An influential force in the abolition movement and a lasting testimonial to the injustice of slavery, Brown's 1847 Narrative offers a sincere and moving account of his experiences during the first 20 years of his life as a slave in Missouri.
Customer Reviews:
A wise and intelligent book by a key Black Leader.......2005-11-15
Today when we think of pre-Civil War African American leaders, Frederick Douglass is remember solely, and perhaps some remember the heroism of Sojourner Truth. However, there were a number of other African American leaders who help lead the struggle for freedom and dignity. Actually, it is rather surprising that so many of them like Douglass and Martin Delany Jr. also wrote.
Brown certainly was one of the major African American political and intellectual leaders of the 19th Century. Not only was he an antislavery activist, but he was one of the first to write works of African American history and he was among the first African Americans to publish a novel, his Clotel, the President's Daughter.
Not only does this narrative provide the usual chilling view of slavery, and what we can celebrate is the usual ability of Black men and women and their supporters to rise above, out wit and out struggle the slave masters, but also some clear political foresight.
Brown's narrative was entered into a discourse that was opened by the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin about what force would bring an end to slavery. Stowe had put forward the idea of becoming born again in Christ through the evangilical experience inspired by the heroism of slaves, leading to a religious revival that would recognize slavery as the number one sin in the World. Delany proposed a Pan-African cultural revolution to set up a free Black nation that would lead an international slave revolt. Brown's prediction of the solution, and his recognition of the nature of the conflict, not simply between slavery and abolitionism, but between slavery and industrial capitalism, the actual lines of the civil war, was brilliant, prescient, and right.
I enjoyed reading this years ago and wish I hadn't read it yet, so I could have the joy of discovering it again!

Book Description
The Catskills is the favored new retreat for New Yorkers. Only ninety minutes from the city, it's closer than the Hamptons and much more affordable. As a consequence, this once thriving area is having a huge revival as a weekend-vacation place. Catskills Country Style, the first book of its kind on the Catskills and its new style--what might be called urban-country-folk design--showcases this new style in the cottages and cabins of the region. Intriguing historic houses are included as well as a collection of more contemporary homes. Among these is Olana, the 1860s Moorish-style country estate of Frederic Church, the great American landscape artist and leading figure of the Hudson River School of painting. Also included is Pennyroyal Cottage, the 1880s first American woman to have her own design firm. These historic houses are the forerunners of the retreats of many current New York City-based artists, bohemians, designers, and stylists.
Current owners of Catskills country style houses are instrumental in shaping trends of today's look. These stylish innovators are creating an aesthetic with a new twist, recycling ideas as well as furniture with an individualistic philosophy that features an eclectic mix of flea market, yard sale, antique and handmade furniture, sometimes peppered with the latest international high-design avant-garde furnishings. This is a book in the tradition of Rizzoli's Charleston Style and Santa Barbara Style, and give us a glimpse into the homes and lifestyles of an influential and fascinating group of people.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Collection of Homes in the Catskills.......2006-09-04
I expected a book showing houses with country style decorating. Instead, it is a pleasing selection of old and modern homes in the Catskills country. It includes historic sites like John Burroughs' cabin and Wilderstein (Suckley family home). Besides these museum homes, you see an Arts & Crafts style bungalow from 1901, an artist's home with "funky ambience," and an 1800s church converted to a home. It also shows a 1920s farm cottage, a garden writers vacation cabin, and a former dairy farm.
Ron Smith's modern home and Olana, a fantastical Moorish-style mansion, followed by a baroquely decorated bungalow give the book an eclectic assortment.
The full-page color photos and interesting captions make this an enjoyable read for anyone interested in homes and decorating.
Another photog feast of architectural gems from this pair!.......2003-01-09
Steve Gross and Sue Daley have been dazzling the oft-oversaturated "coffee table" book market since their unusual and eclectic book OLD HOUSES was published more than a decade ago.
Unlike many photographic books of this genre--or photographers for that matter--Gross + Daley look for the unusual, the misplaced, the forgotten, even the sublime. Their photographic style, while crisp, is voyeuristic without being intrusive. Rarely styling their photographs, they allow the interiors or exteriors to speak in their own evocative voices.
As with their previous books, CATSKILLS COUNTRY STYLE is infused with a variety of architectural styles and unusual homes, even little-known museums and undeliberate vintage set-pieces. And, as in their other books, the houses they select are styled by their talented, often capricious, owners or the benign patterning of neglect and wear and age. This photographic team always embrace the off-beat or the discarded, forgotten time-encapsulated gems which fall away from "back road" America.
If you do not live in the Catskills or have no intention of going there, it doesn't matter. If you like unusual houses and their interiors or have always desired a place in the country, this book will delight, inspire and captivate.
With an apt, well-written introduction by Francine Prose and excellent captions--instead of text-heavy chapters--which keep the focus on the photography.
A visual feast! Check out OLD HOUSES, too, as well as Gross + Daley's other recently published book, SANTA FE COUNTRY STYLE, and AT HOME WITH PAST. All books have a similar aesthetic and approach and you will not be disappointed.
You can smell the freah air........2002-10-08
This book through the use of superb photograhy and simple but informative captions conveys the love the owners have for these homes in the country. From the ornate victorian to the simple country style cottage of a beekeeper this book is a pleasure to own and display.

