to respond less quickly to infant distress. Although this style provides parents with some freedom from demands of the infant, it also comes with a cost-a crying baby who is not biologically adapted to the cultural change." There is no supporting footnote to this statement.
The entire philosophy of Attachment Parenting is very attractive to western parents who feel disassociated from their children or who have completely bought into the cult of childhood that idealizes all aspects of the child's development. But to my mind it comes with two very high price tags. The first is a complete detachment from the culture in which we live. It is not practical to expect someone to grow up in western culture not able to sleep on their own in their own bed. The second price is a lack of respect for both our babies and ourselves, not allowing a child joy of discovering the world for themselves or giving parents the room required in our culture to be separate from their children.
Small does not attempt to look for solutions that will fit in to our culture, choices that can be more beneficial for babies but will help them to grow into a western, industrialized world. She idealizes and glorifies the non-industrial child rearing and believe that we should adopt it wholesale.
Since I am familiar with the ethnographies presented, I know that only the !Kung San of the groups presented actually have sexual equality and that they culturally reinforce early independence in their children in a socially supported environment. I know that the Guisii are extremely misogynistic with a heavy level of both mental and physical abuses and their women and girls have a low sense of self worth. Small does not show these more complex parts of the cultures, only the infant carrying and nursing that she wants to emphasize. And she completely downplays the weaning by coating nipples in bitter herbs, as if there is no disrespect in suddenly taking away something that was constantly given as a source of comfort when their mothers were too busy to tend them. Small does not emphasize that aborigine mothers never look their babies in the eye while nursing which would give the babies too high a sense of self worth.
I am now very interested in the research of ethnopediatrics and curious to see more scientific writing on the subject, to study it in an objective manner.
Our Babies, Ourselves, unfortunately, is neither good science nor good parenting, a flimsy pseudo-scientific shell in support of the fashion for Attachment Parenting.
Read this before your baby is born.......2007-03-07
This book is excellent. It actually gives evidence and cites facts about babies. This is not a how to book, but shows you that as a parent you can choose between many parenting styles. As soon as my wife and I read that in Japan (where babies co-sleep) the SIDS rate is much lower than in the US (where on average babies sleep alone at three months) we knew we would let our daughter sleep with us in the bed. This books gives good insight in why we do things the way we do with raising babies. And then you realize that a lot of the things we do go straight against what babies need. I recommend this book highly and look forward to reading more by this author.
Factual support for trusting your parenting instincts.......2006-09-01
I was enthralled by the information about this book, and quickly went on to read its successor, Kids. I thrive on historical and scientific fact, and this book left me with a deeper understanding of child-rearing practices from the author-anthropologist's view. As a breastfeeding mom and advocate of attachment parenting, I reference information from it a lot when people challenge issues such as nursing toddlers, feeding on cue and babywearing.

A Winning Memoir from Ireland's Radical Troubadour.......2006-11-18
Christy Moore has supported so many human rights causes in different countries that he makes Bob Dylan seem politically-timid, Joan Baez look lazy, and may have spent more time performing in prisons than Johnny Cash. Moore begins each of the 200+ chapters with the lyrics of a song in his repertoire, many of which he has written, and explains what the song means to him. With openness about his feelings and candor about his wild-man past, he achieves an intimacy and depth that eludes more traditionally-structured biographies. Every bit as good a singer as Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor and Bono, Moore could have cashed in a long time ago with more mainstream material, but instead has followed his passion for Irish "trad," folk and protest songs of many nations. "One Voice" includes many photos of Moore's family, friends and fellow musicians. An engaging self-portrait of an artist/activist, whose infectious love of folk music and the people who make it will keep readers turning pages long after they meant to go to sleep.

Jewish youth learn about their heroes from Brody's book --Jewish News of Metro West, N. J.
Customer Reviews:
American Jewish heroes .......2005-06-16
One- hundred and fifty Jewish heroes are chosen as having made significant contributions to American life. The author Brody who is of a military background himself devotes more than the usual space to Jewish military heroes and participants in all of America's wars. He does the commendable work of making known to a larger public many quiet heroes whose deeds have been far greater than their public names.
The book is excellent, but far, in my opinion, from perfect. It does not include enough of the cultural heroes , the scientists, writers, and other creators who have so enriched American life. It does not in my opinion always include the best examples from a particular area of endeavor.
Nonetheless it is a wonderful compilation which can only deepen the appreciation of the Jewish contribution to American life.
Should be in every Jewish library.......2005-01-20
I found this book during a Web search on astronaut Judith Resnik, who was the first Jew in space and the second woman in space. (Sadly, she perished in the Challenger explosion -- may she rest in peace.) Judith Resnik is included in this book, along with 149 other American Jews who, in many different ways, are real heroes that we can all look up to. The biographies are well-written and easy reading, suitable for classroom or home. A wonderful resource that should be in every Jewish library.
Great book for families, lirbaries..........2004-10-19
And one of the stories in the book, one of the 150 illustrated true stories of American heroism included in "Jewish Heroes & Heroines of America : 150 True Stories of American Jewish Heroism", which was published in 1996, is now the main focus of an entire book by Oregon newspaper columnist Bob Welch, who has written the story of Lieutenant Frances Slanger of the U.S. Army Nurses Corps during WWII. She was a nurse who died in Normandy while serving as an army nurse there. The book by Welch is titled "American Nightingale: The Story of Frances Slanger" and is also available via amzon.com
A PERFECT GIFT FOR HANUKAH.......2001-09-26
Last year when Mr. Brody was a guest speaker at a B'nai Brith meeting here in Century Village, Boca Raton, I purchased a copy of JEWISH HEROES & HEROINES OF AMERICA. After reading it from cover to cover, I realized that this book should be in every "JEWISH" home. I highly recommend it as the perfect gift for HANUKAH. Since I write a monthly column in our community newspaper I would like permission to review it.In my last column
I reviewed JUDAISM & VEGETARIANISM by PROF. RICHARD SCHWARTZ.
Also if possible I would appreciate 2 or 3 complimentary copies to pass around at our Living Room Learning Club, and at our next B'nai Brith meeting.THANK YOU.

Excellent blend of historical portraits of Jews in America........1999-03-17
Every generation of children needs heroes: people to look up to, admire, respect and emulate as one is growing up. At a time when intermarriage rates are rising and assimilation is a growing phenomenon, it is important to instill in our youth a strong sense of Jewish pride in the Jewish men and women who have overcome adversity to become legends in their own time. Seymour Brody has provided a wonderful biographical tool to teach Jewish and non-Jewish children about the important contributions American Jews have made in various ways in this wonderful update to his Jewish Heroes of America. Brody has made this edition more egalitarian by adding biographical profiles of an additional fifty women (including Jenny Maas Flexner).
Brody's brief (2 pages), but informative, biographical sketches highlight where the heroes have lived and worked, what awards they have won, what professions they have worked in and what accomplishments have brought them fame and the respect of both Jews and non-Jews in America. When known, he also mentions whether they are Ashkenazi or Sephardi and their religious affiliation. Brody's book covers the whole span of American history from the prerevolutionary years to the present. Examples of Jewish soldiers are given for every war that the U.S. has fought. Among the people that are represented are lawyers, rabbis, politicians, businessmen, entertainers, athletes and health care workers. Each entry is accompanied by an illustration by award-winner Art Seiden.
An improvement over the previous edition is the inclusion of a name index, although a subject index and bibliography / reading list are still lacking. At times, the entries read less like narratives and more like resumes. Sometimes, Brody is too vague, using phrases like "played an important role" instead of telling what the specific accomplishments were. It would have been better if Brody has chosen a greater number of stronger role models (he includes Jews who rarely acknowledged their faith and Jews who intermarried).
Overall, the book does an excellent job of paying tribute to Jews from most of the states who have left their mark on America. By including first-generation Americans, Brody also demonstrates that what has made America thrive for centuries is its willingness to accept people from every nation and from every culture, letting them live in a home of freedom where they can fulfill their every dream. This book is very highly reccommended for public, school, synagogue and general Judaica collections for both young adult and children's collections