Book Description
Jerry Vales wondrous story of his beginnings in the Bronx to his legendary Carnegie Hall concerts.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful, Talented Man, and Funny too!.......2002-04-04
I loved this book so much. Jerry Vale is truly one of the most gifted singers I have ever heard. What he sings come straight from the heart as did this beautifully written book. What is wonderful about Mr. Vale is his sincerity and honesty. I loved this book and would recommend it not only to his fans but to anyone who wants to read a book about a nice man, a nice family and a wonderful career.
Jerry Vale-A Singer's Life was a great experience........2001-02-05
The story is true. Jerry contributed to it and approved every word. Dozens of interviews were conducted. The author traveled with Jerry on the road and toured with him at book signings. At concerts fans bought while Jerry signed books. They love him. His story is a wondrous adventure into the backstage area of show business and stars Sinatra, DiMaggio, Mantle, Durante, Goulet, Dean Martin, Jayne Mansfield and others. From life in the teeming streets of the 1940s Bronx until the great triumph for him at Carnegie Hal; and the inbetween rejections, panic, the big break and the heartbreak, it's all there illuminating and insightful without complaint or regret,a charming and refreshing glimpse of a sturdy and passionate, music-loving vital hitmaker, who, by the way, is still working at his craft. I may have written it, but, I still love it and it's subject, one of the best singers ever - Jerry Vale. Sorry, but I had to tell you all what great fun it was writing the book with Jerry Vale, his wife Rita and all the great characters who make up the book.

Book Description
Sol Rosenberg was born in 1926 in Poland. During the depression years of the 1930's, his father, a baker, was barely able to provide for his family. Nevertheless, when Sol was younger, he and his two sisters had a secure if austere lifestyle. However, in 1939, their lives were shattered by the German invasion of Poland. Confined to the Warsaw Ghetto, Sol resorted to smuggling to keep the family alive. When he was sixteen, Sol's life was changed forever when his parents and sisters were gassed in the Treblinka extermination camp.
Eventually, Sol, too, was captured and transported to Treblinka. However he managed to escape and return to the Warsaw Ghetto where he joined up with the resistance. At first, the partisans, hope was to halt further German deportations. When the Germans attacked the Ghetto, Sol participated in the uprising. One of the few survivors, Sol was again taken prisoner.
During the course of his two and a half year imprisonment, Sol was shifted to three extermination camps and two slave labor camps. In the final days of the war, he miraculously survived the Dachau Death March.
Upon liberation, Sol was more dead than alive. However, he gradually regained his strength. On one occasion, Sol accompanied a friend who was visiting his fiancée in a Displaced Persons, Camp. There Sol met Tola, another survivor and the beautiful blond of his dreams. After their marriage, they applied for emigration to the United States. Finally, following what seemed an interminable wait, they arrived in New Orleans in 1949.
Today, Sol and Tola are the proud parents of five children and grandparents of twelve. Sol has been active in numerous civic and social endeavors. He is a major contributor to the University of Louisiana at Monroe's Athletic Booster Club. He has served as a three-time president of the local Temple. He is also a charter member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and in this capacity he is in demand as a speaker.
Customer Reviews:
It grabs your heart and soul !.......2007-06-02
This has got to be one of the best book's I have ever read. It explaines so much about why he is the loving caring man that he is and why so many people care about him. I couldn't put it down!
Inspiring man!.......2004-07-23
To be completely honest, I haven't read the book. But I live in Monroe and I've heard Sol speak out before and that was incredibly moving. I'm waiting to get my copy.
I was in the eighth grade at my junior high (I'm a senior in high school now) when he visited and spoke about his experiences. He really is inspiring. I drive past his piping store nearly every day...
And amazing man and I'm certain that the book is amazing as well.
A Rare and Valuable Window on Modern History.......2004-05-23
There are few and diminishing number of holocaust survivors who can offer first hand accounts on this horrific period in history. Sol's story covers a six year period that includes surviving the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, Treblinka, Majdenik, Buchenwald and Dachau.
Sol Survived from physical strength and stamina (at 77 today he is still in remarkable health), personal pride in being a Jew, incredible resourcefullness, and an indellible will to live. He just refused to die.
This story will appeal to any student of Jewish or Holocaust studies, but it holds real value for anyone who wants to understand the strength of faith and spirit, regardless of religious background.
A Remarkable Story.......2003-02-16
This book is a relatively short book and easy to read in terms of the prose. It is very difficult to read in terms of trying to comprehend the cruelty and misery of that place and time. The author, Richard Chardkoff, is a history professor at the university in Louisiana where the subject, Sol Rosenberg, now lives with his children and grandchildren. Dr. Chardkoff was funded with a grant to travel to Poland and Germany to document the events and Sol's movements during this time.
Salik Rosenberg was born a Jew in Germany in the late 1920's and moved with his family to Poland before the Nazi invasion. The story evolves around Sol's life during the rise of the Nazi's through to his rescue by the American troops at Dachau. What you see in this horrific odyssey are the captors and guards who embody the worst evils of humans, contrasted with a person like Sol, who seldom questioned his ability to go on and had just an incredible will for survival. Dr. Chardkoff adeptly adds historical facts surrounding the locations and timeframes of Sol's journey.
This book can be read by anyone easily and is definitely recommended for students of the holocaust. Due to the graphic nature of the conditions of the prisoners, I would not recommend this book to children. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they had a difficult childhood.
Fantastic Books.......2002-10-10
This book brought the Holocaust to life in great detail. It truly was educational and gives you a great deal of admiration for Sol Rosenberg. We have prisons filled with people who say they had a bad childhood so that justifies their crimes. They should make this book available to people in prison and then tell them to stop their whining. Dr. Chardkoff did an excellent job!
